Work-around to "unknown device" problem

I found a work-around to the "unknown device" problem, a pain to do, but much less painful than any alternatives I've found so far.
In my case, I can connect my Ipod one time. After I eject it, if I reconnect, I get the Unknown Device error. That's where this work-around comes in.
There is an INF file (a Windows hardware configuration file) in the Windows\INF directory that has a name that will be specific to your computer. Once you determine that file, you need to re-install it. Re-installing it allows the Ipod to be recognized the next time it is connected. These are the steps:
1) Determine the file name on your computer. You only need to do this one time, and then remember the name. Using Regedit, navigate to HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-44455354 0000}. Then do an Edit / Find for "ipod" without the quotes, making sure that "Data" is checked and "Match whole string only" is not checked. It should find "Apple iPod USB Driver" in the "DriverDesc" value in one of the sub-keys. There will be another value called "InfPath". The data for that is the file name for the INF file on your computer. On my computer it is oem51.inf. It will be something like that on yours.
2) In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Windows\Inf and find that file. In addition to "oem??.inf", there will be an "oem??.pnf" (same numbers), which is a binary version of the .inf file. Delete that file, or rename it if you prefer. If it exists, step 3 will not work.
3) Right click on the .inf file and select Install. The computer will chug for a few seconds. The .pnf file should reappear and, more importantly, your iPod should now be able to connect one time. At least it does for me.
I hope that Apple puts out a fix for this problem sometime soon. Meanwhile, doing steps 2 and 3 every time I want to connect is annoying, but bearable.

I would like to apologize for posting this message. I promise that it did work and did seem to be the solution at the time I posted it, but it helps me no longer. My Ipod was recognized several consecutive times after I posted this with no work-around, but then it became an unknown device again, and there it stays, seemingly forever.
I am a highly skilled and experienced Windows system programmer, and this has me stumped. I apologize for any time that my message may have wasted for others. I have also tried every other solution that has been posted here and elsewhere, and none work.
I would recommend that Apple pay me a lot of money to find and fix this problem. Short of that, they should pay someone else to fix it. To have this many fatal problems for so many people should be considered unacceptable. Until a fix is available, I shall just be happy that I got as much onto my Ipod as I did before it became unavailable.

The problem is not so much with Premiere Elements as it is with challenges faces in the operating system registry. Basically, DVD burner programs, like Nero, which are installed on your computer at the factory, refuse to share access to the DVD burner with other programs.

  • 10.4.9 Printing Work-Around Fix - 10 Steps

VonB has already listed a fix in this thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4234084&#4234084
Unfortunately the links he provided there are for a paid site, and if you don't have a membership you're outta luck. I've taken his info, used it and written what I think are clear instructions to help you be able to print in 10.4.9 until Apple releases an update patch. Special thanks to Vonb for pointing me in the right direction.
    Hope this helps...
    Jim
    10.4.9 Printing Work-Around Fix - 10 Steps
Problem - Many programs will not print in OSX 10.4.9.
What This Fix Does - Allows you to print in TEXT EDIT. You can then save MS Word files as Text Edit files and print them. Hopefully a fix will soon be released by Apple for OS 10.4.9 or MS for office 2004.
What This Fix Does Not Do - It won't allow you to print in MS Word if you currently can't, and it won't allow Appleworks to work if it currently doesn't.
Difficulty - easy to moderate. Can you paint by numbers or do you tend to draw outside the lines? If you follow the directions closely you'll be ok.
Disclaimer - I typed this fix out for myself and have applied it to my 5 personal macs and 4 at work. It hasn't crashed any of them, but I don't want you to get ****** off at me if it does... so if you screw your mac up by doing this don't say I didn't warn you. This fix isn't for newbies.
Time to complete - about 1/2 an hour.
    Special Instructions -
    A. You'll need to be logged in as the administrator of the computer you're working on. I've written this help missive in real plain language. If it seems like I'm speaking down to you I'm not, I'm just trying to make sure you don't screw it up and send me nasty emails.
    B. Check to see if TEXT EDIT already prints for you, if it does then skip to #10. (TEXT EDIT can be found in your APPLICATIONS FOLDER on your Macintosh HD.)
OK... here we go, THE TEN STEPS! (cue dramatic music)
    1. Delete all of your printers in the PRINT & FAX set up in SYETEM PREFERENCES by following this path - BLUE APPLE / SYSTEM PREFERENCES / PRINT & FAX. If the plus and minus button on the bottom left of the dialog window that appears is grey'd out, you need to CLICK ON THE LOCK and UNLOCK it. You'll need the administrator password to do this. Once the lock is unlocked, click on each printer listed there and then click the minus button. Repeat the process until all printers in the print & fax dialog are deleted.
    2. Download two programs from the net. (REMEMBER where you download these files on your computer.)
    A. Download a program called CUPS from this site. http://www.cups.org/software.php?VERSION=1.3svn-r6326&FILE=cups/1.2.8/cups-1.2.8 .dmg
CUPS is a unix program that Apple uses within Mac OSX to print. Download version 1.2.8 only. When you get to the site, you will have FTP and HTTP buttons to select where to download from. If you're already in a browser, click on one of the HTTP sites. That way you don't have to open an ftp program.
    B. Download and install a program called PRINTER SETUP REPAIR (VERSION 5.0.5) from this site. http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/index.html
PRINTER SETUP REPAIR is a shareware program we'll use to fix some issues... if this works I suggest you go back to this site and be a good net citizen and purchase the software. If it doesn't then don't buy it.
    3. Install CUPS by clicking on the CUPS.DMG file twice. This will open the DMG file on the desktop as a hard disk image. Open the CUPS HD image and click on the CUPS.pkg twice to install the program. Follow the instructions to the end. After installation click close button.
    4. Open psr505te.dmg by clicking on it twice. (it might be called psr505TE.dmg.zip. if it is, click on the psr505TE.dmg.zip file twice to open it, then click on the psr505TE.dmg file twice to open it.) Once the psr505TE.dmg is open, open the PRINTER SETUP REPAIR HD on your desktop. Inside is a program by the same name. Open it by clicking on it twice.
    5. Click the "TRY IT" button, type in your admin password, and click the CONTINUE button
    6. On the left side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, click CUPS TOOLS icon. in the middle of the dialogue box, if the screen reads " cupsd is running" click the STOP button located just to the left.
    7. On the lower right hand side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, under the words "replace current cupsd.conf file with", SELECT "new cupsd.conf file". Then click GO. Then click CONTINUE in the next dialog box that appears.
    8. On the left side of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window, click on the FILE PERMISSIONS ICON. Make sure that all of the boxes in the middle of the Printer Setup Repair dialogue window are checked except for OMIT LOCALIZED FILES and both of the FOR ALL USERS boxes. At the top of the screen in the middle click on the PRINTER ICON THAT HAS A QUESTION MARK on it. In the window that pops up click CONTINUE. This will run VERIFY AND REPAIR PERMISSIONS from inside the Printer's Setup Repair Program. (I know, there is a repair permissions in the Disk Utility Program already on the mac, it doesn't do something that this program does. I don't know what it does, but this works and Disk Utility doesn't.)
    9. Run it AGAIN! (the second time does the trick for some reason. just once didn't do it on three out of 5 macs that I used this work around on). This should allow you to print in TEXT EDIT.
    10. If you are using Microsoft Word and you want to print something, you need to SAVE AS a text only file (File menu / Save As / Format - Text Only) and print by opening the document in TEXT EDIT and printing from that application. So far this fix has worked on 1 intel iMac, 1 lamp stand iMac, an eMac, a Macbook and an iBook. (Funny enough, my G4 sawtooth Mac running 10.4.9 works fine and prints from MS word without a hitch.)
If this fix works for you, i encourage you to go back to printer's setup repair's website (http://www.fixamacsoftware.com/software/index.html) and purchase their software.

Use the install disk that shipped with your Mac to "Repair Disk"
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.

  • What is my 'Unknown device' in Device Manager? - ThinkPad T40 2374-75U

One more yellow ? to go.  Thanks to the good advice rampant on this forum, I was able to figure out how to install the other drivers I needed.
This last one is messing with my mind tho.  It's unfair for a problem to not even have a name, doncha think?
About all I can fathom about this 'Unknown device' is its location:  'on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller'.
I tried the driver for 'Embedded Controller' and when I double click, it takes over the computer and tells me not to shut it down and begins installing 49 fixes.  When I did it, the program got to the 21st fix, and that was as far as it would go.  I shut down the computer after about 20 minutes.  It did not remove the 'Unknown device' remark in Device Manager.
What's a poor boy to do?
Also, Windows is taking forever to load. This was not the case yesterday.  Thanks for all your help.

hello, i have an iphone 5 it just fell into water and was in there for around 20seconds. I've seen on many of websites saying to keep it in a rice bag for 48 hours nd said it may work so i've done the same. I took out my phone from dat rice bag yesterday which worked perfectly alright for 6 hours and then switched off automatically! when i connected it to itunes it detected as a recovery device which after recovery during activation it shows as an unknown device! been working on it soo long! i live in mauritius here i have no official apple store but my phone is still under warranty. Please help me!!

When your phone was exposed to water, your warranty/support was voided, so you no longer have any warranty. An out of warranty exchange, from Apple, is US $269. Call AppleCare or whoever handles support where you live.

  • Unknown Device ipod Classic and Windows Vista problem??

Help!! My ipod Classic is not being recognized by my computer. I have read the previous articles and tried the solutions but I continue to get the result "Windows has determined that the driver software is up to date" I continue to get the error noise when I plug the USB in and the Device manager continues to say "Unknown Device" It seems others are having this problem, how do I fix this?

I am having the same trouble with mine, and I can say that it isn't iTunes, I plugged my brothers iPod Nano in and it worked like a charm, but when I plugged my iPod Classic 160g in all it says is it is an "unknown divice". It isn't Vista either as the same thing happens on XP Pro as well, so all I can think of is it is a error on the Classic itself. I just wish someone can help out so that I can use my ipod!!!! Come on Apple!!!! Solve this problem!!!!

  • Unknown device - ipod nano fine - problem with windows xp and usb root hub

Greetings all. I've seen this question come up over and over again and have been working on it following previous posts and posts on microsoft and hp sites for a couple of days now.
First off - the ipod nano is fine. Works on my son's computer well.
When I plug it into my 6 months new HP Pavilion laptop it says: 'found new hardware' and goes through the process of installing it, says it's been installed, but then shows 'unknown device'. In Device Manager it tells me there are no drivers installed, but when I try to follow the other instructions on this forum to update the drive to USB mass storage device (usbstor.inf), it tells me the best driver is installed and won't do it.
Many seem to have this problem with devices other than the iPod on Windows service pack 2 so I went to the Microsoft forums and they seem just as puzzled. I've updated all my Windows & HP software to the latest possible versions. The problem is definitely in the USB. Once, when I uninstalled the USB device and then rebooted the computer with my iPod still plugged into the port, it found my iPod, correctly identified it, and for a blissful moment I thought everything was fine! Then it reinstalled the USB drivers and made a comment to the effect that I should move the iPod to a USB 2.0 port for more effective operation and the iPod disappeared again.
I have 3 USB ports on my laptop, all are USB 2.0 and all 3 have the same problem.
I've tried all the stuff people have already said on here...does anyone have any NEW ideas? I'm hesitant to take it in for service because it seems to be a software problem that should be fixable.
Thanks in advance for your help and sorry about the long post.

This isn't a solution, but it's something I just tried and it may provide someone additional clues about's going on. I too think this is some sort of USB problem.
I have 6 USB ports. Two of them are USB 2.0. Since I applied the 03-23 update my computer hasn't recognized my nano at all. I would connect my nano and I couldn't get it to show up in My Computer, in iTunes, or on the far right side of the Start taskbar.
I just tried plugging my nano into the first USB port of my USB 2.0 pair and left the second 2.0 port empty. I then rebooted with the nano attached. Viola - I get a "Found New Hardware Apple iPod USB Device" message. My nano is now flashing "Do Not Disconnect." A small removeable storage icon with green arrow now shows on the far right side of the Start taskbar. If I click on it (like you're going to eject it) the note displayed says "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive (F:)".
If I go into My Computer, "Removeable Disk (F:)" now shows there. However, if I try to follow Trevor's instructions in another post to "go into My Computer with iPod connected, right click it, wait till the right click menu comes up (could take a few minutes); click Format, . . ." I'm stuck. I do the right click, watch the hour glass and wait for the Format menu to come up but it never does. Eventually the hour glass just goes away. No message, no Format menu. The waiting hour glass just goes away.
My computer isn't as new as yours, but like you I am completely current on maintenance.
I'm going to keep trying . . . If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

  • Printing Problem Solved (Temporary Work-around)

I've posted before, and others have posted here and elsewhere, about problems printing with Aperture since upgrading to Leopard. In my case, it's been with an Epson R1800.
Well, believe it or not, with the help of Epson support on the phone, I've figured this out. First of all, there is definitely a problem with Aperture's (or Leopard's) color management. What used to work (setting a color profile in the Aperture print dialog, and selecting "no color management" in the printer dialog) definitely does not work correctly at this point.
If you want color management, what you have to do is select "System Managed" in the Aperture print dialog, and select (for Epson) "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog. What this does is select the standard Epson profile for the paper you have selected. For example, if you've chosen Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper, the printer driver will use the "SPR1800 Premium Glossy" profile (Epson's standard profile for that paper, assuming you've downloaded it). Of course, that gives you Epson's version of what you want to print. If you have created your own profiles, using a spectrophotometer for example, you need to get the printer driver to apply YOUR profile instead of Epson's.
Here's how to apply your profile: Open Colorsync (in the Utilities folder), and select "Printers" in the Devices menu. Under the printer model, Stylus Photo R1800, in my case, select the profile for the paper you're interested in, say "SPR1800 Premium Glossy", and look on the right side of the window at "Current Profile:". Click the down arrow, and select "Other". Navigate to the profile you've created, and click "Open". This will set the profile you've created as what the printer driver will use when it thinks it's applying the SPR1800 Premium Glossy profile. Set other paper profiles (e.g., "SPR1800 Enhanced Matte") to whatever profile you've created for those papers.
Now, when you select "System Managed" in the Aperture dialog, and "Color Controls - Epson Standard" in the Epson dialog, it will apply your own profile.
Hopefully, Apple will fix the problem with color management, and we'll be able to go back to color management as it was before. In the meantime, this is the only work-around I've found.

I was/am totally a Mac guy, meaning my roots were System 7 based, and my knowledge of all things UNIX is being built slowly as needed in the OS X world. While I can make Photoshop & Aperture (and the GUI portions of OS X) stand on their heads and do backflips for treats I can't, with much conviction, speak on the roots of UNIX drivers. I think, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, that Gutenprint drivers are CUPS 'compatible' drivers, but not necessarily "CUPS" drivers in that they work with other printing platforms as well. Here are some sources of info:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.cups.org/
The Gutenprint drivers may be the CUPS drivers for the Epson printer, I don't know for sure. On the Canon site, there are two drivers available for download for the Pro9000. One labeled standard, the other labeled CUPS. By default, when adding the printer, my system uses the CUPS driver. I can actually have the Pro9000 added twice, once with the CUPS driver, once with the standard driver. I spoke with an Canon engineer the other day, and contrary to the advice you get from the standard phone support reps, he told me to definitely use the CUPS driver when printing RAW or 16-bit images from Photoshop or Aperture, as it's the only way to do 16-bit printing.

  • Satellite Pro L670-18F PSK3FE Webcam stops working become "Unknown Device"

The *webcam* on my *Satellite Pro L670-18F PSK3FE* which is running *Windows 7 64-Bit* worked fine until this week. My notifications bar started to say *"unknown USB device"* and when when I went to use the webcam it was no longer working.
When I turned the webcam off in the BIOS the notification stopped but when I turned it back on the notification kept coming up again. The unknown device is clearly the webcam.
I have updated my BIOS and tried system restore.
I have also downloaded the driver for the webcam from http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK and have been trying to run that - +but it NEVER seems to finish installing!+ I will keep trying to reload the driver and see if that helps but as of now I do not believe that the driver will help.
If this is only a driver problem could someone suggest how I get the driver to actually install :-(
I am now at a loss. I am unsure what to do now. Suggestions?... +please!+

    Hi
Unknown device means that the driver is not installed.
I think the webcam driver installation should fix this.
Since the face recognition use the webcam too, I recommend uninstalling this tool as well as the old version of webcam software.
Both (or just face recognition) should appear in control panel -> software
Now download the both applications from the driver page.
    Start with webcam driver installation:
    1) Unzip the webcam driver package
    2) The TC30049700N.exe can be unzipped too (right click -> extract here)
    3) Now you should see different files exe, dll, and others try to execute the setup.exe to start the installation. If this does not work, go to device manager, mark the unknown USB device (webcam) and install the driver pointing to the extracted folder containing the webcam driver files. The system should pick up the dll files automatically.
    4) Reboot the notebook and follow with face recognition software.
    Good luck

  • Iphone 4s is an "unknown device" and iphone 4 works just fine on my USB Hub.

Okay so for as long as I can remember I sync my iphone 4 using my belkin powered usb hub and all works just fine.  Now, since I have had my iphone 4S, my computer will not recognize the device when using my usb hub.  It works just fine when pluged directly into a usb on the computer itself.  Why does 4 work but 4s does not?  Any tips for me to try?  Says something like unknown device or not recognized in a little popup in my system tray when I connect it.  Thanks.
    Win 7 64-bit
    Erik

I found I was able to get around it too in a different way.  I found if you disable the usb hub device in device manager, plug in your iphone or ipad while it is disabled, then enable the usb hub in device manager it works fine.  So I actually ended up writing a little script with an icon on my desktop that I just double click when I connect the iphone and it quickly disables and reenables it for me. I am still not exactly happy with this solution either.

I tried to update my driver and it works fine now, I appreciate looking through this forum and finding answers for problems that I am having.

Do not get an iphone 5 if you want to use it with a Chrysler product.  The Chrysler Uconnect system might pair with your phone but the uconnect system will usually abend and become unusable after a few telephone conversations.  I have been to the dealer twice.  They have reset the uconnect system twice and I find it works for about 2 to 3 phone calls then it abends and uconnect becomes useless.  They had me call Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.  I was told that the iphone five is not compatable at this time with any chrysler uconnect phone through the dash system, even the new vehicles.  He had me get on this web site: www.uconnectphone.com as a place to monitor as when it would be compatable.  They told me that Samsung seems to be working harder to make it compatible than apple is and they had no idea when it would begin to work.  In effect Chrysler was telling me dump the iphone and get a Samsung if you want it to work in a Chrysler.  Also, the site would only give you information for Chrysler that were 2008 or newer, they gave the following number to call if your vehicle was older.    I called that number and they told me that Chrysler and Uconnect had no plans at all to make the iphone 5 work, in the future, on any Chrysler older than 2008.  So.......If you have a Chrysler or Dodge that is older than 2008 you will NEVER  be able to use an iphone5 on the uconnect through the dash system.   Do not buy an iphone if you have an older vehicle.  It will never be supported for the $1,000 you paid for this uconnect system on your car.  My car is a 2005 Town and Country.  I asked both Chrysler and uconnect if their was some sort of work around so I could use my phone.  They both told me their was not and that they had no plans to resolve this situation for my vehicle.  This means that I need to either get rid of my $42,000 vehicle with low milage or get rid of my Iphone 5.  Niether are really good options.
I was also givne the following places to send formal complaints, even though I was told that neither Chrysler, Dodge or Apple were going to do anything to correct my problem:
for email:   [email protected]   or Mail:  Chrysler customer Assistance  P.O. Box 218004, Auburn Hills, Michigan  48321
If anyone hears of a work around to be able to use an Iphone 5 in a Chrysler or Dodge product, please let me know.

This response is a little late as I just read about your problem. I have a 2012 Dodge Charger and a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country and both worked flawlessly with the iPhone 5s my wife and I had. However, we just upgraded to the iPhone 6 and Uconnect will receive calls but you cannot answer them. You can callout successfully, however. the annoyance being the inability to answer incoming calls in the HandsFree mode.
