Working with multiple frame rates

Hi- I unfortunately am dealing with a project where I'm dealing with potentially 3 different frame rates. I have some shot at 29.97ndf, some HDV captured using 1080i60 and some P2s converted for FCP and are at 23.98.
I understand that FCP 6 can handle different frame rates in the same timeline, so... are all these different rates something I need to be concerned with? I'll need to cut these together into a single montage and my end product will be a DVD.
Thanks for your help.
Robert

Thank you guys. Any specific ProRes? (there are so many of them). So... does this mean when I render it at 29.97 for NTSC all the 23.98 footage is going to get speed up like chipmunks?
Thanks again.

• How best to deal with multiple frame rates in storyline?

Hey all, my lack of attention to detail may have cost me hours. I have a movie I am working on and made the stupid assumption that all my clips are the same frame rate. Don't ask why I didn't check - just sheer stupidity.
So now I have numerous clips in the storyline all meticulously edited to sync with other clips, music, the whole nine. Some source clips are 24p while others are 60i. Do I really have to go back and convert each clip individually? I am looking to preserve quality as much as possible, and I know getting 60i to 24p will create some loss, but is there a nice and easy way to do the converting all at once after I complete the storyline?
Thanks in advance. Time to go do something else while I wait for answers...

on playback inside FCPX.
And on export.
you'll notice in the 'Retime Menu' the Option 'Conform Speed' - eg, when I add a 60p clip to my 25p Project, I get a wonderful smooth slomow, due to the 60fps get 'stretched' to 25fps.
if I don't Conform Speed, the 60p get playbacked - in a 25p pProject! - in real time => no slowmo
How 'good' FCPX does the marvel to down-cascade 60i into 24p ... try yourself.
no interlaced material in use here.
quality is in the eye of the beholder ...

• Cannot create slideshow with high frame rate

I have just bought QuickTime Pro version 7. I am using Windnows XP SP2 on a Pentium D machine.
I am trying to create a movie with still images I captured from my digital camera. I created a 10 seconds slideshow and set the frame rate to 30 frames per second. I then saved the file as a Quicktime movie. When I played the movie with my QuickTime Player, I could see actions for the first two seconds only. After that, the picture didn't change eventhough the progression bar was moving. Once the movie reached the end, the player then changed the frame to show the last picture of my slideshow.
In short, only the first 60 images are shown in the first 2 seconds. Then the slideshow was stuck with the 60th image, until it changed to the 300th image at the very end.
Does anybody has the same experience? Did I do anything wrong?

One more thing. If I set the frame rate to be less than 10 frames per second, it works fine. It just won't work with high frame rate.

• How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
Have fun.

• Problem when working with multiple sequences

Dears,
In order to make life easier (I am currently working on a rather long project), I work with multiple sequences, one per chapter.
My problem: I named one sequence "assembly sequences" in order to add the various sequences. I dropped the sequence no 1, then no 2. All works fine, beside that when playing the sequence no 2, I see two black lines on top and bottom of the screen for the all length of the sequence. Which is not the case when I click on the sequence itself and play it independently.
Any idea how to solve this ?
Thanks
Nic

Thanks, what happened is that :
1st sequence is like this : Frame size 720x576 pixels, video rate 25fps, Compressor DV-Pal. And I think it is the one appropriate for me and my country.
2nd sequence is like this : Frame size 720x480 pixels,
video rate 29.97 fps, Compressor DV-DVPRO-NTSC.
I think I should change the second sequence setting, but can I do it after all the work I have done, and continue making a 3rd, 4th and so on ?
Tx for your precious help,
Nicolas

• Understanding compositions with different frame rate

Hey everyone,
I am working with AVCHD footage with a frame rate of 25.
If it drop my footage into a new compostion after affects sets everything
up automatically.
I'd now like to what happens to my avchd clip if I change the frame rate
of my compostion from 25 to 24. What excatly happens to the frame
missing? Does AE just gets rid of it?
Does it make a difference if I just change my comp settings from 25 to 24
or if I drop my 25 comp into a new one with 24.
Thinking of it the other way around, if I change my frame rate from 25 to 50,
does that mean that AE doubles the frames of my files?
In general, does the changes have any impact on the speed of my footage?
I'm looking forward to your reply. Much appreciated.
Best,
Alex
PS: this count for Premier Pro aswell?

When you create a layer in a composition, and that layer is based on a video footage item, the composition checks at each composition frame to see (sample) the data from the footage item. If there isn't a single frame of data from the footage item that exactly lines up with the frame in the composition, then the composition samples from the footage frames on either side and does one of several things: It can either just pick one of the two frames, or it can just mix them together, or it can do something much smarter and try to reconstruct the image that would have existed between the two frames. What it does depends on what frame blending setting you're using.
When you're using a footage item that has a higher frame rate than your composition, and both frame rates are relatively high, you don't need to worry about this at all, as the default settings tend to work just fine.
To sum up, changing the frame rate of the composition just changes how often the composition samples the image data from the footage item. It does nothing to the footage item itslef and doesn't affect how fast the video from that footage item plays in a layer.
To interpret a footage item as being at another frame rate, or to conform a footage item to a frame rate, you have to use the Interpret Footage dialog box.
For more information, see "Frame rate".

• "Cannot play video with this frame rate&qu

For reasons that aren't important here I cannot use the Zen video converting software. Instead, I've been using the trial version of the Caniusoft Video to Creative Zen converter. Only once has a video played, but as soon as I closed the video and opened it up again this message appeared. "Cannot play video with this frame rate." Daniusoft offers frame rates from 5 fps to 30. I've tried all of them and none of them work. Has this been a problem for others? Perhaps I need a different converter?
ps.
..i'm converting flash video to avi. Does that make a difference?

I can't answer your question in full (maybe somebody else can). However, I am aware that both the Zen and the Zen X-Fi can only play video files up to 320x240 resolution. Previous players like the Vision M were able to scale files down to this resolution on the fly, but not these two newer players.

• Why do I get "Publish Failed" when I select F4V with fixed frame rate?

I have created several projects from scratch in Captivate 5. My publishing functionality seems to be increasingly impaired. I have rebooted and uninstalled + reinstalled Captivate 5.
In the beginning I got this message when I was publishing a specific project with the media option F4V with fixed frame rate, but now I am getting it on all my projects regardless of my publishing selections.
I am running on Windows 7, and I think it is Windows that is suggesting that I 'debug' the program. Clicking 'Debug' takes me to a dialog box where I can choose between Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio 2008, none of which seem to be a good solution.
Here is a print of my publishing options:

Chinmay Baid,
Thank you for your reply - over the past few days I have been able to
narrow the problem down a little more.
When working with Captivate 5, I am able to work with and open any
published file until I turn that file into a Zip file. Upon unZipping,
the file becomes unusable by my computer and by my LMS (Cornerstone).
I am using Adobe Flash Professional CS5 and I am able to run any SWF file
on my machine if the file has never been zipped. I am using Captivate 5
in administrator mode. Somehow, the zip process is making the files
unusable, and my LMS requires that files be zipped before they can be
uploaded.
Thank you for any advice or help you may be able to offer.

Hi,
Can you please give the following details :
Can you please check and tell the Flash player version
(plugin,activex,standalone) installed on your machine?
Also, are you able to play the standalone SWF on your machine?
Did you launch Adobe Captivate 5 in administrator mode?

• Concerning multiple frame-rates in one export file to perceive important necessary philosophies.

consider READ QUESTION, The following 4#'d Paragraphs should be skipped and not considered to be read and don't link
to my discussion it's question.
4.It's a strange world we live in, yet the wonders are revealed if realised once more.
Hello my dear friend or opposition. As this was my first post I represented my normal
thought flow throughout as it would be me daily, reflecting as necessary, apologizing in advance
if thrown out of balance.
1.Rather contradicing or raising questions, I would like to consider this very moment the age
of turn around points. As the evolution and perhaps one a day, revolution continues I would
like to take a moment to stand by this process, I conclude we are going towards the red pitt hole.
2. I also consider After Effect a program to allow whatever creativity could thrown at it, powered
by our imagination creating a new breed of cinema. I consider myself a philospher, always spellinG it
wrong but even thaT I consider mental restrictions only preventing me to reach out for your location,
wherever or however you may consider that to be so.
3. Proclaiming filters most out, but if I could only change one mind, I succeeded. I plan to rewrite
or so to speak, re-introduce what could be film and where we could are going with it, possibly. Film will
be an art that could differ as much as some painters have created unpredictably impossible differences
between them selfs. Concludingly art style differ so does reality, I am thanking the creators of After Effects,

QUESTION
Film=60:00 seconds
first 00:10 seconds=>a 2000FRAMES/s animation,
2nd 00:11-60:00 seconds=> 60FRAMES/s film.
Exports results in one frame-rate, I have done insufficient research as why this is still a limit,
or might not be because of simply not knowing enough yet. I created this story that could
potentially explain our source and the infinite continuation of that and why.
Thank you for your time, and I do appreciate it already if
you read this far. Information regarding the question is fine.

Imagine a movie theater. The projector is running happily away at 24 fps. All of a sudden you want to watch the movie at 60fps. You pick up your cell phone and call the lobby and talk to the manager. He thinks this is an interesting idea so he sends the projectionist up to the booth to look for a speed control on the projector. No luck, this one only runs at 24fps.
That's how video containers work. You render to a container (mov, avi, flv, whatever) and you've just bought a projector with only one speed. If you want to change speeds in the middle you have to have a very special projector. No way around that.
So the answer is that you can't render to the same container with different frame rates.
You can, however, in a single comp, have footage that runs from 1 frame per hour to 99 frames per second. You can interpret the footage placed in a comp at any frame rate from 1 per second to 99 frames per second, which would accomplish what you are trying to do, except for the part that the first hour of the movie rendered movie would contain more than one frame.
There are different types of containers however that can display each frame for a specific time interval. Animated Gif is the simplest movie container of this type. Flash is the most common. These are non standard video containers and you have to control the timing outside of AE.
It would help if we had a little less escortaric posing of your question. What exactly, in an actionable question, are you trying to do and why?

• Working with Multiple Files in Workspace Layout

If I was working with multiple files in the workspace layout, they each used to be available for selection from a tab. Now I can either cascade the files horizontally or vertically - but not have them appear in a tab across the top of the workspace layout.
Does anyone know how to set the workspace to present multiple files in tabs? I have CS3.

Tanya,
This may not help, but the times when that happens to me is when I go too fast and some operations haven't finished. I then try to select a file that hasn't completed and the file I select is in the process of having the data updated. The worst is when it is trying to render as I am doing something.
I hope this helps some.

• Working with multiple layers in CS 3 ?

In order to work with multiple layers in cs3, I first need to open few images to work with, and when I open few images it only shows last image that I opened.Frist images can't be seen in workspace, and when I open new document I can't see not even one photo I opened?

try tapping the F key a few times until you get to the screen mode that allows you to see all image windows.

• Why is scrolling not working with multiple youtube embeds layed out vertically in a stack on one page?

Why is scrolling not working with multiple youtube embeds layed out in a stack on one page?

Hi ,
This is a sort of performance issue , because your program takes more than the max time set for the program to execute in foreground.
There are many stuff in program which will hamper your performance.
I will list down a few
1. SELECT *
FROM konp
INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TABLE konp_itab
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN a363_itab
WHERE knumh EQ a363_itab-knumh
in this statement you are using for all entries a363_itab , but before this statement you are not checking if the table has any entry or not , please do remember that for all entries has this characterstic , that if you internal table does not contain any record , then all the records are selected from the database table. So in this case if you table a363_itab is empty , so what you want is no data must be seelcted from table konp , but what will happen is all the records in KONP will be seelcted.
2. While retreiving data you are using seelct * even though you do not require all the fields , an example is
SELECT *
FROM mkpf
INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS OF TABLE mkpf_itab
FOR ALL ENTRIES IN mseg_itab
WHERE mblnr EQ mseg_itab-mblnr.
in this your internal table contains only 2 fields
mblnr LIKE mkpf-mblnr, "Number of Material Document
bldat LIKE mkpf-bldat, "Document Date in Document , but to get these 2 fields you are selecting all the fields of the table.
3. In select you are using into corresponding fields of table , it is not a good practice., so please avoidd it.
Please understand that you must try to reduce the access to your database tables and try to keep it minimal , because this same thing may happen becasue data in DEV is very less compared to the volume of data in production , so a program working in DEV will take much more time in PRD if not written properly and may result in timeouts , as in your case.
Please try to make chanegs to the prorgam and see if it works.
In case you have more queries , please do revert back.
Regards
Arun

• Maintain performance while working with multiple shape layers (~50 )

Hey guys, I've been working on some projects lately where I need to animate a lot of shape layers cascading, arraying, with various animation properties. When I get to the point of using 30-60 or so shape layers, and they're all doing some kind of scale, position, etc. animations, my computer slows to a complete crawl. This then forces me into using a single shape layer and the repeater functions. These can work well sometimes, and don't hamstring the flexibility too much, UNTIL you need to incorporate varying colors. At that point, I usually switch my shape layers to masks and place a layer below with varying colors as needed. The shape animations then reveal those colors, but this doesn't work for a complex object that in itself requires many colors. Sooo...
What kind of workflows do you all have for working with multiple semi-complex objects at once? I figure I must be missing something, because this has gotten really limiting. Is everyone just working with 256GB of RAM?
FYI, my computer specs are:
2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
Thanks!!

Pre-comping can speed up your previews if you are using disk cache, but nothing will speed up your first ram preview or a ram preview after a keyframe change except a better optimized system. All it takes to slow things down is one effect or a footage file that causes AE to start consuming memory and processor power.
As a test I just created a gradient filled rectangle, added rotation keyframes, duplicated the layer so I have 64 copies on my Mac Mini and tried a ram preview compared with the same comp with only 1 layer. Almost no difference in the time it took to preview 10 seconds. Threw in a scale transform for all layers and again, not much difference between one shape layer and 64. To make things much harder I change the rectangle to a Polystar and animated everything in the Polystart transform properties, set up a composition with 128 duplicates and a comp with one layer. 2.5 seconds for a ram preview at quarter rez for a single layer, 10 seconds for a ram preview for 128 layers. That's more than acceptable to me for a two year old Mac Mini with 16 gb of ram. Increasing the zoom factor to 50% with Resolution set to Auto doubled the ram preview time which was still acceptable.
This makes me wonder what else is going on in your composition. Any effects or other things going on? Have you optimized your system for maximum performance? There are links with suggestions for doing that all over this site as well as the Adobe recommendations found here: Optimizing After Effects Performance
