X201 bent (bloated) & creaking keyboard

Hey guys, could you please let me know if I'm going crazy or if there's really something wrong with my unit?
I received my brand new X201 yesterday in the afternoon. After cloning its HDD throughout the night and for almost another half a day with Lenovo's R&R, Windows System Image tool and ATIH (the latter takes FOREVER!!!), I finally fired it up. Well, only a couple of minutes later I realized that apparently Windows 7 (which should be genuine) "cannot be activated as my product key is invalid". What's more I realized the upper left hand side of the keyboard is all bent and bloated - if I press on it I can push it a couple of milimeters and it also makes a nasty clicking sound. The whole upper part of the keyboard easily gives in when I apply a bit of pressure, and I'm not sure if that's how it should be. However, at least the upper right hand side is even - it's the upper left hand side that is definitely not.
On top of this, the screen ribbon cable seems super exposed (too exposed?), and when I again press the screen and the lower body together (after taking the battery out just to make sure it's not battery-related) I can again reproduce that clicking sound, which is now even nastier. I'm FAR from happy. Have had this laptop for a bit more than 24 hours (out of which the majority was spent imaging its HDD) and have literally used it for less than 2 hours... I've already called Lenovo's tech support and they told me to give their Sales Dept a call on Monday so that they can arrange an exchange (i.e. a brand new unit) for me... Given that the laptop is 24h old, I definitely don't want to have it taken apart and have it fixed, I spent far too much $$$ on it (I can fix pretty much everything, but I'm for sure not taking the X201 apart myself, especially as a 24h-old laptop should be in perfect condition). Well, we'll see, I hope Lenovo will be cooperative.

Thanks for your feedback mate, I'm at least happy to hear that I'm not overexaggerating. Been a longtime Thinkpad fan (and user) and buying one of their laptops was always a no-brainer for me: I always expected the best and I always got it.
This time, however, the whole experience of buying a laptop that retails for around $2000 has been rather disappointing. Something is obviously very wrong with the keyboard, Windows 7 came with an invalid key, the keyboard is not as spectacular as it used to be (apparently it's a Chicony, just checked the FRU) and the "compatible" Lenovo sleeve I got is a joke (it's apparently designed for an X20x with a 9-cell battery; if you have a 4- or 6-cell one, it's way too big which kind of defeats its purpose). Anyway, I'll return the X201 and demand a brand new unit (and ask for an NMB keyboard, if that's even possible), plus I'll return the sleeve as I have no use for it. To be honest, I don't expect any problems, but I guess I won't know until Monday. Will definitely get back. Thanks again... (not sure about the IBM vs. Lenovo issue, as Lenovo was manufacturing Thinkpads for IBM way before IBM got rid of its laptop branch...)

Not sure I really follow what you're trying to say, especially as I'm pretty sure even Japanese Thinkpads are manufactured in China (I might be wrong, though)

The Windows itself installs without any issue, but for some reason the keyboard drivers seem to be out of order. They will either not load up at all, or take incredibly long time to load up.
I've tried endless versions of Drivers, but none of them works to me. Newest drivers just don't work at all, and very old, early Windows 7 drivers and Vista-era drivers also have some problems.

External ThinkPad USB Keyboard with TrackPoint issues with scroll (55Y9003) and hotkeys on a x201

Once more there is a glitch with the drivers for this external keyboard 55Y9003.
I have the drivers:
16.2.19.13 for the ultranav system of the x201
1.10 for the external keyboard
My system is XP sp3.
The keyboard of the x201is fine relative to the one 55Y9003.
The scrolling is set to standard for both systems.
Please do not advise to select smooth; it is not a solution and the smooth scrolling has been systematically utterly unusable.
The issues:
-the hotkeys on the external keyboards are not all working:
basically, fn+f4 and fn+nmlk work but the rest does not (say fn+f8)
-the scrolling of the external keyboard is not at all identical to the scrolling of the x201.
For instance, in pdfs viewed with foxit for instance, I have not a problem to scroll horizontally with the x201 starting with the hand tool.
WIth the external keyboard, whan I press the middle button to activate the scrolling, it remains the hand tool, I can scroll vertically but not horizontally.
FIrefox as also issues whith the middle button.
-the external keyboard still suffers from the sticky shift key.
I know the x201 and the 55Y9003 are no longer fashionable, but Is there some directly guy working at Lenovo who could help ?

I have the ThinkPad USB keyboard on a non-Lenovo desktop, and it works.
Yes the keyboard driver installs, but not the Lenovo System Interface Driver, for obvious reasons. All the buttons and TrackPoint work.
Yes the TrackPoint does not scroll in all programs. Search the community for "trackpoint scroll fix" and you will come up with instructions on how to fix this.

My laptop keyboard is having problems. I took it if to change my bottom case it worked fine prior and then after just the power key worked. I cleaned everything nothing is bent in the cable. now my power key is not working

X201 Ultrabase Keyboard / Mouse Issues

I have recently deployed 3 identical X201 systems with the Ultrabase to some of my users, they are imaged systems and should all work virtually the same but one is having an odd quirk. If he turns the system on while it is docked, the external mouse & keyboard he has connected to the Ultrabase do not respond unless he first opens the laptop and uses the normal keyboard / touchpad. I can't see any reason for this to be happening but I am hoping someone has come across this before, hopefully it is not an issue with the dock itself.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Weird sound from x201 keyboard

recently i've found a weird problem with my x201 keyboard. when i press down on the area where the escape key is or around the area where the volume controls are, it will make a plasticy click sound.the sound happens as soon as i let my finger off that part of the keyboard. sometimes when i press that area and let go it takes a while for that part of the keyboard to bounce back up and make the sound. so it sounds like that area of the keyboard stays in place for a while sometimes before it jumps back to the natural position. no i've never spiilled anything on the keyboard. i'm not putting a lot of pressure on that area either. it could happen if i just tap that area of the keyboard. and i've taken the keyboard off but couldn't see anything that could make the sound. any idea how to fix this? is this a problem with the keyboard or the laptop bezel?
also will lenovo just ship me a new keyboard for free if i ask? what number or email address would i have to contact?

X230 bad quality keyboards - slanted, loose and bent keys

Hi folks, got recently a brand new X230 - so far, I'm quite happy with it except for the keyboard. The cursor keys on the first keyboard I got were slanted upwards on their left edge, as if the spring mechanic beneath them were aligned incorrectly, not right in size. The keys neither did fit entirely correctly and came loose. Then, after phoning with the support twice, sending pictures and arguing for a while, I got a new keyboard. Result: Quite the same lousy quality again: Cursor keys are slanted upwards on their left side (which is very irritating) very much like with the original keyboard, but this time they are at least not loose. Instead, the F9 key is now on its lower left edge bent upwards as if it was forced out of its mold when it was still hot and flexible - which looks pretty irritating, not to say broken. Technically, it is not loose, but it is only held down on three instead of four points, the lower left corner makes no contact to the mechanic beneath. Gaps between the keys are not aligned and irregular, and too close between F9 and F8 which might have caused this flaw during production. Moreover, ESC and DEL key are slightly tilted out of alignment (rotated inwards), probably also by forcing them out of their mold too early. Just saw a couple of Lenovo notebooks elsewhere (W-series IIRC) with the same keyboard, but good quality, so reasonably quality keyboards should at least exist in some place. I really don't want to argue with support anymore - they keep telling me it's only "an optical flaw". But folks, if I spend >1000€ for a notebook, I prefer "good quality", and not something that looks as if I found it in the grocery store next corner. Is there anything else to do? I'm tired of fighting with the support.

The older aluminum wired keyboards you have probably won't work with the newer Macs you have as these keyboards have a different version number.
Apple keeps revising these wired aluminum models and the older versions, at some point, do not work with new or newer Macs.
There is really no fixing these. They either work or they don't

Slightly bent frame on T61, causes many creaks and flexes

After using my Thinkpad T61 for about 2 months, I just knew there was something that didn't feel quite right about the build quality. The palmrest showed a noticeable amount of flex, and one of the rubber feet was elevated 1-2mm off any flat surface (only the center part would touch the table). This basically meant that the frame wasn't completely straight on my Thinkpad.
I compared my Thinkpad to 2 from my friends; one is a 14.1" just like mine (but integrated graphics) and shows absolutely no flex in the classis. The other, a 15.4" T61, showed a very slight bit, but much less than mine.
What will Lenovo do to fix the bad build on my T61? I am in college right now, so it would be inconvenient unless Lenovo could cross-ship me a new unit. However, the bad build quality on mine really annoys me, especially with the Thinkpads' reputation for great chassis quality. The entire right side of my laptop literally moves up and down about 3-4mm if pressed on, even lightly.
Also, would Lenovo let me keep my HDD? That way, I could just pop it into the replacement without having to worry about backing up work or re-installing Windows all over again.
P.S. The headphone jack on mine apparently seems to be a little faulty also; I have to orient my headphones at a very precise angle, or I hear a lot of hissing in the background.

Here is a picture of the "bent" right side; notice that the rubber feet don't make full contact with the table. I've tried this on many flat surfaces and it creaks and flexes whenever I put my right hand on the palmrest.

yes, the T61 have got some flex at the right side above the hdd.
R models are heavier but have little flex, the T model are made out of very light
and carbon enhanced plastic materials. You can try to put a piece of thick paper under the palm rest.
The chassis and audio problem have to be repaired and I would suggest to send it to depot.
Please mention your palmrest flex also.
You can dismount your hdd to keep it at home. It´s a CRU (customer replaceble unit).

X201 Keyboard not taking inputs

Running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise on a X201 Core i7 620M laptop with 8 GB of RAM. All installed by Lenovo.
I haven't been able to pinpoint the cause, but at random intervals the keyboard will stop taking inputs through Windows operating system. Pressing the Fn key and the appropriate Function key will activate said function, however the keyboard itself for anything else will not take input.
I have had no issues when an external keyboard is plugged in, but when using the Lenovo ThinkPad keyboard itself, it happens every so often without warning or trace in the error logs. I've experienced this across other W510 and T410 models as well.
All patches from TVSU were installed prior to Windows Update.
Any thoughts on where to point to? It's happened three times this evening while not plugged in to a power outlet, however for the past week performance has been solid with no issues.
Wondering if anyone else has this issue? Am I missing a driver?

Oddly if I plug in a USB keyboard, I'm able to type using the USB keyboard, but the keyboard within the laptop is effectively dead (though it will take Fn key combinations and work in a sub operating / BIOS level for things like PGP disk / TrueCrypt).
There are no errors spawned throughout the error logs - I looked through about everything.
I've gone in and changed the USB Selective Suspend setting in power settings to be disabled to see if this perhaps is the issue.
This is happening across Windows 7 x64 Enterprise. No real rhyme or reason to what is triggering it, but it's across all ThinkPad platforms - really starting to get frustrated as it's improbable that it's hardware.

Might have lost a keyboard screw for x201

i think i might have lost one of 4 of the screws securing the keyboard. It doesn't make a difference, but these small things bother me lol. I saw on ebay a lot of screw kits for the x200 but none for the x201. My question is, do they use the same screws at least for the keyboard? I don't think it would be practical to call warranty for a little screw would it? lol

the x200 and x201 uses the same screw and parts.
warranty won't send out the screw to you unless it is them that caused this problem.

Installing German keyboard on new x201

I just bought a new x201 and want to install a German keyboard myself. I have take a look at the hardware installation guide online and it says to use new screws when changing hardware and not to resuse the old ones. I assume this has to do with them being coated. Is this actually necessary or will I be fine using the old ones.

These screws are nylon coated to prevent corrosion and acts as a dry lubrication. But you don't need to replace them. Actually Lenovo warranty depot reuses them to, so you shouldn't have a problem.

MacBook Air makes creaking sound when put pressure around keyboard

Had my Mac for three weeks now and have recently noticed that every time I place my hands on the device to type it makes a creaking sound, almost like it has become loose. Sharing a house with someone who has the exact same model and they have never experienced the problem. Any ideas???

You did reset SMC.
Resetting SMC resolves power and other related issues.

"Fan error" on Thinkpad X201s

Hello,
My X201s surprisingly overheated and soft-shut down. Upon rebooting the BIOS interrupted startup just to say "Fan Error" and shut down again. Has anyone seen this issue before? Up until now the fan has been working!
I took the keyboard off, and as soon as I press the power button, I see the fan spin for a few seconds then stop - it does not start again and says fan error. I have blown all the dust out, and the fan turns very freely - is there anything else I should try before I send the laptop to be repaired (it is still in warranty but it is a bit of a bore!)?

Either the fan is running a little slow or the temperature sensor circuitry is sick. Send it in. It is a pain, but it is the best choice.

Keyboard/trackpad problems - are Macbook top cases too fragile?

I'm starting to wonder if the top case with keyboard/trackpad is the Achilles heel of the black and white Macbooks 2007-08. I'm having problems with 3 different Macbooks.
On one, a 2.1Ghz from 2008, no internal keyboard/trackpad is recognized by the Macbook. Its original kb/tp just stopped working one day. I removed the top case and checked the connections, as well as any dust or bent pins in the socket on the logic board, but all seemed ok. Reassembled, but kb/tp still not working. I then replaced the top case with another one that I knew was working, but still no go.
Any ideas? The MB boots fine (even with the original top case installed) and works great with external kb/mouse.
On a second, a 2.16Ghz from 2007, the kb/tp suddenly stopped working one day. I'd opened the MB a couple of times just before, but I'm pretty careful and don't think I broke the cable or anything else. All the pins and the cable seem fine, as does the socket on the logic board. Here too, an external mouse/kb work perfectly.
I tried another working top case and this time it seemed to work okay. But after a day or two, it stopped working too. I then reassembled it, thinking there might be something pushing up on the keyboard, or maybe some screws loose. And once again it seemed to work.
I also noticed something odd: a couple of times at first, when I'd just reassembled the top case, the kb/tp weren't recognized. But then when the MB woke from Sleep, I heard the hard drive and DVD spin up, and suddenly the kb/tp were working again.
Anyway, after a couple of days the kb/tp stopped working again.
Question: how can the kb/tp work for a couple days, then suddenly stop working? If it were broken, wouldn't it always not work?
The 3rd Macbook is a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo from early 2007. Its kb/tp stopped working too (unrecognized by system, etc.). I swapped the kb/tp from the 2008 2.1Ghz onto it and this seems to have fixed the problem. It's been a few weeks now and I haven't had any trouble with it.
Question: would swapping in the top cases from different models create any problems? I see that they sometimes aren't perfect fits in terms of looks, but the screws are in the same place and everything installs pretty solidly. IIRC you have to be careful re. mixing top cases with an orange trackpad cable and a silver one, but in my case all of them had silver cables.
This is really getting to be a problem. I've got the 2 fast well-upgraded Core 2 Duo Macbooks sitting here, working perfectly apart from the kb/tp.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Sorry, just wanted to add in concluding that there seem to be 2 different problems.
1) with the 2.1Ghz from 2008, no working top case seems to work, so it doesn't seem to be a top case problem, but rather a problem with the connection to the logic board or somewhere else.
2) with the 2.16 from 2007, here it does seem to be a problem with the top case.
Unfortunately I don't have what I know to be a good, working top case to try on the 2.16. I think with all the assembling/disassembling, the semi-decent kb/tp I had may now have problems too.

Problem with trackpad and keyboard on Macbook Pro

I have a Macbook Pro Early '09 (I got it about 1 month ago used) and yesterday a problem occurred. Suddenly, as I was typing a message, the keyboard stopped responding and the trackpad started acting up. Whenever I tapped with 1 finger, it would mark the text or would show the right-click options ("Copy, Cut, Paste" etc on text or "New Folder" etc on desktop).
I restarted it thinking that it would probably solve the problem, but then I couldn't even log in, because not all keys were working, so I couldn't enter the password. Pressing "O" seemed to work -not always though-, but other keys didn't. I logged in as guest user, since no password is required for that, and tried typing a URL on Google Chrome, just to see what happens. there I noticed that sometimes the F letter key would work as right arrow and A as left.
I should finally note that certain applications would not open lately (for the past weeks) and would "quit unexpectedly" (HDRtist and Inkscape, to be specific).
So, maybe it needs a Disk Utility Repair? Is it possible that this would solve both problems? But how do i do that if I can't log in as admin?
It would be better to find a way to solve this on my own without having to pay for the repair.
Any ideas?
I know it's a common problem and that it's been posted many times, but most answers on other discussions have confused me so far.
I've read about the tape under the battery thing, but I'd prefer a different solution if anyone can offer one.

I have read of people saying Resetting SMC fixes stuck touchpad drag problems. In order to do this you must typically remove the battery. I think it was the act of battery removal that fixed it and not the act of clearing SMC memory.
If your Macbook battery is removable and is located directly under your touchpad a bloated swollen battery could be the problem.
Try this:
Remove battery
Connect to magsafe power and boot up.
Try using your touchpad
If this fixes the problem you likely have a swollen or bloated lithium battery. My symptoms on my 15" late 2008 Macbook Pro were that the touchpad acted like it was stuck in drag mode. The bottom left and right touchpad switches would not click or took great effort to press. I had to hit the touchpad very hard for a mouse click to be recognized. It also screwed up opration of my bluetooth mouse. I noticed several months earlier the battery cover no longer closed tightly; there was a gap. I should have been more curious as to why.
