X86_64: Skype2.0 - "RtApiOss: OSS playback device (/dev/dsp) is busy."

I should say that I managed to get Skype to work by installing the 32-bit alsa-oss and passing Skype through it (i.e. "aoss skype").
What's confusing to me is that, according to ArchWiki, versions 2.0 and up have native ALSA support. This means that alsa-oss should no longer be necessary, right?
Running plain Skype in a terminal, I always get the error "RtApiOss: OSS playback device (/dev/dsp) is busy."
dsp_hijacker has no effect in this case, nor does adding
pcm.dmixout {
# Just pass this on to the system dmix
type plug
slave {
pcm "dmix"
to my ~/.asoundrc (as the wiki suggests). The latter does nothing; running Skype by itself with this modification produces the same error, and Skype with aoss32 works without an .asoundrc.
Is there some obvious solution that I'm missing?

@themaister: thanks for pointing that out!
I removed those modules from rc.conf and added my soundcard modules (according to wiki):
MODULES=(snd-ice1724 snd-intel8x0 snd-pcm-oss)
I now have "dev/dsp" and "/dev/dsp1", but still no "/dev/sound/dsp" (though I'm not sure if I need this).
Hmmmm... It works! I don't know what did it. I retried several steps of the wiki. The last steps I tried were adding my cards with indices to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf and having alsaconf set up /dev/modprobe.d/sound.conf. Outputs are stille the same as in my first thread. Maybe I got mixed up along the way with pulseaudio installation/removal and blacklisting modules...

  • /dev/dsp on Solaris 10

I'm running Solaris 10 3/05 on a Dell Optiplex GX260. I installed the audio drivers for my hardware and have a /dev/audio device that gives me basic sound. However, when I start up xmms it complains that there's no /dev/dsp device. Sure enough, there's no /dev/dsp device.
    How can I get a /dev/dsp device?
    Thanks.

On a Dell Optiplex 745 running Solaris 10 11/06 the built-in Intel soundcard wasn't supported by the OS, so I installed the OSS audio drivers from here:
    http://www.4front-tech.com/oss.html
    which enabled the soundcard.
I installed xmms from the Solaris 10 companion DVD and upon trying to play a file got the message:
** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such file or directory
Checking the output of "ossinfo -v" it turns out the legacy device link for the Intel audio output is named /dev/dsp0 so once the:
    xmms --> Preferences --> Audio I/O Plugins --> OSS Driver 1.2.10 --> Configure --> Audio Device
was changed from "Default (Intel HD Audio play output)" to "Use alternate device: /dev/dsp0"
    everything worked fine.

  • No /dev/dsp, some programs failed to play sound

I'm using chakra-2010.09 and there is no /dev/dsp after a default installation. Programs using phonon as backend (KDE's login music and the default music player, Bangarang) can play sound without problems. But others like vlc, flashplugin and wine cannot. Vlc just report errors about no /dev/dsp. How can this be fixed?
Then I tried #modprobe snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_seq_oss, the module created /dev/dsp1. then I maked a soft link to /dev/dsp but vlc said "cannot open device /dev/dsp".
I also tried using osspd and vlc can play sound now, but flashplugin and wine still have problems.

  • No Digital Output available in Playback devices (USB audio device)

If one has USB audio device with coax/toslink out, with proper drivers (like ie TurtleBeach Micro Advantage) available & installed then Digital Output is available to select in Playback devices. (and one can play AC3/DTS to external amplifier with ie
VLC or MPC-HT with AC3Filter DS filter)
But some USB devices (ie Phonic Digitrack -
http://www.phonic.com/en/digitrack.html ) do NOT come with drivers (as Windows has default build in). Digitrack uses TI
    Burr-Brown USB Audio Codec 2906 -
    http://www.ti.com/product/pcm2906
Sadly these Windows drivers do NOT have a clue about what the device actually has as inputs/outputs
So even it had coax digital out & the sound IS send via it, the actual data send is in right way, not recognized/played correctly by Digital Amplifier (AC3/DTS)
Does anybody know of a hack to make Digital Out available?
    Seb

    Hi,
Generally speaking, An Audio Device do need more driver besides USB driver to make itself work properly. In terms of your situation, USB driver is not enough to make your Audio Device works properly.  I think S.Sengupta
is right. Actually it would be better to contact Digitrack support to confirm its product compatibility with Windows 7.

  • No Sound Device/Playback Device --At the end of my rope

First let me state that I've tried several methods to fix my problem already, and none appear to help or work, I've followed the advice given by several others, and I'm really not sure what I can do at this point. I even bought a new Soundcard thinking it would solve the problem...but it has not.
If I were to go into Device Manager right now, Windows detects TWO Audio Devices:
    Soundblaster Xi-Fi Extreme Audio
Vinyl AC '97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
The latter I can easily disable in BIOS on Startup, but this does not help me one bit.
I have checked my Sounds and Audio Devices:
No Audio Device/No Playback Device/Sound Recording is Soundblaster/Midi is Creative SoundFont Synth/No Voice Playback/Voice Recording is Soundblaster.
I have checked my Services (Local):
Windows Audio Service is "Started" and set to Automatic?
I have checked other media devices and get errors regarding "Direct Sound" or "Wave Out".
Regarding the programs related to my drivers, I have tried to uninstall them and reinstall them in Safe Mode but this has not helped. In particular one of the programs VIA Audiodeck (related to my onboard audio) cannot seem to find certain files to uninstall itself, aside from the fact it couldn't run when I installed it in the first place. (In part I'm looking for a free program that can uninstall stuff that can't be uninstalled the usual way).
Finally I've discovered I'm getting errors in trying to check for Windows Updates (even though I have Service Pack 3 now). Windows Automatic Updates says it's "On" but doesn't show up.
I don't really know what the root of my problem is, as I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers several times (even attempted to?clean up the registry from leftover fragments). I've used programs like Belarc Advisor and Driver Scan but these don't tell me what to do or how to proceed. I'm at my wit's end here.

  • Loss of sound due to no playback devices following an system update.

I have a Model #: 23-c055, Product #: H4A31AA#ABA.  My machine was updated over the weekend with an automatic update and now my playback devices for both video and audio are gone.  The selections within Device management are not available for selection to modify.  HELP!

    Nina, welcome to the forum.
You should go into Control Panel / Sound and check to assure that your sound device is selected as the Default.  This is most likely what has changed.  Here is how to reset the default device:
    Instructions:
1 Press the "Windows Key" and "R" keys simultaneously to load a Run box
2 Type "mmsys.cpl" and click "OK." This loads Windows Sound and Audio.
    3 Click the "Sound" tab.
4 Click the drop-down menu under "Sound Scheme" and select "Windows Default."
5 Click "Apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.
Please click "KUDOS Thumbs Up" if I have helped you and click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved.

  • Bluetooth headset pairs, but is not available as playback device

    Hi there
I am trying to pair and use my MEElectronics Runaway bluetooth stereo headset (with microphone) with my Zbook. I am following the instructions at MEElectronics available here http://www.meelec.com/Articles.asp?ID=352#ytplayer
I make the device discoverable and am able to pair the devices.
I select the device in Windows and it says 'connecting to device' then 'configuring device'. Then
'This device has been successfully added to this computer. Windows is now checking for drivers and will install them if necessary. You may need to wait for this to finish before your device is ready to use. To verify if this device finished installing properly, look for it in Devices and Printers.'
I click on Devices and Printers, and find the Air-Fi Runaway.
I click on volume system icon to select it as a playback device, but it is not listed there.
How do I guarantee that Windows actually downloads and installs the drivers to make this work? It doesn't appear to be doing so automatically as per what happened above.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

    hello,
the reason the driver is not installed is because there is no windows 7/8 64bit driver available .
I have the same problem with another kind of headphones, soundpeats qy7 .
I keep searching and hoping that maybe a driver will be completed and published .

  • No HDMI Audio, Failed to Play Test Tone, Can't Change Default Playback Device

Hello, I'm experiencing some real trouble with my HP Pavilion dv6-2160us (with the i3-330M, no dedicated graphics) Windows 7-64 bit, SP1 PC, and I would greatly appreciate some assistance.
I've created a new thread because, despite the fact that many other people have experienced a problem similar to this and have posted what worked for them, nothing has worked for me.
    The Problem(s):
My main problem is that I cannot get any audio to play from my PC to my HDMI HDTV.
When I plug my HDMI cable into my PC and TV, the TV is recognized in Playback Devices, but nothing can play to it.
When I try to test the TV in playback devices, I get a "Failed to play test tone" error.
Additionally, I'd like to mention some other odd behavior that I think may be a part of the main problem.
In Playback Devices, I cannot change anything. I can't disable or enable a device, I can't set default playback or communication devices, and I can't save changes inside device properties. Every time I try to change something, like the default playback device, nothing happens or the changes are immediately reversed.
    The Question:
How can I get audio to play over HDMI on my PC (It's not a problem with the TV, my other HP machines play audio over HDMI to it just fine.)?
    What I've Tried:
    I have tried:
Changing the default playback devices, which I'm unable to do
Running the Windows 7 Audio Playback troubleshooters from within a clean boot state
Uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel(R) Display Audio driver
Uninstalling and reinstalling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
Uninstalling the IDT PC Audio program from Programs and Features
Disabling the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    Nothing has worked.
The drivers I have are the latest issued by HP
How can I get this working? I would really appreciate some assistance.
I'm at the point where I'm ready to try pretty technically-involved suggestions, so, please feel free to post those.
    Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • W540 no HDMI audio in playback devices

    Hello,
i am trying to get the miniDisplayport to pass audio. i have a minidisplay port to HDMI adapter, a HDMI cable and a TV that i know can recieve HDMI audio.
however, there isnt an option for HDMI/displayport in the listing of playback devices:
    what can i do?
    thanks,
    Tom

Assuming your W540 has an nVidia discrete graphics chip, the miniDP port is part of the nVidia graphics digital audio hardware, not the Realtek HD Audio analog (i.e. speakers/headphone) hardware.  Have you installed the latest nVidia drivers?
I have a W530 and not a W540, but I would think if you had the proper current nVidia drivers installed it would also have included not only the graphics driver but the HDMI audio driver as well in the package.  When you connect the TV with the miniDP->HDMI cable you should see that digital audio option available in "playback devices".
Here's my own experiment a while back, connecting my own W530's miniDP output through a miniDP->HDMI cable (I don't use and adapter + HDMI cable, I use a simple straight-through cable with miniDP at one end and HDMI at the other) to my Panny 65VT50 HDTV.  Note that the digital audio option from nVidia was checked as the default in "playback devices", and I DID get sound from my TV.
Note that on my W530 I DO NOT USE OPTIMUS!!!  I have "discrete graphics" specified in the BIOS, and the built-in Intel HD4600 graphics is NOT BEING USED AT ALL!!  The Intel graphics doesn't show up in Device Manager, nor does it show up in nVidia Control Panel.  Again... I DO NOT USE OPTIMUS.
I run strictly using the nVidia K1000M on my W530, and am using the latest nVidia retail graphics driver 340.66 downloaded from the nVidia driver site and installed with my W530 in "discrete graphics" mode. Thus the miniDP connector on the W530 is guaranteed to be controlled by the K1000M, both for external monitor/TV video as well as for external digital audio.

  • How do I get Independent Headphone to be the default playback device in Beats Audio?

In the Beats Audio control panel (I own a Pavilion dv7-4051nr) the only option listed for Independent Headphone is default communication device. The only time I have been able to enable Independent Headphone for sound playback was through Windows Media Player (Tools>Options>Devices>Speakers>Properties). I thought the audio was superior and played louder compared to using the Speakers and Headphones as playback device for headphone listening. However, the next time I logged on and attempted to play a CD with Independent Headphone there was no sound output despite the fact that the Independent Headphone volume control on the taskbar indicated it was working. When I switched to Speakers and Headphones, sound was delivered to the headphones as normal.

    Hi rIntsn,
I think you can get it back by doing an application/driver recovery. Here is a link to an HP Support document on how to use the driver or application recovery feature.
Just install the Audio related software and hardware drivers.

ERROR: Unable to find root device /dev/sdb1

Is there an easy way to convert to UUID or Disk Label since the latest Upgrade doesn't allow me to continue to use /dev/sdb1 ??
