Yosemite system 'pauses'

My computer installed the 10.10.2 update the other night and since then my mid-2010 iMac, which had been performing flawlessly for almost four years, will now FREQUENTLY will 'pause' or slowdown across all programs, not just in one program, i.e.: iTunes will pause music on its own (without skipping) before resuming, the spinning wheel will come up for 5-10 seconds, and the entire computer will be unresponsive at random intervals with no rhyme or reason to what triggers it (even as I write this, the computer will pause and I'll have to retype whatever I tried typing). The only programs I'm running at any given time are iTunes, Safari, and Pages (as I'm in the middle of my dissertation), which are the exact same programs as I've been running this entire time; the only change (that I am aware of) to my computer in the past 24-48 hours is the 10.10.2 update. I've seen other threads in these communities talking about similar issues and I was thinking that maybe the common thread is that maybe the update is just a bit too much for computers with the original 4GB RAM installed to handle. Here's my full EtreCheck report, and other people experiencing similar issues should feel free to post their problems and EtreCheck reports here so we can try to determine whether this is, in fact, stemming from the 10.10.2 update, or not.
Problem description:
Up until the recent Yosemite update (10.10.2) my computer performed flawlessly, with almost no pauses in Safari and at no time did a pause or slowdown in any program cause a similar issue in other programs. Now in the last 24 hours, my entire computer will pause or slowdown, including my iTunes *pausing* without skipping for a period of 5-10 seconds, at random and frequent intervals, despite having only Safari, iTunes, and maybe Pages or Preview open (that is, the exact same programs and same CPU activity load as the past four years before this recent update). The only thing that’s new in the last 24-48 hours it the 10.10.2 update that was automatically pushed by Apple into the App Store.

Your hard drive is failing. Plus, you only have 4 GB RAM. Have your internal hard drive replaced with an SSD. And as long as you are taking it in for service, get as much additional RAM as you can. Then you should be fine.

  • Yosemite on Pause

Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I'm on Snow Leopard (10.6.8) right now, but my computer is partitioned, to where I can use Yosemite on it also.  I upgraded Lion to Yosemite, (really love it) but  the Startup disk with Yosemite no longer showed up like it did when I was on the Startup disk using Lion. So, to be able to switch back and forth between systems, I used the Terminal and typing in (diskutil cs list diskutil coreSorage revert lvUUID) which would take me to the gray screen with the two disks, plus recovery disk. I tried restoring Yosemite using SL, but I interrupted it in mid stream and I tried going back to the Yosemite startup disk and although the partition is still there, but it shows up as "Untitled," and it's empty.  I went to the app store and I'm in the middle of downloading Yosemite again, but I don't want it taking over the partition with Snow Leopard on it, because I don't want Yosemite taking over completely.  I have to many important files on SL.  Where on my computer is Yosemite being downloaded? I can't seem to locate it, which leads me to believe that it will be installed over my SL.  Am I right about this?  Any help would be appreciated and if you let me know right away it would also be appreciated, since I can't keep the downloading procedure for Yosemite on pause forever.  Thank you so much!  -Della

Ok, never mind.  I think I may have found the answer. Being that I have hardly ever gotten any answers to my questions, basically renders this discussion board practically useless. Thanx.  -Della

I need help, yesterday I installed and reinstalled the Yosemite system and take long to turn on my laptop, the bar takes to fill, and I'm worried.
    Can you help? thank

revert back to Maverick that is what I had to finally do. This was the worst upgrade I have ever seen. Hopefully you have Time Machine backup and can revert back. It was pretty painless except for a few issues. I will wait until Apple gets their stuff together on this upgrade or may never will.

  • PC54G2 and system pauses

    Hi Guys,
Ive had my machine about 3 years now, and its been a trooper. Never had any problems. Well I replaced my 10/100 NIC with a PC54G2, and it appears to connect fine etc, but it pauses my system constantly. Like ever second or so, as I move my mouse across the screen even, it pauses the cursor and everything else.
If I disable the card un network connections, the computer is smooth again.
    Any hints?
    Cheers,
    Ky

    Hi Jerry
I've done that and just sat and watched the various performance metrics. When the system pauses, even the task manager pauses and it doesn't record any specific resource hog that might be causing the lag. One would think that with this duo processor and 4 GB of RAM that it wouldn't be freezing up like that. I have an old Dell that I run both Windows and Linux on and I never have issues like I have with this piece of garbage. I've tracked I/O reads, I/O writes, handles, and other metrics as well. I am going to try an experiment and see if it only happens when Internet Exploder is running because that particular program always shows the most activity for reads, writes, handles, memory usage, and such. I seem to remember it being a problem regardless of what is running but I want to check it out nonetheless.
    Thanks.

Define "simple function". There are thousans of functions in the C  standard library: how do you tell "simple" from "complex" ones?

  • Yosemite System Crashes on Boot with Dell U2713HM

Previously under Mavericks I had no issue with a Dell U2713HM monitor and my 'non-stock' NVidia card.  (The reason I'm using the video card I am is because the stock ATI card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT) is known do fry itself which I discovered after replacing it with an identical card and having the 2nd one fry itself after a year.  I did a lot of research and settle don the card I now have because others had reported success with it.  It worked fine for nearly a year until updating to Yosemite.)
After upgrading to Yosemite my system went into an infinite reboot loop on startup.  On a hunch, I swapped out my U2713HM for an old 17" monitor and was able to boot.  I can't even have the U2713HM plugged in/turned off using the second port on the card without the system crashing.  If I get the system booted using the 17", I can then plug in/turn on the U2713HM and set the resolution - at that point I can (sometimes) boot but it will then crash on shutdown triggering an automatic restart.
Is anyone having any success with a U2713HM, and especially with an NVidia card?  The only option I haven't tried is a completely fresh, clean install.  Once the system boots, I get the dialog that it was restarted because of an issue and can view part of the dump info that will be sent to Apple -> that clearly indicates the issue is with the kernel/NVidia driver somewhere.
System specs:  Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an NVidia GeForce GTX 650 1024MB card installed running Yosemite (OS X 10.10)

My mac mini (late 2012, Yosemite installed) doesn't start with Dell U2713HM if the USB cable of the monitor is connected.
No problems if I connect the usb-cable after successful startup. Also the usb-hub of the Dell is working fine then.

  • Strange system pause while using OS X on Mac mini

My Mac mini has always had a funny little problem. As you are working along, choosing menu commands and pressing buttons, the mini will make a sound like a sigh and stop responding for maybe a second or two. Then all is well and you're back to normal. This seems to happen randomly but regularly (fairly frequently). Any ideas or suggestions you might have would be appreciated. I'm not even quite sure how to phrase the question to search the support files.

Thanks - that information helps, even if only to eliminate a couple of possible causes!
It seems to me to be likely that the noise and pause are related to system activity, thus your observation that it may seem to happen when you 'do something' is likely right. As such it will be interesting to know if MenuMeters shows an unusual rise in paging or CPU load when it occurs, or even if it seems related to network traffic.
There is also a possibility that the symptoms are related to an underlying issue with MacOS on your system, so after following Daddy Paycheck's suggestion regarding checking your hard drive and then checking MenuMeters, I'd suggest a download of YASU (http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/) and after quitting all other applications, setting to run all tasks. YASU is a basic set of utilities for doing routine maintenance on the system, notably repairing permissions (you'll likely have noticed that in Disk Utility as well) and updating Prebinding. Along with this it clears and trims log files and caches. All these are capable of causing symptoms of the sort you describe.
As a precaution, you should backup all your data if you don't already routinely do so. Aside from the possibility that data could be disturbed by running such utilities (rare, but it happens) the symptoms you describe can also reflect the early onset of hard drive failure!

    Hi JDB38;
There is no such thing as an Intel G5. It is either one or the other but never both. An Intel tower is a Mac Pro. A G5 is a tower with a PowerPC processor in it. So which do you have?

  • Is there any OS X Yosemite System Administration Manual ?

I am looking for a System Administration Manual for Yosemite.
I own both an iMAC and a Macbook Pro Retina.
    Many thanks.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • Can I change the Yosemite system font from Helvetica Neue to Lucida Grand?

I have a hard time seeing the Yosemite font, Helvetica Neue, on my 27 in Apple Thunderbolt Display. This is not a Retina display. Is there a method I can use to change the font to Lucida Grande?

No, but you can make some desktop/folder fonts larger in Finder > View > View Options. Or, in order to make everything larger, go to System Preferences > Displays and change the resolution (take it down a notch) - less crisp, but everything will be a bit larger. If you don't like it, simply revert to the default.

  • Yosemite System Font

Hello. I've recently installed Yosemite on my Macbook Air. The new system font is too small I can barely work on this OS. Is there any way to enlarge the font? Thanks, PH.

I have a 27" iMac, until Yosemite I never had to use the zooming lens, now I have to use it all the time because I can't read the ridiculously small system font. And the worst of all: Apple forces you to use it as it is, you can't increase the size or change font altogether. Yosemite has many nice new features I do like, but this is the worst Apple "update" ever. Helvetica Neue may look nice on a Retina display - if you are working on a 27" screen it's a nightmare. Less is more? Sometimes less is just less. - And the new "transparency look" is just a completely useless gimmick.
I'm working on a Mac since 1988 when I bought my first Mac SE, and every OS since was a big step forward. Until Yosemite came. Steve Jobs credo: 'Form follows function' made Apple great. That seems to be over.
