2 KT4V-L questions

Hi.
I have a KT4V-L and an xp2400+.  I would like to change the multiplier, so I can up the fsb.  I thought KT400 was supposed to allow for multiplier changing on new T-Bred B's.  The multiplier is currently set on auto.  I have tried a few different multiplier settings, each time having to clear the CMOS because the computer wouldn't boot.  I even set the multiplier to 15x, which is the factory set multiplier and it still wouldn't boot.  I might go so far as to take out the cpu and manually unlock it, but the hsf was hard to put on, and I don't want to take it off.
That leads me to the second question.  The hsf I'm using is the Vantec Aeroflow w/ TMD fan.  The bios doesn't detect a cpu fan, I don't know if that is a bios problem or the fan.  Not really important, but just want to find out what's wrong.
Thx for any help,
nismo

no worries,
as far as the CPU goes I believe it is still locked (unless you obtained one that was factory unlocked), and cant be unlocked by the BIOS "yet", however the Tbirds can be unlocked very quickly and with less mess than the Palamino's.  A good guide is here.

not that I would do it lol

  • KT4V (MS6712) questions.

Hi, A few months ago I picked up this mobo cheap and have been happily running an XP2400 cpu along with a 9800pro and 512mb PC2100 RAM but am now thinking of upgrading.
Would I be right in saying that a 3000XP cpu is the fastest this board supports with the latest Bios ?  Also what is the fastest DDR Ram I can use with this board ?
I have downloaded the newest bios (1.9 ?) but have yet to flash it, is it easy ?  Do you have to do it from the floppy drive as I haven't got one ?
    Thanks.

It is possible that running the RAM and CPU at different speeds could be the cause of the errors. It is always best to run CPU & RAM at 1:1 ratio for best stability.
But, with the RAM causing errors at it's rated speed, it generally means the RAM is bad. As you bought it thru Ebay, I would guess someone has overclocked it in the past, thereby damaging it. As long as it runs great at 266, and causes no errors, you could just run it at that speed. However, if you decide to upgrade the CPU to a 333FSB, you could run into the same problem again.
Another option to try, is raising the RAM voltage to 2.6V or 2.7V and try the memtest again. Sometimes increasing the voltage will allow RAM to work better, more so for large sticks of RAM.

  • Upgrading kt4v mobo, some questions

    hi,
recently I bought a Kt4v mobo, but I still use an amd 1.2 ghz duron as processor, therefore my mobo is set to 100fsb atm with is bad  ;(
I'm thinking about upgrading to an AMD athlon but I have some questions.
I'd like to get my FSB at 166, I'm currently using 2 256mb DDR ram sticks with a speed of 333mhz, is that possible?
(well, actualy one is 400mhz, but as this mobo only supports one stick of ddr400, it's set to 333)
what is the fastest Processor my mobo can handle with that kind of ram?
and should I change other speeds when installing it like my AGP bus speed etc.. to prevent them beiing damaged after upping the fsb?
that's all, If someone could answer these I'd be very gratefull, thx
    oh yeah, specs:
    AMD duron 1.2 ghz 200fsb
    KTV4 MSI mobo
Point of view Geforce 4 TI 4280 128mb
    512 MB DDR 333mhz
    Maxtor 80 gig 7200rpm
    samsung 20 gig 5400rpm
    Logitech mx 700 mouse
    wondows XP Pro
    3com nic etc etc etc

    or is it set automatically?
    Yepp!

are Athlon Xp's unlocked by default...should set the multiplier like this then: 12.5 X 166= 2158 mhz
Just let the board handle it, all bios-settings on AUTO.

250 watt which might be on the low side
I think the board wouldn't even boot... :D
Psu should have more then 25A/3.3V, 35A/5V and 200W combined power.

  • KT4V-L & FX 5900 Question.

    Hi all,
I just set my Geforce FX 5900 256MB onto my MSI KT4V-L Mobo and got everything working but what are the best settings for the AGP and the apature size ?
Im not 100% sure there is a option for the AGP in the bios it just sets to what it can handel witch i guess with this card will be 8x
The apature size is 128 would it be better with 256 ?
    Sys Specs
    Windows XP
    Athlon XP 2000+
    1GB DDR 400Mhz Ram
    Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB
    MSI KT4V-L

Well its starting to get anoying, Changes the 128 to 256 and noticed a few changes but sounds chopy in a high spec game and gfx are sorta weird to.
Only things i can think are causing the problem are
    1) via version
    2) that option *algo not showing in gfx menu*

  • Just orderded a KT4V-L - system fan question

Building first PC.  Dowloaded the KT4V-L manual and I can only see two fan sockets - one for heatsink fan and one for a system fan.  I would like to add two system fans (one at the front of the case and one at the back) - is this possible?

Thanks.  Is it just me or this forum really slow when changing page, sometimes even timing out?

  • MSI KT4V-L temp question

I have a MSI KT4V-L board and I want to know if this board reads the temperature from the thermistor that is below the CPU or directly from the CPU's core. I understood that the new AMD XPs (I have a XP 1700+ Thoroughbred) have a built-in sensor and the boards can read the temp from it.
As software, I use Motherboard Monitor, the latest version.
    Thanks

i figure they read from to core.  the same setup as mine (same parts) with a different mobo the temps are about 10-15C lower.

  • Bios update questions for KT4V

Hey, I updated my bios and I have been having trouble getting my mainboard to work properly.  I found out that I had to clear my cmos after updating the bios (I didn't see anything about doing that in the bios setup area).
So I cleared the cmos, and I still have to detach the monitor from the video card for the computer to startup.
Another thing I have a question about is that when I startup the computer, it says that I have a 1250 processor, when I have a 2000+ processor.  I adjusted the fsb speed to 133 (although I could have done something else?), and that "fixed" the problem, but after I turned off the computer it wouldn't turn back on again (four red lights in back, no matter what).  I cleared the cmos again and the computer started up.  Are there any settings I should leave alone? ?(

Okay, I set the fsb speed to 133, and the computer starts up, but only after I detach the video card, turn on the computer, turn off the computer, reattach the video card, and then turn on the computer.
All the lights on the D-bracket stay red, which is supposed to mean that the processor is damaged or not installed properly, but the processor works fine in other mobos, and I'm sure the processor is installed properly.  The lights stay red until I turn off the computer, detach the vid card, turn on the computer, let it boot for a couple seconds, turn off the computer, reattach the vid card, and then turn on the computer, at which point the computer starts up normally.
I have no idea what the problem is.

  • Kt4v w/geforce4 ti 4200

I have a kt4v via kt400 chipset based MSI board that I purchased 2 weeks ago online.  I have had nothing but problems and I believe the problem is with the MB.
With the MB I purchased an AMD 2400+ CPU plus 333Mhz 2700 DDR Ram.  I have a GeForce4 TI 4200 64mb AGP Video card installed.
I first tried installing windows 2000.  During the install I get a Blue Screen stating that ACPI support is not available on this MB and I have to install without ACPI support to continue.  In an attempt to fix it I updated the bios to 1.6.  This caused MANY many lock-ups.  When I backed-off to 1.5 things seemed to work better but what I did notice was that w2k sp 3 made things a whole lot worse (know that I formated my computer about 10 times and re-installed trying the many combinations)
Then I tried Windows XP Prof.  It doesn't, error it just hangs during the text part of the install.  If I disable ACPI support in the bios it installs, but I believe this is a feature that is requried and advertised.  Now that I have XP installed (bios level is still at 1.5 plus ACPI is disabled) I still have problems.  At what appears to be random intervals the screen will goto about 320x200 resolution and then thick white verticle lines within blocks appear all over the screen and eventually the computer is completely locked (sorry, this is hard to explain).
Initially, I would believe this to be a video card problem, BUT here are my reasons for thinking otherwise.  1.  The ACPI problem that still exists makes me think this board is flawed ??  2.  I have owned this card for 6 months and used in my last computer without incident.
Sorry for the long question but I wanted to show that i've tried many different scenarios before resorting to this.

OK, I have run memtest on my computer with no errors.
I found on another thread that I may have a bad video card, but that doesn't explain why I can't install an OS with ACPI enabled.
Is there anyone out there who can help ?
    THANKS SO MUCH IN ADVANCE.

  • Kt4v possible problem with bios 1.8 and hd

Any Idea anyone with this one.
system running well till the other day when hd went very slow even after defrag, install bios 1.8 and reset the bios and adjusting it for my setup. Come to check my harddrive with maxtor powerdiag 3.04 and could not find the drive or any other drives connected. In the bios setup the drive is present. I removed all drives, cdroms, etc except the maxtor main hd and tried again with the same result. After placing in an ata100 controller card in to a spare pci slot and plugged the hd on to it, that the software sees the drive. The test finished and show the HD to be fine.
The question is do I have a problem with the onboard contoller or with the new bios or both.
When I first got this MB I did the same test with the original bios and the hd connected to the MB controller and the software had no problem seeing that and other drive connected.
    my pc
    6712 mb kt4v
    athlon 2700+
    ti4200 graphics card
    2 off ddr333 512Mb memory
    floppy drive
    sony cdrw
    system software windows xp pro
    hard drive maxtor d740x-6l 60Gb ata133

I'll stick with the V1.10, but I'd fell better if MSI showed me they actively update their systems by releasing updated BIOS files from time to time.
I can't sell a 15000$ storage system that doesn't recognise the CPUs installed. The customer would laugh and tell me to come back with a supported system.
Isn't this a VERY valid reason for wanting updates? Even if it only is an updated CPU list?
The only reason I tried this MSI board is that it was the only one available with my retailer at the time I bought it with 3 PCI-X 100Mhz slots. Maybe I should go with a Tyan Thunder next time. Tyan at least show some activity.

I removed Everything execpt 1 hard drive put a old 4 meg PCI video card in and REmounted my HS and CPU and it took me 5 reboots just to get the board to post, after that i set it to the proper 133 FSB and got a NTDRL error changed it back to 100 FSB and it frooze 3 times before finally working After this experence I will Diffently NEVER buy a MSI board this board has been nothing but a headache from the start I will stick by my old faithful ABIT from this day foward..... Anyone wanna buy a slightly used MSI KT4V ??  :D

  • Time for an Upgrade, Question first

I have an older system and want to upgrade the AMD Athalon 2200 to a 2800 Sempron (preferably a 512k cache one =)), but question is I have not flashed the bios in about a year and 4 months or so. The last time I flashed I updated to a version 1.9. Would I need to up the ROM to the current version that MSI Live Monitor shows, 1.0C to put the Sempron in the socket A and have al work well?
And would a nVidia, preferably MSI 6200 or 6600 Video card work well on my KT4V?
Suggestions are welcome, and no I cannot afford a new mainboard and 64 bit cpu  so those two will have to do for now.
    Thanks in advance

Paulie, I would not recommend doing the video card if you are going to upgrade the mainboard.
Why?  The mainboard you currently have is AGP.  The current standard now is PCI-E with AGP being left behind.
That is the reason I recommended the RS480M2 board.
The RS480M2 does support PC2100 and PC2700 ram along with PC3200.

  • KT4V-L...Can't change multiplier

What's up guys, had the board for about a month now, couple of quick questions. I am running and XP 2400+, I can move the FSB and have the system running stable at about 145 FSB. I am also running pc 2700 DDR Ram. For whatever reason, the multiplier seems to not change from 15. Whenever I change it, I have to reset the cmos because the system won't boot. Any ideas?

The MSI KT4V can only unlock multipliers from 6 to 12.5 anything higher than that, you cannot change from the BIOS. The Athlon XP 2400+ CPU itself is locked. You will have to physically modify it in order to change the multiplier higher than 12.5
If you really want to change your multiplier, then visit this site: http://www.ocinside.de/go_e.html?/html/workshop/socketa/tbred_painting.html
