Advice on Airport Extreme with both Mac and PC network and usb drive

I have my airport extreme connected via ethernet to my two windows xps and wirelessly to my macbook pro and apple tv.
I want to store my media (music, videos, etc) on an external hardrive accessible to all devices.
Should I format my 1tb external harddrive as HFS+ or FAT32? I understand I will have to do the formatting using OSX Drive Utility since XP can not format more than 32 gigs in the FAT 32 format.
Suggestions?

Do you have to format as fat32 if the external hard drive is connected directly to the Airport Extreme and you want to access the disc from both Windows and Mac computers?

I am getting a "connection timeout" message when trying to access my Airport Extreme with various laptops, Play Station 3 and Wii. My Airport Extreme is about a month old; it was working fine until about a week ago. Suddenly, the "timeout" is not allowing me to connect to my wireless network.

It could be that there's a new source of interference.

  • Can I use the airport extreme with my Mac OS X?

Can I use the Airport Extreme with a Mac OS X  10.5?

Yes. In addition to administer the latest version of the AirPorts, you would need AirPort Utility 5.5.3, which requires OS X 10.5.7 or later.

  • Printing from Airport Extreme for both Mac and PC

I have both a mac and a PC. Both are connected to the internet using the Airport Extreme. Here's my problem. Currently I can only print from the Mac but not the PC. I was told that I would be using the airport extreme I would be able to use one printer for both computers. The printer I am using is an HP Office Jet 6310, which is compatible with both a Mac and a PC. Can anyone help me?

I recently purchased a Canon Pixma MP610 and it is connected to an AE. My Macbook prints fine to it. My PC laptop doesn't. I used to have a Canon Pixma 1600 that printed fine for both computers (I used iFelix's 1004.html steps to install for the PC)
I have tried the Add Printer on the PC using the same 1004.html steps with no luck. I have also used the 1008.html steps to install using the Bonjour Wizard with no luck.
When I say no luck, I mean it sees the printer, it has the proper drivers, but when I print a test page, it can't connect.
I Add a Printer and test and it fails, I then delete the printer and install it a different way. The weird thing is hours later, the test page will be there sitting on my printer. But I don't know why it took so long or which printer install method worked.
I have now installed 4-5 different printers and hit Test Page on all of them. I named each printer something different so in case the Test page comes out, I'll know which printer works.
I'm almost there I feel, but just can't get it.
Any suggestions iFelix or anyone else?

Hi....I have just bought a netbook and my wireless connection that I use at home is via an airport express that works brilliantly on my 2 macs however with the new netbook the connection is intermittent even though it always says its connected to my wireless network.
I am completely hopeless with pc's and just needed a netbook for occasional use but wish I new why sometimes the internet works on it on the airport network and othertimes it doesnt. I have removed all firewalls and still have the same problem.
Anyone know a solution or what may be happening as I am at a loss as to why it intermittenty works even though it always says the connection is excellent.

  • Networking an Airport Extreme with both a PC and a Macbook

I have been trying to connect an Airport Extreme to PC through Ethernet as well as trying to connect a Macbook wirelessly through the same system. My DSL provider is Earthlink. THe PC is a HP Pavillion 764N model. What do I need to do?

How is the base station connected to the DSL modem? The Ethernet (not USB) output of the DSL modem must be connected to the AEBS's WAN port.
The AEBS must be configured with the parameters needed to connect to your DSL ISP. For example PPPoE, or DHCP, or static/manual IP address, etc.
If the ISP requires PPPoE, the AEBS must be configured to connect via PPPoE. Also your computers must be configured to NOT use PPPoE since the AEBS will be handling it.

  • Sync with both Mac os 10.4 AND Windows XP at the same time?

After much research AND much frustration with my Moto Q... I have decided on a Palm Centro (the prodical is returning home --- i used to use Palm all the time)
Here is my one question... I use Outlook on my computer at work (XP - office suite) and I can use Palm Desktop (or iCal) on my Mac at home (10.4)
Is it possible to setup the palm to sync with outlook at work and either iCal or Palm Desktop at home so that the same calendar, tasks, contacts, are on work comp, home comp and Centro at the same time? will i make something blow up? I am just trying to get prepped for when I am able to get the centro (8 days and counting).
If nothing else... I haven't been syncing to the Mac at home with the Moto Q and so I am really not 'out' anything... just wanted to know if it could be done?
    anyone out there doing this?
    Post relates to: Centro (Verizon)

yeah... i was thinking Cabled sync. I just want to be able to make changes at work on outlook, sync them with my centro, take my centro home, and sync it with my mac (using palm desktop OR iCal -- suggestions?!) and have the information the same in both places!
I am wondering if the centro, unlike my iPod, will allow me to sync in two places (not at the same time) and possibly even with different software (outlook and palm)
    Thanks!

  • Airport Extreme & Express both wired, but one network?

Ok, I looked to see if this was answered but I wasn't very sure what to search for. If this has been answered please point me in the right direction.
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station that broadcasts my wireless network and is the router for my wired network throughout my house. My den is on the very edge of the AEBS wireless network but the wired network is in this room. Instead of having the Express extend my wireless network wirelessly, could I instead use my wired network from my AEBS directly to the Express? Then have the Express broadcast the same wireless network?
    Essentially instead of;
    Cable Modem >---(Wired)---->AEBS>~~~~(MyWiFi)~~~~>Express>~~~~(MyWiFi)~~~~
    Could I have;
    Cable Modem >---(Wired)---->AEBS>---(Wired)---->Express>~~~~(MyWiFi)~~~~
I still want both the AEBS and the Express sharing my one WiFi network, I just don't want the express to "piggy-back" to do it.
Please let me know what I can do to set this up, or if this has been answered before, point me in the right direction.
    Thank You very much.

Rachard1, Welcome to the discussion area!
    Yes that is possible.
Configure the AirPort Express (AX) to create a wireless network. Configure it to use the same network name (SSID) and encryption type/level/password as the AEBS.
Configure the AX to use a different channel than the AEBS to reduce interference between the two.
Configure the AX to operate as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address, DHCP server disabled).

  • Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card question

Does anybody know what Apple charges for the Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR card and the install. I've tried to find out at my local Apple store and was told I'd have to make an appt. at the Genius Bar and they are booked solid today. This is going in my PowerMac G5 duel so I can run Apple TV with the Airport Extreme.

    Thanks! for the quick response!
I'm hoping Apple will coming up with a cheaper option though.
With everything I need to get Apple TV to work, my best estimate on cost is around $600. Yikes.

  • I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network

I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network and I had to change all my ip addresses.  I managed to catch on to the apple replacement range and reset all my printers' addresses manually.  Was there an easier way to handle this?  Also, I lost the connection to my WD Worldbook drive though and haven't been able to come up with a work around.  Any ideas would help, thanks!

First, to answer your question about the WD drive - I could not find it with an ethernet connection.  I tried connecting to the usb port on the Extreme, but it was not visible there either.
When connecting an external network drive to the AirPort Extreme by Ethernet, the drive would be providing the file sharing service. This would be typical of a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. If your WD Worldbook offers NAS services then it should be found by network clients per WD's instructions.
When connected to the Extreme's USB port, the Extreme would take over the file server services. However, the drive must not be formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT as either are not recognizable by the Extreme for sharing out. My guess is this is the case and why the AirPort Utility cannot "find" the drive.
If your WD Worldbook has an Ethernet interface that is the one you should use for best performance. It is still possible that this drive is using an IP address that is not in the default range of the Extreme.
How can I reset the IP range on the router.  I have to use the iPad app to manage the router and I didn't see any way to change the range.  Did I miss something or would I need to use an Mac computer to get more options?
You can change the IP address range of your AirPort using the AirPort Utility on your iPad.
    To change the range:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
    Select Advanced.
    Select DHCP Range.
    Select 192.168

I'm not sure how to post a message. I hope this might interest someone. The situation; 3 floors,I am having trouble with an an Airport Extreme, 802.11n on the top floor and a Mac Pro 3.1 on the bottom floor. Not always but often it has trouble seeing the Airport and making a connection. I have an older Airport Express, would it help to install it? would it work best if it was installed in the same room? should it be installed half way in between? Get another Extreme? The Mac Book Pro on the middle floor can see 11 networks in the neighbourhood if that might be causing a problem or would if I installed the Express. Thank for your consideration.

Thanks for your time ... I appologize for the font and colour, I compossed the question in pages and failed to notice the font colour as grey ... there are a variety of computers of various ages so I think it is using a setting that allows both 5G and 2.4 ... the connection to the Airport is thru a cable modem and cable does run throuhout the house ... maybe those hard wires would be a place to look at ... do you think that putting the 'Express' on the second floor might help ... thanks again ...

  • Using an airport extreme in both bridged mode and guest network with DHCP

I currently use a third-generation airport extreme in bridge mode to connect my various Mac servers To the Internet. I'm using bridge mode on the AirPort Extreme because I have up to five static IP address (only using three now) I am currently not using the wireless network, and none of the servers are serving DHCP. I am looking at the Newer airport extreme with guest network Wi-Fi. My question is, does the new airport extreme base station support bridge- mode for any devices and host DHCP for the guest network connecting wirelessly to the base station?

The AirPort Extreme cannot be in Bridge Mode and support a Guest Network.
The AirPort must be configured to provide DHCP and NAT services if you want to enable the Guest Network function.
If you really do have a 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme, it will support the Guest Network feature if you connect the AirPort directly to a simple modem.....not a modem/router or gateway type of devices.......and configure the AirPort to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.

  • How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • How to replace a older Airport Extreme with a newer model? (OS 10.6 w/ Mac Mimi)

How do I replace a older Airport Extreme with a newer model? (Mac Mini OS 10.6.8 )

There is not much more to it than to buy a new one, and configure it using AirPort Utility.
You should be using AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
Power down your modem before removing your older Extreme and connecting the new one.
