Arch64 on my laptop

I know this has been asked a million times else probably, but for a while now I've be considering trying Arch64. My laptop has one of the newer mobile sempron single cores that support x86_64. Some others have said that using it on the same laptop I have has improved compiz-fusion and some other programs, but they've been using the ubuntu 64bit. Is it really worth it? or are they just exaggerating? Most of the the posts I've seen on here say there is really no reason to change. Also, does catalyst work with x86_64?

On the 32bit vs 64bit question:

There are many more, I just got tired of cut and pasting...
As for your specific question about catalyst: I don't use ATI, but here is the link to the catalyst package from the x86_64 repo: ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/extra/os/x86_64 … pkg.tar.gz

  • Some packages really need documentation to be usable?

I have installed arch64 on my laptop yesterday and I have found that I like it really much. Anyway, I realized that I will have to do some work to download all the docs I need to use my computer as I usually use it (I usually play with -dev packages, like gtk(mm) and wxwidgets, and with math programs, like maxima). I will also have to download docs on how to configure my nvidia card to use twinview, even if I actually have no plan to use it. So, because I like arch and I want to give some ideas back, why not do a poll to see how many users are satisfied by arch's current policy (basically, rm -rf /usr/share/doc) and how many would like something different? Something different would be -doc packages for packages with huge documentation (for example gtk) and integrated READMEs for package with little documentation (for example the NVIDIA driver docs). Well.. lets see what people think about that..

This is a bad example, IMHO, since as phrakture said, you get more up-to-date API documentation online. I would never dream of using offline-documentation when I'm coding, I always keep a web-browser open to the page containing stuff I need. Well I used to when I didn't know it all by heart anyway. It must be time to learn something new.
another example is using a non-trivial app, like maxima.
    or online: http://maxima.sourceforge.net/docs/manu … ima_1.html
I haven't used this one, never heard of it. When I was playing with Blender (perhaps the most non-trivial app!!), I recall downloading one tutorial, but again, I mostly read everything online. I just bookmarked it. My web browser is never closed that way.
    "info" format, like grub.
    or online: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html
Your point about this being package-dependent is valid, but I'd  say that it will be hard to find a package in this day and age that doesn't post its docs online. And if it doesn't, I say that package is broken.
When I was on dialup, I loved the fact Arch didn't install docs for me, cause it saved on my downloading. The one document I couldn't live without back then was the Java 1.5 API... and it was a pain to get online. In that case, I did download the whole thing and store it offline, but for everything else, google gave me the docs I needed. Now that I have a super-fast always on connection, google gives me the docs I need completely painlessly. I've personally never missed offline documentation, and I appreciate my hard drive being clear.
That being said, there's nothing stopping a group of people from creating some documentation packages and either putting PKGBUILDs in AUR or creating their own repository. I just have to say it is in direct conflict with Arch's philosophy to include docs with the packaging. It was a fundamental part of Judd's initial design decision with the 0.1 release and before.

  • New install, config files empty?

I just installed arch64 on my laptop and went to configure the system and all the configuration files are empty.
Is this a sign that my laptop is unable to run arch or a sign I just have a bad burn?  Im currently downloading a new cd now

Rebooting and re-running setup from the same CD worked when it happened to me... And well, we know it's a bad install cause all the config is missing
    well, you got it

  • Dual monitor (w/laptop): external monitor is blank.

Hi! just installed arch for the first time a day ago. Right now what I'm working on is on getting my second monitor running (mostly for development purposes... and movies ^__^).
I'm using Arch64 with the open ATI driver and KDE. Whenever I connect the external monitor, the monitor seems to detect a connection occurred (the "check video cable" message disappears when I connect it and comes back when I disconnect it), and so does KDE. When I open my display settings, it tells me a new monitor was connected and asks me if I want to configure it.
Then I choose to configure and use the two monitors giving the following screens (right now I'm at college testing with monitors in there, thus the low resolution, but behavior seems to be exactly the same):
(EDIT: resized. In case of wishing to read full images, just take the "resized/" out of the URI)
However pretty the full screenshot looks like (... I just mean that even if it looks like the second monitor is working), the monitor remains blank.
Using arandr (xrandr's gui), it is exactly the same result. I might be doing something wrong (almost certainly I am ) (EDIT: decided it was a good idea to show what I did with xrandr).
In /home/<myuser>/.xinitrc my file looks like this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1440x900 --pos 1600x0 --rotate normal --output LVDS --mode 1600x900 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --output HDMI-0 --off
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    exec ck-launch-session startkde
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
The laptop's model is Toshiba Satellite L775d. I'm not sure what other information should be required in this situation, but I will be loving to give anything that isn't compromising
    Thank you!
(PS: so far Arch has treated me nicely let's see for how long)

I wondered the same. I initially only used KDE for it (that's how it worked in other distros, but I'm guessing Fedora and Kubuntu have way more stuff on top). I moved to xrandr later after searching for options and I did select "Ignore" when KDE asked me to configure and just went ahead with xrandr. The same still happens.
Thanks, I hope I gave the right information.
EDIT: Adding some extra information. I tried rebooting with the CRT cable connected. When the kernel initiated its loading, the messages only appeared on the external monitor. It was afterwards (it was pretty quick, but I will assume it was when radeon's modeset hit) that the external monitor went blank again and, in that situation, the laptop's monitor went blank (so none of the two monitors worked... and I was so hopeful!)

  • Suspend to ram stopped working with Acer Aspire 5930G - Arch64

Suspend to ram recently stopped working on my laptop running Arch64. When ever I press the suspend to ram button in kde4 simply nothing happens, no screen flashing or error messages of any kind. I tried to install the pm-utils package and run pm-suspend, but with the same result. The program just ran and nothing happened and no feedback, not even in dmesg.

    search the forums: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=556030
in the future, i would definately use yaourt to upgrade since it displays better what is being updated and from where.
edit: if pm-suspend fails, check its log (/var/log/pm-suspend.log)

  • Wlan rtl8191se causes freeze on arch64

    Hello,
i've got a new Toshiba L505-10j with realtek rtl8192se wlanadapter. There is no Linux-support for this one, so I had to install them by myself... I found drivers from realtek in a forum. They where on the official site only for a couple of days. I installed them with "make install". The interface was found after a reboot. After using Wlan-Connection a few seconds my system freezes. I tried networkmanager and wicd with the same effect.
I tried the same with GNU/Linux Mint(also x86_64) and I coud use my network without problems, so it should be a problem of arch/arch64.
I've also tried ndiswrapper, but it only works with 32bit.

  • [solved] Missing 1G Memory, arch64. How to find back?

    It was a bios issue.
After flashing the bios to 1.1o, free -m reports satisfactory 3879m memory
the acer flashtool supports Vista and Dos.
It seems a piece of common knowledge that Arch64 supports 4G + memory, and I have no doubt of that.
But I still have 1G memory missing after switching to Arch64.
Probably reserved for the video, which shares up to 1G mem?
The laptop is an acer aspire 5735, with 4G mem, and intel 4500MHD
Someone could do diagnosis for the machine?
I've spent some time searching  without getting solid answers.
    Many thanks

  • LF alternatives to Arch for my laptop

Some months ago I've bought a new laptop for college use ( I'm studying computer engineering ).
And I've setup, w/o many problems, arch64 + awesomeWM and everything was working properly.
Even if I'm not really concerned about battery duration (we've plenty of wall plugs under our desks in any rooms we use ), I had installed and configured laptop-mode module and adjusted brightness not too use too much power (and not to burn my eyes aswell, since full brightness is rly too much ).
But honestly I've noticed that battery under win7 lasts almost 2 times with respect to arch and my hdd is not having that many spindowns that are pretty frequent under arch, even when I'm just typing in vim and my wifi connection is not shutting down suddendly (ok I know that I could adjust those parameters ) .
So the point is: is there any distro supporting more efficient and user-friendly/fast access power management for laptops in supported repositories, maybe other laptops features and possibly very close to arch? (I've a pretty new laptop, this may be the problem )
I'm running Ubuntu on my desktop but I'd like to run something more 'interesting' on my laptop without load of useless stuff on it and that allows me to make choices about WM and other programs.
    Thanks in advance

You might be afflicted by the power regression bug that lurks somewhere in the Linux kernel. I don't follow kernel development that closely, but according to Phoronix this is still an issue even with the latest kernel 3.1.
    http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … ress&num=1
Now, as for distros, I don't think that distro devs can conjure up anything that could reduce power consumption significantly in the userland. Secondly, I'm afraid that battery life time is such an important marketing feature when it comes to laptops that companies might want to protect/hide whatever software schemes they have, making it difficult for Linux to come par.
As a chemistry student I'm putting all my hopes on the development of more powerful batteries. :-P
EDIT: I'd like to also point out that while Archers are the first to get all the cool new kernel features, they are also going to be the first to feel the pain of kernel bugs. Does installing Debian (that I don't fancy that much myself) make a difference for you in terms of battery life?

  • Can't mount NFS from my Arch laptop, am I missing something obvious?

    Hello,
I have been trying to solve this issue for over a week and tried everything that I can imagine with no luck...
    Set up:
    - Qnap SS-839 Pro with several NFS shares on
    /share/to_sort
    /share/movies
    /share/music
    etc.
    - MythTV frontend/backend running Mythbuntu.
I can mount my NFS shares without problem. I use this fstab.
    192.168.1.100:/share/Music /var/lib/mythtv/music nfs nolock,async,proto=tcp,rw,ac 0 0
    192.168.1.100:/share/Videos /var/lib/mythtv/videos nfs nolock,async,proto=tcp,rw,ac 0 0
    - Arch laptop
I can't get to mount any of the NFS share:
    [18:59:14][[email protected]]
    /mnt/aether Arch64# /etc/rc.d/rpcbind restart

    /mnt/aether Arch64# mount 192.168.1.100:/share/to_sort/ to_sort/ -o no-lock
mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified
I tried using the 2 following lines in my fstab on  my laptop but nothing works:
    1) 192.168.1.100:/share/to_sort /mnt/aether/to_sort nfs nolock,async,proto=tcp,rw,ac 0 0  (same option than under mythbuntu)
    2) 192.168.1.100:/share/to_sort /mnt/aether/to_sort nfs defaults 0 0
I'm no guru when it comes to nfs sharing etc, but I really can't see what I am missing here, nor whatelse can I try!
Any idea will be more than welcome!
    Thanks in advance
    Ludo

    ~ Arch64$
As you can see, it is now working and I am now completely puzzled...
How come reinstalling this package solved the issue?
Any idea on what the problem was would be more than welcome
    Thanks

  • Matlab install on arch64 failing

    Hello all, my first post.
Had arch64 up and running on my laptop for about a day now, everything gone pretty smoothly so far, but now i need to install matlab and i'm having problems. Error below:
/mnt/iso1/install: line 713: /lib64/libc.so.6: No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `/mnt/iso1/update/bin/glnxa64/*': No such file or directory
    Error writing to /tmp/3496tmwinstall
The installer is unable to copy files to /tmp.
Make sure that /tmp exists, is writable, and has
at least 5 megabytes of available space.
Matlab uses it's own built in install script and it has always gone straight on. I've checked the /tmp dir and it's set to read/write - i'm installing as SU anyway - and it certainly has more than 5mb space. I must admit that this is the first time i have attmepted to install onto a 64bit computer, but the error thrown up seems trivial and not related to that. Also,
Anyway, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm not too experienced so go easy on me.
    Thanks a lot, pete.

Oh poop, I seem to have found the problem. The iso doesn't contain the files for the 64bit version "glnxa64".
    Must get back onto mathworks.
    Pete.

  • Arch64, still only 3 GB RAM

I own a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo PI 3540 (which has 4 GB RAM installed). I have Arch64, but the memory available is only 3 GB.
    $ free -mt

    Total: 3012 252 2759
Someone told me that, it's because the graphic card has shared memory and it uses the 1 GB of RAM. But a few months ago, I installed ubuntu with the ubuntu-server kernel (with PAE enabled) and then I had the 4 GB of RAM.
    Can someone help me?

After some research (http://forum.ts.fujitsu.com/forum/viewt … 90&t=39045), I found that Fujitsu Siemens support claims that:
FujitsuSiemens laptops aren't meant to run 64 bit operating systems
    Can you believe that?
Anyway I managed to get all the RAM, booting with the parameter
    acpi=off
But this disables all power saving and the ability to access thermal data, battery information. And that's not the worst thing, now my system it's rebooting randomly.
Then I found that my Realtek LAN card it's the culprit, because it's using Power Management version 7, which apparently is not supported by the kernel. http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-977074.html

  • Kernel 2.6.27 update, laptop display brightness problem.

After the update to kernel 2.6.27 the display brightness resets to the highest level during the system startup. It resets to highest value somewhere during the udev processing. There is obviously some difference with display brightness handling because now I have in GNOME display of brightness level while changing (something like volume changing with multimedia keys). The brightness also resets to highest randomly while working in GNOME so I need to adjust it sveral times.
My laptop is HP nx7400. I have Arch64 installed. Also the problem appears on my brother's HP nx7300, almost same hardware.

    Hi peart.
I am not kernel programmer, but I have analyzed the code of the ACPI video driver and the problematic patch. I have removed the check which sets the brightness to max but I can't compile because of not enough space to compile the kernel :S. Would you be so kind to compile the modified file and upload a compiled moduel to test.
I have following explanation for my modification:
Here http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … 29c1ba8055 we can see that there is added check if ACPI BQC object exists. If the object doesn't exist then the brightness is set to max, which obviously is the problem with our laptops because the BQC object is optional. If we revert the patch completly the BCQ check is moved to the outter if-structure and the execution skips whole part, where the backlight device is registered.
My modification is that I removed the check for BCQ object and removed the part where it sets the backlight to max. As far as I can see acpi_video_get_brightness(device->backlight) can be called without prior checking of BCQ object existance, because acpi_video_get_brightness then calls acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current which gets the current brightness level. acpi_video_device_lcd_get_level_current checks if BCQ object exists and handles it properly, as far as I can see.

  • Weird ALSA Error on Laptop: "No state is present for card pcsp"

As you can see in the above image, I get this odd error when I boot up my laptop. I do not have this issue on my desktop which is also running Arch64. Anyone have any ideas? The laptop is a Compaq Presario F767NR.

Alsa is trying, and failing, to initialise your pc speaker. Blacklisting the snd_pcsp module will fix it.

  • Move installation from one laptop to another

My laptop is broken and I want to move my archlinux system to my macbook pro, the installation is available via rsync on a separate USB harddrive.
Normally I just copy everything on the new machine and that's it, but now I'm having problems. The Macbook is a 64 bit system so I guess I need to install Arch64 for that. But the old system is a 32 bit one.
Is there a way to install the 64bit version on the macbook and install all the packages I had on the old computer?
Maybe I can rsync everything on the macbook, change the mirrors to x86_64 and just refetch everything? Will this work? I don't want to install everything from scratch again. Any tips how to get my system onto the 64 architecture?

Woohoo this works just fine! Since Mac is a UNIX underneath, the Macbook seems to be the perfect laptop for Linux as well. I just activated the power controls in KDE and it now suspends perfectly when closing the lid.
Never worked for me with my other laptop. And I don't even need to use special daemons for that, it works just fine with ACPI. Cool.
If lid is closed while amarok is playing, it pauses and will continue when opening the lid again. And even the WLAN still works after that.
This is just as easy as in MacOS.
So I guess MacOS will not be started again... :-) I always liked Linux / KDE better than Mac Software.
    Yippee!

  • Success story with Compaq CQ40 laptop (full A/V support)?

    Hi all!
Anyone got success story with the HP/compaq CQ40 (-304AX) laptop or the individual components?
Here is the spec of my laptop:
    - CPU: AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 2100MHz (dual-core)
    - RAM: 3GB (DDR2-800)
    - Video: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 / 256MB RAM
    - Audio: IDT 92HD71B7 @ ATI SB700
    - HD: SATA-2 / SAMSUNG HM500JI / 500GB
    - CD: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633A SATA DVD-RW
And the followings are what I need:
    1.External HDMI output
2.Full 3D acceleration i.e. same performance as on windows (I know nvidia cards can.....)
3.GPU-accelerated h.x264/blu-ray playing (utilizing ATI UVD)
    4.Sound output
    5.DVD writing
    6.Running skype, oracle 10gand wine/games
I tried arch x64 two weeks ago, and got frustrated with various weird problems (not all are hw-related)
Here are my own experiences last week:
    (1,2,3) Video driver problems: (UNRESOLVED)
    * ati-radeon fails on HDMI - after x ends, it would return to console with main monitor off (though I can still type blindly to enter x again)
    * catalyst driver 10.2 with xorg 10.4 can't close laptop screen
    * ati-radeonhd works with HDMI output but no 3d accel and 2d accel appears very slow (for switching chrome tabs - which should be instant)
    (4) Audio driver problems: (RESOLVED FINALLY)
    * ALSA: volume too small, no hardware mixing.... i hate dmix
    * OSS: works perfect after changing the output channels(?) and re-attach vmix
    (5) DVD writing: untested.... anyone got it working?
    (6) no official skype for 64-bit , oracle 10g x64 not installing (missing 32-bit libs), wine: direct3d failed immediately with catalyst driver (but native 3d games did work)
BTW should I just install 32-bit arch? Is there improvement I can get by installing 64-bit version?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60-211DX, exact look as yours, but completely different under the hood. (32-bit, 2GB ram, intel graphics, everything works well).
Anyway, answering your question about Arch 32 bit vs Arch 64 bit, you should use Arch64 if you plan to use more than 3GB of ram.
