Are monthly service charges (call, text, data) billed in advance or in arrears?

Every instance I find regarding this matter on the website it says it's in advance.  But when I called about my bill, the lady on the phone said my bill that's due is from the previous month.  So which is it?  If it's billed in advance I just paid a bill that I should not have needed to pay as my account was cancelled over a week before that month's billing cycle even started. If I already paid this amount and should not have had to, what should I do? Edit:To clarify, the due date for my bill (which I assumed was in advance) was on June 26 but I cancelled my account on June 16. If it's in advance I paid a bill for service from June 26 - July 26 for an account that was cancelled over a week before that cycle started; basically paying for nothing.

It is billed in arrears but not by a complete month. For example, my billing cycle runs form the 24th to the 23d. So my currently bill cycle of June 24 - July 23 was billed on June 29th and the due date for that bill is July 14th. So when I pay in a few days, I am paying for the current service month, not the next service month. The same should be true for you. Your last bill was for May 26 - June 26, not for June 26 - July 26. Anyway, just look at the bill details. It will show you the dates for what it is covering.
To clarify: it is billed in advance by a full month. 
You were billed on June 24 (even though you probably couldn't see your bill). The bill is for service from June 24 through July 23, which is a full month. Your payment date/due date are unrelated to how you are billed.

    Non-basic charges are usually things like Voice Mail and long distance calling. The first bill is always a stinger. You pay a full month in advance and a partial month, from the date of installation until your new bill date. So your first bill can be anywhere from 1-2 months of service. After the first bill you are on a 30-day billing. You can see your bill detail by signing in online and clicking on My Bill and then on "Print and Download" towards upper right of that page and being sure you select the Entire Bill. The bills are confusing because by law the services are taxed differently for basic  and non-basic so the bills have to be broken down into those services and each taxed accordingly. Our government wants their share...too much as usual, but we all know how the government is...

    If we go to India and want to only use wifi to call with skype or similar service, can we we turn of incoming/outgoing calls & texts, as well as data on our Verizon Samsung Galaxy s5? 
    If we can, please advise simple and complete directions to turn off calls, texts, and data services while roaming  so we will not be charged for any services while still being able to use wifi, and how to reverse  that when we return to the us.

    I returned a new iphone that never worked. It's showing up on my bill as a monthly payment plan. I can't get anyone via chat or phone. I tried numerous times to resolve the issue before returning the phone. They told me it needed a special card and they would send it and I could install it. The phone was over $450. I don't have hours to wait on the phone, then speak to people who ask: did you try turning the phone off and then back on?
    The last time I had a 30 minute useless conversation with an operator, my child got a black eye from a swing because I wasn't able to get to her fast enough.
    I ended up with the new phone in the first place because my local store told me that my less than one year old iphone did not have a warranty. I later found out they lied. The battery was not charging and no one wanted to help me with the issue.

    Where did you purchase it from?  There are lots of iPhones sold as "unlocked" which are carrier locked phones that were hacked and are not officially unlocked.  These phones are subject to re-locking to the original carrier, particularly when updated.

    Dear Verizon Wireless Executives,
    I am writing to let you know that I (and many of my neighbors) are on the verge of switching to ATT, due to terrible reception in my home neighborhood. 
    I moved to Dominican neighborhood in San Rafael in March 2014, where I bought a house. I discovered that Verizon cell service varies from non-existent to terrible, both for data and cell service. At best I might get 1x data, and 0 or 1 bar for cell. All calls are dropped within 15 seconds. Data typically does not work.
    My response was to first purchase and install a network extender. However, due to the size and configuration of my home,  I discovered that I needed a second extender to cover the whole house. This has led to new problems—the two extenders “compete” and if I start a call in one part of the house and move 1 or 2 feet too far in the other direction, I lose the call.
    ATT has a powerful cell tower on the ridge above my neighborhood, which consistently produces 5 bars. It sits on a ridge in the Marin Open Space, likely on an old Nike base radio tower. (there are numerous towers on this ridge as a result of the abandoned Nike missle site).
    I have begun to organize in my neighborhood—Dominican/Black Canyon Home Owners Asssociation, with about 1200 homes. When I posted a message asking about other people’s experience with Verizon Wireless, I was inundated with at least 30 or 40 angry and frustrated messages from Verizon customers, on NextDoor, a neighborhood listserve.
    Today I completed a long Verizon Wireless “trouble ticket”, number NRB000007366782. I was told that there have been many, many complaints from this neighborhood for both data and cell coverage, or more to the point, lack of coverage. Your records indicate that this neighborhood is considered within Verizon as a “1X marginalization area”. And yet ,  currently there is no plan at Verizon to remedy this situation.
    I strongly encourage you to begin an immediate search for access to one of the many existing towers on the ridge above my house to place a Verizon cell station.
    In the event that you choose to continue to ignore this neighborhood and it’s abysmal coverage, I will organize a mass defection of Verizon Wireless residents to switch to ATT. I encourage you to begin this process now, let me and the neighborhood know of your plans, and have it completed in six months. If we have  not heard from you within 1 month (November 21, 2014), we will switch to ATT en masse beginning in December.

    That is not going to happen due to a myriad of reasons.
    1- Verizon listed the area correctly. So its not deceiving the customers. So based on that I would have left for a better provider.
    2- Verizon cannot just pop out and place service on any tower or property. They must gain permission to place signal towers in locations. They must secure the approval of villages, towns, cities or counties to even think of putting service towers up. This can take years.
    Then if the approval is opposed and no other sites can be obtained your service stays as it is. This is not a carrier fault. Go after the town boards and elected officials that will not allow their placement.
    And blame the majority of people who also oppose these towers etc. Based on scares of cancer, birth defects, and even people having seizures. Yep read up on it.
    Your speaking for your neighbors is admirable but futile. You cannot get what you want in 6x6 months.

I can't  believe that the monthly CT tax is higher than the payment for the phone itself. Does this make sense. Last time I spoke with them on the phone it was for 1 1/4 hours for something simple. I don't want to call unless I need to. The salesman told me nothing about any of this. Thank you for any help you can offer.

    The bill from last month states:
    CT state sales tax**     $38.10
    ** In some states sales tax or surcharges are calculated on the full cost of the full retail price or VZW cost of the device you purchased and not on the discounted price you pay. The sales tax or surcharges charged on your device was based on $599.99 and appears on this first bill.
    The current bill says the same.
    Actually, now I'm realizing that last month's bill stated I was making the first payment toward the phone. Now this month also says it's the first payment toward the phone when it's really the second.

    I feel like Comcast is a complete ripoff now - and I have been a loyal customer for more than 15 years! I was totally bamboozled by Comcast after I paid my bill and then opened up my "new bill" and saw that my last month's e'bill has been changed after I paid it in full  - all my services have been changed and now are being charged more - and a service charge of $70 for a phone problem which was totally their equipment problem and they had previously removed from the bill has now been added back in!! Now the new bill was added in - my "free HBO for 6 months for previous problems" - was removed and I'm now being billed for it - all of my services are being charged more - and my service - which was supposed to be $89. for two years - and I had agreed to - is now $161. - WHAT A RIP-OFF!!! Of course, I can't reach anyone by telephone now as the phone service has changed and I'll have to wait until tomorrow and try some other numbers. I have now switched back to Paper billing and may cut off the phone as this is a total crazy way to operate a business!!! I wish they would just be honest with me after helping me and thanking me for my business and telling me what my bill would be for two years and saying that my bill was paid in FULL!!!

    Thanks - I did get a private message that they've taken off the service charge and taken off some of the other charges that had been put on after the fact on the last bill and on this month's bill but then when I log in to look at the bill - it is still more than it is supposed to be as it say it will one to 2 billing cycles for that to take effect.I can't even SEE my own bill ONLINE!  I now have to put in a "pin" number to view it and I'm locked out of my own account as there is no place to enter the PIN number and I don't have a record of ever creating a PIN number when I created my account 15 years ago!!  -  So I wil be emailing that back to the person who emailed me as well as to the ecare@ comcast.com

    Did you check the security software on your computer?

    You can also go back to the Apple Store and let them activate the phone.

  • Why do I have to pay for a charge that I should not of been charged then wait for the credit in two to three billing cycles? If I don't pay it I get charged $5 a month late charge?

    So I spent a considerable amount of time on the phone with Verizon about charges on my wireless bill. The conclusion of it was: Pay the charge and we will credit the charge or it will show as a balance due with a $5.00 late fee every month. I got two phones on a promotion in November. Part of the promotion was no activation fee. Got my first bill and a $70.00 activation fee was on it. On line chatted with Verizon and they said it would be credited in two to three billing cycles. I paid my bill minus the activation fee. This month I have a $5.00 late fee and a $35.00 restocking fee because they messed up and sent three phones and I returned one. It was not activated. They might credit me that money back. What is going on?????

        I am so very sorry for any aggravation you've experienced getting your billing straightened out, Nunu1957. It's true that it can take 1 to 2 billing cycles for some account balance adjustments to appear on a statement. While I know you'd rather not have paid your activation fees, the terms of your agreement do require you to do so in order to avoid late fees or even involuntary service interruptions.
    I am concerns about the restock fee. If the device was sent to you in error, you should not have been billed a restock fee. You stated that there may be a refund for the fee. Has that been confirmed?

    This is a common concern among Android and I-phone user, and one of the drawbacks to using a smart phone.  We lose so much privacy. Our phones become cameras into our homes for us to be spied on.
    I don't know what type of phone you have, if it is even a smart phone, but here is an example of an application that you can use to determine which applications are accessing your information and sending it out.

    Thanks for sharing your use case.  I have a few questions if you don't mind:
    1) What file formats are typically found within these compressed containers?  For example, html, xml, txt, pdf, MS Office, etc.
    2) Do these compressed containers ever have other embedded compressed containers within them?  For example, a zip file containing other zip files within it.
    3) If the intention is to process document files, do any of the document files have other document formats embedded/nested within them?  For example, a MS Word document with a spreadsheet embedded within it.
