Big reports!!

Hi all,
I want to publish one report that generates lots of rows (it has about 15 columns). And I also want it to be exported to Excel. The problem is when the report has a lot of rows, it doesn't work:
- Is there any configuration file to limit the maximum size of a report in Publisher??
- What can I do??
Thanks in advance,

At which point is this failing.
I am going to assume that it is failing at the point that you try to add the report data to the word template. The following response assumes this is the case.
First make sure that you have the latest publisher report add on for Word. This may solve your problem it may not.
If that fails you have to work in a sort of Offline mode. Go to the publisher website and choose to view your report as DATA (XML) then select the export function.
Save the file and then open Word with the Add on.
You can log in with the word add on if you want. Then select from the Oracle BI menu select Data>Load Sample XML Data
Select the xml document you saved earlier.
If you still have trouble creating the template then remove some rows from the exported xml document and try again.
Tip: The Word add on is rather sloppy with its use of memory. If you get a warning message about low memory, save your work. Save it every two or so major actions till it finally crashes. Then try again.
good luck and let me know how it goes.

  • Creating big reports in bi publisher

    hi,
I am new to bipublisher and need help regarding creating big reports in bipublisher. reports with like 1 lakh and above rows. I am connect to target database using jdbc connection and from there I am query's the target table on another database using dblink. The table over dblink has more than 1 lakh rows.
when i run the query in sqlplus prompt, I get the records almost within a second, it starts scrolling over my screen. However when I run it from bi-publisher, it shows processing for much time and then displays error as " error retriving data xml"
    Please help.

Look at this recommendations if you are in BIP11g
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/bi.1111/e22254/technq_large.htm#BGBEAFFH
The one below applies to BIP11g and BIP10g.
Set to TRUE: Enable scalable feature of XSLT processor
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/bi.1111/e22254/set_report_props.htm#foprop
This will help you run the report regardless the number of rows being returned.
Though be warned it will consume most of your server resources.

  • Big reports and errors

I have to genarate realy big reports (10 MB or greater) using WebServices as data
    sources
Is there any way of generating this report in parts and then marge this parts
    in one big report?
If something fails (for example problems with network connection) I don't want
to start all from begining, and I want to use same partial results of previous
    report genaration
    thanks for help
    Rafa³ Paj¹k

In the current release of LD, if part of the query fails, the whole query fails.
If you want to have the pieces individually, you will need to write individual
XQueries for each part. You can create one result by assembling the parts in an
XQuery that takes each of the parts as a Complex Parameter Type.

  • One big report, multiple views

is it ok (as a good practice) in OBIEE Answers, when dealing with a complex BM, to build a big report with lots of dimensions and measures involved , and then create many views for that report, each using a limited number of dimensions / measures available in the report ?
I have experienced a few cases when a complex report with multiple views displays incorrect results , while if creating simpler reports for each of the views the results are correct.
and that seems to me because, on each of the small simple reports a correct sql query is generated, while on the big report OBIEE tries to achieve the requirements using just one or two much more complex (and with lower granularity) queries ( the result of which are are used by presentation layer to further compute -sometimes incorrectly- the values for each of the report views).
sometimes even when I exclude a dimension column from all views (while is still present in the report) the sql query generated still use it.
is this a normal behavior ? have anyone experienced similar issues ? I'm having some hard time explaining these to the users that create reports.
    thank you.

Couldn't find anything in the documentation to support that , though. How to explain this to the report writers ? many times it is more convenient to them to just create a big report with lots of views...instead of many reports.

  • Run big report in PDF hangs though the PDF file was created in server

When running Oracle reports6i big master-details-details report(220 pages) in PDF format thru report server CGI on Netscape Enterprise Web server, it hangs. But the pdf file was created when checking in the server and is good when it's viewed directly using IE. Also checked the http://domain_name:8083/cgi-bin/reportcgi/showjobs?server=repsrv, the Job Status was 'FINISHED'.
The HTTP_error_Log in the server is:
[17/Feb/2004:13:31:42] failure (28995): for host 63.237.37.70 trying to POST /cgi-bin/reportcgi, cgieng_scan_headers reports: the CGI program /usr/netscape/elecprod/cgi-bin/reportcgi did not produce a valid header (read failed, error is Resource temporarily unavailable).
Please help as our users demand it urgently.
    Thanks a lot.

    1) This bug734197 is fixed in version 3.0.5.13.0, which means it should be available in 6i (the version you are using) also. But from the bug description I see that it is reproduced with Reports 6.0.5.28.0 version also. If your reports 6i version is higher than this, it may contain this fix. Best thing is to apply the latest patch. The patches should be available in metalink (metalink.oracle.com) .
    2) For troubleshooting purposes run the report in html/rtf and see whether it times out. ( just to see whether
this is a PDF specific issue)
    3) Disable acrobat web integration (in Adobe acrobat settings) and try . This will prevent Acrobat reader from opening the pdf automatically and instead will show a dialog to save the pdf report ( There are some IE - Adobe issues which are not reports bugs).
    4) There were some threads some time back which had this problem with long running reports and PDF. Finally it turned out to be webserver timeout problems. Pls see ( this is for 9i servlet and Apache webserver, but for 6i also it could be similar)
Re: Long running reports end successfully - present s "page can not be foun
    5) If these does not work and if you are not able to make further progress, I suggest you to get in touch with Oracle Support (if you have a support contract) to solve this issue. [ If the possibility is that the bug you are mentioning is not pushed forward to 6i (a remote chance) then only they will be able to a get a oneoff patch.]
    Thanks

  • Performance of Big Report Programs

    Hi SAP Experts,
I want to know whether we can put the trace on the Report Programs which are taking on almost around 10 hours to execute or how can we put a trace on background jobs.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Harsh Goel

    Hi Harsh,
The problem with the report will be mostly due to the select queries.
So better do one thing, execute your program in debug mode, keep a break point before the select query, activate the trace in ST05 transaction and after executing the select query deactivate the trace
Now look in display trace for the time it takes for the query.
you can follow the same method for each query and check which query takes a long time and rectify that.
To reduce ABAP/4 program runtime, always follow the ABAP/4 program optimization techniques given below:
    1. Avoid 'SELECT *'. Instead use select with field names i.e. SELECT f1 f2 f3 and so on.
    2. Use table (primary) keys (as far as possible) in the WHERE clause of the select statements. Else, check for secondary indexes.
    3. Avoid nested selects or nested loops.
    4. Use binary search wherever possible.
    5. Avoid use of joins in the select queries.
    5. You can evaluate the performance using GET RUN TIME command for small pieces of program. Try using this statement for SELECT queries to know how much time your SELECT query takes to execute.
    Example
    DATA: gv_runtime1       TYPE i,
          gv_runtime2       TYPE i,
          gv_final          TYPE i.
    GET RUN TIME FIELD gv_runtime1.
    SELECTu2026u2026
    GET RUN TIME FIELD gv_runtime2.
    gv_final = gv_runtime2 - gv_runtime1.
    WRITE: 'Execution time=', gv_final.
If you still have any doubts please let me know.

  • SSRS Caching for a big Report

    Hi All
in one of the new requirement . Users want to see the data even if the Source is not avaiable . How can we achieve this . It is possible to store the result in Cache,?   Is it possible to set the report so that when the Source is available the
data should come from datasource  Otherwise it should come from Cache memory . Please suggest me the best practice.
    Surendra Thota

    Hello,
You could create & use snapshot, a snapshot is a copy of the Report + data stored in ReportServer database; see

  • Master-detail reports with variable number of pages in a big report

    I am designing with Reports 6.0.5.32.0 a master-detail report such as a
combination between a customer with his name, address etc, at the top of
the page (always 60% of the first page) and then as details lines with his orders.
For one customer seems relatively OK with the variable number of pages in accordance with the number of his orders.
When the main query finds more customers I present always the customer at the top of
a new page (that's easy), but how can I control the number of the next pages for the orders, variable for every customer.
I can not predict how many pages are necessary for a customer and white pages are
not desirable. When the number of Max. Vertical Body Pages is too low I can get the next pages for every customer, but appears an
    uncontrollable shift to the left.
For instance, a customer with 40 orders needs 3 pages, one with 4 orders only 1 page, one with 15 orders 2 pages, etc.
What's the magic property for a secure and precise layout?

    Hi Andreas,
did you try setting vertical spacing to expand or variable on master repeating frame (and posible other frames surrounding master repeating frame)?
    Hope this helps

  • Downloading a report in excel format : getBlob WIS 30270 Error

    Hello experts,
I 'm working in "Business Objects XI R2 SP2", the server is a "windows 2003 server".
I have a big report , that some times returns me that message error when I try to download it in excel format:
Error message: "An internal error occured while calling the getblob api error wis30270".
The number of lines in the report is 27800, the number of columns is 62, the file is 27mb.
If I push the drill button the I can download it without errors, but this is not a good solution for the final users...
    Best regards
    Camillo

    Hi Camillo,
Following information might help you to resolve the issue.
.Business Objects Enterprise provides thresholds to protect the WebIntelligence report server and the Web Application servers from processing large chunks of binary and character data and avoid crashing.
Maximum Binary File Size: Maximum size of a binary file (for example: PDF, XLSu2026) that can be generated by the Report Server. If a binary file generated from a Web Intelligence document is greater than this limit, the generation is stopped to protect the server and an error is returned. Increase this limit if the server has to generate large binary files (for example, if InfoView users view large documents in *.pdf format).
Maximum Character File Size: Maximum size of a text stream (for example: HTML, XML) that will be transferred to the application server. If a text stream sent to the application server is greater than this limit, the generation is stopped to protect the server and an error is returned.
In CMC, under Servers>WebIntelligence Report server, you can possibly set both the above values to 50MB, but you have to ensure that the application server can handle the increased load multiplied by the number of simultaneous connections. If not, it can crash and block all access to applications.
    2. Ensure that the Web Application servers have enough memory available to process incoming requests. Usually the -Xmx value for java process is set at 256Mb, which is recommended to be at least 1024Mb or more depending on your Export requirements and application server limitations.

  • Breaking up Crystal report into e-mailable sub-reports

First time poster, long time ignoramus...
The company I work for uses Crystal Reports (version 11, don't judge me) to create our invoices.  The invoices are created as one big report, and then, after printing, we manually separate the pages by customer so that we can mail the invoices appropriately.
What I would like to do is create the reports in such a way that we can merge them with available e-mail addresses (from a separate program) and e-mail the invoice to the customer.  Not all customers will have an e-mail address on file, and I would still need to print those invoices for which we lack an e-mail address so that they can be mailed.
I'm barely skilled with Crystal Reports, but not completely new to it.  Is there a way to configure my current report to reflect these two changes (merge with available e-mail addresses, and print only those invoices that cannot be e-mailed)?
Thanks in advance for any parsing work you have to make to understand my question, and I will answer any questions you have that might clarify my post as promptly as possible.
    Aaron

Creating one big report is the start of your problems. E.g.; Dell is correct in that there is no way to take a subreport, merge it with an email address and so on. However, what about creating one small report and in your app passing it what ever parameter you need and loop through for next parameter.
    E.g.;
    Load report
    Connect to a database
Pass a parameter or selection formula to the report (say customer name)
Run and email the report (see How to export a report to MAPI destination in VS .NET).
Do a .Close and .Dispose on the report
    Load report
    Connect to a database
Pass a new parameter or selection formula
Also, see KBA: 1295243 - How to export to MAPI using CRYSTALREPORT .NET SDK
I would also highly recommend updating to CR XI R2 (11.5). See this blog on how to.
Finally, note that both CR XI and CR XI R2 are out of support and may not support your version of Outlook or what ever email client you are using. E.g.; I'd be leery using Outlook 2007 - but I don't know what CR XI / XI R2 supported.

  • Browser Time out in Reports (using WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT to call reports)

When running a big report which takes a long time to run, it finishes on the report server but in the browser the screen is stuck at the parameter form, you don't see the report output. It's as if the browser has timedout. Is there a solution to this?
I am running reports using WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT only - through a URL. This seems to be a huge drawback of using this method.

    Is the browser launching?
If it is have you tried a show source on the browser window?
Sometimes if you open an XML file in a browser you get a blank page but the XML is there. Something to do with the XML format I think. I'm no expert on XML just a behaviour I have observed.

  • How do you identify when a report has finished?

    Hi all,
I've got a big report that is taking a while to run (approx 1min) and the problem I'm having is that my users are getting bored of waiting and starting to click around my web application and re-running the report because they think it has failed. The re-running of the report is causing more load on the system and the reports to run even slower. What I would like to do is stop them re-runnning the report maybe by somehow locking the web page until BI publisher has finished but I don't know how to get a message back from BI publisher.
Currently I'm running the BI publisher report by having a button push which redirects the users web browser to a url such as:
    'http://'||:BI_PATH||'/xmlpserver'||:BI_DIRECTORY||'/Custom Reports/'||:p180_report||'/'||:p180_report||'.xdo?_xpf=&_xpt=1&_xdo='||:BI_DIRECTORY||'%2FCustom%20Reports%2F'||:p180_report||'%2F'||:p180_report||'.xdo&_xt='||:p90_template||'&_xf=rtf&_xmode=4'
And then as I'm returning an rtf doc the familiar save, open or cancel popup comes up. The problem is that before the popup appears they can re-click the run report button.
One way round it I've thought of is to have the report generate to a file system and redirect the user to a waiting page that checks periodically for the files existance and then when it does exist forward the user to a page with a view report button. This sounds like a lot of effort, does anybody know of a better way?
I've also wondered if running the report using webservices would be an option, is there a way of getting BI publisher to run a web service when a report has finished? This could then interact with my back end server and the web page could act on that, or am I totally barking up the wrong tree?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Darren.

    Hi Darren
    couple of ideas
    1. Rather than 'run' the report, get it to run through the scheduler immediately. Once its running through the scheduler you could then poll the scheduler tables to see when it completes. You could either redirect the users to a wait page or show an egg timer until the document has been created. this would require the document to be delivered to somewhere for you to poll as the URL will not return a job id.
    2. Bit more involved but probably better is to hook into BIPs web services. So rather than the button issue an http request it calls a servlet to issue a web service call to BIP to schedule a report. The WS will return the job id to the caller, you can then poll the scheduler via a ws to check the progress of the job. Once complete you can then retrieve the result form the scheduler tables via another call.
    Food for thought I hope
    Tim

  • Crystal Report error exporting to Word

My company recently deployed a Microsoft Security Patch to our workstations that's causing a problem with Crystal Reports. When exporting a Crystal report to a Word file (from a VB 6 application) the following error is generated when opening the file: "You are attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry policy setting."
My company uses Crystal Reports v 8.0.1.0. Is there a more recent release that provides a fix for this error?
    Thanks.
    David
Edited by: David Verbinski on Nov 5, 2008 10:35 PM

I know 100mb works because I have created word document reports with that size before using the crystal export.  Just really big reports.  I'm not sure on the exact size because it doesnu2019t work but I know there is more data in the report than the 100MB report which works so it doesnu2019t work on some reports larger than that (don't know the specific size because it doesnu2019t work) sorry for being redundant.
Not sure about a size limitation on an RTF formatted document that is saved as a *.doc (word document).
It's my understanding that exporting to a .doc is the same as exporting to .rtf because the .doc is in .rtf format.  I may be wrong but if you change a .rtf extension to a .doc extension, you get the same thing when opening the file in word.
When exporting to RTF format I get the same error, so I believe they are using the same or similar process.
Yes I tried on other machines and different servers and the error only occurs when exporting large documents to word.  Small documents work fine.
If there are file constraints in exporting to word, I believe a more distinct error message could be displayed related to the specific error.
No I did not upgrade my pc or software, I developed the report and am running specificly for 11.5 release 2 with service pace 3 installed.
    Thanks,
    K
