Captivate 1.0 changing demo to simulation

First off, I'm using Captivate 1.0 and I'm fairly new in
using it to its full capacity. Soon I'll be upgrading to Captivate
3, but until then I'm working with what I have. That being said,
I've recorded a demonstration of a process in one of our company
tools and after viewing the preview found it rather bland. I want
to add some interactivity - kind of like a simulation where the
user clicks through the steps instead of just watching them... in
addition to watching the demo.
So, here are my questions:
How can I add interactivity to a Captivate 1.0 project
without having to rerecord the screens and manually going through
each slide to set up the interactivity?
If this is not possible with this version, what would you
recommend as the most efficient way to getting my project to the
point I outlined?

Great advice MrsZev. Thank you. I can recall something
similar happening one time with my captions when I resized a
movie... all of them were off their mark after that. I did manage
to salvage a half-baked copy back to the original - ended up having
to re-record in a different screen size. Hopefully at least that
feature has been "fixed" in Cap3 (??)
As for audio: I've not journeyed that route through audio
land yet, so as future needs come up, I'll be starting that out
fresh in Cap3.
Overall, I'm looking forward to diving into the new features
and cranking out some great e-learning curriculum... now if only my
IT department would move a little faster to get it installed...

Loaded Captivate MovieClip properties changing

I have a 25 frame main movie which I call the wrapper.
Frame 1 initializes variable for first movie clip url to be
loaded (actually Captivate single slide instructions) and holds
preloader
Frame 2 loads default movie clip (from Frame 1) and has a
menu to allow the user to load 3 other Captivate movie clips.
(Demo, Sim, or Test) It is 20 frames for animation onto stage
Frame 25 is just stop()
My problem is that formatting on a slide in Captivate is
changing when loaded into my wrapper.
As I am not setting any formatting on the screen or on the
loader, I am confused as to how to prevent this from happening.
Below is the ActionScript. Both the wrapper and the CaptivateMovies
are running 30 fps. All are published to Flash 8 player.

(Help):timestep too small error and how to do changes in the simulation

HI ALL,
I have a constant current source circuit.When i tried to simulate, it gives me a message that time step too small.I changed in the simulation as the way in the forum,but the error still exit.
i saw the presentation on the SPICE simulation options in http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5418#toc4, and changed correlation parameter, but it's no help.
How to change the simulation options in the MULTISIM?
How do i can avoid some very generic error?
Everybody can give some advices and experiences about the MULTISIM setting for new personality. You can discuss the familiar problems and resolvents.

I found something else here that the convergence assistant never told me about when it went through its paces. It not only changed the method to Gear but it also changed Upper Transient Iteration Limit (ITL4) from 100 to 10000. So you have to change that.That is in the Transient Tab where you changed to the METHOD to Gear.
After finding this, you don't have to change the METHOD only ITL4 from 100 to 10,000. If the Convergence Assistant had notified me of this change at first then I would have told you that also, but it just told me that it switched the Method only. I came to question this only after loading simulation setting that I had saved previously that were already set to GEAR. It wouldn't simulate and the Assistant couldn't fix it. I then compared what it did the first time with my settings and the only difference was IT4 had been increased.
I am sorry if this caused any problems, but I blame the assitant for not giving me full info on changes made.
That setting just by itself has seemed to make things more stable on my end as far as the circut problems I desctibed in a previous post where sometimes circuits would simulate and sometime they wouldn't. I will continue trying this setting across all my circuits and see it this is what I have been looking for also.

Change demo mode to assessment

Hello,
Is there any easy way to take a project already created in
Demonstration mode, and turn it into an Assessment Simulation that
can be reported to my LMS? I am working in Captivate 3.0. Thank

Further to what Rick said...
I demonstrated this techinque in a class yesterday.
Step 1: Use Find and Replace to Locate ALL Highight boxes.
Click on the slide (lower portion of F/R Dialog) and if note
required for that slide delete the highlight. Repeat for each
slide.
Step 2 ; Review language of Text Captions, if the standard
'active voice' then all should be OK, otherwise use F/R to change
the words Eg. 'Watch As' --> 'Select'
Step 3 : Edit the Text Captions to remove any that may have
direct call outs pointing to objects. Change the caption style to
style 1 (no call out)
Step 4 : If you want to put emphasis on specific words within
the captions the easiest way is to export the Captions/Closed
Captions to word. Make the changes in word. Import back in again.
Step 5 : Add a click box to one slide, setting appropriate
propertes (Success/Failure Captions, On Success / Failure). Size
the click box to suit. Copy the Click box. Change to storyboard
view then, Control Click slides needing interaction. Paste the
Click box to each slide and then edit each one to suit.
Step 6 : Define any reporting options, add quizzes etc...
Not a quick technique at all - but if you have a good
workflow at least there can be some logic to it!

All Quiz Slides Automatically Changed (by captivate) when ANY change is made to a Quiz Slide

When I make a change to a quiz slide, captivate automatically adds the "Back" button (which was previously deleted) to *all* quiz slides and extends *all* quiz slide length by several seconds. This is very frustrating to have to go back to every quiz slide (which are interspersed thought the project) to remove the "back" button and correct the slide length. Thoughts anyone?

Did you read that blog post that I indicated in the other thread about questions?
Default pausing point is at 1.5 secs. If you leave the Success/Last attempt action to default 'Continue' users have to wait 1.5secs, never 3 secs.
If you want to reduce the time, you can drag the pausing point bit more to the right to decrement the non-active part (not totally till end). That is the best solution, especially if some users will have to work with restricted bandwidth. Or you use Go to Next Slide instead of Continue for the actions.

When i transition from demo to simulation I get a black loading ring, any way to remove?

The loading ring is the preloader. It lets the user know that some background activity is happening while he waits. If you remove this, the user might see a blank screen in its place and they may think there is a bug in the output or they have reached the end and close the window.
However if you still want to remove it, you can go to Edit > Preferences > Project > Start and End, and clear the Preloader checkbox.

Captivate 4 will not record software simulation with Windows 7

Hi,
I have a Dell M6400 labptop, 32-bit, operating system is Windows 7. The patch I downloaded through Help->Updates-> on Captivate fixed
my microphone problem, but did not help the software simulation problem.
I get as far in the process as having the screen setup with the red bounding box and controls visible. After choosing automatic I then click on the record button. There is a shutter sound, but it won't save anything. I get back to Captivate and it has not recorded anything.
I then installed it on my main computer which is 32-bit and uses windows xp. I did exactly the same thing as my above mentioned laptop and it did the software capture beautifully. So it must be the Windows 7.
I am disappointed that the patch didn't fix that. Will one be coming soon that will?

Okay, I have been trying to use Photoshop CS4 Extended as my software simulation. It refused to work on Captivate 4
numerous tries, but now for some reason it is working fine. The only thing that I did different was to go into Photoshop's
preference-->performance--> and the openGL was unchecked and I checked it. I think that Photoshop had a problem and turned off the
the openGL. I have the latest update for my graphic card, so I'm not sure why it affected the GPU.
I didn't think to try other programs, but now I have, and they are working fine too.
It could be that the problem was with Photoshop instead of Captivate.

Adobe Captivate Soft Skills elearning demo

Hello Captivators,
I went to the following site about Captivate:

Located on this page was an interesting demo on "soft skills"
elearning. What really caught my interest, is part way thru the
demo (2 or 3 slide in or so) was located a button in the upper left
of the captivate view screen, that was labeled "Behind the Scenes".
When this button was clicked, it displayed, rather nicely, some
information and a nice chart/graph of what was happening in the
demo. I was wondering how they accomplished that effect. One click
and the info would show, and click again, and the demo continues
where it left off.
Does anyone know how to implement that type of functionality?
Also is it possible while progressing through a scenario based
elearning exercise, to track what the user's last slide was. Much
like a cookie for a web page, etc??? So if the user would click a
"back" button, it would put the user back on the last slide he or
she was viewing.

From what I'm seeing, this is a simple Rollover Image object.
You mouse over and an image the size of the movie displays. Should
be fairly simple to accomplish.

Captivate 4 Arbitrarily Changing Quiz Question Values?

I've got a client who uses Captivate 4, and she's having a problem with quiz score values. She has 12 separate assessments, each with either 10, 15, or 25 questions, and she's very sure she has consistent question values in each so that each quiz adds up to 100 points.
Other users have opend the .cp movies and found the quizzes don't add up. Some vary as much as 10 points. When she opens the files, they're at 100 points. I opened one in Cap 5.5 and found that the value of two questions changed.
Any ideas on what's going on? I do remember that another client a few years ago was having scoring fits with Cap 3 along these same lines. I don't know if he ever found a solution.

Were any of these quiz questions originally created in an earlier version of Captivate and then upgraded?
Is this client using Report as SCORE instead of Report as PERCENTAGE in Quiz Settings?
If using SCORE, and you always need to have the questions add up to 100 for everything to work, I would suggest you try using Percentage instead. It's usually easier to work with.

Flash in Captivate (code to change slides?)

Good Morning Captivate Users!
I was actually inquiring if there was a way to put in a command where when I press an existing flash project in captivate it will alter to the next slide. I have tried putting in a click button but when I do, it will not allow the flash to move when hovering over the actual item. (Example: the Flash buttons are designed to 'glow' when you over them, but if I put a click vox in front of it, it will not glow, the click box will be dominant over it.) I was wondering if either there is code I could put into the flash project for it to change slides or if there is something in captivate that I am not thinking of, maybe something I can do with the click box to make it work without me inputting all this code.
I am currently using Captivate 4.

Hi there
If you want a button to appear to glow when you mouse over it, you can easily accomplish that using image buttons. You just use an image without the glow as the base, then a second image with the glow as the mouseover.
Other than that, perhaps one of our resident Flashy type folks can advise on what voodoo incantation you might use to coax Flash to behave for you in Captivate.

Recording Demo and Simulation Modes

Prior to beginning my recording session, I'm selecting the
Demontration and Training Simulation mode. When I complete the
recording and save, Captivate prompts me with a "Project to Open"
field that contains: Demonstration or Training Simulation. My goas
was to have the first section of the project as a demonstration and
the subsequent section as a Training Simulation. How do I combine
both the Demonstration Mode and Training Simulation Mode into one
file? It appears that although Captivate allows you to record in
both modes, you must save in one or the other????

Welcome to our community, Curtis
As you have seen, Captivate does create two files when you
record that way. However, it doesn't mean you can't have both in a
single project if you like. But before you do that, please note
that projects DO have a suggested maximum size. Adobe Technical
Support seems to be advising folks that 50 Megs for the CP (source)
file of your project is considered the upper limit. Personally, my
recommendation has always been 50-65 slides as a very broad and
general rule of thumb. So if each project is already at or beyond
that size, I wouldn't go there with having both in a single
project.
Assuming the combined project would fit within those
guidelines, you may open one project, then click File > Import
> Slides/Objects... and point at the other file to bring it in
and combine it with the original. Note that you would want to first
select the last slide in the original project, so that the new
stuff would follow that slide and append.
Assuming this would create a project that is too large to
handle, you should consider leaving them as separate projects, then
using what we call a "Daisy Chain" so the next is opened by the
project as the first ends.

Captivate Crashes when Changing Existing Projects

Hi
I've created 9 Captivate Projects using Captivate 4. I'm now going back to change some of them. With 4 of them, every time I duplicate a slide or add new recorded slides, Captivate crashes. I don't have time to recreate them from scratch.
The files range in size from 7.5 mb to 9.5 mb.
I'm using VM Ware to connect from a virtual Wyse terminal to a virtual PC. Captivate is installed on the virtual PC.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

That's a pretty complex setup for Captivate, especially considering how dependant it seems to be on local video card support. Your going through a lot of virtualization layers that - I'm surprised CP opens for you at all! ;-)
Is this the same setup you had when originally authoring?
There's no way you can try to edit directly on a 'real' PC?
If not, you could try copying all slides in the CP project file, then pasting them into a new, blank CP file (or, alternatively, create a new, blank CP file and do an import on the current CP file). Sometimes that process helps resolve corruption or other 'bad pointer' issues...

Captivate 5.5 - Change default highlight box settings before recording

Hi, I'm trying to change the color of the default highlight box added to recordings. I need to change this at the global settings level and not project and before recording starts. Any suggestions?

Could you explain this 'at the global settings level and not project....'? What did you change? Normally you'll have to change the object style of the highlight box:
If you do this without opening the first CP-file, the style will be applied to all your new projects while recording.

Captivate 4: Font Changing After Publish

I am having an issue that I just cannot seem to resolve and I think I have tried everything. When view the published training the font in some of the caption boxes is changing both in style and size. I have tried to delete the caption and recreate it from scratch, recreating the slide itself from scratch, using select all in the caption and changing the font, and removing the check from the anti-aliasing on transparent captions. Nothing seems to be working an I ever tried switching to AS2 and still no change. Below are screenshots of the correct Font Myrid Pro 13 and the unknown incorrect font. Has anyone ever experienced this issue in the past?

Hello,
Did see that you inserted a variable. There were indeed quite a lot of issues with inserted variables in a Text Caption in CP4. One possible solution is: try to make a TC with only the variable and position it on the other Text Caption.

How to create a simulation using Captivate 8 ?

I want to create a simulation for a tool which would ask for promts to enter values in input boxes, click buttons etc. The instructions should come one by one before a user is promted to enter value in the respective input boxes and click on buttons. How to create it ? I also want to edit the instruction texts after the recording is done. Please help!!

That is what Captivate was originally designed for: software simulations. Use that kind of New project, Record Software simulation (is also on the Welcome screen, New) and be sure to check Training (better, check also Assessment and Demo). What will happen can be checked in Preferences, Recording, Modes (settings for the 3 recording modes). The text that will be added (you can choose the language before capture) can be edited in a file with extension rdl. Each slide that will be captured, you'll hear a camera click. Both text, click boxes and TEB's will be added automatically but it never hurts to insert an extra slide during capture using the Print Screen button (see Keys for the shortcuts in Preferences). After ending capture with the keyboard key End, you'll have three files (if you checked the 3 modes) that you can edit easily: text will be in a normal text caption or in a shape if you checked that preference and allows normal editing. Same for TEB's, click boxes, highlight boxes. I tend to change the default highlight box before capture using a bright color and more width for the border than the very fine light blue one that is default in most themes.
