Client trust fails 1st time, after two refreshes succeeds
For some reason this year after installing NW6.5 SP7, my BM 3.9 server seems to be failing to authenticate via the Client Trust the first time someone tries to open a web browser.
If the end-users click refresh in the browser two or three times, the trust authentication then succeeds and all is well from that point forward.
The NW6.5 BM machine in question was also virtualized last summer but I don't see what that would have to do with anything. The servers were upgraded and the original BM server converted to virtual disk files.
This machine has an I2O SCSI RAID controller and Novell decided to stop I2O support back in SP6, while Microsoft continues to support I2O without complaint. So to deal with the I2O support problems the machine runs Windows 2003 SP2, the free VMWare Server 1.06, and NW65SP7.
The machine has dual 1.4 ghz Xeons, and windows task manager load never exceeds 20% on CPU 1, with zero load on CPU 2. Two gig of RAM and 1 gig allocated to the BM VM, so the machine is not busy and it is not thrashing its memory.
A third issue the might be related but I cannot tell, is that the DSRepair Time synchronization check always shows a +1 for this server (from other servers) or a -1 for other servers (from this server). The time sources appear to be configured correctly, with a different NW65SP7 server being the master for all local servers including this one.
Yes, I am aware of SP8. I don't do service packs during the school year. I am going to have to wait until at least June before that can be done.
The little issues you noted seem entirely unrelated to me (timesync,
hardware, etc.)
What we need is a little more specific data for troubleshooting.
CLNTRUST works as follows:
1. Browser requests file from proxy, and proxy sees need to
authenticate user.
2. PROXY issues a UDP 3024 request TO the client. Note that this is
not a request initiated by the client where the proxy responds to it.
It is a request initiated by the server to the client, so the client
firewall has to allow that traffic.
3. Proxy waits for specified amount of time for a response from the
client. This is 3 seconds by default, which is normally plenty of
time. However, feel free to increase that value a bit, say to 5
seconds. (In the Authentication Context menu for Proxy). If you go
higher than 5 seconds, and it helps, I have to question what's wrong
with your network! Anyway, it can be useful to capture packets to see
what is going on. PKTSCAN.NLM can be used on the server to do that.
Wireshark can be used on the client.
4. Client PC receives a CLNTRUST request, and CLNTRUST responds.
Client32 also (I think) passes data to the server with user name and
password hash. However it works at this point, the important thing
about debugging here is that you should see a successful request in the
CLNTRUST stats. Problems include seeing no requests at all (0 usually
means firewall blocked the inbound traffic, though a nat hop between
server and client can also do that. Thousands of failed requests
usually means client isn't logged in or is not in the same tree).
5. Client PC's responses are returned to server, which looks up
username and confirms password hash. Proxy associates browser's IP
address with user name and compares name against access rules. User
name shows up in log files.
So, look for presence of UDP 3024 packets at the client to start with.
If there are network issues, where packets get dropped, you might see
the symptoms described.

Updating Adobe Community Help files fails every time after starting
Hello,
I e.g. go to «Support Center for Photoshop» from the menu within the app. Adobe Community Help starts up and tells me theres new content, do I want to download that. It seems to start the dl just fine, then reports an error «16882» (if I'm remembering it right).
Why? We have very fast very broadband internet connection and I use a 2011 27" iMac with max Gig RAM installed.
Any hints there would be appreciated.
Thanks!Thanks, Mister Kapoor,
that solved my problem!
All the best to you, sincerely,

Seems Adobe Air or Cummunity help has gone cprrupt. Lets follow the below suggestions:
Step 1: Uninstall adobe air from Utilities and re-install the latest adobe AIR from "http://get.adobe.com/air/otherversions/"
Step 2: Follow "http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/842/cpsid_84215.html" and re-install the Community Help Air application.
Step 3: Restart the machine and launch adobe Community Help and try to install all the updates and check if it works fine.
Hope that Helps!.

Performance issue in browsing SSAS cube using Excel for first time after cube refresh
Hello Group Members,
This is a continuation of my earlier blog question -
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a1e424a2-f102-4165-a597-f464cf03ebb5/cache-and-performance-issue-in-browsing-ssas-cube-using-excel-for-first-time?forum=sqlanalysisservices
As that thread is marked as answer, but my issue is not resolved, I am creating a new thread.
I am facing a cache and performance issue for the first time when I try to open a SSAS cube connection using Excel (using Data tab -> From Other Sources --> From Analysis Services) after daily cube refresh. In end users system (8 GB RAM but around
4GB available RAM), for the first time, it takes 10 minutes to open the cube. From next run onwards, its open up quickly within 10 secs.
We have daily ETL process running in high end servers. The configuration of dedicated SSAS cube server is 8 core, 64GB RAM. In total we have 4 cube DB - out of which for 3 is full cube refresh and 1 is incremental refresh. We have seen after daily cube
refresh, it takes 10 odd minutes to open the cube in end users system. From next time onwards, it opens up really fast with 10 secs. After cube refresh, in server systems (32 GB RAM, around 4GB available RAM), it takes 2 odd minutes to open the cube.
Is there, any way we could reduce the time taken for first attempt ?
As mentioned in my previous thread, we have already implemented a cube wraming cache. But, there is no improvement.
Currently, the cumulative size of the all 4 cube DB are more than 9 GB in Production and each cube DB having 4 individual cubes in average with highest cube DB size is 3.5 GB. Now, the question is how excel works with SSAS cube after
daily cube refresh?
Is it Excel creates a cache of the schema and data after each time cube is refreshed and in doing so it need to download the cube schema in Excel's memory? Now to download the the schema and data of each cube database from server to client, it will take
a significant time based on the bandwidth of the network and connection.
Is it anyway dependent to client system RAM ? Today the bigest cube DB size is 3.5 GB, tomorrow it will be 5-6 GB. Now, though client system RAM is 8 GB, the available or free RAM would be around 4 GB. So, what will happen then ?
Best Regards, Arka Mitra.Could you run the following two DMV queries filling in the name of the cube you're connecting to. Then please post back the row count returned from each of them (by copying them into Excel and counting the rows).
I want to see if this is an issue I've run across before with thousands of dimension attributes and MDSCHEMA_CUBES performance.
select [HIERARCHY_UNIQUE_NAME]
from $system.mdschema_hierarchies
where CUBE_NAME = 'YourCubeName'
select [LEVEL_UNIQUE_NAME]
from $system.mdschema_levels
where CUBE_NAME = 'YourCubeName'
Also, what version of Analysis Services is it? If you connect Object Explorer in Management Studio to SSAS, what's the exact version number it says on the top server node?

Sorry, I'm using SCCM 2012 but can't find a forum for that ANYWHERE, so I'm posting this here:
We're making our first attempt at OSD (build & capture) on an out-of-the box Dell Optiplex 9010 all-in-one. I've injected the NIC drivers found
here on Dell's Enterprise support blog into the boot image.
Using PXE boot, the machine starts up in WinPE when we deploy the task sequence, but every time it reaches the "preparing network connections" message in the splash screen, WinPE quits and the machine reboots.
I've hit F8 to get the command line while WinPE is booting, and from running ipconfig there, it looks like the machine takes a long time to pick up its IP address from DHCP, but it DOES pick up an IP address eventually which implies to me that the NIC driver
is at least somewhat working.
See below for the wpeinit.log file from this machine. What am I doing wrong? What's that message about "no operational adapters found", expecially when I've verified that it does get an IP address (albeit after a short while)?

boot hit the "Preparing network connections" step, and I repeatedly ipconfig /renewed until suddenly the TS reached the next step of the sequence instead of failing out.
I also made this an "Available" sequence instead of a "Required" sequence, which I think buys you a little time in terms of offering a GUI in WinPE for the sequence, instead of just trying to run it.
One last thing: I was running this on a Workgroup machine that is not joined to our domain; I had followed another tutorial to get the client installed on it even though it's outside the domain. Prior to trying the command-line fix fusiongroup gave, I also
went into Assets and Compliance in Configuration Manager and right-clicked the machine in the list of devices, and found that I had to "Approve" it for management by SCCM. Don't know if that helped as well.

Package fails first time after changes
Hi,
I have a package that I am making changes to. I'm running the package via the SQL Plus Worksheet. After making the changes to the package and recompiling, I try to execute the program from SQL Plus Worksheet and get this error message:
BEGIN xml_import_export_package2_NED.start_transfer(:v_error_no, :v_error_message,:v_error_procedure); END;
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-04068: existing state of packages has been discarded
ORA-04061: existing state of package "AVENTISDM.XML_IMPORT_EXPORT_PACKAGE2_NED" has been invalidated
ORA-04065: not executed, altered or dropped package "AVENTISDM.XML_IMPORT_EXPORT_PACKAGE2_NED"
ORA-06508: PL/SQL: could not find program unit being called
ORA-06512: at line 1
The package does not run. However, when I execute it again it works fine. I'm now concerned that if I make a change to a package during the day, that is scheduled to run at night, that it will fail unless I run it once first.
Is this behaviour by design?
Regards,
NedThis behaviour is by design, but it should not be a problem for your scheduled job.
When you run the package in sqlplus, the package is loaded into SGA, and a pointer to this area is in your PGA. When you re-compile the package, the copy in SGA is invalidated. When you then try to re-run the package, the invalid pointer causes the error. Running it the second time causes a re-load of the package and the re-creation of the pointer. However, a new session (which your scheduled job would have) would not have the invalid pointer, so would work correctly.

Windows 8.1 client backup fails every time at 1%
I have just added a brand new Win 8.1 client to the network, installed the connector etc. However the SBS backup repeatedly fails at 1%. I have seen similar posts that refer to drive errors, missing partitions etc, but this is a new device.
The log states:
"Windows server client computer backup service received an abort process message from <computername>. Reason: 5"
So the client is doing something to interrupt the backup but I cannot find what '5' means. When I click the link in the log message it returns 'nothing found'! I have changed the power settings so the laptop does not sleep but that makes no difference.
It also makes no difference if the backup is initiated from the server dashboard or the client connector.
Any advice appreciated!
Andrew
AndrewHi Andrew,
Before going further, would you please let me confirm whether only that new Windows 8.1 client computer encounter
this issue?
Please logon the SBS 2011 and open Dashboard. Then select Computers and Backup tab and navigate to this Windows
8.1 client computer. Please check if the Status of the Windows 8.1 client computer shows as
Online. Did find any Critical or Warning information in Alerts? If click that problematic Windows 8.1 on the Dashboard and select
Start a backup for the computer task, will encounter the same issue?
Meanwhile, please follow the path:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs, then check some relevant backup log files if find more clues.

SBS 2008 Standard - Windows Backup fails first time after every reboot
Backup runs successfully every night.
Once server is rebooted first backup fails, then subsequent backups succeed OK.
So much so that we run the backup manually and let it error (pretty much straight away) then let it run again successfully at 10pm.
Backs up to external hard drive on rotation.
I think it's a VSS issue - has anyone else had this? What did you do to resolve?
Thanks,
J.Hi,
According to the Event ID 521, please refer to the following article. you will get detailed explains.
Event ID 521 — Backup Operations
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734453(v=WS.10).aspx
Based on all error messages that you provided, it seems that backup issue caused by sqlwriter.exe. So, please
temporarily disable SQL Server related services and then check if this issue can be solved. It will help us to confirm if this issue was related to SQL Server.
Meanwhile, would you please let me know if you have installed available update rollup for your SBS 2008 Standard?
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

While trying to update from reader 8.1 to readerXI, install has failed 5 times after getting an error message that 8.1 is using files that need to be updated (it is not running): operating system is windows xp, version 2002. Do I need to uninstall 8.1 before trying to update, and how can I be sure that XI will install correctly and not leave me holding an empty bag if I do this and the download still does not install
I always recommend to uninstall old versions when upgrading and skipping versions.
If you have difficulties uninstalling, use http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html -

Any guidance would be very appreciated! My little MacBook has been a very good machine up until recently. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Logical System Conversion after system refresh failed
Hello,
Logical System Conversion after system refresh couldn't complete as the printer was locked. This job was run in the background. In SM37, the job log of RBDLSMAP shows as job finished, but it took only 40 seconds. Now I see that the logical system got changed(Converted) in the client settings scc4 but I know that this client being a production client and would run for couple of hours. Here is the job log information.
02/18/2009 16:09:33 Job started 00 516 S
02/18/2009 16:09:33 Step 001 started (program RBDLSMAP, variant &0000000000000, user ID ABCD) 00 550 S
02/18/2009 16:09:33 Output device PRN1 is locked in the SAP system PO 349 I
02/18/2009 16:10:19 Job finished 00 517 S
When try to rerun bdls again, it shows that it is already available and it says "The new logical system name is already assigned to the current client".
Any suggestions on this?
Thanks,
MaheshHi ,
Rerun the BDLS again as this took very little time.
When you try to run again it popsup message saying it already exists just delete that and again put the Logical system name and run it will run that time.
May be while scheduling the job you gave for spool I am not sure why is it looking for Printer which is locked.
Thanks. -
I used scripting brigde to add a movie that has size bigger than 5GB, exactly after two minutes iTunes return a failed, but the processing of the file is actually added to iTunes Library successfully. The copying take more than 5 minutes to complete. Why the iTunes Scripting Brigde returned failed when it is actually success? It occurred exactly 2 minutes after submit the request to Scripting Brigde. Is this 2 minutes related to the Apple Event time out? if it does, how do I get around this problem? thx
I can tell you that this is some of the absolutely worst customer service I have ever dealt with. I found out from a store employee that when they are really busy with calls, they have third party companies taking overflow calls. One of those companies is Xerox. What can a Xerox call center rep possibly be able to authorize on a Verizon account? I'm Sure there is a ton of misinformation out there due to this. They don't note the accounts properly or so everyone can see them. I have been transferred before and have asked if they work for Verizon or a third party also and was refused an answer so, apparently they aren't required to disclose that information. I spent a long time in the store on my last visit and it's not just customers that get the runaround. It happens to the store employees as well and it's beyond frustrating.

I have a new issue with all DPs.
When I pxe boot, it will boot into WinPE but then it will fail and reboot after the step: “Preparing network connections”
I have tried reinstalling the DP and MP. Also redistributing the boot image.
When I press F8 to go into debug mode, ipconfig show me an IP address and I am able to ping my Management point, my DHCP server and also my Distribution point.

This has nothing to do with your MP or DP though so reinstalling them won't make any difference.
This error is indicative of network issues -- basically, the "client" is not getting a response back in a timely manner (and probably not at all). Assuming the MP is healthy though, then only other piece of the puzzle is the network.
You can try setting the SMSTSAssignmentsDownloadRetry and SMSTSAssignmentsDownloadInterval task sequence variables in the boot image to increase the client's tolerance for latency or other weirdness in the network. This has worked for many.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to break out a sniffer and watch the traffic to see what's going on at a network level.

Extensions like Ghostery, WOT or AdBlock stop working after two or three times. Restarting the webpage in a new tab the extensions will work again for several times and then stop again. Has anybody an explanation or a workaround for this bug in Safari 5?
Remove the extensions, redownload Safari, reload the extensions.

And if you really want a better experience, use Firefox, tons more choices and possibilities there.
Firefox's "NoScript" will block the Trojan going around on websites. Best web security you can get.

Transport change request to two clients at the same time
Hello all,
we have two clients in QAS system - 600 and 700, now the extended transport control has been setup, once we release a TR in DEV system, there will be two entries in QAS import queue, one for 600 and one for 700, I would like to know whether there is a way to import this TR into QAS (both 600 and 700 client) at the same time, that is to say, just one import action imports the TR into both 600 and 700.
Currently we have to import one by one, click the entry for 600, import it, and then click entry 700, import it.
Thank you.
Best regards,
FreshHi,
If you want to transport each and every request which is released from Development into both the clients, better schedule transports in both the clients every 1hr/with some duration. Then system automatically imports the requests into target clients without any user intervention.
Delete all the transports which are "ready to be imported" from Quality queue before you scheule the job!

Nick Loy
