Clone An Existing RDBMS Installation Using OUI

Hi All,
We have multiple databases running on Oracle 9.2.0.6 ( Linux 2.6.5-7.282-bigsmp #1 SMP Tue Aug 29 10:40:40 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux)
we were asked to upgrade few instances to 9.2.0.8 .
Our plan is to clone the existing 9.2.0.6 home directory and upgrade the cloned copy and the required databases to 9.2.0.8.
I checked the following article to clone the database ORACLE_HOME.
Note:300062.1 -How To Clone An Existing RDBMS Installation Using OUI
I also found some known issues and bugs with this process.
I would like to know your experiences and suggetions using this aproch.
Thanks in advance for your help.

The best approach depends on which instances you are planning to upgrade. If all the target instances belong to the same Oracle Home, then just open your maintenance window and apply the patch to the oracle home and to each instance belonging to this oracle home.
If only some of the instances belonging to the oracle home are candidates to be upgraded, then clone the oracle home and upgrade it, and upgrade only the instances you are going to move to this cloned oracle home.

  • RDBMS installation: new group or existing group?

    Hello,
currently we are installing Oracle 11gR2 on several new standalone servers. As suggested by Oracle, we create the user oracle as a member of the group oinstall. So far, so good...
But we are have a couple of older servers with already existing Oracle rdbms installations - and these were created with the user oracle but as a member of the group dba.
Now we want to install 11gR2 onto one of those older servers and are not really sure, if:
    - we should create a new group oinstall and install 11gR2 with this group
    - we should install 11gR2 with the group dba
If you look into the filesystem, Oracl 9i is installed under /opt/oracle/app/oracle/product/
    drwxr-xr-x 13 oracle dba 1024 Sep 19 08:47 product
11gR2 will get installed under /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3 and could look like either
    drwxr-xr-x 13 oracle dba 1024 Jan 18 08:47 11.2.0.3
    or
    drwxr-xr-x 13 oracle oinstall 1024 Jan 18 08:47 11.2.0.3
The question is, if a mix of groups is possible or if it makes more sense to keep the old group dba...
    Any help will be appreciated...
    Rgds
    JH

    Hi;
For our installation we always use dba group, because we have more than 300 db. Oracle recommended to use different group for security, manage etc. But If you have case like us We prefer to go wiht single group
You can see more details in installation guide

  • Using OUI for installing custom products

    Hi All,
I want to use OUI to install a custom product that I have developed. So i have some doubts regarding that...
    1. Can OUI be pointed to a new Products.xml file which contains the details of the new product installation.
    2. Is there some link, documentation, APIs to do that?
Any sort of help is appreciated as it is crucial...
    Thanks,
    SaurabhS

    HI user784664
I'm afraid that you can't do that. Products.xml can be use to perform silent installed, When prompted by OUI, locate products.xml in the installation source directory:
    i.e connectors/framework/10.2.0.2/1.0/source/Disk1/stage
Oracle Universal Installer to install Oracle products in any of the three following modes:
    * Interactive:
Use OUI's interactive mode to use the graphical user interface to walk through the installation, providing information in the installation dialogs when prompted.
This method is most useful when installing a small number of products in different setups on a small number of machines
    * Suppressed:
Use OUI's suppressed mode to supply the necessary information by using a combination of a response file or command line entries with certain interactive dialogs. You can choose which dialogs to suppress by supplying the information at the command line when you invoke OUI. This method is most useful when an installation has a common set of parameters that can be captured in a response file, in addition to custom information that must be input by hand.
    * Silent:
Use OUI's silent installation mode to bypass the graphical user interface and supply the necessary information in a response file. This method is most useful when installing the same product multiple times on multiple machines. By using a response file, you can automate the installation of a product for which you know the installation parameters.
Herewith the detailled documentation about OUI:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/em.102/b16227/toc.htm
But may be a request via metalink it should be possible to get more details about that question. Oracle is using the OUI API for Grid controller, CRS, ASM and RDBMS so why not with your product.

  • Best way to clone an existing drive, then clone back to a dual SSD Raid 0 setup?

Have a Mac Pro 5,1 (mid 2012) and want to install 2 SSD drives in a Raid 0.
Will attempt to use the Apple Disk Utility to set up the raid. any suggestions on this first part will be welcome!
But what is the best way to clone the existing SATA drive onto the Raid setup?
The 2 SSD are Samsung 84 Pro 256 GB units, installed on a Temp SSD Pro 6 Gb SATA PCIe card.
    The OS is Mavericks 9.1.
    Thanks !

Always no matter what, have a clone or three - clean, working image, last version before OS X 1.2.3 that you are about to install.
It is about INSTALLING OS X, not updating once you have it - though updates and security updates are known to be monkey wrenches too at times.
Never remove safety net, no matter how safe it seems.
Use a clone to run DU and repair the drive, the drive partition, it handles both (partition integrity was new to Lion), AND to invoke TRIM command when repairing (which won't happen in recovery partition mode of DU).
CCC does a smart update. You don't worry about applying updates to those, and in fact wait a few days before applying updates sometimes, or just make sure the clone is up to date so you can boot from and do a restore if needed. A system restore image is only as good as knowing it will work in an emergency should one arise.
Like to see people break ground on new projects and how to get more out of their systems.  The 5,1 does not have the  limitations or issues that even the 4,1 exhibited let alone even more for the Early '08 3,1s.
One good SSD alone should / would / make more improvement in performance for low investment than any I have seen.   If you have the Tempo Pro card and 2 x 250GB 840's that is about $600 investment   - throw in another system SSD and use the Tempo for scratch and/or Aperture and insure you have "more than enough" RAM and your workflow should be smooth.  Even wtih that, which I call "best practices" the nMP 6.1 makes Aperture etc even smoother as everything is optimized better and the 1200MB/sec SSD and 4-channel 1866 DDR3  makes  graphics smoother and respond instantly to your touch (sports car handling vs your sedan?)
After doing a lot of installs, upgrades, Migration Assistant; and then on a 2-4 week basis boot from another volume to run DU Repair.
OS X alone without the cache used and other things on the boot drive really only takes 40-160GB and makes it easy to create a DU sparse disk image for CCC to update and restore from and that can be kept anywhere. And have a small 200GB emergency maintenance boot volume that you can add to and create on any volume you have handy, shrink and add to that 2TB media drive or  TimeMachine drive volume.
I would just set aside half an hour weekly or as needed to clone your system. Than clone again before you apply anything, system update or update to applications or new applications.
With all your personal data and media and projects not on the system you don't need a RAID0 array to hold as much data, no need for the added complexity or using two SSD devices, easier to maintain and restore. There is even a small added overhead to  any  RAID. With an 840 EVO 500GB just above $300 it makes a lot of sense to use those, and almost too big for a system  drive. Fine if the system drive is not just OS and applications but media and stuff don't need to be there. Again, Aperture/Lightroom and other uses, yes and with t he new Mac Pro  people are putting and using it for multiple purposes and uses that they would not have wtih the 2012 5,1 and earlier. But it is so fast it makes sense - and Thunderbolt 2 external storage has added more costs to storage.
Kind of got long winded, hope it proves helpful. And not confusing but may raise more questions and ideas.

  • Autopopulate archiso from an existing archlinux installation?

(not entirely sure this is correct forum section for this, but it's at least closely related)
has anyone created a script to automatically populate archiso with the relevent data extracted from an existing arch installation?
so you can basically clone your current setup to an iso file, ready for live use as cd or usb.
or are there scripts that bypass archiso and can independently create a nicely squashfs'd/lzma'd  iso, automatically, from the current installation?
    ... i want a "and-the-monkey-pushes-the-button" solution.

I was looking for the same, so i made a
    pacman -Q|cut -d " " -f 1 >packages.list
but to my 'bug' surprise, mkarchiso is unable to locate any pkg i installed from aur.
Is there a way to tell mkarchiso to use local packages?
    -EDIT-
I've tried to create .pkgs via bacman and put them in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, but still not avail:
    #> bacman caps
    #> mv caps-0.4.4-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz /var/cache/pacman/pkg/
    #> make all

  • Installing new internal hard drive.  How do I safely clone my existing BOOTCAMP partition?

I have a 13 inch Aluminum Late 2008 MacBook.  Processor 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53).  Currently I have a 160 GB SATA disk as my hard drive a d 4 GB of memory.  (Is it time to upgrade or what?)  I recently bought a Western Digital 1 TB internal hard drive to replace my exisiting internal hard drive.  I spent a lot of time last night trying to first- connect this new hard drive to my computer so that I can then clone the existing hard drive and then hoping that I would get that done so I could install the new hard drive.  No such luck.
My current hard drive is partitioned as follows:
    Name:  Macintosh HD
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Size: 132.5 GB
    Name:  BOOTCAMP
Format: Windows NT File System (NTFS)
    Size: 26.69 GB
When I was partitioning the new drive I did so as follows:
    Name: Macintosh HD
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Size: 973.51 GB
    Name:  BOOTCAMP
Format: MS-DOS (FAT) ---  This was the only option that I was given that I thought would work.  I did not have the option of "Windows NT File System (NTFS) to choose from.  Question # 1: is that going to be a problem?  I only run 1 program on Windows and that is the only reason I have BOOTCAMP on there at all.  However, I do HAVE to have that program.  Like I said it didn't give me the option to choose Windows so I didn't know where to go with this.  Any help with that would be awesome.
Size: 26.34 GB  (I just used the same size that was current, or close to it.)
I connected the Western Digital 1 TB through an external device, partitioned it as stated above, and then used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drives.  The first one went through fine.  (It took 2 hours and I went to bed before it finished.)  This morning I woke to see that it had gone through well.  I then started the process with the BOOTCAMP drives.  However, before I started it gave me errors stating that I wouldn't be able to run Windows off of the Cloned BOOTCAMP drive.  Question #2:  Is it because of the Format type I chose when partitioning?  Or something else?  I am unsure where to go from here.  I would really appreciate any help that is out there.  I would love to get this new drive installed ASAP.  Thank you so much in advance!

Well yes and no.  I succeeded with the clone.  All of the information seems to be there.  However, it isn't showing in the system preferences - start up disk -- as a start up disk option.  Therefore I assume it didn't clone correctly, or at least not in a way to use it the way I was.  I am thinking it may be a better idea to just run Parallels or a similar software program.  I rarely use the software that has to run in Windows.  And maybe that will be the easiest way.  I think I will still have to change the way I have it because I assume if it isn't running as it was before now I must have done something wrong.
I am unsure of where to go from here.  But know that I really do appreciate your help.

  • How to clone my current arch installation to a VM?

    Hey,
I would like to clone my current arch installation to a VM to test if awesome runs with my settings. I thought about making an rsync image and importing it into the vm.
Has anyone tried this before or do you have any recommendations?
    thx 4 help

    Hi!
Take a look at this Blogpost. There is an description how to create a disc image ponting to an real harddrive.
VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename rawimage.vmdk -rawdisk /dev/sda
Warning:The downside of that approach: The disc image is actually linked to your harddrive, so any change in your VM will affect your host-system.
But I've found another useful command:
    VBoxMange clonehd rawimage.vmdk realimage.vmdk
This will create a copy of your linked image. It seems to me, like the copy of the linked image is a *real* vmdk-image.
Of course this comes without any warranty - I did not test it: Please be very careful using these commands. But it seems to me, like this approach could be a solution for you.
    Sincerely,
    brb

  • Larch-4 testing, can also 'livify' existing Arch installation

I've uploaded a testing repository for larch-4 to:
    ftp://archie.dotsrc.org/projects/archie/larch/testing
It has some added features which need testing - especially with USB, which is difficult for me to test because my computers are rather old and don't support USB boot.
It should now be possible to adjust the session-saving behaviour without modifying the larch scripts - additional scripts (hooks / event-handlers, call them what you will ...) can be placed in a 'scripts' folder in the root directory of the boot device (using the profile mechanism) to adjust loading and saving of overlay files. Initial description (sorry, it's still rather sketchy) in the session-saving doc page.
The home directory is now a separate sqf (not overlayed).
Added options to mklarch to build a CD/USB-stick from an existing Arch installation. This can be done, for example, from a live CD (using the -x option) or even from the system itself while it is running (option -X). This could be rather dangerous - don't do it on your main installation. I've tried it out - without obvious damage - on a test installation, and it looked quite promising, but be careful.
Added option -r to mklarch to ensure regeneration of base and system sqfs when 'reusing' an installation (with options -b, -x, -X).
Changed the place where the live CD is built (default /home/larchroot) and the structure within this folder. The installation is now made directly to this location and the building is done in subfolder .larch, where the final iso also lands.
To use it, just copy the larch-setup.sh script to an empty folder and run it (as before). Then you have the new mklarch set up and ready to go.
    Feedback welcome.

Hi gradgrind, this tool is really what I'm looking for. I have 3 partitions: /dev/sda1 -> swap; /dev/sda2 -> reiserfs (partition where my system is installed); /dev/sda3 -> reiserfs (partition where I'm running mklarch script). I want to try larch but I have a few questions.
    1) To create a LiveCD from my current arch setup I only need to  run
    ./mklarch -X
If you're running the system you want to save, yes. But from your description it sounds like you're doing something else. Do I understand correctly that you have some other system unrelated to sda2 on sda3 and you want to run mklarch from sda3? And what you want to livify is sda2? Then you need to do something like:
    # mount -o dev,exec /dev/sda2 /mnt/sda2
    # ./mklarch -x /mnt/sda2
    Note the small 'x'.
spookykid wrote:2) Is it possible to add gensplash to larch?
Sorry, I have no idea about gensplash. If it's supported by Arch then it should work with larch too, but it's not something in which I have any interest.
spookykid wrote:3) For what I've read about larch I can have a system installed with 4 GB and that will fit on a 700 MB CD?
I hope I didn't write that. You might need that much free space to build a 700MB CD, but a more accurate estimate of what fits would be about 2GB. If you want more you'll need correspondingly more free space and a DVD or a large USB-stick.
spookykid wrote:4) Larch will only go for my /dev/sda2 partition (where i have my system) or will it add all available partitions to the live image?
It just packs up what it finds at the mount point, so if you've got other stuff mounted within the system (I guess in your case you probably haven't) don't be surprised if it tries to pack that up too. I think (I hope!) it ignores stuff mounted within /mnt and /media, but I'd have to look at the code again to be sure. For people who have /home or /var or whatever on separate partitions it is necessary to mount these before running mklarch.
If you use 'mklarch -X' (big 'X') to build a live CD from the currently running system, all the mounts should be ok anyway, but I think that in general building from a separate system, as you seem to want to do might be slightly safer.
In any case, please back up anything important before running mklarch - just in case! It runs as root and could do all sorts of nasty things. I don't think it will, but don't blame me if it feeds your grandmother to the ravenous bugblatter beast of Traal

  • Lync 2013 client installation using SCCM

    Hi everyone,
I have been performed Office 2013 installation in my domain. For this puprpose, I used SCCM 2007 R3.
At the beginning I customized this installation using OCT. I have excluded Lync from my Office 2013 distribution package, because we use Communicator Server 2007. Afterwards, I found that it is possible to use Lync 2013 with OCS 2007: http://www.technipages.com/lync-2013-fix-cannot-sign-in-because-the-server-version-is-incompatible-with-microsoft-lync-error.html
How can I silently deploy Lync on workstations, which already have received Office 2013 without Lync? If I simply  try  to add Lync feature in my package using OCT, silent installation stops on "Add/remove/repair components..." (which,
we, of course, cannot see during a silent setup).

You could utilize Config.xml to deploy Lync client. This will make installation silently.

    Hi Juke,
Thanks for you answer. But actually not all is clear for me. In this article, I can see this:
"By default, the Config.xml file that is stored in the core product folder (for example, \product.WW) directs Setup to install that product. For example, the Config.xml file in the following folder installs Lync 2013:
    \\server\share\Lync15\Lync.WW \Config.xml"
But in my Office 2013 installation folder, the Lync.WW folder does not exist.
Should I create it (and Config.xml too) manually? Can I remove other folders like Excel, Word from Office2013 installation folder?

AFAIK, there is NO compilation of Apache on the win32 platform. If you use Vista please verify that it is certified to install SOA Suite there. Another common pitfall is not reading the installation guide and using computers with DHCP....

    Item or object?
For "Object already exists" or "Access denied" errors when installing try opening Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates then checking for Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2918614). Uninstall if you have it, then reboot and try installing again.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
