Contour HD POV H264 (29.97 1280x720/59.94 848x480) into PAL DV25/HDV 50i?

I've been desperately looking for lightweight simple to operate, integrated all in one recorder/battery/bullet camera POV, to be attached on crash helmet for multi cam event motorsport production, and I'm beginning to think I've found one in the ContourHD, and it's affordable enough to risk crashing.
However and here's the thing it only records in NTSC, and they have no plans currently to develop a PAL version, consequently I have the prospect of working with SD files at 59.94 frames per sec 848x480 or HD 1280x720 @ 29.97, and I have 8 other cameras shooting 1080 50i, and I'm multi clipping either as DV PAL or Pro Res HDV 1080 50i.
Now before I jump in and purchase, anybody using the ContourHD, any problems, I can find precious little in terms of 'expert' reviews on the web, more the gadget press? So anybody trying to incorporate Contour footage in PAL land, any "gotchas" that have left you stuffed? Or are converting the Contour footage in say MegaStreamClip to PAL frame rates, before bringing it into FCP?
If no one has experience of this, I've just downloaded RAW files from their website and dropped them both SD & HD files and although they need rendering to play once in FCP, FCP does they seem to be able to convert them, with a little scaling, can I assume they won't present FCP any other issues? I'm particularly thinking further into the DVD workflow, the far side when rendering out assets in Compressor to DVD Studio Pro? Will I fear see rendering artifacts or degradation or frame dominance issues? I of course appreciate that the footage won't be able to join the DV footage in a multiclip, but take it that I can lay this POV clip on the next video track above the multiclip,as I've done with broken clips, cutting in the shots I'd like, and render?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Short answer it does work and you can actually just drop the footage into a timeline although it requires rendering to play.
Alternatively Mpegstreamclip can convert it to any flavour you like.

  • Trouble exporting any mov files into H264 after adding K-Lite codec pack into Windows XP SP3.

I have QuickTime 7.7 (1680.34) installed. I have used it extensively and exported the video separate from the audio and extracted and used filters and it has all worked great with all of the other codecs I have had installed. It even worked great after I recently installed this K-Lite codec pack that actually saved files in a *.hdmov file type and I was able to view them with the Media Player Classic .... (I have Windows XP update 3)  and see what I could do over there and then go back to saving them as *.mov file types and work in QuickTime Pro. And still export them relatively fast to their latest H264 format.
I gave more file types to the Media Player Classic. I think along the line of the just the *.3g2 and *.mp4 and took them away from QuickTime but still keeping the *.mov, *.qt and *.mqv  file types .... and that is when I think everything must have changed.  all of a sudden I can not save any *.hdmov files and the export process in QuickTime takes longer than forever.
I thought that I had reconfigured Media Player Classic back to its default ....
and it should all go back to being how it was.
Is there some Direct Show filter or codec that upsets QuickTime Pro ... that I might have not reset back to what it was?
Any codec help would be much appreciated.
This is what the K-Lite site says in one instance about H264:
If the video that you are playing contains H.264 video, then you could try using another decoder. The codec pack by default uses ffdshow for decoding H.264 video. This is a free and open-source decoder. Other decoders exist that have better performance as ffdshow. They should give you smoother playback, specially if you have a dual-core or quad-core processor.
    Alternative H.264 decoders are:
CoreAVC. This decoder is unfortunately not available for free.
DivX H.264 decoder. This decoder is available for free as part of the DivX Bundle. Tip: disable everything in the bundle except the H.264 decoder.
ffmpeg-mt. This is an experimental multi-threaded version of the libavcodec decoding library, which is used by ffdshow. You can select ffmpeg-mt as decoder in ffdshow video decoder configuration.
MPC DXVA H.264 decoder. This is an internal decoder of Media Player Classic Homecinema. It uses your graphics card to perform most of the decoding process, resulting is a very low CPU usage. You can enable this decoder though: MPC Options -> Internal Filters. Note: this decoder has some specific requirements.
I downloaded the DivX bundle and will pull out that codec. I bought the CoreAVC for $13 but Norton said it was a risky file when I downloaded it ... (I have a question into the site about that) and I will try the ffmpeg-mt codec as well as see what they say about the last one. I will also try to undo everything I did that happened I guess before QuickTime started to export so slow that it is not even worth it to try and convert a mov file into H264.
Sorry so long ... I just was trying to lay out the things I have attempted, will attempt to try and improve the situation.
Thanks again very much if anyone makes it thru this ... geez .. sorry.

    Hello Tim,
I decided to do a clean install, a fresh new installation of windows and all its updates, I didn't get the option of
    install SP1 yet.
After that I only installed Catalyst drivers: 11.5 and Realtek HD audio drivers, all downloaded on May 24 2011.
Then latest FFDShow and MPC-HC to test, both x64 versions Nothing else installed.
Only a fresh copy of windows with its updates and those mentioned drivers.
To my surprise, it happened a gain.
It still crashes after a while when playing MKV videos.
It's weird, because it doesn't happen with avi's or mp4's.
So, there must be something wrong with one of windows updates that creates this windows FREEZE.
Also there is no possibility to find out what error it is in "Event Viewer" as nothing gets recorded there. Anyone could
    advise?
    Thanks

I purchased a Contour Roam head cam that shoots .mov files in h.264.  iMovie '11 does not recognize the files for editing.  Help, please!

I found this in the Contour Roam manual.

+ Connect the camera to any PC or Mac using the supplied USB cable.
+ The camera will mount as a generic storage device.
+ Navigate to the mounted device.

  • H264 MPEG AVI import video timeline problem

    Hi,
I am a new user of Adobe Premiere CS4.  I am having a problem of importing H264 MPEG AVI files.  I set my project to be HDV 720p 30fps.  I grabbed Gspot and it has identify my video is a H264 codec name H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.  When I import the video I setup the timeline and when I do a playback review in the far left window (default setting).  It play the vido super fast, but the audio is playing normally.  I zoom in the timeline and it seems to think each second is one frame.  So it is playing the video like 30x speed(not 100% on how much faster, just lot).  What am I doing wrong?
After playing around some more, it looks like the video are keyframes as the time jump from frame to frame is huge, not what it look like in a WMP.  Did I somehow imported and it stripped out the deltas?

I looked at the thread and tried it, I get this error.

  • SmartView on Planning forms - Putting POV in cells

    Hello
Is there any possibility to put actual POV values into Excel cells from the toolbar for SmartView sheets based on Planning dataforms? We need to keep POV values in sheet when copying SmartView report into another sheet (disconnected from Planning).
    Thanks in advance

After connecting to Planning smartview connection check below thing in Smartview>Options
    1. In Formatting option Use Cell Styles is selected.
2.In Cell styles option Planning and Common options are selected.
If Cell Style option is not selected then you won't be able to see planning formatting.

Anybody out there solved this issue? Thanks =)

Hello, I have the same problem: Shoot on HDV 50i, edited in HDV sequence and exported in H264.
A lot of problem with lines on fast movements, wrong field sequence... I solved the problem deinterlacing the sequence before exporting in H264. But maybe a stupid question: It is not possible to leave the sequence interlaced in a H264 conversion ? Or H264 is only progressive?
The trailer on Quicktime movie trailer are very good at 10,5 Mb bit rate... not the same for my Clip !!
What kind of conversion they are using ?
I tried also with compressor but seems to me that the conversion engine is the same (same panel, same set-up, same results).

  • H264 with AC3

    Hi,
I would like to export my FCPX HD videos using H264 video and AC3 5.1 multichannel audio in an appropriate container.
The reason why I am not using AAC multichannel audio is because:
    - AppleTV does not support true multichannel AAC decoding (or transcoding to DTS, as recommended by the DVB);
    - DVD or BlueRay burning software do as well not support multichannel AAC (just performing downmixes);
I made tests on Compressor doing seperate H264 and AC3 encodes, then mux'ing both components into one MP4 stream. Unfortunately, although QT, VLC as well as ATV can decode the stream, no disc burning software will accept this 'non-standard' component combination.
    My questions:
    - Is there a possibility within compressor to combine H264 video with AC3 audio in a appropriate container ?
    - Is anybody aware of a DVD or BlueRay burning software capable to handle multichannel AAC as true multichannel (whether as discrete PCM channels or as an AC3 transcode) ?
    - Are there plans that ATV4 will properly support AAC multichannel (whether as discrete PCM channels via HDMI or as a DTS or AC3 transcode via optical audio interface) ?
    Thank you

I think I found the solution:
I inspired myself on the iTunes format .m4v which allows the combination of H264 video with AC3 audio.
Consequently there are several ways to proceed:
    - export via FCPX using ProRes 422 and 5.1 PCM linear audio, then ecoding to H264 and AC3 using e.g. handbrake;
    - export via FCPX trhough Compressor using seperate encodes for H264 and AC3, then muxing both compoents into a .m4v file using a mux tool such as Subler.
.m4v is indeed recognized by ATV, as well as by DVD/BD bruning software such as Toast.
a few points thought which I would recommend Apple to considered:
    - Compressor should allow to directly create a .m4v file with H264 video and AC3 audio (currently not possible)
    - Quicktime should be updated to correctly display within inspector the status of the AC3 decode. Indeed, presently quicktime will decode a 5.1 AC3 but will display it as a 'stereo' audio, which is not correct and misleading. VLC shows for instance the correct Dolby format...
    - it's a pitty that iDVD does not support AC-3 passthough or a transcode for AAC to DTS or AC3, because multichannel audio is quite standard for DVD's and most MAC users will have video files with multichannel audio.
    - ATV should support multichannel decoding of .mov files using multichannel AAC, whether via discrete PCM channels on the HDMI interface or via a DTS (or AC3) transcode via the optical audio interface.
    Thx and best regards
    Steve

  • New AME "pass-through" for .h264

I have a question regarding Adobe Media Encoder's new "pass-through"capabilities with H.264. I am working on a long documentary. I have hours of footage shot on Canon H.264 .mov files. and I have .WAV audio recorded separately. The audio is usually one clip covering several video clips. Ideally I would sync the files in PP, get the audio levels correct, cut out all of the unusable bits and export as a fresh .h264 file that I will then take into Prelude for text transcription and creating sub clips. Then back into PP for final editing. Will the new AME's handling of .h264 files keep my video from being recompressed? Is  there better way that I might not have thought of? Thanks in advance, Chip

Is  there better way that I might not have thought of?
    I think so.
Skip Prelude and just do it all in PP.

  • Sequence preset for multiple format of clips

I have sources coming from 3 AVCHD camcorders and one GoPro HD:
    AVCHD source #1 is 1920x1080/50i
    AVCHD source #2 is 1440x1080/50i
    AVCHD source #3 is 1440x1080/60i
GoPro HD H264 source is 1280x720/60p
AVCHD footages have been transcoded to ProResLT codec during the Log&Transfer.
H264 footage has been transcoded to ProResLT codec with MPEG Streamclip utility.
My aim is to use all these footages, to get a final output to be displayed on the web/computer screen. So, ideally, I'd want progressive. What would you suggest as a sequence preset, or as additional pre-work before starting editing?

The GoPro footage is meant to be slo mo, right?
I believe this workflow will provide the sharpest image before compression for the web.
Your project will have the following Sequence Settings:
ProRes LT, 1280x720, 25 fps, Square Pixels, Field Dominance - None.
Convert all of the footage except the GoPro in Compressor to those specs, using Frame Controls to de-interlace and downscale. Be sure to change the frame Rate in the Encoder tab, Video Settings; and change the resolution and pixel aspect ratio in the Geometry tab.
In Cinema Tools, conform the frame rate of the ProRes LT GoPro to 25 fps.
Make sure all audio is 48 kHz, 16 bit.

  • Broadcast quality, not quite there....?

Looking for some advice from the powers that be! I have been editing for web based stuff for years and had a client that wanted me to do a TV commercial. After upload to HD TV, ABC Network it looked ok, but not what I wanted.  I will explain my workflow and please tell me what I should do different...
Sent spot in H264, 59.94fps, 1280x720 as requested by network.  Shot the footage in 29.97 1080p, converted with Mpeg Streamclip
-After I saw the spot on HD TV the color was off which I can change, needed to lower the saturation. I am editing on a Macbook Pro (new Mac Cylinder shape computer with thunderbolt monitor on order).  Do I need an external such as a TV, to edit on so that I can see the outcome as it will be on TV??  What is my mode of operation here?
-Next, there is a curb going up a road from bottom left to top right of the screen, so the curb is diagonal, but there is very tiny lines that run horizontal (left to right) on the curb..?  Wondering if that is a "deinterlacing" problem?  Will it fix this if I choose the deiinterlace function on Mpeg Streamclip?
-This sort of pertains to the above question.  My graphics, letters, where the "S" is in the words on screen they look kind of like the curb I described above?  In other words if it is not vertical or horizontal line it appears to be broken on TV.
As a side note EVERYTHING looks perfect on the web version! Not bad on TV, but not perfect... Please advise??  Thanks in advancequality

I don't use a broadcast monitor so I'll let others who do address your color question.
As for the image artifact, there shouldn't be any interlace combing if it were shot progressive. But from your description, it does sound like interlaced. What's the camera?
Wondering whether it was progressive shot in an interlaced stream and FCP isn't reading it correctly.
Also, try a custom test project set to 720p. Bring one of your 1080 clips into FCP without reformatting in Streamclip.
Export the clip as a Master File. Check for artifacts in QTX.

PS, If you used one of the Web presets, they automatically de-interlace.

  • Share presets for youtube share option

Hi all, I´ve done a search over the net and haven´t found anything.
Does anyone know which presets applys share when you choose youtube option?
I´m working with some footage recorded with a contour 1080 hd cam which is 1280x720 60fps native, done a video file with this preset and uploaded to vimeo but I really don´t like very much the result, doesn´t seem to behave well fast screen changes and movement on old computers (even with hd off enabled on vimeo)

    Tommyvincent
What did you set as the Premiere Elements 11 project preset? See what it says under Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and there for Editing Mode, Timebase, and Frame Size. I suspect it is 1080i.
I am almost certain that you are operating from a 1920 x 1080 16:9 @ 29.97 interlaced frames per second project, but without confirmation on that not 100% sure.
Assuming that you are at those settings and you are not seeing any black borders in the Edit Mode Monitor,  then
    Publish+Share
    Online
    YouTube
with the Presets = High Definition Video for YouTube 1920 x 1080.
    Think about
Also, when after I choose the Preset, I get the Google form in which to insert my Username and Password. This is not the same as the Username and Password I have to sign in to YouTube. I thought a YouTube form would pop up.
Since this is an upload to YouTube, I would think you would use your YouTube ID and Password. The way that I have set this up for myself is to have YouTube, Google, and GMail all linked. That takes care of everything. So, see what happens with just your YouTube ID and Password and then we can decide what next on that. (I am assuming that you have separate ID and Password for Google and YouTube).
    As for
since my video is in Spanish with all the metadata I will insert in Spanish too (title, description, tags), will YouTube accept that? I registered with YouTube in English. Will I have to reregister in Spanish?
Not sure about that. I doubt it, but not sure. From what I have read, say your video is in English, in the upload process you can add tags for other languages such as Spanish, French, etc. I will give that a try and see what that looks like.

  • Issues with WMV HD Editing & Newbie Questions

    Hi,
I am new to PE7, so apologies if some of these have been asked b4, I searched but couldn't come up with direct solutions.
I mainly edit HD WMVs, raw HD videos and MPEGs, to be used on PCs and on the internet. Most used output would be HD 1280x720(wmv).
I am having problems with HD WMVs in PE7, they don't seem to play smoothly for editing, clipping etc(choppy and jumpy are the words that come to mind). At first, I thought this was a memory issue( I have 3 gigs on a Vista computer with a Dual Core processor), but then decided to try editing a couple of  HD MPEGs (same size) and these played smoothly, allowing be to make precise splits etc.
What would be the best setting for editing WMV HD files(as I said, mainly 1280x720 input and output)? I tried the HD and AVCHD settings(when starting the new project), no joy. Is there some way to tweak PE7, or adjust the settings when editing WMVs, or in general, is it best to import MPEGs?
Next question  - I am going to be doing quite a lot of editing over the next few months. Do people find Vista or XP more stable to use with PE7 and Premiere Pro and how much memory would be best for optimal perfomance? If I have to get an XP PC for editing, then that's what I'll have to do. Right now, I'm trying out PE7 and I'm sure I'll have to upgrade to Premiere Pro in a few months, so please bear that in mind.
Any other suggestions, tips and useful links, greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

PE7 handles HDV MPEG2 natively... so if you look at a clip on the timeline it will have no line above it, if you look at a HD WMV file on the timeline it will have a red line above it. For the HD WMV file to play back smoothly on your computer (depending on how "beefy" your computer is) you will have to hit the Enter key on your keyboard to render the clip. After rendering the clip will play back smoothly and have a green line above it.
If you are editing 1280x720 HD WMV you could use the HDV 720 30p project preset... however whatever project preset you use you will always have the same need to render the clip.
PE7 and PPro works well with either WinXP or Vista. For editing high definition video I would go with 4G RAM (well your computer will only be able to access 3.2G+ of the RAM). More important is the processor, especially if you venture into editing AVCHD. A fast Quad core is ideal.

  • What are the best sequence settings in FCP 5 for exporting screen capture video footage?

I capture video footage of websites in order to showcase in a demo reel. Using Snapz Pro, the compression type I have found to have the best quality is H264. When I take this footage into FCP (v5.1.4), I choose DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting. If I then select H264 for the sequence compression type, when I go to render I get a 'Codec error.'
The only way I am able to render properly is by choosing DV NTSC 48khz for the sequence setting and DV/DVCPRO-NTSC as my sequence compression type. The problem with this though is I get a perfect picture in the Viewer, but the picture quality in the Canvas (and the subsequent exported video) is slightly blurred.
I've been trying to find a solution to this problem off and on for years. I've finally decided now to get to the bottom of the issue. If you can solve this one you are my hero!
    Ted

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried using DVCPRO HD in the past, but the picture quality of the captured screen footage turns out blurry. The only codecs I've found that provide a perfectly clear image are H264, Animation and Uncompressed 8-bit. The problem with the latter two is that video files lasting only a few seconds measure in the 100s of MBs. Working with files that large would slow my editing and rendering down to a non-workable length.
I just don't understand why I can't edit H264 video if my sequence codec is set to H264. The 'Codec error' I get is baffling.
