Cracked hinge on my PowerBook

The hinge is cracked and I was holding the screen in place with tape until I inadvertently closed the cover and now my screen doesn't work. Any suggestions on how to get this fixed?

post a link to the hinges you are referring to.

  • Cracked hinge on PowerBook

The hinge is cracked and I was temporarily holding the screen in place with tape until I inadvertently closed the cover and now my screen doesn't work. Any suggestions on how to get this fixed? It's cracked on one side and the wires are pulling apart now. Thanks for any suggestions.

When the hinge breaks on titanium powerbooks, the system should be repaired as soon as possible, since it can break some of the wires in the hinge. If these wires break, the high voltage inverter current can get to the logic board, which is not fun for anyone, least of all the logic board.
If it still works with an external monitor, that's great. You should stop using the machine and have it repaired. Have a look at these links for information about repairing the hinge and inverter cable and decide if you wish to do it yourself or if you want someone else to:

If it doesn't still work with an external monitor, take the hard drive out and throw the rest of the powerbook in the bin. Ok, I'm being overly dramatic - it can still be repaired, but it may require a new logic board as well as a new screen and hinge, which is overcapitalising on a TiBook these days..

  • Cracked hinged of Macbook mid-2010

The Macbook mid-2010 has an expired warranty, both sides of the hinge has a hairline crack. I called Apple Customer Service this afternoon and said that I can have this fixed but I have to pay for it. Is it possible to just bring this to Apple then just add a little amount in exchange for say an MBA 11" 64gb? I hope Apple will consider a global recall for this product, they could at least give a free repair. Anybody with same problem?

ok, I brought the Macbook to a Genius Bar (2hours drive), they said that they won't replace the Macbook nor give a free repair since it's out of warranty, their charging me $200+ (forgot the exact amount, maybe $280+) for the repair. It's so expensive, so I decided not to push through and the guy from the Genius Bar advised me it is not worth it to pay that amount for a small crack, he also said to use it more often and let the crack get bigger Apple might replace the whole unit for free if the crack is big enough! I hope Apple will recognize the problem so there would be a global recall or replacement of the Macbook mid-2010.
By the way, this is the image of the crack on the right side. There's also a smaller crack on the left side.

  • How much does it cost to replace a cracked hinge cover?

The black plastic hinge cover on my Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011 is cracked. How much does it cost to get it replaced at and Apple Store? Is it cheaper if I provide the new hinge cover? (they're on Amazon). Don't want to do it myself as you need to disconnect the screen, HDD, webcam, etc...

Apple will use their own parts, not parts you provide.

  • Macbook pro cracking at hinge

My Macbook pro (bought in november 2008) has started to crack!! It seems like it's getting worse... It looks just like this:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/141840-new-unibody-macbook-pro- cracking-hinge.html
Do you think Apple will replace it?

I have the similar problem but my local official apple store told me that it wasn't cover by warranty. They said they could not find any existing case or documentation on this problem thus it is not manufacturer defect and I will have to pay $1100 if I want to fix it.
I would be grateful if you could give me some information regarding this internal document you are referring in your post, so I can find out more and go back to them with this internal document. Thank you

  • Powerbook g4 right hinge broken pink wire broken...

well as the title states the right hinge on my powerbook is broke, and theres a pink wire broken. my screen is not viewable at all unless i put a flashlight to it. is this an easy fix at all...if i take it into a repair shop? just wondering if its worth the $ to fix.

It is not a trivial repair, since you report a broken wire.  The right hinge of the Titanium powerbooks carries the cable from the inverter to the backlight, so if your book is a Titanium model, that explains why you have no backlight.  Hinges themselves can be replaced.  I just swapped both hinges in my slightly older unit with the not-inexpensive steel replacements from Powerbook Medic.  We'll see how they hold up, compared to the aluminum originals.
With a broken wire, though, you are looking at replacing the inverter cable, which is even more involved than replacing just a hinge and might involve some serious disembowelment of the machine, as otherwise you will be likely unable to actually get the cable fished through the back of the upper case.  This was my "older" TiBook just before replacing the display about five years ago.  Note the important off-camera location in the blue arrow.
The situation can be handled, but not without serious effort.

  • Preventing Hinge Cracking

I bought my MacBook in 2010 and I have had cracking on the hinge point on the back of my display. I have had it replaced already but I need to know what I can do to prevent to cracking. Help??

I am happy to have seen this about the hinge cracking. I bought my MAC BOOK PRO in 2008. It started cracking, with a hairline, almost immediately. I brought it in. They said it was not a problem. I have been to APPLE for other issues at least one a year for the past few years. Each time, I mention the cracked hinge, with gets worse in time and each time it is ignored.
Now it is so bad that it is beginning to flake off. I love this lap top and have always had it attaced to a large monitor, so it is seldom moved. Can anyone suggest what I can do? i still feel that APPLE should have replaced this when I first went to them with the brand new laptop.

  • Lenovo G570 - Open and Close

I have an issue with my G570. I purchased it around August of 2011, at the start of school, and around September, I noticed that every time I opened or closed the computer, it made a little cracking noise.
It stopped after a while. Today, it began doing that again - until I noticed that there is a crack on the left-side hinge of the laptop.
I don't know whether I should tape/superglue it. As it isn't that big of a defect,  I could ignore it for now, but it could lead to later problems with the screen and I really want to resolve this now.
    Thank you!

Hi nsahn1 and welcome to the community,
It will eventually break completely.  You need to get it fixed right away.
It's tough to get cracked plastics and cracked hinges replaced under warranty because those problems are usually attributed to user error.  I would make a call to service and see what they say.  You probably should have taken care of this back in Sept. when it first happened.  It would have been easier to get warranty for it.
Let me know how you make out.

  • HP Pavilion DV6 2190us Since November constant display blackouts & freezes

Seriously, I will never ever pay $1000 for another pc and I will never ever buy another HP product.
Hewlett Packard was my gold standard, but not anymore!
To begin, a month before my one year warranty ended, the fan on my pc went out and the laptop would
not let me access my files.  I was in the middle of college finals.
HP customer service said that i could pay for express service and there was no way I could have someone
else replace the fan because it was INTEGRATED.
He assured me that I would get it back with a turn around of 4 days so I could get to my files for my college classes.
What happened?  I get a call telling me that it will cost me $300 because I have a cracked screen.
I said it was NOT cracked when I had it.
The guy told me that he would send me pictures of it which he NEVER DID!
Bottom line.  I did NOT pay $300.  So what did I get back?  A laptop with a cracked hinge that was not cracked
    when I had it.
And an icon on the desktop that was labeled "old files"
    and was EMPTY!
All my computer files were NOT reloaded.
I called and what did the various reps I spoke to say?
Oh, well, there's NOTHING YOU CAN DO.  THEY"RE JUST GONE!
    Wow, what great service!!
I will spare you all the gory details of what I had to do to complete my college classes.
It left my hands with a severe case of carpel tunnel and I couldn't pick up anything or use them for over 2 months
because of all the typing I had to do to re research TWO 22 page essays that were due within 2 weeks...all thanks
to the idiot that did not reload my files.
And the whole purpose of paying express fees to get it done was to get those vital files back.
It also killed my 4.0 gpa I worked very hard to maintain for 5 years.
Since November, the laptop has had continual blackouts.  Sometimes it recovers, other times it remains black and
keeps running, other times it goes black and stops running or goes gray.
The USB ports are dysfunctional and sometimes I boot up and the optical mouse works on one port or the other or
neither.  Sometimes it works for awhile, then stops and the finger pad works but finally craps out, too.
Every time I boot up, it is like a different laptop and I have to check the power settings, the USB ports, update the
    mouse drivers,
    It's a mess.
It may crash in 5 minutes or 5 hours.  It's always a different time frame.
But it is a given that I have to turn it off and reboot...sometimes several times.
I can't depend on it for the next semester of college, so I am going to purchase a new laptop
    NOT an HP product.
The Nvidia display drivers...I've tried them all
    They all suck.
Why the mouse and USB ports ares dysfunctional, I don't know
Why the power settings change when I reboot, I don't know
At first, i thought it was internet explorer 9
And resetting it seems to work, but only for awhile.
In fact, everything I try to correct all this stuff seems to work...for awhile.
I've probably rebooted this **bleep** thing over a thousand times since November.
I was so desperate that I tried restore image to factory settings
As soon as it rebooted, the screen froze.
This has been the worst experience I've ever had with a computer.

    Thanks, 'cat!
I did buy a Seagate 2 T external drive that was on sale at I think Best Buy.
I read that other people had the same problem with other hinged laptops
The thing is that the guy who called me after they got my laptop express told me that the MONITOR
was cracked and he would send me pictures
I said the monitor wasn't cracked when I had it!
then he went away and came back and said the the hinge was cracked
I told him it wasn't when I HAD IT!!
I inspected it before I put it in the * box.
They just wanted $300 and didn't want me to skate with getting a fan replaced on my warranty
I think HP technical is very corrupt.
I do not trust any of their phone representatives.
The girl in India who told me to take a screwdriver to the bottom of the laptop was an idiot
I rebooted a few times and it finally booted itself back up again
That was about 4 months after I got it.
    Thanks!!

  • T400 troubles

I'm having a vast amount of troubles with my T400. And by troubles, I mean hardware issues, since software problems can be easily fixed by myself.
Here's the specs on my ThinkPad:
Model 2764-CTO (bought through Lenovo Canada)
    - C2D T9400 @ 2.53GHz, 6MB L2
    - ATI HD3470/Intel GMA X4500 hybrid graphics
    - 2GB DDR3, 1 DIMM
    - 160GB 5400rpm HDD
    - DVDRW
    - Intel Wifi Link 5100
    - Integrated BT
    - Webcam
    - Fingerprint reader
Yes, I'm sure I have all the latest drivers already, I'm pretty sure what's just happened to me is a hardware issue. When I'm using the integrated Intel GMA on my T400, I can see plenty of red pixels covering the screen - not in one giant block, but only in certain places, almost like artifacts in appearance. It's only present when I use the Intel graphics, and is much more visible when the machine is cold, as in resuming from suspend after being in suspend for a few hours or from a cold boot after it's been sitting for a few hours. This problem is not present at all when I am using the discete ATI graphics.
What troubles me is that Lenovo support wants me to send it in to the depot for repair again. I don't wish to, given the newness of this notebook and the troubles I've had with depot repair in the past with this notebook. I've already had the motherboard replaced once because of a fan or controller failure - I'm pretty sure it was a controller failure as I spent three weeks with an extremely loud T400 that kept on alternating between high and low fan speed. It took nearly forever to fix my notebook and ship it back.
So right now I'm trying to escalate to someone who can actually help me to get decent service on this T400. I will admit that this is fairly self-centred, as I'm only entitled to depot warranty, but I am 15 years old, and what teenager isn't self-centred? If possible, I'd like a new machine with upgraded specs as compensation for my wasted time, or an upgrade to 5 year onsite warranty with the ability to further extend so I can get proper support when the machine breaks (I've now accepted hardware failure as a fact of life... pretty sad.) I, myself, definitely think that I deserve a new system or better warranty because of the troubles I've been having. See the below timeline:
    Timeline:
    08/21 - Order system
    09/05 - Shipped
09/17 - Received (time spent waiting for machine: 28 days)
09/19 - Fan/controller problem shows up (time spent with a good working machine: less than 2 days)
09/20 - My first call to Lenovo support
After my first call, my case has to be recreated no less than 4 times before I get sent an EZserv box
    10/02 - EZserv box shipped
10/09 - EZserv box received (time spent with a defective machine: 21 days)
10/09 - I ship my machine back in the EZserv box
After it gets to the depot, it takes many calls about the status and a call to the manager before the machine is fixed and sent back to me.
10/22 - I receive the machine again (time spent without ThinkPad: 14 days)
11/23 - Graphics problem shows up (total time spent with a good working machine, counting my initial 2 days: 34 days)
11/24 - I call, and have been trying to get hold of a manager ever since. (time spent with defective machine and counting: 23 days)
As you can see, I've been waiting for a good machine a lot more than I actually have been using a good machine. I've "had" the machine for 71 days so far, not counting the wait before that, but only 34 of those days have been with a good working machine. The other 23 I've been dealing with a defective machine, and for 14 days I haven't had a laptop at all!
I bought the T400 because I've had good experience with ThinkPads in the past - I've had the pleasure of owning a used T21 and a used R50e. Both were great machines; quiet, well built, reliable. The performance didn't meet my requirements anymore, so I decided to finally splurge on myself and buy myself a good ThinkPad - one that would last me through to at least the first or second year of university.
I bought it because of the good specs on paper.
I bought it because my friends have enjoyed their Lenovo-manufactured T61s, as the ones I've seen were every bit as great as the old ThinkPads manufactured outside of China (not that I have anything against products made in China; I'm Chinese, so I see absoutely nothing wrong with things being made in China so long as the quality control is good.)
I bought it because I thought I would be getting a business-grade machine, like my rackmounted Dell PowerEdge 860, which has been running almost 24/7 from day 1 and is still going strong, with 453 days of uptime now.
The aforementioned splurge cost me the majority of my personal savings, and what do I get? A machine that doesn't perform half the time. This is not what I expected from a ThinkPad. This kind of unreliability is not what I want, and it's not what I need either. I also have no more money left to buy another notebook. If someone at Lenovo is reading this, please consider either of my two suggestions: 1) give me a new notebook, with better specs or 2) give me 5 year onsite warranty. At least give me a callback, so I can decide what I should do.
    /endrant
Sorry, that ended up longer than I expected. If anyone from Lenovo wishes to contact me, PM or email will do.

    Hi Richard,
I joined because I just needed some place to rant - hopefully I can draw the distinction between ranting and trolling, as neither are particularly desirable on forums, but the latter will bring a ban upon me. I also hoped to draw the attention of some Lenovo employees.
I think the answer to my situation lies in point #1 and #2 in your post - I got a lemon, and I've always been unlucky when it comes to notebooks. I managed to kill my T21 by CRC1'ing the motherboard by turning it off while it was POSTing - foolish on my part, as a BIOS update would have prevented that. Then when the R50e came to me, it had a cracked LCD and I replaced it. Cost me something like $120 for a used panel, and I was decently happy with it after that. Then the hard drive died, likely because it was already damaged from the shock that killed the LCD, and since it was too big for my tastes anyway (it was a 15" model), so I bought a used Dell Latitude D600 for $200. It worked fine for a while - then structural failure - frame cracked, hinge snapped into multiple pieces - maybe it was because it got bounced around in my suitcase on a flight within mainland China? In any case, even though that thing had a magnesium alloy frame, it was far too flimsy compared to my prior ThinkPads. I ended up basically epoxy'ing the frame back together and buying a new screen hinge for it. It still functions, but I lent it out... which is why I don't have any spare machines to use while my ThinkPad is gone. I thought my ThinkPad would be different - and it is, in terms of structure, it's pretty much the most solid machine I've ever used - but I just seem to be unlucky and always have things fail on me.
I bought mine for almost the same reasons as you did - long battery life, solid reputation, and power (video encoding flies with the T9400.)
As for #3, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.

  • Crazy Screen, When I pick up PBG4

PB is fine while left on a table, but if I pick it up to put on my lap the screen starts to go crazy with verticle & horizontal lines, also whenever I open a new window lines go away until I move it again, I can minimize then maximize and lines go away as long as I keep it steady. any ideas anyone

Hi, L.A. J. You have a loose video cable connection or a damaged video cable. The former is much easier to correct. I'm afraid the latter is more likely.
The video cable — a bundle of extremely small coaxial cables full of almost hair-thin conductors — passes through the left hinge of the Powerbook. It connects to the logic board in an easily-accessible location right near the hinge on the underside of the board; you need only remove the Tibook's bottom cover to get at the connector and disconnect and reconnect it. The cable's connection to the display panel is far harder to get at and much less likely to be loose.
If anything has ever happened to the Tibook's left hinge to distort the opening through which the cable passes, that's undoubtedly where the problem lies. Even if the hinge is completely intact and as good as new, the problem may still lie there. The extremely delicate cable can chafe against the metals of the hinge and its cover and wear through the thin insulation on any of the wires in it, causing problems that often include the kinds of anomalies you're seeing. The likelihood that you'll be able to a) pinpoint the damage, and b) reinsulate any damaged conductor and get things working normally again, is pretty small, and you'll have to take the Powerbook completely apart just to try it.
Actually replacing the cable involves disassembling the display too, and that's all glued together because it isn't made to be disassembled at all. Apple technicians never do so. It's a much more labor-intensive and therefore a more expensive job to pay a technician to perform than replacing the whole display assembly, which includes the LCD panel, video cable, sleep light and cable, backlight and cable, front and back bezel halves, hinges, sleep magnet and upper latch half. That's the Powerbook's most expensive part, and dismantling it yourself is the hardest and fussiest repair job you can undertake on a Tibook.
So check your video cable's connection to the logic board by disconnecting and reconnecting it, and hope for the best. Let us know how you make out.
Take-apart instructions are here. Be sure to use the specified screwdriver types and sizes: they really are required.

  • Why lock a perfectly innocuous post about a broken PowerBook hinge?

    Very odd.
Some chap below said that his hinge had broken, that Applecare told him to take it to an Applestore to get them to determine if it was warrantable, but set his expectation that he would spend $500 repairing a 2 year old machine that he did not break.
He asks for advice, mentions that he's furious and the topic is locked.
Seemed like a perfectly reasonable thread to me. Just wondering what terms justify locking that particular thread and stopping that poor chap getting advice from the Apple community.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for the response. I Can't say I agree with your points at all.
    a) Forum for technical problems only?
    This is what Apple say on the subject;
"Apple Discussions is a user-to-user support forum that enables anyone who uses Apple products to meet and discuss various topics, resolve issues, ask questions, get tips and advice, and more".
If what you say about technical problems is written somewhere, perhaps you could point us to it.
Seem to me that he had a mechanical problem, completely legitimate.
He asked for advice on how to deal with the issue he had. He got advice. Nobody told him what to do - when I make a post, usually, the post allows me to decide if I want to mark it answered. His was locked. Doesn't that strike you as a bit strange?
His original question expressed a bit of frustration at being told he'd likely have to pay $500 for what he considered a hardware failure or design fault. He wasn't rude, profane or unreasonable in what he originally wrote, otherwise he wouldn't have got replies.
His follow up to the advice he got was to tell us what he was going to do and to promise to keep us posted.
"Odd thing was I had just used it right before it broke. I simply Opened the screen in the upward direction and heard something almost like a crack. Didn't think much of the noise and when I opened it to its upright position it had broke. That simple. No force whatsoever. Thats the most upsetting part. It's simply rediculous. If this has happened and Apple has received repairs specifically this type, the lightbulb should go on and say, "Hey we have a bunch of people with the SAME EXACT PROBLEM going on here. What can we do to rectify the problem and fix this." It's a simple recall just like what they did with the batteries. Enough people complain and something gets taken care of. Anyway, thanks for the luck. I am taking it to the Apple store this weekend to have them look at it. I will post my experiance as soon as I can. Hope this helps people who have had the SAME problem as me. "
Doesn't sound like whining, sounds like he was going to do something about it and like he wants a resolution to a legitimate complaint in an expensive 2 year old machine. A pretty reasonable response to the advice he got, I thought. He actually went to the trouble of explaining how he experienced the fault as he said "to help people who have had the SAME problem as me"
There are loads of posts here which have been going for months and months asking questions and debating issues - e.g. the Powerbook lines issue for example.
I'm just struggling to understand why someone has locked this particular post. I don't agree with your assertion that the poster is merely whining or has had his problem solved.
    So for the moment I am still wondering;
Why lock a perfectly innocuous post about a broken PowerBook hinge?

  • White Macbook Unibody Hinge cracks?

    Hi there,
I purchased my macbook back in 2010, as you call might be able to tell it is way out of warranty, but just after it was out i took it in to apple store Birmingham for another issue i had with the software, the Genius then noticed that the hinges of my laptop screen had cracked and told me that i could have the screen replaced free of charge. To this i was very happy becuase i thought it might have been something i had done.
Now a little more then a year on the same thing has happened, 2 hair line cracks have appeared again in the same place as the first one. so i took it back to the store again where i was once again that they would replace the screen free of charge.
Now i know that they are going/done this free of charge twice now, but i am a little concerned that it will just happen again in the next 6-12 months and ill have to make another trip to the shop.
has anybody else had this problem where they have done anymore then just replace the screen??
    Thanks
    Tom

Ohh fair enough, thats good then.
and i had am idea that it might be three times, to get a replacement, (i had a problem with a old laptop that had to happen 3 times and they gave me a new one)
well this is the second display i will be having, if it happens again ill be ringing them up and asking, even though i don't have extended warranty do you reckon they will still talk to me?
I had one that was out of warranty when I brought it in to the Apple Store and the Genius that I took it to, I took it because my hinges broke and the screen didn't line up properly on the computer when it was closed.  I had to pay for that which I was expecting because it was out of warranty.  However, while I had it in there, and while I was talking to the Genius, he noticed something that was broke that was common and that they knew about, and they took care of that while it was in there free of charge.  While it wasn't a screen, it was a MacBook that had the chipping around the screen and around the top plate of the case, they took care of it free of charge.  The replaced all those pieces, put in a new keyboard, and a new trackpad all with the top cover as well.  When I got it back, it was like a whole different computer.  It was nice to get the customer service like that.
