CS5 Mac playback issues

This is a baffling problem. I have a fully updated Premiere CS5 installation on a Macbook Pro (4,1), created an HDV project with the DVCPRO 720p24 preset, and proceeded to import the MXF files from my Panasonic HVX200P camera.
Once the files are loaded, I can see the clips, add them to the timeline and scrub through them. However, when I attempt to play them back at normal speed, I can only see 2-6 frames of playback from the starting point before it stops. I was able to blind-edit some clips and the exported file came out fine, but not being able to preview the project from within Premiere is kind of a deal-breaker.
After further inspection, this issue is not limited to the Panasonic files. SD and HD H.264 MP4 files exported from both Premiere and FFMPEG have the same problem.
Does anyone know if this issue is fixable?

Never mind, I fixed it. It turned out to be a permissions issue, which makes no sense at all. If anyone at Adobe is reading this, please tell your dev team that if a user has permission to read a file, they should have permission to play that file. Thanks.
If anyone else has this problem, here's what I did to fix it:
Open Terminal
Type the following commands:
cd /directory/your/project/and/media/files/are/in
chown -Rv yourusername *
chmod -Rv a=rwxrwxrwx *
Enable root user (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528)
Log in as root user
Open the project file
Save the project file
Log back in as yourself
It should be fixed.
I would have used the Disk Utility "Repair Permissions" feature, but for some reason it was grayed out for this drive.
Thanks to daniel.hyblak for tipping me off to the solution. Here's his post: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2985085#2985085

  • Premiere Pro CS6 Mac Playback Issues

I've searched for similar issues, and while I found plenty of playback issues, I didn't see anything like what I'm experiencing.
    MacPro Quad-Core Xeon 2.26 x2 (8b cores)
    12 GB ram
OS 10.6.8 (can't update this due to other infrastructure)
    Nvidia GeForce GT 120
    FAST Fiber attached SAN
    Local Raid0 media drive
I know the GPU isn't compatible with the Mercury hardware acceleration.
I've been a Premiere Pro user since version 2 and have kept current through the years.  I'm happily running CS5.5 on PC's in my home office.  I recently installed the trial version of CS6 on my Mac at work to evaluate for that environment, and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get over some basic issues.  I have no problems with Media Encoder or AE.
In Premiere using preview or program (timeline), playback stops after roughly a second...  though it varies by several frames each time.  I tested this with various video files, .wav files, stills (jpeg, psd), etc.  I even tested with black video and bars generated inside Premiere.  The problem persists with all of the above...  click play, and playback stops after about a second.  Scrubbing works great...  I've tried different playback resolutions.  I'm not using any 3rd party monitoring devices or I/O cards on this machine.
I have FCP 7 installed on the same machine and have no trouble editing and playing 1080i video all day long.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

The above suggestion worked for me briefly, but the problem keeps re-occuring.
I too am using Snow Leopard 10.6.8, NVIDIA gfx card (8800) and an ATI Radeon 5500.
Premiere played back fine in Lion and Mountain Lion, but I downgraded because I have old quicktime files and Final Cut 7 projects that i need to work with so Lion is not an option for me.
Bizarre behavior if you ask me.
    Any help on this?

  • CS5 Audio Playback Issue

I can't get an audio file to play for longer than 1 second without stopping.  Don't see anything in any setting that would affect this.  Any ideas?
I just installed Soundbooth CS5.  I opened a mono, 9 minute mp3 file, 32000 Hz, 4.36 MB. I have tried other files of different specs with same result.
I'm on an iMac, 3.33 Ghz, 8GB running OSX 10.6.3.

I'd just like to add my experience, which I hope will be helpful.
I, too, had the problem described having downloaded and installed the Soundbooth CS5 demo. I've seen the other posts on this issue and searched, using various methods (including simply navigating to the library/preferences folder (tried both the root directory and my user directory) and I can assure you that com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist was NOT present on my Mac (MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 8GB RAM running OS X 10.6.3).
Following your TechNote, I logged in as root and started Soundbooth. Everything worked ok and when I logged back in under my usual user account com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist was present in my preferences directory.
It might be useful to point out in the TechNote that the second step should be taken if the com.apple.audio.AggregateDevices.plist file ISN'T PRESENT in the preferences file. I spent ages trying to locate it using Terminal, File Buddy etc. before resorting to the 'root user' solution because I'd read a note from 'durin' in one of these threads saying that, 'that file definitely exists or you wouldn't have any audio devices working at all!' This wasn't the case with me.

  • Stuttering flv playback issue- need help asap

We need help asap. Have a project is due to deliver today (5/14).
We have a video to go on a dvd-rom, live action with Motion Graphics behind.
When output is done thru Projector the Motion Graphics stutter as they scroll.
    Here is more technical info:
    Stuttering flv playback issue:
Prores 422 timeline 29.97fps 1280x720 output from fcp using current settings.
Mov file is approx 7gb, plays relatively smooth on a mac pro with no raid.
Frame by frame analysis shows all frames are present with no jumps tears or skips.
Tried several output paths, programs and settings to create a smooth flv file to no avail.
We adjusted data rates from 2k, 3.5k, 4k and 8k, no luck
We adjusted keyframe rates from low to all frames, no luck.
We tried cs3 flash encoder, cs5 media encoder, squeeze ect, same results.
Playback in the flash projector seems to choke slightly no matter what we do.
Have also posted in the Director Forum.
    Any help much appreciated!

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head:
Try playing the file using a different xtra, sometimes different ones will work better.  If you have Director 11.5, there is a native flv playback xtra.
You can build a player easily in Flash using the flvPlayback component, then bring that into Director as a swf.
Once you have the video in Director, try making the member Direct To Stage (DTS).  If it is already DTS, try making it not DTS.
Make sure the video is not transparent, and nothing in Director overlaps the video... in fact, when the video is playing, nothing should be moving at all, and try to keep the amount of code that is running to a minimum.
Try lowering your video's data rate further or try using a different codec.
Using VBR (Variable Bit Rate) compression often makes the video appear to play smoother.
Try compressing the flv with different software.  FFMpeg, for example, is free and does a very good job, often better than the Flash Video Encoder that comes with Flash/Creative Suite.

  • Weird Playback Issue...

I have this weird playback issue with iTunes for Windows. I am using Vista and I think the cause of the problem is that I am using MacDrive to access my OS X partition. But anyways, on with the problem. So the problem is that when I play a song, the song will play for like 5 seconds and then it will just go the next song. This song will do the same thing, and so-on and so-forth. Then, during this time, my Mac formatted hard drive is unavailable while iTunes is running. In "My Computer" the drive is there, but when I try to open it, Explorer freezes. Then, when I exit iTunes, it doesn't really exit. It still shows up in the task manager and when I try to end the process, it just plain doesn't end. I have to restart my computer to gain full use of it again. After the restart I can access my Mac disks, but once I start iTunes and try to play a song, I get the same thing again. And in case thats not weird enough, I can play the MP3's in WMP fine, and they will also play in iTunes fine if I actually open them, rather than just select them from my library. If I go to file open and select a song on my Mac drive, it will play fine, but then once I try to play a song from my library, I get caught in that vicious cycle. Anyone else had this problem or anything? Thanks. Also, is there an alternative program to Mac Drive that will allow me to read HFS partitions?

Post more about your situation... what format is the video, and where are you storing the video files? i.e., on a disk other than your startup disk? The adobe install is likely not the problem... I run adobe software along side FCS on about 75 workstations, and don't see issues like you describe.
Wavy? not accurate? what are you talking about?

  • Playback Issues with multiple framerates and Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme

I recently swapped by AJA Kona Card for a Blackmagic Decklink 4K Extreme in order to get external monitoring in DaVinci Resolve.
I'm working in a 1080p 23.976 project that includes some 29.97 SD and HD footage. When loading this 29.97fps footage into my source footage, I periodically encounter frozen playback (The play triangle in my toolbar becomes a square symbol and remains that way). From there I am unable to playback any footage in any timeline, and requires a full system shutdown to return to normal! The problem is seemingly intermitent, with successful playback happening sometimes.
The 29.97 footage was DVCPRO, I attempted to transcode to Prores to troubleshoot. No dice. I believe it to be an issue related to the Decklink's inability to handle multiple framerates on-the-fly but wanted to submit here, too. I've also experienced intermittent sync delays on my broadcast monitor.
    Decklink Driver 10.0
    Premiere CC 7.2.1
Mac OSX 10.9.2 (same problem pre-mavericks)

    Hi Andy,
You should not have any issues with Blackmagic handling multiple formats on the fly. However, I believe the frozen playback issues your describing is related to the Desktop Video 10 driver. I suggest rolling back to 9.3.3 for the time being. Blackmagic is looking into this issue now.

  • ICanon C100 playback issue premiere pro cc 2014

I am having playback issues in Premiere Pro CC 2014 with footage shot on my Canon C100 (29.97 fps).  It was happening after doing a straight import and creating a sequence using "new item".  Then, after reading some other threads here and elsewhere,  I interpreted the footage so premiere would see it as progressive (no fields) rather than interlaced, but that doe not seem to help.  It is even doing it when I play at 1/4 resolution.  The only solution seems to be to quit and restart and reopen the project.  Then it works temporarily for a little while but not long enough to actually edit.  I have done projects in Premiere with C100 footage in the past and have not experience this level of difficulty.
My Media Cache is not going to the startup diskc(it is gong to the right place)
I am on a Mac 2.66 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    OS X 10.8.5
    10GB 1066 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
Please help - very frustrated.  If the solution is to transcode, it sort of kills the value of premiere in many ways.

    Hi,
    This might help :
Go to File > Project Settings > General and change the Video Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine software only. Click OK and select Delete Previews.

  • Playback issues - squishing in Premiere CC

    Hey All,
So I've run into this problem a couple of times. In the past, it has just sort of fixed itself, but now I'm having it again and want to know how I can fix it. I have a sequence that's been edited and rendered, however, during playback, the image gets squished in the playback window. If I stop playback, the image returns to normal (1920x1080 in this case). I found in past sequences that if I turn off my transparent layer that includes timecode, usually the playback is fixed. That is not the case with my current sequence though. Below is a screenshot of the playback issue along with my sequence settings:
I've noticed that if I take away any effects, like color correction or cross dissolves, and return the footage to it's "raw" form, playback will work fine. Obviously, that can't be done though...since I have dissolves and slides and whatnot involved with the cut. In the screenshot above, the cafe picture is composed of 3 layers (via Photoshop) on top of the video clip. I have also tried deleting all of my render files and restarting Premiere.
I'm working on a Mac (10.7.5) out of Premiere CC
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks guys!

Exactly what version of PPro CC are you on? If you're on  CC7.1, then you're probably hitting the issue discussed in this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5828335?tstart=30#5828335. That issue (which was specific to playback resolution being set to 1/4) was fixed in 7.2.

  • [bug?] playback issues with QT browser plugin, any workarounds?

I've noticed a playback issue with media files using the quicktime plugin (currently v7.1.3) with Firefox 1.5.0.x and now Firefox 2.0 on Windows XP (SP2):
    Description:
When I open a media file in a separate tab or window, audio playback cuts out when I switch focus away from the tab or window (i.e. when it runs in the background). When I put the tab/window in the foreground again, playing resumes.
    Reproducible: Always
    Steps to Reproduce:
    1. Open an mp3 file with quicktime plugin in a new tab
    2. Switch focus to some other tab or firefox window
    Expected Results:
Audio playback should continue in the background.
    Actual Results:
Audio playback cuts out and resumes once you click on the tab containing the plugin or if you hover over it with the cursor. The cutting and resuming out doesn't happen right away but after a short delay, suggesting that it might have something to do with thread prioritization.
The file is completely buffered by quicktime, this is not about connection speed or bandwidth issues.
Opening the link to the same file with right-click->Open Link in External Application works well.
Someone else has filed a bug report against Firefox about this issue here:
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339449
I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out not to be an issue with Gecko but with QuickTime.
Can other users confirm this on XP? Is this a known QuickTime bug? Are there fixes or workarounds?
    Windows XP

Yeah I had that thought as well but no joy. It works for the player but it doesn't solve my plugin problem. It really seems to be something about prioritizing, the way the audio cuts in and out - notice how it takes a few fractions of a second before a process loses its CPU cycles when you click away from it? You can observe this with System Monitor on the Mac or Linux or process explorer on XP. That's how the audio is cutting out and back in. I still think it's probably a bug/'feature' either with Gecko, the Firefox browser engine, or with the QT plugin..

  • Final Cut playback issues...help please!

I've been running FCP7 on my Mac Pro for over a year now with no issues.
Recently I purchased a pair of Dell U2410 Monitors to work on, and this is when I really began to notice playback issues in FCP. Although I just started noticing it with the new monitors, I have a feeling it is related to my FCP or my graphics card. The issue ONLY happens within FCP, video plays fine once exported.
    Specs on the machine:
    Mac Pro 3,1
2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    10gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 - less than 6 months old.
Here is a link to the video playback compared to the exported QT. As you can see there is some crazy horizontal issues with the video playback. It happens with all formats and resolutions of video.
I've tried trashing prefs and reinstalling FCP with no luck. It happens all over the area of the video, not just top or bottom. Sorry I had to film it because it's not visible any other way. This happens with files playing off my main HD and external drives.
Any help is greatly appreciated, it's really a pain to edit when the playback is like this. And no, I don't have Apple Care and am too late to get it:(

Are you using one of these computer monitors in a Desktop Cinema Display mode?
If so, this is not the way to monitor your material for any QC. You need a qualified device to export a video signal to a proper monitor.
You could use one the 2410s to see what things look like if fed through a Matrox MXO2 mini.

  • Merge to HDR Pro, Photoshop CS5 Mac

    Hello,
I'm using Photoshop CS5 Mac. When I select "File>Automate>Merge to HDR Pro…>" then Browse to "Adobe Photoshop CS5>Samples>Merge to HDR" and select the 4 jpg images, Photoshop merges the images and opens a window that says Merge to HDR (xx%) at the top.  Everything seems fine except the thumbnail images across the bottom are cropped off, their names and check box's aren't visible, and both the Cancel & Ok buttons are missing.
If I grab the window expansion in the lower right corner I can change the aspect of the window but the issues I'm having with the view do not change.  I can hit return and the system will generate the HDR image. Also if I select "About Merge to HDR" when the Merge to HDR window is open nothing happens.
Can someone tell me if there is a setting I need to change in order to get the window to view correctly or is this a coding bug?  I'm using an early intel iMac 17" with and additional Mac 20" monitor attached.  Mac OS 10.6.4, Photoshop 12.0 x32.  The iMac is set to 1440x900 and the Cinema Display is set to 1680x1050.
    Thanks for your time.

Here is the official KnowledgeBase document for the issue. Also, feel free to look at some of the other forum threads covering this (search: HDR OK Cancel)
Feedback on this workaround is appreciated.

  • Premiere Pro CC playback issue

I'm running premiere pro CC on a brand new mac pro, and am experiencing playback issues after rendering video. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens, but I do notice it when layering multiple video tracks. When the rendered video is playedback, it seems to drop frames in the program monitor. Essentially, it looks like a flicker effect has been applied, and the video will cut out rapidly, and a black screen with apear every other frame. This stops randomly, and normal playback resumes.
I've had this issue working with Red footage, Canon DSLR footage and GoPro footage... Footage type doesn't seem to affect it. It doesn't necessairly happen when a transition or edit has been applied... I can't figure out any sort of cause.
Any insight would be much appreciated.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Mac 10.6.5 not releasing memory

I have a Mac Pro running 10.6.5 Mac OS, 16GB Ram that I just installed today (had 8GB).  I opened up a rather large 11 minute PPro project.  I rendered it out.  Noticed that the Used Memory was getting larger, up to about 10GB where it leveled off for the remainder of the render.  After the render was done, the used memory stayed at 10GB.  I exited PPro, and it stayed 10GB.  Seems like it's not releasing the memory back to available or am I not understanding how either the Mac OS works with regards to memory or perhaps PPro?

Yes, that appears to be the problem. I disconnected my secondary monitor (which does have a different vertical resolution) and the eyedropper appears to function properly.
Okay, so now I know the cause of the issue. However, disconnecting and reconnecting monitors is not an acceptable workflow. Apparently this problem affects quite a few Premiere Pro CS5 Mac users with dual monitors since you referred to it as a know issue with all versions of Mac OS. Do you know if there is an update (not an upgrade) for Premiere Pro CS5 to address this?
    Thanks.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 - Mac Pro - The eye dropper color picker does not work properly

The eye dropper will not pick up on the colors that are hovered over. Instead, the selected color is offset. The best I can figure out is that I'm experiencing a vertical downward offset of about +/-150 pixels and a horizontal offset to the right of about +/-5 pixels.
Does anyone have the same issue and if so have you found a solution?

Yes, that appears to be the problem. I disconnected my secondary monitor (which does have a different vertical resolution) and the eyedropper appears to function properly.
