Decesion of Costing base COPA over Account base

Dear Gurus,
I have read the defination of costing based and account based copa and understood the conceptual part of it.
On what basis does a a particular business determines that whether they will have to go for  costing or account based copa or both ? In other words what are the parameter that I have to keep in mind before I suggest any of the copa method to the business?
Thanks

Hi
Costing based COPA is always preferred over Acct Based COPA (ABC), for the following reasons
Costing based vs. Account based copa (ABC)
a. Account based copa uses transaction tables and hence affects performance of CO transactions
b. Estimated values not possible in ABC (Stat Values)
c. Reports based on line items not possible in ABC
d. Actual Top Down distribution not available in ABC
e. Revaluation of actual data to plan data is not available in ABC
f. No key figure schemes are available in ABC
g. COGS breakup cant be achieved in ABC
Explanation on (b) - Using stat values, you can take tax values also to COPA.. i.e. you create a Stat cond type with 100% condition record on Sale Tax Cond Type... Hence, you can take tax values to COPA
If you use ABC, you cant use Stat Values.. And tax account being a balance sheet account cant be taken to COPA

    HI
Costing-based Profitability Analysis is the form of profitability analysis that groups costs and revenues according to value fields and costing-based valuation approaches, both of which you can define yourself. It guarantees you access at all times to a complete, short-term profitability report.
Account-based Profitability Analysis is a form of profitability analysis organized in accounts and using an account-based valuation approach. The distinguishing characteristic of this form is its use of cost and revenue elements. It provides you with a profitability report that is permanently reconciled with financial accounting

  • To activate costing based COPA while Account basedCOPA activated previously

    Dear all,
I have a client which currently using Account-based COPA which activated 5 years ago. Due to requirement to analyse production variance by variance categories, costing-based COPA needs to be activated.
Can anyone tell me whether is it possible to activate costing-based COPA in a system which have Account based COPA activated 5 years ago. If yes, is there any guiding SAP notes on doing this. As I would like to know the impact of such activations
    Thanks & regards,
    -Alice-

    Dear,
You can activate costing based COPA, for this use KEA0 and select your operating concern and select costing based COPA.
Then normal steps are required to be maintained like characteristic and value fields creation and all. Please refer the documents available online.

  • Account base , cost base

    hi sap gurus
can anybody clear me about the copa base of account base and cost base , and what are the differences for these both?
       regards
    venkatareddy

There are two ways COPA captures data
    . Costing based
    . Account based
    • Both use Characteristics to store the data abt info that is updates in COPA
    • Characteristics (Customers,Sales office,Sales grp,Material number,Strategic business unit,Co code,Profit center,Sales employee,Cont area,Prod hierarchy etc)
Main diff in how the 2 methods store data involves qty and values
    • Costing based stores values and qty in Value fields
    • Account based stores them in cost elements (accts) used in FI and rest of CO
    • Value fields group together similar values and qty
    <b>Costing based COPA</b>
1-Costing based COPA allows you to manage sales based on when sales docs update and when data is trans from FI and other CO modules
2- Normally the largest data trans to COPA is from SD billing docs
    3-Normal doc flow
            . Sales order
.Delivery (creates goods issue - debit COGS / credit Inventory)
. Billing docs (updates A/R, Sales revenue, Disc, Freights etc)
4-costing based COPA, COPA is not updated until billing docs are created
    <b>Account based COPA</b>
1-Allows users to reconcile COPA data to FI data
2-According to the accts posted instead of the value fields
3-Data mainly trans from billing docs again
4-Acct based COPA updated during the delivery and creation of billing docs and not
       after itlike costing based
    5-Normal doc flow
             1-Sales order
2-Delivery (COGS is updated in COPA here itself)
            3- Billing docs
plz assign point as way of thanks

  • Activating Account based Copa in the existing Cost-based COPA

    Hi Sap CO gurus!
Please advise me for the following issue.
Presently, My client using Cost-based COPA for segment wise reporting.( Already activated).
Now they wanted the reports in Account Based. Is it possible to activate the Account based now? Will the system allow us to activate or not?
If yes, What will be the implications? I want to know the pros and cons for that.
If not, How Can I edit the COPA settings( Operating concern)? Or shall I delete the Operating concern and create one new one?
Can you please explain the impact of each situation?
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Rama

    Hi Joe
You can deactivate Account Based COPA, but you will have to do a thorough testing so that you are aware of the issues that can crop up
The IMG Menu is SPRO > Controlling > Prof Analysis
You will have to do a testing of how the open sales orders would behave... The open sales orders mean Sales Orders where PGI has been done, but billing is pending AS WELL AS Sales orders which are just created, but no Logistics movement (PGI) has taken place... You will have to do testing on both types of sales orders
      - When you do PGI after deactivating the account based COPA, you may face error. Because, COGS GL account is a cost element in Account based COPA, where as in Costing based COPA, it is usually not a Cost Element
      - Also do a billing from an open sales order and see if you get any error there...
Similar issue can arise during variance settlement also, because the variance account is not a cost ele in Costing Based COPA.
Test out the above scenarios and do share your experiences

  • Partitioning on Oracle 8.0.6 (rule base vs. cost base)

At my current engagement, we are using Oracle Financials 11.0.3 on Oracle 8.0.5 which uses rule-based optimizer. However, it is been planned to upgrade the database from Oracle 8.0.5 to Oracle 8.0.6 as well as implement Oracle partitioning. With this in mind, we are concerned about possible performance issues that the implementation of partitioning may cause since RBO does not recognize it.
We agree that the RBO will see a non-partitioned table the same as a partitioned. In this scenario where you gain the most is with backup/recoverability and general maintenance of the partitioned table.
Nevertheless, we have a few questions:
When implementing partitions, will the optimizer choose to go with Cost base vs. Rule base for these partitioned tables?
Is it possible that the optimizer might get confused with this?
If this change form RBO to CBO does occur, the application could potential perform poorly because of the way it has been written.
    Please provide any feedback.
    thanks in advance.

If the CBO is invoked when accessing these tables, you may run into problems.
    - You'll have to analyze your tables & ensure that the statistics are kept up to date.
    - It's possible that any SQL statements which invoke the CBO rather than the RBO will have different performance characteristics. The SYSTEM data dictionary tables, for example, must use the RBO or their performance suffers dramatically. Most of the time, the CBO beats the RBO, but applications which have been heavily tuned with the RBO may have problems with the CBO.
    - Check your init.ora to see what optimizer mode you're in. If you're set to CHOOSE, the CBO will be invoked whenever statistics are available on the table(s) involved. If you choose RULE, you'll only invoke the CBO when the RBO encounters situations it doesn't have rules for.

  • 1 Operating Concern for Account Based and Cost Based COPA

    Hi,
We are using Operating Concern 3000 for Account Based and Cost based Profitability Analysis. However when i try to extract data from the account based Operating concern it gives me an error in extraction : error 09.
Could it be that we cannot use one operating concern for both types or COPA?
    Thanks

    Hi
Have you deactivated any of the characteristics used in Account based COPA
Check KEQ3 and you may have activated only for Costing based COPA

We're trying to implement both Cost based and Account based COPA at a client here.
I have some derivation rules maintained in KEDR.
When I'm trying to post a document in FI, the cost based COPA document is being created with the Characteristics populated correctly according to the derivation rules. However, in Account based COPA the characteristics are NOT getting derived.
Can some tell me if there could be something I've missed?

  • Cost of Goods Sold Accounts by Region

    Hi Friends,
While doiing the GL settings base on Item Groups, there is an option to set the Revenue Account based on Domestic.EU.Foreign.
Bu why is there no Cost of Goods of Sold accounts based on that.
Is Cost of Goods Sold account use for calculating gross profit. If so it makes sense to have a single Cost of Goods Sold.
Can anyone correct me if ia m wrong and please explain to me why  Cost of Goods Sold account is not divided in to Domestic, EU, Foreign.
Further what is the Expenses Account, in GL settings according to Item Groups, mean.
    Thanks & Regards
    Shiva

    Hey Julie,
We also need to use a different GL account for inter-company and I am wondering where do you setup GL account by warehouse?
Can you please provide the menu path or transaction code?

  • Cost of sales goods accounting

    Dear all,
We have different type of the sales order. At opm level we have accounting entries against sales order like this cost of goods "dr"  and finish product stock "cr". Now I have
created one more order type and want dr account (expense ) that is not cost of goods ,Mean I want to dr the account on the base of sales order type for sales order entry.
Kindly let me know how can I do that. Although cost of sales goods(account) is given at organization level. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    Hi all
Is there any risk in doing the account determination through User exit in such a scenario. I have found a user exit  EXIT_SAPMM07M_001 and include z_mm_exit_zxmbcm02_05 as useful instead of mapping the whole process for this transaction.
This user exit is working fine. Any risk people feel in bypassing OBYC through User exit.

  • Cost centre in the accounting document

    Hi all,
Can any one please let ms know, how the cost centre in the accounting document for a physical inventory adjustment is being retreived. In my scenario, the busines want to post the gain / loss from the physical inventory adjustment to different cost centre on the basis of valuation class and plant.
My understanding is that the cost centre will be retrieved from the OKB9 entry, where the cost centre will be assigned to a cost element. The same cost element will be assigned in OBYC configuration in the combination of the transaction key, val grp, account modifier and Val class. Can you please confirm my understanding and let me know the std account modifier that will be triggered for phsical inventory differences.
    thanks & regards
    Chaitanya Rayaprolu

    Hi
As far as my understanding, cost centre will not be attached to inventory gain/ loss account. We assign GL account for physical inventory differences in GBB - INV in OBYC which do not require a cost centre. Scrapping process requires a cost centre as it is a process loss but PI differences do not require cost centre assignment. We assign GL accounts (which are set up as cost elements) in OBYC settings for some postings like VNG, VBR etc which requires CO object assignment.
    Thanks

  • Excise duty costs in COPA

    Hi,
We are implementing COPA in an up and running application. As you are aware two accounting documents are posted during billing process. First document posts revenue and cost based on the sales order conditions to PA. There is another document is posted in CIN dispatches from a manufacturing scenario.
    Request your help for
a)second FI document accounts for excise duty cost. How to take this to PA?
b)second PA document will get generated. In this document how do we suppress quantity information. As both PA documents have same billing document and there by billing type. This avoids duplication of quantity posting. This cannot be done in initalizing as billing type is same.
c)how is it handled i.e. whether any user exit is used for this purpose.
    Please respond.
    Cheers
    Yesh

    Hi Yeshwant
THere is a std way of doing it.... Tax conditions dont usually post to COPA because balance sheet accounts are assigned to COPA
However, if you are using Costing Based COPA, there is a way to do it
    1. You will be already having excise condition types in SD Pricing Procedure, say, EXCS
    2. Create a statistical condition type, say, ZEXD....
    3. ZEXD will have a condition record of 100% based on the EXCS
    4. Map ZEXD to a VF in KE4I....
When VF01 is done, the excise duty will also be posted to COPA...
I have myself done this and it works.... No need to post to COPA from the excise document...

  • Shipment costs in COPA

    Hello,
We are trying to assign shipment costs to copa, we execute VI01
transaction and we do account assignment. It appears account assignment
fully completed but when we display the profitability segment there are
some of the value fields that are empty.
The fields that are empty are "Material", "Distribution
channel" and "Division", and all of them are filled when the SD bill document is
registered. I don´t understand why the system does not take them to the
profitability segment because they are fixed value fields.
We have checked that when we register vendor billing documents it works
correctly and all the fields have their corresponding value.
    Thank you very much
    Beatriz

Hi I was just looking at your post and  have a similar  situation .
Currently our shipment cost documet Vi01 is posting to a cost center .
Is there any way it goes to COPA directly  with all the billinig information
What are the config needs to be done
iis it just in OKB9 we need to put the GL account to Profitability segment
the GL account we use is 53000000  and from OKb9 based on plant it picks a Cost center  and From cost center we settle it to COPA
    Is thre a better way
