Delete last Public Folder Database
Hi, i have full Exchange 2010 deployment and one Exchange 2007 mailbox server that contains only one public folder database.
I dont have any public fodler databases on Exchange 2010 servers so there is only one public folder db in the whole organization residing in the last mailbox 2007 server.
my users are not using public folders and i have full web distributino OAB and im not using the public folder db for anything
I want to remove that one public folder database, but it gave me errors that there is some folder inside, when i dig inside the PF eirarchy, i can only see some system folders that i couldnt delete.
So is it safe if i use adsiedit to delete that PF database?

Hello together,
we have an Exchange 2010 SP3 UR5 Infrastructure. Now the end is in sight for Public Folders :)
We want to Remove our Last Public Folder Database on our Organization.
How can i get this managed and what is the Outlook 2007+++ Client Impact on this Action ?
The Plan is:
Remove all Public Folder Content
Set the OAB to Web Distribution Only
Clear the “msExchHomePublicMDB” attribute on Exchange Databases
Clear the “siteFolderServer” attribute on CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)
Remove the Public Folder Database with ADSI
Is there anything else to do ?
Is there any Outlook Client Impact on this ? Does the Users get a Outlook Error like "your exchange administrator did some changes please restart" or is it transparent for the users ?
thanks for Feedback,
Best,
MartinHello,
Please follow the Naren.Neelam's suggestion.
Besides, I recommend you remove database via EMC or EMS. If you can't remove the database via EMC or EMS, and then you can use ADSIEDIT to remove the public folder database from the organization.
When you remove a public folder database, the Exchange database (.edb) file for the database and other files associated with the database aren't automatically deleted. You must delete the public folder database files manually.
Here are some articles for your reference.

I am on Exchange 2010 SP3, and I am at the point where I am getting rid of using Public Folders. All folders have since been converted to room mailboxes, or deleted since they were unused. The OAB is no longer being distributed through pubic folders.
I was going to follow the steps here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876883(v=exchg.141).aspx
However, I am aware of the problem with the Internet Newsgroup
public folder that can't be deleted.
So I read where you have to use ADSI to delete the database instead if you can't delete the public folder database cause of that specific public folder. So what are the CORRECT steps/order to decommission your public folders when you have the dreaded
Internet Newsgroups public folder you can't delete?OK, I went to remove the public folder database today. But it wouldn't delete because of this issue I think.
It's the last public folder database in my enterprise, and the only folder left is the stupid Internet Newsgroup folder I can't delete.
The error is:
Microsoft Exchange Error
The public folder database 'DBPublicFolders' cannot be deleted.
DBPublicFolders
Failed
Error:
The public folder database "DBPublicFolders" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. For detailed instructions about how to remove a public folder

OK
If I go the ADSI method, what should I do before hand? dismount the database? remove it's association with all databases? -
I have 2 Exchange 2010 SP3 RU6 servers. All Mailboxes and Public Folders have been moved from the old server to the new one. If I dismount the Public Folder database from the old server, delivery to mail enabled Public Folders stops. I
believe resolving this is the last step before decommissioning this old server and uninstalling Exchange from it.
Before I delete the Public Folder database and/or uninstall Exchange from my old server, what do I need to do to setup routing/transport of email to Public Folders on my new server?
I've used the MoveAllReplicas.PS1 script successfully and believe nothing remains on the old server. Do I simply need to remove all mail enabled Public folders now with the Remove-PublicFolder EMC command? Or is it a background kind of task that
automatically updates after some period of time and then messages just start delivering directly to the new location of my Public Folders?Hi and thanks for your suggestion, but Get-PublicFolderMoveRequest is an Exchange 2013 command. I first ran the MoveAllReplicas script, probably a month ago. I've also used the RemoveReplicaFromPFRecursive script and
still it says that Replicase still exist within the Public Folder Database that I woul like to remove from my old server to be decommissioned. I've read of other people trying to uninstall Exchange from an old server that have encountered this error,
causing the uninstall to fail. Get-PublicFolderStatistics -Server "oldserver" | Format-List returns:

Here it shows the size and count are 0 (zero), so I should be good to go. But, I am unable to remove it due to the Replicas Exist error.
Elsewhere, I found a suggestion to clear the checkmark in the OAB 'Distribution' settings regarding Public Folders, but that didn't help. I've also seen posts saying to dismount the Public Folders, rename them and when mounting,
take the option to create a blank or empty Public Folder database. When I did that, the mail enabled Public Folders did not resolve when sending emails. I had to quick mount the saved copy of my Public Folder database.
So, regarding your suggestion, does Disabling and then Enabling mail enabled folders re-associate or register them with the current Public Folder database structure?
One more thing I found is that the get-mailpublicfolder command returns an error stating a folder is corrupt.
WARNING: The object ci.walla-walla.wa.us/Microsoft Exchange System Objects/Library Vacation Calendar has been corrupted, and it's in an inconsistent state. The following validation errors happened:
WARNING: Property expression "Library Vacation Calendar" isn't valid. Valid values are: Strings formed with characters from A to Z (uppercase or lowercase), digits from 0 to 9, !, #, $, %, &, ', *, +, -, /, =, ?, ^, _, `, {, |, } or ~. One
or more periods may be embedded in an alias, but each period should be preceded and followed by at least one of the other characters. Unicode characters from U+00A1 to U+00FF are also valid in an alias, but they will be mapped to a best-fit US-ASCII
string in the e-mail address, which is generated from such an alias.
I don't see anything in the name of the folder, unless it actually has the " character embedded in it. But what is also odd is that I don't have a folder called "Library Vacation Calendar". It may be the remnant of something in the
past of a failed attempt. I do have a folder called VacationCalendar that the Library uses, and have even exported to PST and recreated without any impact to this problem. I do not know how to clear this condition, and assume it is responsible
for the Active Replicas error I get when trying to remove the PF database. -
Exchange 2007 Public Folder Database cannot be deleted
We are in the process of decommissioning exchange 2007 server from 2007 <-> 2013 coexistence.
All user MailboxDatabases have been sucsessfully removed, however PF Mailbox databases return an error.
“The public folder database 'Public Folder Database' cannot be deleted”
Object is read only because it was created by a future version of Exchange: 0.10 (14.0.100.0). Current supported version is 0.1 (8.0.535.0).
I am suspecting the presence for 2 OAB is the reason why we can’t delete Public folder database from 2007 server.

Exchange 2010 Recover Public Folder database from replication database.
Following a hardware failure on Saturday, one of our public folder databases was dismounted, and was corrupt. I was able to run eseutil /p to get to a clean shutdown state, but I still couldn't mount and more research suggested that the logs for the database
were corrupted and unrecoverable (Log file: E:\logs\EXCH-PFDB1\E0100007E16.log
ERROR: Log damaged (unusable). Last Lgpos: (0x7e16,9,0). Error - 501.)
Everything i can find suggests that at the point where it makes the most sense just to restore the database. We do have another public folder database, which is set up to replicate all of its data with the one that went down, so this
should be relatively easy. However I want to make sure that I don't do it wrong and end up deleting my good database. What's the proper procedure for this? I can't seem to find anyone who has documented it.Thank you Gulab. This worked for me after a drive holding the Public Folder database logs failed. I first replaced the drive and recreated the folder structure. I then ran a Symantec Backup Exec restore job which failed although some
log files did recover. Unfortunately, I could still could not mount the Public Folder Database so I ran
Eseutil /mh which confirmed a dirty shutdown. I then emptied all files from the Log folder which appeared as a result of the restore job and ran Eseutil /p which was successful.
I was then able to mount the Public Folder Database and I could see the contents of the Public Folders in Outlook and the Log folder started to populate from the DAG's second copy. -
Move Mailbox database and Public Folder database from VMwar RDM drive to VMware VMFS/VMDK Drive
Good Afternoon,
So I have 1 DAG with 3 mailbox server (1 physical and 2 Virtual (vmware)). The Vmware server Mailbox and Public folder databases/logs are currently on RDM drive. I need to get rid of the RDM drives and use VMFS/Vmdk drives for mailbox and public
folder databases. I was thinking 3 options:
1- Introduce new VM Members into DAG and simply give these new VMs VMFS/VMDK drives, add servers into DAG and have DAG replicate databases to new server. I really don't want to do this.
2-On current VM, delete RDM drive along with database, add VMFS/VMDK drive replacement and have the DAG copy database.
3- On current VM, suspend replication, copy database/logs in temp location, delete the RDM drive, create the VMFS/VMDK drive, copy the database and logs to new drive, enable replication. Do the same for public folder database/logs, but not sure how
to stop/start replications, since its not in DAG?
I'm looking for solution that will take least amount of time. Option 3 seems best solution, but not sure if there any gotchas.. What are you thought??
Thanks in advance for you helpTake the database offline means stop replications to the the passive mailbox server?
Also, what is procedure to take public folder offline. We have public folder replicated on all 3 servers.
Hi cuttabutta,
Yes, take the database offline on the passive server can stop replication from primary server.
you can also take the public folder database offline to stop replication.
In addition, you can refer to the following article to configure public folder replication:

I have a client with SBS2011. They have a corrupted Public Folder Database which cannot be repaired. I don't need any data. Is there a way to delete it (when I try to, it talks about selecting a different server, I only have the one sbs2011). I just
want to create a new fresh one.
When I try to create a new one, I am told I can only have one.
Help!Hi,
If you are trying to remove Public folder database from ADSIEdit, please back up the folder, just in case.
Or you can also try to remove Public folder database with this command
Get-PublicFolder -Server <ServerName> "\Non_Ipm_Subtree" -Recurse -ResultSize:Unlimited | Remove-PublicFolder -Server <ServerName> -Recurse -ErrorAction:SilentlyContinue
Replace <ServerName> with the name of your server.

Public Folder Database Removal
Hello,
I am working in a Exchange 2010/2013 co-existence environment.
All mailboxes have been moved to Exchange 2013.
Public folders remain on Exchange 2010 for the moment.
There are 4 Public folder databases, all identical in terms of replicas:
PFDB1 - MBX01
PFDB2- MBX02
PFDB3 - MBX03
PFDB4 - MBX04
Circumstances beyond my control may mean that I need to take the MBX03 and MBX04 servers out of the production environment before I have migrated the public folder hierarchy across to 2013.
What is the recommended method for removing the public folder databases on these two servers?
Previous experience tells me that removing a database containing any replicas will fail. How can this be mitigated while keeping the PF structure in tact on PFDB1 and PFDB2 and thus serving the client mailboxes?
Regards
MattHi,
To remove a public folder databae, you can look at the following article.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/dd876883(v=exchg.141).aspx
Before you delete public folder database, please dismount public folder databases temporarily and make sure Exchange 2013 users can access public folders normally.

Can I delete the "Public" folder?
I'm wondering if I can delete the Public folder, or if I should refrain from doing so?
I've tried to figure out what the purpose of the Public folder is, but I'm not sure if I've understood correctly..
As far as I can see, it's there for other people to access the files within (which I don't find very comforting in the first place).
Since I have no use for sharing files with people this way, I figure I have no use for this folder either.
So, that's my reasoning for wanting to delete this folder.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.Where the Public Folder comes in handy is if you want to share files between other users of your Mac. Normally, when you log on, you cannot access other user account's files...except for the Public Folder. If you are the only user, then even though you won't really take advantage of this feature, you really won't gain much from deleting it either.

Resources and public folder database - migration from 2007 to 2013
We migrated our resource mailboxes thru the move mailboxes in 2013 EAC but now we're at the point of decommissioning our 2007 servers. Before the actual decommission we stopped all 2007 services and dismounted all 2007 databases. Once we did
this the resources would no longer work - errors pertaining to cannot directly book the resource.
I had to bring up the public folder database for the moved resources to work again. We do not use public folders any longer so we did not do any type of public folder migration. Do I need to do this for the resources to work?Hi,
Could you please tell me your Outlook version?
I saw someone got the following error when he tried to book resource after migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, if Outlook version is Outlook 2007. But Outlook 2010 worked well.
"Cannot directly book a resource for this meeting."
Please switch between online and cached mode to check the result. And please check if this issue occurs in OWA.
If possible, please use Outlook 2010 to check the result.

Exchange 2007 error relating to Public Folder Database
Hi
We migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 recently as we already had the licence so decided to take advantage of it.
We unfortunately forgot to migrate the Public Folders as we mistakenly thought as we didn't use them they were no longer needed in Exchange 2007.
We are now receiving
"Event ID 8207, MSExchangeFBPublish
Error updating public folder with free/busy information on virtual machine BARR-EXCH-001. The error number is 0x80004005."
On the server, I have tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945602 and the command
doesnt show an error but
Get-PublicFolder -Identity "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY" -Recurse | fl name,Replicas
Still shows no entry for the NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY. I have been advised to create a new PF store on the server as the one currently is probably empty or corrupted.
To do this would I follow this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/bb123687(v=exchg.80).aspx
Or
Dismount the public folder database on the Exchange 2007 serverGo to the folder path of the EDB filedelete\move the EDB fileGo back to the management console and mount the
public folder database. You will get a warning that one or more database files is missing. Go ahead and clickOK to mount a blank database file.?
Any help/advice appreciated.
Cheers
Cheers ChrisHi,
If the existing file is corrupt, I recommend you recreate a new public folder database in Exchange 2007.

Public folder database guidelines
hello. thanks for the time.
I wanted to get some input and thought in regards to moving a public folder environment from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010. we are going to copy the files over using a 3rd party tool. what i wanted to know is , is it possible to separate the public
folder traffic from Exchange 2010 mailbox traffic. also we have about 600GB of data in public folders. My thought was to have a dedicated public folder server in 2010.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397221(v=exchg.141).aspx#MailEnabled
this link provides a good intro and says that public folder emails are treated differently.
"Because mail sent to public folders is directed to the public folder database instead of to a mailbox in the mailbox database, Exchange
routes e-mail messages by using a method that's slightly different from the method used to route e-mail messages to a regular mailbox."
Does this mean you can dedicate a hub server for it as well? we use public folders heavily. unfortunately.
thanks for the time and effort.thanks for the quick response. so just to clarify to add the Exchange 2010 server (in the same Exchange ORG) I need to run:
\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 -TopPublicFolder “\” ServerToAdd <new server to replicate to>
What if I wanted to add only parts of the heirachy? like only the finance folder? and then move marketing and Technology
later? It's because we have about 500GB in public folder data. I know it's a lot but we are trying to cut out archived data slowly.
Also if we want high availability do I need to provide another 500GB of space on another 2010 server so it can hold a replica copy if the new 2010. we plan on turning off the 2007 environment and would like to keep public folders in high availabilty.
2007 was good in that sense where it held mailbox clustered server for the public folder database? 2010 does not provide that, correct because of the DAGs?
thanks for the time and effort. -
Programmatically insuring that all public folder databases have a replica of every folder
Hi,
I'm looking to essentially insure that all 3 public folder databases have a copy of every folder. Right now there may be some that are only on mbx1 and mbx3, and some only on mbx1 and mbx2, etc. It would seem that the right tool to leverage for
this task is the pre-canned AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 script, but I am looking for clarification for how many times do I have to run it.
For example, if I have 3 servers to sync (MBX1, MBX2, MBX3), would I need to run all of the following commands:
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX1 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX2”
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX1 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX3”
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX2 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX1”
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX2 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX3”
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX3 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX1”
* .\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –Server MBX3 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd “MBX2”
Or is this overkill?
Thanks in advance!
JCThe -Server parameter says what server to use to get the hierarchy. You can safely assume that hierarchy replication is working, so you don't need to use this parameter, leaving your script to this:
.\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd "MBX1"
.\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd "MBX2"
.\AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 –TopPublicFolder \ –ServerToAdd 'MBX3"
You can schedule this to run with Task Scheduler, running with a service account that has appropriate permissions, on one of the public folder servers. Or, you could schedule it to run on a CAS or some other server that has the Exchange Management Tools
installed, or you could run it using Remote PowerShell. If you don't run it on a mailbox server, put back the -Server MBX1 (or any of the public folder servers) so the command connects to a valid hierarchy. Again, you do not need to run the command
for every permutation of -Server and -ServerToAdd.
