DNS Issue - Unable to resolve Hostname until IPConfig /flushdns and ipconfig /registerdns is done.

We are having a random issue, that at first was limited to our Windows 7 x64 boxes, but now is appearing in our x32 bit boxes.
Network Setup -> we are running Active Directory 2008 in Native.  Our DHCP scope is setup to hand out the DNS addresses to all clients, and is working.
What happens to an impacted client.
They will be working, and able to browse/connect to services with in/out our network.  Then for some reason they will go to a page like -> intranet.ourcompanyname.net.  IE will advise it cannot open the page.
1)If we ping either just intranet or the FQDN - it will advise host cannot be found.
2)However if we do an nslookup on the same client - nslookup will return the IP of the Corresponding FQDN.
3)We have to perform a ipconfig /flushdns and a ipconfig /registerdns on the the client.
4)Once that is done, the client machine can again connect to the FQDN
The only FQDN's that are impacted by this are ALL Internal.  Example - they never lose the ability to resolve something like
www.google.ca, etc.  It also usually impacts just one internal FQDN - so they may lose the ability to resolve the Intranet, but another internal website on the same server and/or another application (like email) will
continue to work fine.
I really am at a loss as to why.  DNS is working properly at the Server Level.

Hi,
It may be caused by DNS cache pollution. To verify this, please run "ipconfig /displaydns > C:\dnscache.txt" command, then check if there is a wrong cache of "intranet.ourcompanyname.net" in the dnscache.txt
file.
To find out where does the wrong cache come from, please run "ipconfig /all" command, then check if there is a unexpected DNS server configured.
If the DNS configuration is correct in the client side, please try to perform a network capture on the client. It can tell us where does the wrong cache come from.
Best Regards.

  • Unable to resolve hostname to IP

    Hi,
I have a query which seems unusual but very important to get my job done. I'm trying to resolve the hostname to IP on a linux platform (Cent OS). Have a sample code how I'm trying to achieve the same.

    for(InetAddress ad : addr)
    if(ad.getHostAddress().equals(IP))

All necessary setup to establish connection to DNS is done in "/etc/resolv.conf"
Hostnames like "_hostname", "host/name" are valid and could able to do nslookup to these from console. But the same is failing from java end.
    Any help is highly appreciated.

Your code looks good, and I suppose your resolv.conf file is ok as well. The only potential problem I see is that an underscore is not allowed in hostnames. Does your code work for hostnames that don't contain underscores?

  • Unable to resolve server's DNS address.

Been sharing my internet (ethnernet) with another Mac OS X 10.6 via airport, but the other mac is unable to resolve server's DNS address. Help?

    Hi,
Have you contacted your internet service provider (ISP) as DNS usually are ISP related. Have they reset their modem or router,  not just power cycle?
I suggest you change the Preferred DNS server, try the following steps:
    1. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
    2. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties".
    3. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties".
    4. In the Internet Protocol window, let's change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.222.222
    5. Click 'OK' twice to complete the modification.
If the issue persists, please repeat the steps and change the "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.220.220.
Also, if the issue persists, I suggest you run the following command:
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
To get IP address & DNS from DHCP, the DNS server should be internal DNS server IP.
    Hope this helps,

  • DNS Forwarders say unable to resolve. Root Hints timeout during validation.

I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials server that has been up and running for a year. The Server is the domain controller with the DNS server role installed. There is only one NIC card used on the network. Today, DNS stopped working. The server and the
clients can access internet websites if IP addresses are used; otherwise, accessing websites fails. Looking at the DNS properties page on the Forwarders tab, I see that each DNS server listed (which are the DNS servers given to me by my ISP
provider) says <Unable to resolve>. When I saw that those addresses were not resolving, I added Open DNS IP addresses and I added google's DNS addresses in the DNS forwarders list but they too said <Unable to resolve>.
I can ping the Open DNS IP addresses, the google DNS IP addresses and the ISP provider's DNS IP addresses. NOTES: 1) I tried unchecking IPv6 on the DNS' server's Ethernet adapter properties; 2) I have done a flushdns; 3) I have verified that
my DNS services are running; 4) the first DNS on my server's Ethernet adapter properties is the IP address of the DNS server (which is 10.0.0.51) and the second is the loopback (127.0.0.1); 5) the power management on the NIC adapter is disabled; 6) nslookup
works for 8.8.8.8 but not for www.google.com.
I removed the Forwarders and tried to use just Root Hints. That didn't make any difference. I went back into DNS Manager->[DNS server name]->right-click properties->select Root Hints tab. I clicked on a.root-servers.net to edit. Under the Validated
column it says "a timeout occurred during validation". I clicked cancel to back out of everything I was doing.
As I mentioned, this was all working fine until this morning. Can someone tell my why the Forwarders are unable to resolve? An why the Root Hints timeout during validation?

    Hi,
It could be a firewall issue. Try to use public DNS server to resolve names,
    nslookup
    server
IP address of the public DNS server
    www.microsoft.com
If timeout occurs, it means that firewall or some other similar device block the DNS traffic. Please disable the firewall and try again.
If issue persists, please try to restart the DNS service.
If it still doesn’t work after restarting the DNS services, please check if there is any warning or error in the event viewer of DNS servers.
    Best regards.

  • HomeHub is unable to resolve a DNS CNAME pointing ...

Just sent a technical compaint email off to BT to get an answer to this, but thought I would share here in case it helps anyone else.
    Problem:
My HomeHub 3 is unable to resolve DNS queries where the DNS has a CNAME pointing to my WAN address. BT's and other public DNS servers resolve correctly - so the problem is not with the DNS record.
    Background:
I have some devices at home which use DNS for name resolution. As a web developer, it is anoying that I have to use a different DNS name from inside my house to outside because of the above problem. It is also annoying that the only two workarounds I can think of are to a) buy a new (non-BT) router, or b) manually configure each device to not use the HomeHub for name resolution because BT have locked down the hub so I can't do it automatically.
    Reproduce steps:
    1) Set up a DNS record to point to your HH WAN address.
    2) Set up a second DNS record that ponts to the first with a CNAME.
    3) DNS queries to the first record succeed, queries to the second fail.
    4) Set up a DNS record to a different IP address (try adding 1 to your WAN address)
    5) Set up another CNAME to point to that address
    6) DNS queries to both addresses succeed because the CNAME doesn't point to your WAN address

First of all, thank you for your email. I can certainly understand that a problem like this can cause frustration and inconvenience and I’m very sorry.
At the BT Broadband Technical Helpdesk we can only help with an actual broadband fault. The scope of free technical support for your broadband is limited to the supply of a broadband connection to one computer with the Homehub at it's default settings.
I understand that you have specific setup requirements. I'm sorry that I'll be unable to help configure the Homehub the way you'd like it to work.
I'd recommend that you contact our Home IT Experts Service where one of my colleagues will be able to help you.

  • I am unable to update software or backup my devices. Apple techs unable to resolve the issue after hours of phone support over the course of several months.

I am unable to update software, transfer purchases, sync, or backup any of my 3 devices. I have tried using iTunes on other computers, uninstalling iTunes with tech support walking me through, using a different user on my computer, deleting photos off of my devices, using an ethernet cable instead of connecting with wifi, uninstalling my antivirus software and firewall, and had my laptop examined by several techs who all determined there was nothing wrong with the laptop that explains what has been going on. I am also unable to view or download purchases on iTunes.  Clicking the Itunes store results in a blank white screen. I get various error messages, including -9886. Apple techs and now the engineers have been unable to resolve the issues thus far, even after several hours of phone support over the course of several months (about 5 hours this month alone). I have done everything they've suggested, even when they've suggested I do something over again, and I'm becoming frustrated. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can offer. Thank you in advance for your time.

    Hi there
Sorry for hijacking your thread as put by Dahveed. However I have resolved my issue so I thought I'll share it with the rest of you.
I checked for the error 3194 in youtube and I found some good videos that tell you how to resolve the problem. The issue I was facing was the actually (I know because I have resolved it now) the communication between my computer and apple server which can be fixed as following (if you are using windows):
There is file in following directory:
    C:\Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
The file normally has no extension and it is in file format. You need to open it and make sure that every line that has apple server id starts with "#". In my case one of the line started directly with the ip address and then gs.apple.com.
Perform your restore/update after that and hopefully it should be resolved (mine did).
    Cheers

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • DNS Server does not resolve new generic Top Level Domain names- CNR configuration issue?

    Hi all,
I am not sure if this is the correct community to post this question, but I will give it a try. I noticed that the users of my network cannot resolve web sites using new top level domain names, like ".education", ".international", etc. I have an internal DNS server made by Infoblox and a Cisco CNR v6.3.3.1 as an external DNS server. Infoblox uses CNR as its forwarder and CNR uses the root DNS servers for queries.
I would think that CNR was the problem because it is an obsolete product but after speaking with a fellow engineer at another organization where they still use an older version of CNR than mine, they have no problems at all. So now I am thinking it is a setting either on Infoblox, or on CNR I need to change. I can see Infoblox is forwarding the requests to CNR but that's about it. I am not sure if CNR is discarding the request. When I do an nslookup from a PC in my network it does not matter if I set my DNS server to be the Infoblox or the CNR. Neither resolves the URL.
Then again, no matter what I lookup using the CNR as my DNS, I only get a response with the root DNS names and IPs!
    Any help is appreciated!

    Hi Constantinos,
Have you taken a look at the infoblox community site?  We've just reposted your question there and alerted some internal SMEs that should provide a solution soon.

  • Dns issues with one domain (Resolved)

i'm currently having dns issues with one domain, in that it won't resolve when I use bt's dns servers.
The domain is owned by a friend in the US who runs his own server for irc, web, and I also have a server that is on his connection, and resolves fine from other machines on different networks, and also resolves fine when I set windows to use the opendns servers, but when it's set to either my routers ip (using bt's dns), or set to automatic (using bt's dns via the homehub), this one domain will not resolve.
I'm pretty certain it's not a windows issue, as it's a clean install of windows 7 that I did yesterday. I've tried rebooting the homehub, and also flushing my dns on windows, but this has not solved the issue.
As I say, it resolves fine on other networks, and also when I use the opendns servers, so I know it's definately a dns issue.
    Using bt's dns servers:
    C:\Users\admin>ping chatnsn.com
Ping request could not find host chatnsn.com. Please check the name and try agai
    n.
    Using opendns:
    C:\Users\admin>ping chatnsn.com
Pinging chatnsn.com [68.51.24.74] with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Ping statistics for 68.51.24.74:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
(The timeouts are normal...he has his router set to not respond to ping requests).
Has anyone got any ideas on how to sort this out? Preferably without having to phone the helpdesk...lets just say i've done it in the past, and according to the poeple I spoke to in india, I knew nothing about my own systems, and it was a problem at my end...which was not the case, and I proved this several times.
Edit: This issue appears to have resolved itself, and the domain is now resolving again using the homehub for dns resolution.

    Hi,
When NSLOOKUP starts, before anything else, it checks the computer's network configuration to determine the IP address of the DNS server that the computer uses.
Then it does a reverse DNS lookup on that IP address to determine the name of the DNS server.
If reverse DNS for that IP address is not setup correctly, then NSLOOKUP cannot determine the name associated with the IP address.

  • Unable to resolve single DNS name using root hints

Recently, we had reports that we could not internally resolve a certain .com domain name (discovered by undeliverable e-mails).  A lookup using an external server (Google's in our case) resolves the .com name just fine.
Long ago, we had another DNS issue that lead us into implementing the following registry change:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/968372?wa=wsignin1.0
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
    2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
    3. On the Edit menu, click
New, click DWORD (32-bit) Value , and then add the following value:
    Value: MaxCacheTtl
    Data Type: DWORD
    Data value: 0x2A300  (172800 in decimal = 2 days)
That is the only DNS change that we have made.  We are using root hints, but temporarily added Google DNS as a forwarder so that we are able to resolve this .com address.
As a test, I did remove that registry entry, restarted the DNS service and tested again to no avail.
    Any starting points?

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that DNS server can’t resolve .com with its root hint.
Could you provide more information about the DNS architecture, such as numbers of DNS servers, their locations and relationships, system version, etc.
And please post the results of NSlookup test(use local DNS server, and then use Google's server to resolve name ) here.
    Best Regards,

  • DNS Issues with Hyper-V 2012 R2 VDI Pooled Desktop Deployment

    Good afternoon all!
We are running a POC VDI deployment on a Nutanix system, and I am having a DNS issue. I would appreciate some help trying to figure this out. Two situations that are causing issues that I can see:
    1. VMs go into a saved state if not being used: This in itself is not an issue, and I see it as a way to save resources not being used; however, if a VM is saved for a few days, the DHCP address often gets reassigned. Now if users are connecting, and that
saved VM with the stale address is called to wake up, the VM is not found.
    2. Recreating the pool after updating the golden image: This is the bigger issue. After a couple days of running smoothly, I was asked by my pilot users to add Firefox. I installed it and recreated all the VMs in the pool. When this happened, they all got
new IPs, but the old DNS records were not updated. This made the broker unable to find a single VM in the pool. I could not ping a single one.
Has anybody else run into these DNS issues with a VDI deployment? If so, what did you do to resolve it? If not, have any ideas on what is going on here?
    Thank you in advance!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
As per my research, I can say that the default behavior. When we will recreate the VM it will change the IP address dynamically. But from your description it seems the DNS record is not getting update and due to that you can’t find your VM with hostname or
IP. But for this you can set one option under DNS server with which DNS record can update the new IP address. The option you need to set is “Dynamic updates>Nonsecure and Secure” under general properties in sites. You can check below snap.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Solution to "unable to resolve host" and frequent network drops

Like many, I just purchased a shiny new HP Touchpad 32GB.  Updated the firmware to the latest version, enjoy it's web browsing capabilities and some of the apps.
However, like many, web browsing often coughed or sputtered and would freeze often during network operations.  Web sites like Google or Bing would often hang and become useless.  A Google search of "Unable to resolve host" showed that I wasnt' alone.
The 'solution', or so it seemed, was to reset the network by toggling airplane mode.  But doing this every 5-10 minutes, or more often, was quite frustrating.  Also, other applications, such as Spaz HD for Twitter were really lethargic.
This was all a problem until I changed the MTU on my wireless router from the standard 1500 to 1300.  Rebooted the modem, all is now well.  "And there was much rejoicing...."
After this change, haven't had the need to toggle the Airplane mode even once.  Spaz HD runs much quicker, Google & Bing no longer lock up, complex pages such as the DailyCaller.com or Redstate.com no longer time out and work properly.
I would be curious to see if others who are having the same problem, can make a similar change, and if helps them solve this issue.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

For me, it turned out to be somewhat different - my home wireless was working fine with several different devices/OSs, but it seems that WebOS stopped falling back to any DNS servers beyond the first one.  Whereas other devices (android phones, linux laptops, etc) still resolved DNS fine using the secondary/tertiary DNS entries, WebOS starting giving me the "unable to resolve host" error.  So I changed the (primary) static DNS entry on my wireless router to one of the Google public DNS servers (8.8.8.8) and now WebOS is happy again.  The only thing that changed for me (on the tablet) was enabling usbnet just to check it out, and even after I disabled usbnet, I still had the name resolution failures.  Go figure...
