Firewall - Configuration/GUI of the Mac OS X 10.6 / 10.7 Firewall

First I would like to thank Apple
for making the Mac OS X operating system.
And thank you for the Lion update coming soon.
We properbly all are waiting to get the
Mac OS X 10.7 Lion update.
I have seen the full feature list of Lion:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/features.html
All the great new innovation and apps is great stuff.
But I came to wonder about one thing though.
The internet apps like:
FaceTime, iCloud, iChat, AirDrop etc.
They more or less all requires custom ports on different
protocols to be opened and configurated.
Even the SIP for Facetime has to be enabled etc.
Like the FaceTime Firewall ports here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4245
In the full feature list page of Mac OS X Lion
there is not listed anything about the Mac OS X Lion Firewall!
In Snow Leopard we can't configurate the Firewall with
custom ports and protocols etc.
Everybody refer to the Hanynet NoobProof and WaterRoof
firewall apps. I'm using the NoobProof my self right now.
http://www.hanynet.com
But I think the Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Lion could do with a
much better and way more easier firewall GUI to be able to
configurate ports and protocols and firewall rules and even NAT.
Isn't the Mac OS X about doing it the easy way!
I think a Firewall in Mac OS X with only a On and Off button (more or less)
wont cut it any longer!
For people not knowing about Firewall its OK to have an On/Off button,
but for the user that know about firewall, ports and protocols
it would be great to have a button to go in an be able to configurate
making rules and opening ports on specific protocols and doing NAT etc.
The Mac OS X Firewall GUI created by Bryan Hill called
"Brickhouse" and now called "Flying Buttress"
updated last in 2005!
(Which I could NOT get to work in Snow Leopard)
it had a very good and easy
to use Graphical User Interface. (GUI).
See it here:
http://www.securemac.com/firewallsecurityshareware.php
Why isn't there any like that for the present Mac OS X????
Anybody know anything that will help in that direction???
Anybody know a nicer firewall GUI or App for
Snow Leopard / Lion ???
Please comment here.

Thank you very much for responding to my thread Thomas and roam.
Wheter it is a question to run a firewall on Mac OS X or not,
is not my question. And thank you, but I do know the difference between a
GUI for the Mac OS X built in firewall and a 3rd party stand alone firewall.
If I and properbly many other Mac OS X users choose to run with a firewall,
many of us would like to be able to configurate as WE want it to be.
Many users have special needs that require speciel configuration of the firewall.
There are other things than Apple network technologies you know!
Running a firewall or not. There is Pro's and Con's on both. It's a free choise right. I respect both.
I have 8 CPU cores and 16 threads on my Mac Pro, so I think my Mac can handle a running firewall!
"Better safe, than sorry!" As they say "Over there".
;o)
Apple has chosen to make a firewall in
Mac OS X, then there must be a reason why it is there.
And besides that.
I would bet that, the more popular the
Mac computers gets in the future and the more marketshare
the Mac computers get over the hopeless Windows platform.
The more hackers will be interesting in hacking the Mac OS X.
So a firewall would be something to consider the more Apple has success.
I think that is quite logical.
I'm sure there is almost as many undiscovered security holes in UNIX
as there is on the Windows platform. It is just a question of time
before the hackers will point their weapons against the Mac OS X.
So let me explain a bit more precise what I need…
I'm used to configurate lots of hardware Routers with Firewalls. Doing things like creating firewall rules, opening ports on specific protocols, WAN-to-LAN and LAN-to-WAN, NAT IP redirection, enabling SIP, content filtering, wireless accesspoints with encryption and MAC Address filtering, creating VPN tunnels, setting up Remote Desktop on Windows and Mac computers for Terminal Servers etc.
I'm also administrating FTP servers and NAS harddisks.
All that is always being configurated in a nice intuitive user interface via my web browser. Wheter it is a Router, NAS disk etc. THATS WHAT I WANT with the Firewall in Mac OS X. An "intuitive graphical user inteface" where I easily can configurate the Mac OS X firewall or a stand-alone firewall for that matter.
Yes I self use on my Mac Pro the Hanynet NoobProof firewall GUI right now.
But both the Hanynet firewall GUI's are crap. Lets face it!
They work yes! But the User Interface is NOT Mac OS X standard right!!!
If you pair the user interfaces with standard unser interfaces of a normal end-user Gateway Router with Firewall. Like ZyXEL, NetGear etc.
The Hanynet NoobProof don't have the feature to
choose ports on specific protocols.
With Apple FaceTime there are ports on both the
TCP and UDP protocols that has to be open for communication.
On the other side the Hanynet WaterRoof GUI
I know that it has the features to configurate ports on specific protocols but!
The User Interface is waaaaaaaay too complex and is anything else than intuitive!
I can't find ether head or tale in WaterRoof GUI!!! Completely Lawsy Interface. It is SO non Mac like!
(it needs a interface designer like myself)
I mean, "The Mac" and Mac OS X is all about doing things the "EASY, Nice and Intuitive Way" right!
I can't be that I'm the only one in the world that need a better and faster configuration of the Mac OS X firewall, can it?! There must be hundred thousands of other Mac OS X users with the same wish.
I know I'm a "designer", not a "programmer".
The only thing I program is HTML, CSS and DVD Video titles.
So with all due respect.
*** The question is…
Does anybody know a Firewall GUI or stand alone firewall for Mac OS X Snow Leopard/Lion that are easier than Hanynets????????????????
=========
If I was an Apple employed that delt with Mac OS X security.
I would make the Mac OS X firewall user interface different.
Top level choise could be: ON, OFF and CUSTOM.
So people with non knowledge of firewalls could just choose ON or OFF
to their liking. And leaving the choise for people that would like
to customize the firewall settings with the "Custom" button.
And there after a nice intuitive graphical user interface
to make all sorts of custom settings JUST like on a Gateway Router with built in firewall.
A firewall like that could not hurt anybody could it???!!!
It's MY Mac, I want to rule over MY firewall.
I like the Mac OS X very much, I think it is absolutely brilliant,
but the Firewall settings is NO GOOD for custom firewall configurations.
Apple has to pay attention to it, the sooner the better.
Please feel free to comment.
Best regards
Jesper

Can someone help explain how to add an external HD to the Mac? I have a Western Digital My Passport SE and need to configure if for the MAC and add it to the HD location on my Mac.

Connect the external drive to the Mac. You can do that while the Mac is on, (If the drive is one that has to be plugged into a wall outlet do that too and turn the power on.) If there is a light on the drive it should turn on.
Now double click on the hard drive icon - top left of the screen of your computer. When it opens look for the Applications folder. Double click that. Next look for a folder called Utilities. Double click. In there you will see a file called Disk Utility.app. Double click on that.
You will now see something like this, with two items on the left. The second one is your new drive.
Select it - one click. And click on Erase - one of the buttons at the top, You will see this.
You must select the Format, it's a drop down - the one shown in the image above is best. You can change the name from Untitled if you want. The name can be changed later if you prefer.
At this point look at the bottom right. There is a button there called Erase. Click on it. Then go get yourself a cup of coffee - this will take a few minutes.

  • Apple Configurator report of the apps that are available/downloaded

is it possible to generate a report in Apple Configurator of the apps that are available/downloaded?

If you don't see any messages, not have anti-malware running or the Firewall on, try installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.8 (according to your profile).
Restart your Mac after the combo in installed, try the App Store.
Also... if you have an app called Little Snitch installed, that can prevent a connection to the App Store.

  • What is the optimum core configuration for a new Mac Pro to process and manipulate very large (80 megapixel) images using PhotoShop and Camera Raw?

    Hello:
I will be using creative techniques to process and manipulate a large number (hundreds) of very large (80 megapixel) images captured using a medium format digital back (Phase One IQ180).
Final output will be digital fine art imagery printed using an Epson 11880 at large sizes (up to 60 inches x ?), retaining the highest possible quality and resolution. I will be using Adobe CC PhotoShop and Camera RAW as well as Capture One software. PhotoShop filters will be used extensively.
The Mac Pro needs to be optimized for the above purpose and be useful for at least five years. I plan to max out all the other options (RAM, graphics cards, storage). Performance is more important than cost.
The few discussions I have found that mention optimum core configurations seem to lean toward 6 or 8 (but likely are not taking into consideration my need for manipulating a large number of very large files), so I am looking to this foum for opinions.
    Thank you,

  • Cannot see Mac Mini Server from Internet: DynDNS alias gets thru cable modem to wireless router, not to the Mac Mini. How to configure?

I want to make my Mac Mini Server (Lion) visible to the Internet from my home LAN. I have followed the Lion server install wizards and also set up a dynamic DNS at DynDNS.com.
When I enter the Internet address with the proper alias from a web browser, I get dumped into the admin screen of the Linksys wireless router WRT300N. Hint: the WRT300N provides DHCP for the LAN, not the cable modem providing DHCP. The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled. The Mac Mini DHCP is reserved.
Suggestions? I could use the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 to provide DHCP but have hesitations.
Point me to the right discussion/article and get me back on track, please.

This sounds like a simple port forwarding issue, but I don't understand your LAN setup.
The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled.
The chances are, you're running NAT somewhere in your network. If not the WRT then what? If it's your cable modem then you must have port forwarding configured on the cable modem, and that's where you need to focus - change the port forwarding to point to your Mac Mini's address rather than the WRT.
HOWEVER, it is far more common to have the wireless router perform NAT and DHCP, which is why I question your setup.
    Not directly related, but:
The Mac Mini DHCP is reserved
Nix this. Your server should be configured manually, with a static IP address, not DHCP, even with a reservation in the DHCP server. The only advantage of DHCP is for dynamic hosts (hence the 'D' in 'DHCP') or if you expect to change your entire local subnet on any kind of frequent basis. The reality is that you can't just change the IP address of Mac OS X Server like this - there are too many dependencies, so it's better to set it manually, knowing that there's a cost (and pain) to change the server's address.

  • I'm trying to use a madcatz controller on the mac but it turns on for 2 seconds and turns off. the system profiler picks it up as a xbox 360 gamepad but says its not been configured. how can i allow my self use this with my games.

i'm trying to use a madcatz controller on the mac but it turns on for 2 seconds and turns off. the system profiler picks it up as a xbox 360 gamepad but says its not been configured. how can i allow my self use this with my games!

I have exactly the same problem.
I'm a little peed-off with Microsoft on this. The original wireless controller I have doesn't work either since the cable I'm using is 'just' the charge and play cable, so a direct connection to my Mac won't work with this cable. It's a cable for god's sake. Why on EARTH put any limitations on this!?!?
Next I learn I need an additional USB wireless receiver from Microsoft to get my original 360 controller to talk to my Mac. As I certainly don't want to fork any more microsoft dollars on this, this is not an option.
Next I think, yes! I have a MadCatz 360 wired USB controller. This should surely do the trick just plugging it in and the way I go. But oh no, for some reason I plug my MadCatz Xbox360 controller in, it flashes a few times then switches off and can't be turned on again.
The System Profiles recognizes it as a MadCatz 360 device controller but that is about it, but the ontroller software I download for the System Prefs (360Controller, USBOverdrive etc) don't even recognize the controller as being plugged in.
What the **** Is The Microsoft Deal with all of this!?!?
PS: Oh, and I forgot to mention, there are No drivers for device 4716 that I can find on the MadCatz website, or am I going blind?
If anyone has a link, it would be appreciated.

  • Batch Monitor and the Mac OS X Firewall

This is more or less what people have been saying for a few years now, "When I use Compressor the Mac OS X firewall repeatedly asks permission to allow incoming connections for the Batch Monitor! Why?!?!"
No matter how many times you click to approve or deny, the firewall alert reappears every five to twenty seconds. There seem to be many, many people with this problem. So far, the only solutions are to:
    1) Shut off the Mac OS firewall
    2) Switch the Mac OS firewall to "Allow only essential services" every time I want to use Compressor (a cumbersome solution at best)
    2) Keep clicking the buttons
    3) Don't use Compressor
While some might argue that Compressor is a poor substitute for a real video conversion utility, for the vast majority of users, it's the only game in town.
So, dear Apple, I humbly beg you on behalf of the literally thousands of users who deal with this problem, please either create a solution or suggest one.
I'm still on Final Cut 6 and Compressor 3. So, if anyone knows that the latest release solves this issue, I'd love to hear it.

I'm dealing with this same problem and have actually noted that you are confirmed about the YEARS because I found this problem posted December 6, 2007
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6563672
It's unfortunate that a 'Bad Taste' was left after that reply from the guy who called you a 'nitwit' - I didn't even pay attention to his name - at least you have one demiankz - and took the time to start this post. I humbly thank you.
At any rate, I was determined to find out - because I have always been struggling to 'Allow' it and last night I decided to 'block' it.
Does anyone know what is the right setting?
Also - one work around that has been working for me is this:
    1) when the popup comes up (leave it up) - Open the firewall, unlock the settings padlock at the bottom left (if it is locked) -
    2) find batch monitor and whatever the setting is - force a toggle i.e. if it is "allow" select "block" and visa versa - back to whatever you desire it to be. Just to force it to recognize you are changing it.
    3) NOW answer the popup to match whatever you toggled to in the firewall.
    4) lock the padlock again.
I've compressed a lot of jobs and I notice once I perform this it goes away for my entire job, provided I leave it alone until it finishes.
If you do something like browse the internet or work on other things, the message tends to pop up again.
Of course, after your job finishes, you will have to do this again - and that's why I wish people would keep responding to this post until we get an answer.
Persistence causes results. Negativity just causes - well, just ignore that.
At least attempt to be helpful, which I felt I have tried. It may work, it may not, or it may cause someone to recognize what the real problem is.
Good luck and hope we get an answer soon!

  • "Couldn't reach the .Mac configuration server. Try publishing again later."

I have been uploading to my iWeb 08 site successfully for weeks. I upgraded to OS 10.5 Leopard, and ever since, when I try to update my website, i get the message
"Publish Error - Couldn’t reach the .Mac configuration server. Try publishing again later."
I am fully up to date with all my software, and the problem must be linked to the installation of 10.5, as I literally uploaded 3 days before I installed it, and now when I try, I can't - I must have tried 30 times, on different networks, just in case, and nothing seems to work. I can sync with .Mac, and get my mail, it's just iWeb - any suggestions???
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi there
Try this - it's not an ideal solution but I have tried literally everything else.
    1. Copy the file named Domain from your own user name/Library/Application Support/iWeb - paste it into Macintosh HD/Users/Shared
    2. Create a new user account in Accounts. Call it Publishing. Make it an Admin account.
    3. Log on as Publishing.
    4. Open iWeb once, start a new site, doesn't matter what - then close it - this is just to create the correct folders.
    5. Copy and paste Domain file from Users/Shared to your Publishing/Library/Application Support/iWeb - overwrite the Domain file that is in there.
Then open iWeb (still logged in as Publshing) - it should be your existing site from your original username - change something so it needs publishing - then Publish all to .Mac - it should work. Not ideal, but it will allow you to publish.
The problem (I think, but I'm not sure) is that something is clashing in one of your preference files for one of your programs, but there's no way to work out which one... let me know if this is successful, as I would like to know.
This is what i did initially - I actually re-installed Mac OSX Tiger eventually, as I find Leopard too glitchy at the moment, I'll wait till it's had some fixes.

  • Blocked Incoming FTP from Mac OS X Server Via The Mac Client Firewall

This problem began with Mac OS X Tiger's firewall and lives on in 10.6.2.
    Situation:
Anyone with Tiger through Snow Leopard connects to my Mac OS X Server, v10.3. They have 'Passive Mode' OFF in their FTP client. They are 100% successful logging in. Their FTP client sends the LIST command and the server successfully responds with the list data.
But the data can't get into the client's Mac. Why? The Mac OS X firewall BLOCKS IT.
The solution? Nothing sane! You have to turn the Mac OS X firewall OFF. There is NO OTHER SOLUTION.
All the settings on the client machine are perfect. I've been over them a hundred times over the years, tried every single combination possible. So please don't ask or I may bite you.
What's going on: Mac OS X Server 10.3, despite never accepting Passive Mode, sends the LIST data to all client computers in, you guessed it, Passive Mode. The Mac OS X firewall will NOT accept Passive Mode. Result: Catch 22. You can't do it. You are screwed.
Oh, but you could open all the Passive Mode ports in the firewall, and that would work? Be my guest. No way am I going to suggest that horror of a workaround to the hundreds of Mac clients I have accessing my Mac OS X Server.
So Apple, FIX THIS. Integrate FTP Passive Mode into the Mac OS X firewall already!!!

Ok. I was doing something a bit silly. I had the network user and the local user with the same short name. So when they were looked up the local user got preference. So I've fixed all that and am moving huge amounts of data across my humble 802.11g network now. Will have to leave it for a few hours.

  • How to configure the mac mini to allow the clients to access both partitions...the client will only see the one we are logged into at the server???

if possible??? how do we configure the mac mini to allow the clients to access both partitions...the client will only see the one we are logged into at the server???

You have to explicitly share directories on external/secondary volumes.
Use the Server admin app to configure file sharing, and select which directory/directories on the second drive you want to share, then they'll be available to clients.

  • Publish error - error determining the .Mac publish configuration values

I have been unable to publish a website refresh for the past 2 weeks (not since the first time I tried). When I attempt to publish, it hangs at the "preparing to publish" window and then gives the error message "There was an error determining the .Mac publish configuration values. Please try again in a few minutes." It does not then release this error window to close until it pops open another window telling me how many days I have left on my trial .mac account. It has the correct number of days so I assume that it is communicating with the .mac server at some level. My internet connection is via satellite. This is my only option as I am shipboard. Update: I was able to able to connect via cable recently and, much to my surprise (and frustration), everything posted fine. I have the most recent updates for all software including iWeb running on a MacBook 2GHz, 2GB ram and 28GB free harddisk(iWeb 1.1.2 and OS X 10.4.8 build 8L2127 ). My internet connectivity is fine for other applications and for other aspects of iWeb. The primary reason I purchased the MacBook was to use the iWeb and its publishing capability. I note from other threads that this is an established problem with iWeb and satellite internet connections. Has there been any reliable fix established for this problem? The last thread I could find was last summer (and nothing from Apple), seemingly enough time for Apple (or the creative members of AppleNation) to address it. Given the high cost and sporadic reliability of shipboard internet, I'm hoping to use .mac to host site because of the incremental update capability. If there hasn't been a reliable fix determined, can anyone recommend a hosting site/method that does work reliably with iWeb and a satellite internet connection. I'm completely in the dark how this would work. This is my first website experience.
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I already sent out the .mac website in my Christmas letter so I'm fairly commited (but could recover, if unworkable)
    Thanks mucho!
MacBook 2GHz, 2GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   shipboard satellite internet connection

Now that would be cool...if we could figure out how to tell iWeb to be a little more patient with network latency! From all the reports here, it seems that if anything, iWeb has gotten more stringent in its network latency tolerance over the various little updates.
I personally use .Mac for my iWeb hosting right now... But you are right... if you could find some alternate place to host your iWeb pages, then you can use any FTP program to do the uploading.... and maybe be more successful from the shipboard internet access.
You might take a look at some of the free webhosts available... http://www.free-webhosts.com/ I have had pretty good experience with http://www.hostfreeweb.com/.

    Hi,
Unfortunately, what you are looking for is not available. This due that the options of the GUI are somewhat limited for initial configuration, but complex setups and commands are only availabe from the CLI.
This link shows the configuration options of the 5.1 ACNS code: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/webscale/uce/acns51/cache51/index.htm
Please notice appendix A; which explains the menu options of the GUI.

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.
