  • ILife 08 to 09 iWeb question (and a question about DW while I'm here)

    I was thinking of upgrading to iLife 09 for just a couple of reasons:
    (1) The iPhoto face recognition feature looks cool and I want to try it. I have tens of thousands of photos of friends from nearly 30 years in my iPhoto and it might be fun.
    (2) I basically like iWeb 08, but hate the way it deals with multiple sites. I always have to publish everything, but in iWeb 09 it looks like I can single out just a single site for publishing, even via FTP. is that right?
    Recently I also acquired Dreamweaver because of some work I'm doing for a company. But I find I can't even do basic simple things, like drag around text or insert a web widget (some HTML in a box) to move around and position - like I can do in iWeb.
    Are things like that possible in Dreamweaver?
    I can't even figure out how to add new text somewhere on a blank page in Dreamweaver. And everything I create looks boxy, plain and clunky. I am obviously not a web designer - I am a web application programmer.
    With Dreamweaver I feel like I stepped into some 20th century web authoring tool. With iWeb everything I create looks nice even though I have no artistic talent myself.

    I don't mind publishing to a folder and uploading using my FTP client, but it seems I have to publish ALL the sites each time to the folder and then just upload the one site's folder I was editing. So it takes a long time each time I publish to the folder. There is no way around that, is there?
    About my DW question, it was "in comparison to iWeb". If I asked in a Dreamweaver forum if DW could do this thing that iWeb could do, somebody would probably say, "Why don;t you ask your question on an iWeb forum?"

    Hello again everyone, i just have a couple more questions, i know Safari is a web browser but am i correct in assuming it is a high-speed/broadband-like web-browser? I am currently using AOL high-speed broadband on my PC but i dont plan on using aol when i switch to mac, so will safari just take my current high-speed connection and use it just as fast as Aol was?
    also, in debating between the $2,000 macbook pro and the $2,500, the only unupgradeable difference i can see it the video card being a Radeon X1600 128 or a Radeon X1600 256, now i plan on playing games on it, but it there that big of a difference between the 128 and the 256?

See this May 2006 review of the MacBook in Macworld.
    If you purchase a MacBook Pro, I'd opt for the fastest/largest VRAM graphics card available, i.e. the "ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB GDDR3 memory."

  • Multiclip multi questions (audio question and syncing question)

    I have two questions concerning multiclip editing:
    1. How do you select the audio from one angle to remain the audio throughout as opposed to the audio track changing every time you select a different video source?
    2. If one camera in a three camera set-up stops recording for a technical issue and then goes back up, is there a way to sync both of those files to one angle of a multiclip? If not, is there a way to make them separate angles and sync via input on three angles and on output for the fourth angle?

    1. In the Viewer's Playhead Sync Menu (upper center), select "Video"
    instead of "Video + Audio".
    2. Sorry, neither of your ideas will work. Multiclips work with actual media
    clips, so two clips will be two angles; and the sync method (in, out, timecode)
    is the same for all clips.
    I suggest you assemble the two files from the camera in a sequence (using
    identical settings as the clips), sync them up exactly (with a little space
    between them), and export them using the same settings to make a new clip,
    which you can then import and use for your multiclip.

  • K7N2 Delta2 : mbprobe question and tweakui question

    two questions:
    1) I installed temp monitor drivers for mbprobe using the winbond drivers that go with the software. the only temp i am able to read or put out is the mobo temp, my question is if there was something i overlooked on the mobo drivers cd that came with it, or do i need a diff driver than the one i installed?
    2) TweakUI question, i dunno if this is releated to the mobo or not, but i just came from a rev 1.03 asus a7n8x-dlx mobo and this never worked correctly with it either, i've reinstalled windows on several occations and never had this work correctly, the problem that i'm having is that under the auto-logon check-box, it unchecks itself after every windows boot, is there a setting i need to change so that it stays checked? i dunno what i'm doing wrong, all the other settings in tweakui remain even after reboots, so i couldn't figure out i was doing wrong

    Auto logon is not a mobo issue.  Try this instead of the auto logon in tweakui.

  • Answers to a question and another question

    Have just started using chat beta app for imessaging from my mac to iphones.
    a lot of people have had issues syncing properly between devices, which i had as well.
    by syncing i mean:
    at the moment on my iphone all messages from 'dave' are in a single conversation. if dave was to imessage me from his mac, his message would show in a different conversation because its come from his email address instead of his phone number. even if i add his email address to his contact it will still show in different conversation. which is very annoying because i want all my conversations with dave to be unified regardless of where they were sent from.
    some people have suggested that the answer is to change the caller ID for imessage from your phone no to your email address.
    my problem with this is that all your imessages from your iphone to other iphones will show up as your email address instead of your phone number on the recipients phone, which i don't want and im sure a lot of people wouldn't want.
    anyway in case people are looking for a solution (as i was for ages) i came across a possible one which seems to work:
    delete all existing conversations from that person on both your phone and reciepients phone. from then onwards all messages sent between those 2 people will show in same conversation rather then 2 different ones regardless of where they are sent from.
    i have tried this with wifes phone and after deleting existing conversation on both our phones, all messages i sent her regardless of wether from my iphone or mac all shows in same conversation.
    anyway thats my answer to a possible problem, i also have a question:
    what is the future of messages beta? its a excellent idea, however makes no sense at all if it doesn't sync PROPERLY across all your devices which at the moment it doesn't. surely apple can identify you purely from your apple id, so i can't see why they can't get imessages to sync fully, so all imesseges sent to me and those i send as well all show up on both my phone and on mac.

    Currently Mesages Beta is storing your Messages from any source in two places.
    By default it is saving iChat style transcripts in Your Home Folder/Documents/iChats (this is the default place for the ichats folder)
    It is also storing, at least iMessages, in Your Home Folder/Library/Messages in the form of a data base.
    It seems to be this data base that show you the "History" of the contact you is chatting with you.
    (This can only be accessed by using the Finder's Go Menu and holding the ALT key to be able to select the Library)
    It also seems unclear as to whether it is the Address Book details or something at the Apple Server end that links Phone Numbers with IDs that allows the linking and syncing of the two forms of ID.
    The fact that you have found that clearing all the History of all IDs conversations allows better syncing is interesting.
    As I see it several things need to be considered
    Not only iMessages from Phone Numbers and Apple IDs need to be resolved for syncing but also whether people want the iChat type Buddy list chats to also be collated in that process.
    If iMessages are kept separate from the older iChat style chats in terms of syncing chats on the Mac end there is still the issue of whether Jabber and AIM Chats should be "synced" or collated for the "History" view.
    As I have several Buddies with History at least on AIM chats going back to 2004 and later jabber Chats with some of those it would make for a very long scroll back.
    There would appear to be a syncing issue with iMessages regarding the Name or Phone number that needs to just work and not need all chats to be closed and cleared to then sync  (or if closed/deleted a way of getting one you want to keep back or stored for review)
    A way of deciding what and how much "History" is called back for a Buddy or contact.
    The fact that all Saved Chat for a Buddy will show up does mean you have a useful search tool for certain things.
    However I rarely use Saved Chats for much more than that after about 6 months.
    Spotlight would tend to find it anyway (in the current Storage place)
    If History/Archives of chat are going to be kept in the Library then Spotlight will not be able to Search them.
    Messages will be in Mountain Lion.
    And for that we will have to wait.

  • 16:9 question and 24p question

    I shot some footage on a Canon xl2 in 16:9 and in 24p.
    Regarding the 16:9. I was wondering how to show 16:9 footage on a 4:3 TV with out it getting streched. Can this be fixed in post?
    Also regarding the 24p. the Canon XL2 records in 24p then it uses 2:3 pulldown to record to tape (in 60i)
    What is the best way to caputre this in Final Cut Pro HD?

    DVDSP implementation of 16:9 is clunky in that you have to set the 16:9 settings all over the place (menus, tracks, project, etc.) So be careful. The manual has a lot of information on this subject, to be sure. I'd set everything in DVDSP to letterbox, by the way, not panscan (which is just a crop unless you somehow have encoded pan-scan vector info into your build) unless you've specifcally protected for 4:3 in your widescreen shoot.
    Make sure you set your DVDSP simulator to 16:9 so that you can double check everything with some confidence before you burn.
    Don't worry about setting up the DVD player - almost all commercial movie DVDs are anamorphic so most people's DVD players are set up correctly - you just choose the type of TV in the DVD player setup menu and the letterbox is automatically applied if it's set up for a 4:3 TV (do you still use those 4:3 sets over there in the US?)

  • Secure boot question and user question

    would it be safe and possible to say install just the boot partition to a 32mb sd card keeping everything else on the main hard drive? maybe having the /root on a USB drive to avoid anyone using su to get to it and making it accessible for emergency purposes. i would also encrypt my home folder.
    does the above sound like a viable idea? and i am assuming so long as i install the card reader drivers during the initial setup i can just dd /boot/ over to the sd card.
    also on my arch installs i installed sudo and added my username to wheel which i gave all permissions with password. this should be safe and i should never need to actually su to root correct? or are there some advantages to su to root?

    I'm guessing you might have seen something like this?  I wanted to try that myself, but it apparently only works if your card can be picked up by the mobo as an internal drive.  Supposedly there's a way to hack or flash certain brands and models to achieve this, but I haven't looked into it in a while.  My card reader uses a USB internal connection, so it can't be used as-is: on boot, my BIOS searches only the selected source for the necessary files, so I can't have /boot on /dev/sdb grab the initramfs from /dev/sda1.  It could be entirely dependent on you board and BIOS, or may require extra work, but it's possible.  You'll just need to do some work to get the info for your machine.

    well you need to logon router's setup page, open I.E. and inthe address bar type 192.168.1.1, it would ask for username and password, put "admin"(default password) of router... go to administration tab >> firmware upgrade >> browse for firmware file and upgrade it, reset the router and reconfigure it according to ISP settings...
    ethernet and wireless lights are blinking staht indicates router is communicating withe wired connection as well wireless connection.

    It wouldn't be a script. You're asking about a whole category of functionality, including training the person who answers the emails.
    This could be implemented in a variety of ways, with a variety of capabilities, and with a variety of requirements and levels of efficiency. The choice you use will depend a lot on the hardware you're running on, the server and tools you use for your existing site, the amount of activity you expect, etc.
    If you're using an existing, well-supported application server and web development environment, then I expect that what you're asking for could be built within it pretty easily. It might even be available pre-built. But it's not like there's some generic "q/a tool script" in fifty lines of Java code that you can just dump on any web server and have it work magically in all cases.

  • Powerbook and pc question

    I am moving into a new place with a friend. We are getting comcast and I have a powerbook and airport extreme basestation and he has a PC. We are getting comcast and vonage. I am wondering will it be hard to hook this all up. I mean will I need a router? I am just confused because, i've never hookup a pc and mac before to the same internet connection. Plus I have wireless and he does not so not sure about my airport basestation.

    I wrote a reply to this question and it disappeared.
    No problems connecting the everything together. The airport has an ethernet port in the back and a wan port.
    The cable modem goes into the back of the wan port. Vonage into the ethernet. the vonage router has a couple of ports to make up for the one it is taking up.
    The PC will plug into the back of the vonage router and the PB wirelessly to the Airport. Should the Vonage router not have a spare port - they may have changed things - then in the worst case you just need a 4 port wired router - they are pretty cheap, Netgear Belkin etc - I find Circuit CIty has them quite cheap.
    That's it. Both machines will access the internet perfectly happily as the internet is platform independent - doesn't matter if you have a PC or a Mac. I'm wired up almost the same way at home - only diff is that I have a Belkin wireless router 4 ports ($10 from C City!) plugged into a linksys vonage router into which the cable modem also plugs - this works fine for me. The beauty of routers is that you can daisy chain them - that's networking!

    What connection do I need to use Spotify?
    Spotify can use any connection! Mobile broadband, ADSL, cable modem... I recommend 1M connection or faster, however you can use Spotify also in 384 kbps speed or even lower (when on slow mobile networks, just enable lower stream quality).
    Does Spotify stream on EDGE (2G, mobile network)?
    If you use 160 kbps or lower setting, yes. But keep in mind, network should be near 200 kbps all the time before it's possible without buffering. Recommended 3G and at least 384 kbps mobile speed for 320 kbps.
    I have limited internet. How much bandwidth Spotify need?
    Spotify use P2P, so no one can answer it right. To eliminate data usage, download tracks to Offline (Premium) and from File or Mobile app settings enable Offline mode. Also you can stream in Mobile with lower sound quality. There is also available Spotify Connect sound machines like Pioneer SMA1 and with these you can play Spotify from your mobile using Connect and that does not use P2P.
    Quality 96 kbps => 0.72 MB per minute. (Only in Mobile these days)
    Quality 160 kbps => 1.2 MB per minute. (Free, Unlimited, Premium)
    Quality 320 kbps => 2.4 MB per minute. (Premium. Desktop, some mobile platforms and some other Spotify devices)
    With online streaming you may need a lot bandwidth. But you can also change cache size to 100 GB. This helps keep the network requirements down as it enables more caching. Also this depends on how much you listen music. Try Web Spotify or Mobile Spotify, these don't need P2P for work. Actually these apps doesn't use P2P at all. I hope you enjoy Spotify over your Internet.
    How much Mobile data I need to get to stream Spotify full month?
    If you have Premium, you can download your music to offline mode, no data used after first download. Offline on home wifi or at library etc. public wifi. If you have Premium and don't want to use Offline or don't have one Premium at all, data usage depends on your Internet connection and Spotify plan/settings. For example if you use Automatical sound quality option in Android app. It selects best quality for music on-the-go depending on network type/speed. Basically your music keeps going even on EDGE network at 96 kbps. If you don't want full sound on the go, keep quality in manual eg. 160 kbps only.
    Data usage depends also how much you listen music, basically it is 144 MB in hour at 320 kbps.
    Please keep in mind, if you stream online music one hour in day and in month 31 days it will be:
    96 kbps: 43 MB in hour, 1339 MB (1.3 GB) in month. Only mobile.
    160 kbps: 72 MB in hour, 2232 MB (2.2 GB) in month.
    320 kbps: 144 MB in hour, 4464 MB (4.4 GB) in month. Only Premium.
    If you listen more than hour, it will be more data usage, or if you listen little - less usage. Please keep in mind also that you just don't use Spotify - you may use YouTube, web surfing etc. too. Actual data usage needs is much higher. If Unlimited data is not possible, I suggest 5-10 GB of data, and if you allowed only 1GB - download music to Offline mode to reduce your data needs to minimum.
    How much space I need to Micro-SD for my Offline list?
    If you prefer radio edits, it is almost 8.5GB for 1,000 songs. Basically 32 GB is needed if you believe you will be one day near 3,333 tracks limit of Offline mode / device. Big card is also cheaper than little if you look  at price/size value. Please look at your phone specs, what is maximum card size supported by your phone. In most phones it is 32 GB.
    How to improve playback on Android when outside using mobile network as Internet?
    That's great question. Go to Android, open Spotify, hit Settings and select for Online play quality Automatical. This option chooses best possible sound quality for the time and area you are in. If a bit slower 3G, or even parts in EDGE, playback will be less interrupted. Spotify uses for a while 160 kbps or even 96 kbps, when for 320 kbps no speed available at this time on mobile network. Sadly on GPRS this won't work as it is only 56 kbps network.
    How I can listen music? I created account and there is no search box in site to search music?
    You need to download desktop app before you can listen music from www.spotify.com/download or just use web player https://play.spotify.com/. If you are Premium customer, you can use it also for example in Mobile, in some Spotify Connect speakers, in some smart-tv's etc. Please look into your device advertisements or Spotify site/forum to know which devices support Premium.
    How in the earth I can use Spotify outside my country?
    You need paid subscription to do this, then you can use Spotify without trouble just as long as you pay for it. However keep in mind that you may not be able to renew subscription in new country, so ensure you have enough months. In Free travelling time is limited to 2 weeks.
    How I can delete duplicates from my playlists?

    You can't do this. Spotify is cheap to you, so you help Spotify with server costs. Only Spotify Mobile, Spotify for Smart-TV, Spotify Web, Spotify for some speakers can download tracks from Spotify servers without P2P.

    Good question! Spotify always want to have all music in it's catalogue. But some artists, bands or record labels want to be out of Spotify. I hope that they change their mind! Also you can add missed puzzles as Local files to Spotify.

    Don't worry. Just go to Edit - Preferences and disable the hardware acceleration. Also you can try completely re-install of Spotify. Hope this helps!

    Don't worry. If you use mobile network, ensure with your teleoperator that speed is at least 384 kbps. Unlimited is better. If you are using slow mobile internet, changing play quality in settings to low might help you. If you are at home, try Wifi, as usually Wifi is much faster than these mobile networks. If you are in poor mobile coverage area, try to find better coverage area. Hope this helps! If this problem is all the time, maybe you want to download playlist for Offline use? Then no need for Internet at all!

    Do not worry! Sometimes Spotify just hide songs that are unavailable these days. Those songs can be released again in your country for example in future. You can see all hided tracks - just go to Edit - Settings and untick Hide unplayable tracks.

    What format Spotify use and how music is converted?
    Spotify use a OGG format. OGG is very great format with rich sound. In Premium sound quality is 320 kbps (excluding currently Spotify Mobile, where quality is 160 kbps or 96 kbps) and in Free/Unlimited quality is160 kbps. All tracks are converted from lossless format. And 99,9% of Premium catalogue is in 320 kbps quality.

    Yes, you can hide those. You can also hide Starred tracks and Playlists too! If you need privacy, Spotify provide tools for it. Just go to Edit - Preferences and untick all options: Automatically publish new playlists, Top tracks and Top artists. Privacy is here. And if you want to hide Starred or any Playlist you have - just right-click a Starred or any Playlist in Sidebar of Spotify and click Publish. Then you can go to your nice profile and them all are gone!

    Absolutely. Spotify has agreements with record labels. Anyone listening in Spotify give money for artists, record labels and composers. So if you use Spotify, you can continue to use it. Legal and awesome service. Every track you listen is legal and Spotify keep statistics for payment to right holders - even when you are Offline with Spotify!

    No, not ever. Local files are just for you, Spofy does not collect or download those tracks.

    This is how Spotify is designed to play for free users. You can listen your playlist on Shuffle and in time you will get some track suggestions, these can't be removed from Play Queue, but you may be able to skip these if you have enough skips to do it in hour. Also in mobile you may see ads and hear these also.

    This depends on settings of your device. If in Spotify settings 320 kbps Extreme is enabled, your lovely sound machine will stream at 320 kbps using Connect. It depends on Stream quality, not Download quality. If you want to reduce data usage also in your speaker, just change it (sound quality) :)

    Absolutely not. The Spotify Connect is huge thing. You can listen music using Spotify Connect speakers like Pioneer SMA1 and totally without need to stream using your phone mobile network. The sound speaker can be connected to your wired Internet (in my home with RJ45 to cable modem 100M/5M). You can also use Wifi in some speakers, but RJ45 is preferred as it's more stable :) Actually after you connect your Spotify in phone to speaker, you can start playlist and then forget about it. Or even shut down your phone, your speaker continues to play! Also in future you can add tracks to play queue if you want and these will keep playing for you. Connect also will be available as remote to your PC, you can then remote your Desktop Spotify using your phone :)
    Can I listen Spotify music with my own music player?
    No. Why? This is simple. Spotify use a protected files, so music player like iTunes or WMP can not read those as music files. Only Spotify can understand those files. Also you need to use Spotify, because only this way Spotify can pay for right holders.
    Can I make a CD from Spotify music?
    No. Why? Spotify does not allow you to burn CD when you streaming music. If you want a CD, just purchase it form Spotify and burn a CD with iTunes etc. music player. Of course you can download with Premium your music to Mobile and connect your phone to your sound system and you can start your party then!

    No. Spotify works in this way: you purchase a way to rent music. In Free you can rent music as long as you are Free user. In Unlimited or Premium you can use all it's features as long as you pay. When you stop paying for service, your account will be Free again. For example you start hearing ads and your Premium Offline playlists will be removed. In Fact in Spotify you can stream with your month fee as much as you want. In Free service listen time may be limited.

    Do not panic! All you need is to try another Internet browser like Firefox, IE or Chrome. Also you can try log out first from Facebook and try then again. Spotify will miss you if you go. You are welcome back at any time.

    Make sure you are using a high quality in Spotify's desktop app Settings. Also in some mobiles you can use this 320kbps mode advertised Extreme, so make sure you're enabled it. If after that quality is still bad, clear cache and try again! Also it may worth to try setup with another stereo system etc. I hope you enjoy Premium sound quality!

    Someone asked me will Spotify work on EDGE mobile network in 160 kbps mode.
    I will explain some things out.
    EDGE network is very slow and actually EDGE is for light internet usage. However some operators, like Elisa Oyj in Finland, can handle 200 kbps in EDGE. If so, you can use 160 kbps Spotify without any problems. But keep in mind, some networks may be slow in EDGE and speed may be lower - in this case just use 96 kbps sound quality.
    Personally I would suggest 384 kbps or faster Mobile Internet. Because when you use 320 kbps in mobile, EDGE network isn't enough to handle Extreme quality. The Unlimited is good, but you should be fine with 1GB, just stream then 96 kbps or 160 kbps. I use 0.5M Unlimited 3G Internet and I can say it works like a charm with Extreme sound quality.
    If in your country no way for Unlimited,  you always can download Spotify playlists to Offline mode with your wifi. But I would say there is no need to fast 3G internet like max. 21M packages - Spotify will work fine with 384 kbps in any sound quality and in slow network too. However in this case you might want to use lower sound quality.
    Also remember if you use Unlimited or Free and there no plans to Premium, just ignore those. Free and Unlimited use only 160 kbps and no Mobile or 320 kbps support, so you will be fine with 256 kbps Internet. Personally I suggest to everyone 8M/1M Internet for Home use and to Mobile use something like 0.5M or 1M.
