Full format and backup everytime?

is it possible to have time machine simply erase everything and backup a fresh full backup every time instead of backing up dates and etc?
or should i just use superduper?

  • Full format and reinstall of Lion.

Ok, so I fancied a full format and reinstall of lion - it has an SSD and I wanted to restore it to it's peak performance, while removing all the junk it's acumulated and hopefully fix it's slow wake from sleep. It doesn't have a recovery partition either (blame ccc) so I started up internet recovery and formatted it (I had of course been backing up with time machine). First problem: no FULL format option! Ok, annoying, but I can at least get a nice clean install... second problem: apple can't verify that I own lion (or something to that extent). I didn't buy lion on the store, it came with the computer, so that's probably why, but I really expected better from apple. I was left with one remainin option: restore from backup, which it's still attempting now. Once I've hopefully got my mac to pretty much the same situation I started at, is there anything else I can do? Should I do the same again but just reinstall Lion immediately, instead of trying to format it first?

"In this you can access disk utility and erase your HDD if you want a clean slate." Yes but there are two types of clean slate: the one resulting from a "quick format" and a "full format". The quick format doesn't delete anything, but merks all info as unwanted. This is fine for HDD's as they can just overwrite it, but this is the process that drastically slows down SSD's - they have to read the data, erase it, then write the new data whenever they want to rewrite it, and this kills write speed. I therefore really need at full format. It isn't a bad cable: that's mainly a problem with SATA III drives. It is a MBP not Air. But I DID have to verify my copy with apple... don't ask me why it didn't work. I don't have a recovery partition because I origionally used Carbon copy cloner to clone the HDD onto my SSD, which I now use for time machine backups.

  • How to format and backup Mac & Windows to external drive

I have a LaCie 1 T external drive.  I want to use it to backup both my Mac partition and my Windows 7 partition.  The Windows 7 partition was created using Bootcamp.  I  formatted the drive with exfat from within Lion and then divided the drive into two equal partitions, one for Mac and one for PC. I tried to use Time Machine to back up the Mac data and it seemed to blow away the Mac partition which is no longer visible to Finder and consequently cannot be backed up to. I haven't tried to do anything about backing up the Windows 7 partition. As an aside, one online source I saw said I need to do this setup routine of the external drive from within Windows 7 in order for the drive to be accessible to both operating systems?
    Thanks for any help,

You need to find a Windows backup software that will work with Apple's Bootcamp partition.
On a Mac, Apple does a hack to "fool" Windows into thinking it's on a PC with a Master Boot Record Partition map.
Mac's can only boot from a GUID Partiton map, so there is a hybid MBR installed into the Bootcamp partiton when you set it up.
Traditional Windows backup software won't work when you try to restore Windows because it expects to be a PC with a MBR and runs Linux to restore Windows with. (a Mac can run Linux if Linux knows it's talking to a GUID)
And You can only image backup Windows, not make it a bootable copy on a external drive like you can do with OS X.
So the external drive needs to be formatted with a GUID Partition map and 2 partitions.
1: OS x Extended (J) so you can use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone Lion to it.
2: exFAT so you can save the Windows image file to it.
Now you need to find software that will run in OS X, take the Windows image of the Bootcamp partiton and restore it. There used to be great free software that did this, but since Lion rolled around a lot of good software wsn't updated anymore, guess people figured Apple is closing up like iPads and didn't see the sense in it.

  • Format and install

    Hi,
I am using MAC OSX 10.4.8
I want to full format and install my macbook.
but the OSX installation dosent show me the upgrade/erase and install options. It directly goes to installation.
please tell me a way to full format and install my macbook.

After the Language selection, choose Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu, select the disk drive, click the "partition" tab, click the "Options..." button to choose the GUID partition scheme (needed for Intel Macs), erase the disk, quit Disk Utility, and continue with the installation.

Does the phone backup part of the upgrade contact the Apple servers or something?  I just did a full sync and backup before updating, yet my backup is going on 30 minutes and barely halfway done. What's going on?

I figure that either of those options will result in losing all SMS and data created since the last backup. Not a major loss, but ** annoying when nothing has changed and the time it will take to restore.
When was the last time you synced your iPhone with iTunes since the backup is updated as the first step during the sync process?
Is there anyway to recover this WITHOUT having to do a full restore or set up as new?
    In a word, no.
If I do restore or set up as new, how do I know it's not going to do the same thing tomorrow (like a few other forums threads I've read indicate might happen)?
There is no way to know for certain but I've never experienced the same in the first place. I venture to say having to do this is the exception rather than the rule.

  • Full format on Arch and map badsectors and smart outputs

    Hi.
I would like to ask for your help. Recently i've been worried about my two Seagate Barracuda 14 series drives because smart provided by a smartmontools shows "end to end error" that is critical to a hard drive condition. I've been searching over the www for more info but most of them tells that drives with "end to end error" should be immediately returned for an RMA. My drives works well, even with this smart information, wrong parameter. I read that under windows doing a full format will check drive for a bad sector and it there are spare, than they would be remaped.
I would like to ask for the same thing under linux - how to do a full format to check drive condition, to remove existing bad block/bad sectors when they show up? Doing mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdXY will do the same thinh? Maybe using gparted and do it using gparted gui?
This is my smart from two drives:

I have found on www that "end to end error" means that chip on drive is either damaged, or broken and can't work properly when checking data that are being writed, they are not in match with data recived and stored in cache.
    Could somebody help? Thanks.
In fact, it's just a bad joke from seagate. Two drives, rather new, one with around 2500h and one with only 500h are damaged, and damaged critical according to smart when my older Barracuda 11 has around 25000h and works fine! I don't want to spend fortune to hdd, won't buy red series from WD, won't buy green because i read a lot about broken green series drives...and now Seagate...

From reading around it seems Seagate's SMART compatibility is questionable and highly proprietary.  More than likely smartmontools is misreporting things under the circumstances.  Apparently Seagate has an iso you can download and test your drives with that for a more accurate diagnoses.

Linux diagnostic? Our SMART values are proprietary and do not conform to
the industrie standard. That is why 3rd party tools cannot correctly
    read our drives.
To check on the condition of the drive, download Seatools for DOS (it
boots into Free BSD and works with Linux).
    Here is the download link:
    http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?l … 04090aRCRD
Seatools for DOS is an ISO image file that is burnt to CD. You boot with
that CD and run the long test that will examine every sector on that
drive. If Seatools indicates the drive has a problem, you should
exchange it (it will generate an error code)."
    http://sourceforge.net/p/smartmontools/ … /24435188/
It seems the problem is not very rare.
Yes, they suggested me the same thing on Seagate support but...well...i want to be sure...i just can't belive that seatools is far better than smart reads.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

    No app is required.
    - If you previously turned on FIndMyiPod on the iPod in Settings>iCloud and wifi is on and connected go to iCloud: Find My iPhone, sign in and go to FIndMyiPhone. If the iPod has been restored it will never show up.
    - You can also wipe/erase the iPod and have the iPod play a sound via iCloud.
    - If not shown, then you will have to use the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
    - Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
    - There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.

  • HT4847 iCloud storage and backup is full

I just received a message saying my iPhone storage is full and in order to open up some space I need to follow these instructions.
Go to settings, tap" iCloud" and then tap "storage and backup".
I have not upgraded my phone past 4.3 because of problems my husband experienced when he did, so I don't necessarily want to.
How do I get around it as these "tap" items are not on my phone to select.
    thank you

If you have an email account (@me.com, @mac.com, or @icloud.com) then you have an icloud account.  One thing to check is whether your emails is filling up all your storage.  Log into icloud.com with a computer browser (assuming you do have an icloud account) and check what you have stored.
If you don't have your device connected to icloud, check Settings>General>Usage to see how much of the device's storage is being used up.

  • Is it possible to do slides in portrait format and fill full page?

Is it possible to do slides in portrait format and fill full page?

Are you talking about projecting onto a screen or printing out?
If you're talking about projection, first, you can't display slides in portrait format, as all slides in a presentation are landscape by default. I believe most all presentation projectors are also landscape only (you'd have to turn it sideways in order to project portrait.
Second, you can put a portrait picture in the middle of the landscape formatted slide, but there will be a lot of background showing. You could stretch the image to fill the screen, but that would distort it badly or cut off huge parts of it.
Because of these limitations, you can't have a portrait image fill a landscape slide and fill the full slide.

my mac disk is full and i cant transfer files from Mac to USB. saying the format is not good, how can i change the format and what happened to the files i have on USB?

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.

Imovie is limited to its import formats and does not allow for storing video in any rawformat.  Which means all videos will contain lossy compression applied to the video….with no way to edit full format video.  Is this statement true? Does iMovie support HD 1080p @ 60 fps?

    yes and no!
using the intended Import from Camera routines, iM converts automatically in its very own AppleIntermediateCodec. so, answer is yes.
    but …
    a) Apple claims , aic is non-lossy intermediate codec. working with proRes in FCPX taught me, there are even less non-lossy-ness codecs
    b) iM offers an Archive feature, which is basically a simple Finder/copy operation which 'clones' your SDcards content into some folder on your harddrive; e.g. you can later use these untouched  'raws' in another editor such as FCPX. so, answer is no.
    c) when you 'override' the import routines by manually re-wrapping mts into a mov container, iM handles the 'native' h264s ... so, answer is no.
    d) adding any effect, transition etc. reduces any interlaced source to 540p. (if you're working with 720p source, res is kept) … so, answer is yes. or, in 720p case, no.
    < Johnny Depp's voice >… savvy?
Does iMovie support HD 1080p @ 60 fps?
    via Import from Camera? No.
via re-wrapped mts>>mov? I was told yes, some say no.
one thing to be kept in mind when talking about these 'issues':
iM, this 12€, is meant as a CONSUMER toy tool.
    it supports AVCHD vers1 (=no 1080/60p, no >24Mbps, no 3D).
fingers crossed, we'll see soon some iM/QT/FCPX update for support of AVCHD v2 ........
the main consumer devices are within the specs, iM supports.
using professional equipments makes usage of professional software (FCPX, AP) optional.
    sorry for lengthy answer.

  • HT3910 How to format and erase Lion 10.7.3 completely?

I've erased and reinstalled my Lion 10.7.3 but after rebooting, all my previous programs are also installed. How do I format and erase my HD completely so I get a clean OS like I had when I bought my Macbook Pro?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • I have a need to update my OS. Should I go slowly and move to Lion (10.7) or go full blast and update to Yosemite (10.10)?

I have a need to update my OS from 10.6.8. Should I go slowly and move to Lion (10.7) or go full blast and update to Yosemite (10.10)?

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
OS X 10.7 Lion system requirements
    Purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
To use OS X 10.7 Lion, make sure your computer has the following:
An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended)
7 GB of available disk space
    2 GB of RAM
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.
