Hard Drive Specs for Thinkpad R51 - namely drive height please?

I have a ThinkPad R51 which I love. I run Linux Mint Maya edition. It has been a faithful laptop for me for several years.
My Harddrive apparently is failing - as it makes loud squeels when I try to run the system. I have not been successful in getting my data off the drive - since I can barely load the OS right now. (Right now I can't load it at all)
My old HD is a 30GB Toshiba MK3021GAS.
What is the DRIVE HEIGHT that I need to search for in getting a new HD?
I could live with even a 10 GB drive to get going again - can anyone point me to anything REALLY inexpensive? (I have only $10 today - and maybe $20 on Friday.)
I have a CD of Linux WattOS R6, which I could boot from. However, it doesn't show me the HD when I boot from the CD. Is there any way I can save my data from my HD? I could surive with extracting just a few hundred MB of files. It failed when I was tryihng to copy to a USB Stick this morning.
Thank you in advance.
(I'm writing from my antique iBook G4, which is limping along on a failing HD itself.)

Welcome to the forum!
Your machine will be able to use a SATA III drive, but it will be locked to SATA I speeds unless you
install a modded (non-Lenovo) BIOS that enables SATA II speeds.
As for a 1TB drive, as long as it's 2.5"/9.5mm laptop format, no issues there.
Cheers,
George

  • Creative in the dock over driver issues for older cards and upsetting consumers please read!

To Who this may concern at TOP LEVEL AT Creative's Board It's come to my attention to a very serious issue From Creative, and the story starts from here.
I have just required the Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card so looking to install the latest drivers from CREATIVE'S UK WEBSITE. So I look into the date which is 9/4/200 on Creative's website. However I did abit more investigating into the issues from other consumer's from passed half soaked drivers that Creative are supposed to put right with their half asleep development team(what a joke!!).
AS I did more research? on this issue on the forums and hardware websites, it came across to my attention on a Brazilian I. T. Expert called Daniel Kawakami (surprisesurprise and I don't suppose Creative know anything about him other than trying to kick him the balls for his work to help others with their sound cards very good PR work Creative well done!!!!).So armed with all this information and believe me I have gone into alot of reading in the forums about the issues, and yes Creative Board Of Directors you are entitled to your Copy Rights, for now !!!
So I find out more about this super hero Daniel Kawakami? to Creative's miss givings to put right the Drivers for Consumers let down by Creative, I came across one of the driver updates for the Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card done by Daniel Kawakami, and Bingo most consumer's now have a working drivers by him.
So for all the hard work and precious time this Daniel Kawakami has done for Creative Consumers(including me) YOU SELFISH CREATIVE BOARD OF DIRECTOR'S go and kick him the face, so I will say this to you what about his rights as a creative product consumer? ,his driver copy rights and on top that his right to put things right that your team cannot put right in the first place. This is the EXACT PEOPLE WE NEED IN THIS HIGHLY COMPLICATED IT INDUSTRY, so what do you do you try and do, you bin him.
So Creative I am going to ask some questions and I EXPECT YOU TO ANSWER THEM with me as a CONSUMER OF YOUR PRODUCTS(customer is King not you!!)
    1. The drivers you realised on the 9th April 200 are working drivers for the Audigy 2 zs for windows 7 ultimate.
    2. So how can you convince me that they are working?
    3. At the moment I can only trust Daniel Kawakami's? working drivers, since he has had over whelming praise for his work. What makes me think I can trust you with your drivers.
    4. Your Drivers came out on the 9/4/200, Daniel Kawakami's Drivers came out on 9/4/200 its too close a call, since your development Team are too lazy to put things right, how can you convince me that you did not copy his Drivers into your download Driver website(I would not be surprised if you did, as it would certainly be a cost cutting exercise ,and taking away his copy rights for all the work he has done for nothing!!!)
    5. Are you going to treat customer and consumers better service and support? in the Future, and that includes me,and 3rd party developers like Daniel Kawakami .
The concussion to all of this, there are lessons to be learned by you Creative for your mis givings and the treatment of customers passed and present and especially the appalling treatment of Daniel Kawakami ,this guy deserves far better for his talent. I Have one message for the President Of Creative ,don't you EVER think you can scare me as a customer and also as Registered? disabled deaf person ,and for that reason I have far more powers you will ever have. For what I have read I am so angry and dismayed when someone like Daniel Kawakami is only trying help others ,but to be treated in this way.
It is only right for me to post this ,because You Creative have hurt? alot people and that includes me. I look forward to the comments and p.m.(if I get any) And Daniel Kawakami? I hope you do read this and all the best for the future ,keep doing what you do ,and once again Creative you should be holding your heads in Shame.

    Problemas de memoria superior a 4 gb e tantos outros que Creative no tem respostas;
    Chega a ser vergonhoso que placas onboard como realtek funcionem melhor que placas Creative;
Realmente, antes era um sonho e orgulho possuir um produto CREATIVE, tornou-se um pesadelo e uma vergonha.
Mas enfim o que fazer, apenas esperar um momento de honestidade por parte de Creative.
Flavio Kern - Audigy 2 ZS
Creative will never respond. So it would be fair if Creative would publish his inability to speak and that even where the plates Audigy would work in Vista and 7. But by incompetence, since neither her new adapter works right, if it was to sell is poorly. Problems of memory above 4 gb, and so many others that Creative does not have answers; Daniel and Pax Drivers are alternati'ves, but which also has many limitations. I honestly think this time Creative come publico do a serious story, and describe clearly the limitations of your cards by putting an end-point on expectations, frustrations and forgeries. It is shameful that onboard realtek cards like that boards Creative work better; Actually, before it was a dream and pride have a CREATIVE product, became a nightmare and a shame. But anyway what to do, just wait a moment of honesty from Creative.

  • Is user mode driver mandatory for WDDM 1.1 driver model?

    Dear all,
I am a fresh newbie in Windows driver development .Only one 3 hours of MSDN search experience in Windows Driver. :(
Trying to learn how to write a WDDM driver for a very basic graphics card. What I understood is: we require a user mode driver as well as a display miniport driver as per WDDM 1.1 driver model working. But I have also seen an alternative path like the following:
    Application -> Win32GDI -> Win32K.sys -> Dxgkrnl.sys -> Display Miniport driver (kernel mode driver)
So if I am trying to make a dummy driver up and running with very basic functionality (no 3D support and other advanced features), can I make only the display miniport driver and ignoring the user mode driver installation?
Is this alternative path option possible (only display miniport driver and no user mode driver; application shall use only Win32GDI APIs.)?
Could anyone please answer to my query? I need a very basic driver framework to start with WDDM driver model. Unfortunately, I didn't find any example codes for this category. :( Please please please support.
Thank you for your understanding and patience.
    Regards,
    Dayal

Official answer: WDDM User Mode Driver is always needed.
Inofficial answer: ONLY on Windows 7, ONLY when AERO glass transparency look is turned off, ONLY when NOT running any 3D application nor DXVA video application (e.g. Media Player) a WDDM Kernel Mode Driver operates without the WDDM User Mode Driver loaded.
WDDM User Mode Driver should still be present, but an empty DLL can be used.
This can be used as a starting point for own WDDM driver development. Such a very limited WDDM kernel mode driver can be developed without having to worry about the topic "WDDM User Mode Driver".
PS: For an open source WDDM adapter driver sample, check Virtual Box.

  • Hard drive specs for Time Machine backup

My LaCie external HD has died an ugly death.  So I am in the market for a new drive to use as my Time Machine backup.
I am looking at two Western Digital drives.  One has NTFS file system, the other HFS+.  Does this make a difference in terms of compatibility with my iMac and Time Machine?
I am currently running OS X 10.8.5. but I may upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.  Does that influence this?

Thank you for your quick answer to my question.  One other question:
These hard drives all have usb 3.0 connections.  My iMac has USB 2.0 which will work but is much slower.  It also has a Thunderbolt port and a Firewire 800.  Do you know if are there adapters that allow the usb3.0 to connect to either the Thunderbolt or Firewire ports?

  • Hard drive specs for Pismo?

Hi I would like to upgrade my Pismo with a new HD.
I just wanted to check with the experts that I know what specs to look for.
So, as long as its an IDE laptop drive thats 9.5mm tall I'm ok. Is this correct?
    Thanks!

    Steven,
Yes, Tiger is very compatible with the Pismo and the ideal version of OSX for this machine. Please limit yourself to an HD no larger than 128GB; the BootROM in these older powerbooks are unable to "see" any HD space beyond this limit.
I would generally avoid the Seagate Momentous HDs; there has been a higher than normal failure of this manufacturer's HD in the MacBooks. Although the MacBook uses the SATA HDs and not the ATA/IDE (PATA) used in the non-Intel powerbooks, and the design may be somewhat different, it makes sense just to select another brand.
If absolute speed is a high priority, then go with the 7200rpms; otherwise, I would just buy the 5400rpm drive. The average person, and I include myself, will notice little if any difference.
Other than what I have mentioned, just pick an HD and go with it.

  • Driver needed for Konica Minolta pagepro 1380mf - help please!

    Hi,
I have just bought a brand new imac which I would like to use with my 1 year old printer a Konica Minolta pagepro 1380mf. However, I discovered this afternoon that this model only speaks to windows. I have been trying to make it work all afternoon but to no avail. There are no mac drivers for it that I can find. I am running the latest version of Mac osx. Does anyone know of a solution to this?
I am a new mac user having converted from windows so everything is still a bit alien to me. What I mean is that if you can help, I would be grateful if you can keep it simple.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Since you have a new iMac, you could always run Windoze on it. Otherwise, peruse http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/printing/ and see if there's anything that indicates that your printer is supported.

  • Can not find driver for Thinkpad T500

I can not find driver for Thinkpad T500? Could you please help me?
Moderator edit: Matched Subject to content.

Thanks to the folks at Kepware. I was able to get this working for CompactLogix L32E.
Step 1: In NI OPC Server Create a new Channel. Channel Name can be whatever you want.
Step 2: Device driver will be ControlLogix Ethernet.  You can also enable diagnostics if you want.
Step 3: Network adapter. I used default setting.
Step 4: Write only latest values.  Duty at 10. ( These are default settings and are recommended.)
Step 5: Finish new Channel setup
Step 6: Click on Icon to create new device
Step 7: Device Name can be whatever you chose.
Step 8: Select Device Model in this case CompactLogix 5300
Step 9: Device ID For me was IP Address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX,1,0    (Note the 1 directs path to backplane. The 0 to the slot where processor is)
Step 9: Device timing.  Leave at defaults.
Step 10: Auto demotion leave unchecked.
Step 11: Leave at defaults Do not generate on startup Delete on create and allow subgroups
Step 12: Port and watchdogs at default settings
Step 13: Project options leave at default. (In my case I changed to short as that is what most of my tags were)
Step 14: Create tagname from device.
    Step 14: Finish Device setup.
    You now have two options.
Option 1: Start creating tags as you need them. (This is what I did)
Option 2: Right Click newly created device and select properities.  Then select database creation and click auto create.
Go To Lookout  and create new driver.
    Select OPC Client
Server name will be from dropdown menu. National Instruments:NIOPCServers
    Click okay
You should be done and smiling.

  • BOOT DRIVE ADVICE for MAC PRO.   How Big and Partition Size

So new new Mac Pro (Quad) arrives this week.
I'm doing a drive just for BOOT and another drive (or drives) for data.
The big question is, what size drive should I buy for just BOOT/OS/APPLICATIONS and how much of it should I partition. I want to install everything on the boot drive to be on the outside area of the disc and ignore the inside.... So, do I get a 300GB drive and partition 100GB to use as the boot partition and ignore the rest?
    Any advise would be helpful!
    Thanks!

If you have Final Cut, X-Plane and such, you'll find even 150GB to be small. You want to have plenty of free space for burning DVD-DL, temp space for programs and files, and so that free space never gets too highly fragmented.
A 200GB partition on a 640GB drive seems to be a good choice and it will still maintain 80MB/sec. Still use the rest as an alternate for your data (put it on a sparse disk image).
10K Raptor 300GB (Amazon, $229) is a nice, fast boot drive if you really need it, though most 640GB drives are more than adequate for most people.
If you plan to install Windows, I'd dedicate a drive just for that purpose and not use your boot drive. Not sure if "BOOT" meant just OS/Apps or more.

  • Thinkpad r51 restore

Hi All, Purchased a secondhand r51 had a blue screen, can't get into safe mode and won't run at all, so put win xp disc and tried to boot from disc, after pressing R for the recovery it comes up with Administrator password.
There is no passwords set in BIOS, I thought it could be a hard drive password but there is none there either. I don't really want to wipe drive, if I can even get into it, maybe that's why it was so cheap. If anyone knows of a password that will get me would be appreciated.
I have no recovery disc, was hoping that I could get to the hidden partition that I have disabled in the bios, it's driving me nuts, would luv some help. Thanks in advance

Please recommend company web sites that carry compatible 80GB Hard Drive or larger capacity Hard Drives for ThinkPad T43 Product/Model: 2668Y4F. Lenovo apparently does not carry hard drives for older ThinkPad notebooks.

PATA/IDE laptop drives have gone the way of dodo bird, for the most part.
    This would be my pick:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-160GB-2-5-HM160HC-Hard-Drive-Brand-New-PATA-IDE-ATA-for-notebook-lap...
It will throw a "2010 error" on boot, but will work perfectly nevertheless. I've used these drives exclusively prior to converting my fleet T43p units to SATA.
I'm NOT affiliated with the seller in any way. Proceed at your own risk.

  • Best Solid State Hard Drive for ThinkPad T430s

    Hi all,
I was thinking of replacing the 500gb in my 2 year old t430s with a solid state. Prices have come down.
I was thinking of buy this new one from Samsung, which has about the best reviews of any SSD.
    http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Extreme-2-5-Inch-Warranty-SDSSDXPS-240G-G25/dp/B00KHRYRNM
Doesn't seem very hard to install SSDs and I'd do a fresh install of Windows. But I'm curious if I'd run into any bottlenecks on the t430s with such a high end SSD. I have 8 gigs of ram.
I was also considering this best seller:
    http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Electronics-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-7TE250BW/dp/B00E3W1726/ref=sr_1_1?s=p...
But I'd prefer to shell out 30 bucks more for the top of the line one with better lifespan etc.
    Any thoughts appreciated.
    Thanks.

SSDs provide the most improvement when reading lots of small files, where you need to move the heads and wait for the disk to spin to the right sector.  For most people, booting and shutdown are the tasks most helped.  If you don't need a WWAN card, I suggest you consider using a smaller mSATA card as the boot drive (I use a 256GB) and keeping your 500GB drive for data.  mSATA drives are available up to 1TB

  • Maximum hard drive size for 350 MHz slot loading?

    Hello,
What is the maximum hard drive size for a 350 MHz slot loading imac?
I am aware of a 128 GB limit on imacs. Does the 128 GB hard drive limit apply to all imac CRTs or just the earlier models?
Here are the specs of my imac:
    Blueberry 350 MHz
    Slot loading CD-ROM drive,
    6 GB hard drive
Is the maximum hard drive size limit of 127GB apply to this particular model?
    Thanks

Yes, the last CRT iMac was in 2001. The first machines with built-in greater than 127 GB support were released in June 2002, as this article explains:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
So all CRT iMacs have that limiation.

The 8 GB limit is explained here:
