Home directories not being created

Hi,
I am having trouble creating home directories for users on my OSX Server Tiger 10.4.4 running on a mac mini.
Home directoried do not seem to be created for users on my Open Directory.
I have configured my server to be an Open Directory master. I have no other Open Directory replicas/Servers running.
I have set up and configured DNS. It appearts to be working correctly and can resolve my server name to the local IP (10.1.1.X) and give me a fully qualified domain name.
When accessing users on my OpenDirectory via the work group manager the directory name comease up as "LDAPv3/127.0.0.1" (local host possibly the problem).
When I click on the "Create Home Now" button and hit save, the home dirs are not created.
I have checked to make sure that the home directory is shared (owner root) and it seems okay.
I have read some other threads on topics similar to this, but have had no luck. I would appreciate any help in trying to fix this problem.
Please let me know if any further information s required.
Cheers

I had the same issues you've described in this thread. It turned out that I had named my server "morris", and when the client machines went to mount a user's home folder, they attempted to mount /Network/Servers/morris/Users/whoever. When I went to the Finder, I clicked on the Network icon, then the Servers icon, and listed under there was "morris.domain.com" (where domain.com is your own local domain), but not "morris". So it appeared that there was a name mismatch.
The fix was easy. I started up Server Admin, clicked the machine I wanted to fix, clicked the Settings tab in the right pane, the Network tab up top, and changed the "Computer Name:" field from "morris" to "morris.domain.com". From that point on, my login problems went away.
It seems that the Server Admin-set "Computer Name" has to match the machine's FQDN in DNS.

  • User Home Directory not being created when "Create Home Now" button hit...

    This is a cross post, since I was not sure where this should end up since it touches two pieces- Open Directory and User Management. Any help would be appreciated!
    I am running OS X Server 10.5. All of my user accounts have been migrated over along with their home directories. Problem is that when creating new users and then assiging a home directory the system does not actually create the directory.
    Currently all users are setup to have their home directory setup here:
    afp://172.16.110.100/Users/'username'. The Users folder has been setup to automount, and all users that have folders can be accessed without issue.
    The problem is when I create a new user, select the aft://172.16.110.100/Users option and then select "Create Home Now" button and save as it requests... it does not create the directories.
    I have even tried to change the Home patch to make it local to see if it was an network issue, and used the /Users choice and it will not create the directory in that way either- both location go to the same place.
    The system was obviously able to create the local admin account and directory admin account home folders without issue when the system was installed.
    The permissions for the "Users" folder are as follow:
    directory admin = Read and Write
    local admin= Read and Write
    system user (root)= Read and Write
    admin group= Read Only
    everyone group= Read Only
    The system is in production, so any kind of server resets need to be done after 5pm, so I have not been able to reset AFP service.
    Currently the only services running are AFP, SMB and Open Directory.
    All users have their entire home directories located on the server, and login over Directory Access on their clients, so all user accounts are stored on the server. No one is having issues accessing their files or logging in.
    I just can not create new home directories when I create new accounts.

    You do not have to be logged on as the root user to do this. Launch the terminal and type-
    sudo createhomedir -a
    I run an XServe with Tiger server ( 10.4.11) and this has been the workaround I have been using.
    Good luck.

  • Home directories not fully created - AD with OSX server

    Hope this makes sense.
    I'm setting up a network in a school. We've an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.6.4. So that students can move seamlessly between our windows network and this, we've extended the AD schema and have the Server bound to AD. Clients are running 10.6.4, bound in a triangle with the Mac Open Directory and AD. So far, so good, all works fine.
    I've been able to set preferences and network home paths with no major issues and scripted to get around problems with using iMovie. However as we've been awaiting some replacement hard drives to set up a new RAID, the home paths have been set to the share automatically created for Users - so afp://SERVER/Users
    Now our new hard drives have turned up. The RAID is setup and working. I've created a new folder to store home paths - just to test with one user initially. I shared this path 'StaffData', enabled it for automount via afp, in protocol I've enabled guest access for afp. I copied the permissions set for the original /Users directory we were using. In WGM I've changed the home path for this user to afp://SERVER/StaffData, saved, then rebooted the client.
    When I then login with this user it created the top level home directory - afp://SERVER/StaffData/USERNAME - and then a subfolder for /Library and /Desktop. No other folders are created (Music, Movies, Photos, Documents are all missing). I'm able to get it to generate Music when I load iTunes, but the same doesn't happen for iMovie or iPhoto.
    I'm guessing its a permissions issue? When I switch the home folder back to the server's /User directory it creates all the home folders without any issues. Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution to this?

    Yep, I always get an error "The home directory could not be created because an error occurred". Always had that, even on the original /Users share that worked.
    Kind of found a way around, have written a script to run at login that checks to see if Pictures, Movies, etc folders are present, and if it doesn't it just makes a new directory with that name. It's a bit of a bodge, but seems to still work. Would still love to have another proper fix eventually, but for the time being it's solved the immediate problem I had!
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Home Folders Not being Created Correctly

    I'm having some sort of major issue with my directory and/or afp setup.
    I'm trying to create new users and the home folder won't be created at all. If I change the permissions (give write access to the user's group) on the root of the share that hosts the home folders it will create one but it is mangled. The home folder only conatins a Library and Desktop Folder. Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public, and Sites are missing. Also the permissions on this newly created home are mangled being 700 instead of 755.
    All Existing Users are functioning okay but creating new home folders is broken. It has been a while since I've needed to create new users. I'm worried it may be hard to isolate the cause and effect. I have done software updates 10.4.6 and now 10.4.7. Also I changed this machine to handle local DNS.
    Any Ideas?
    XServe G4 1.0 Single 500GB Mirrored RAID on Internal Drives 10.4.7 Server

    We also have this problem, and before I go and re-edit the home folder entries for each of our 600-odd users, I'd appreciate if you could confirm that this solution is going to work for me...
    Troubleshooting another problem, we applied the x.4.6 update about the same time as the Network Mounts were turned off then a restart and turned back on again. A bad combination.
    Faced with a Monday morning "None of the students can log in" crisis ("you are unable to log in to the user account "username" at this time..."), and thinking that the problem had been caused by my turning the network mounts off, I discovered that student mount points now show (in WM's Home tab) as "afp://10.224.96.2/Students" where they used to be "afp://mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz/Students".
    The easy fix to the problem (not knowing about artnum 303697 at that point) was to reassign the home folders to the 10.224.96.2 home. (when you don't know what to do, you do what you know how to do). This got the users happily working again, although there were all sorts of strange problems relating to disk quotas that some users had to work through.
    a few days later the log entries about DNS were noted, artnum 303697 applied, and changeip fixed those things. hostname responds correctly as mainserver.westlandhigh.school.nz. Everything ran reasonably well for the next couple of months, although the AFP/CPU hogging problem mysteriously appeared...
    x.4.7 seems to have solved the AFP/CPU hogging, but now we've discovered a problem creating home folders for new users.
    Tim's fix on 3rd August shed some light... An interesting quirk of using Presets is that we still have a Student preset that puts the FQDN name in the home folders list. So we can leave the FQDN home folder selected, click Create Home Now, and on Save, the folder is created. But the student can't login: "you are unable to log in to..."
    Change the mount point to the IP number, Save, and it almost works - the system tells the user they are already logged in to another computer... Selecting Allow simultaneous login from Advanced solves this problem, but leaves the system open for the student to attempt to log in twice, with the potential for havoc there. It's also not a wonderful work around as the other staff who sometimes enter new users are likely to miss one or more of the extra steps...
    I guess that I'm going to have to turn Network Mounts off in Sharing, and then turn them on again to get the right set of mount points showing in Accounts/Home, and then work my way back through all the students and point them back to the FQDN mountpoint again?
    Is it likely to be worth the pain? Will it cause some other problem to arise? Is there an easier way?

  • Wiki directories not being created for groups

    I am trying to get the wiki service working for a few groups on my 10.5 server and not having much luck with it. I've enabled the wiki and blog services in Workgroup Manager for three of the groups on my server, but only one of them seems to have the corresponding directory tree created in /Library/Collaboration/Groups/
    All three groups show up on the website. One works completely, but if I click either of the other two I just get a "404: No group with that name (groupname) hosted on this server" error page.
    I tried faking it out by copying the directory structure from the one working group into a directory for one of the other groups, but that didn't seem to trick the server into working. I've tried restarting the Web server with no apparent effect.
    What triggers the creation of the directories inside /Library/Collaboration/Groups/ and why is it not happening sometimes?

    I have been having the same set of problems. After playing around for a couple of hours here is what I did to solve most of these:
    1. Make sure that you have the full Domain Name (www.example.com) for your website in the web/general section of server admin. I just had example.com at first which caused some of my problems. Also, when accessing the site make sure you enter the full domain name (www.exmaple.com) into your browser. Omitting the www caused me to also get a 404 message when trying to access my groups.
    2. Make sure that you have your server setup as an Open Directory Master.
    3. Make sure that your users and groups are not created in a local directory but instead are done in the LDAP. I had my users and groups created in the local directory which caused them not to properly work when I was trying to select users/groups in the Web Services section for my sites.
    P.S.
    Maybe I am just a little ******** but I think Apple could have made all this a little easier or at least documented it a bit better!

  • Inbox folders not being created from msf files

    Last week, I noticed that my Inbox folder files weren't appearing in my profile. I posted a generalized question here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/996903
    The response I received didn't help that much. The folder I created appeared on the remote mailbox as empty folders.
    My mail account is synced via IMAP to a remote Zimbra mail client using STARTTLS. I can view my Inbox. The other folders in my Inbox account are not visible. I can send and recieve messages from my INBOX.
    When I select "Manage folder Subscriptions" In the account options, I can see the folders. When I select them, and click the "Subscribe" button, nothing happens.
    Inspecting my IMAP directory, I see the following structure:
    ~/.thunderbird/13zr0oo0.default/ImapMail/mail.<zimbra_account>.com:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 matthewe matthewe 1238 May 2 10:38 Archives.msf

    The msf files are created when I click the "Subscribe" button but subsequent Mail files containing the mail data are not (note that non-msf files exist only for "INBOX".)
    Removing .msf files and restarting Thunderbird has no affect.
    When I launch, the errors console reports the following three errors:

  • XMP files not being created with DNGs...

    I'm used to using Bridge with ACR to process Nikon NEFs. But a recent camera update has me experimenting with converting the D3's NEFs to DNG files and editing them with CS2 and Bridge 1.04 which works better on my system. I've also experimented with CS3 and Bridge 2.1.1.9 with the same DNG files.
    In both cases XMP files are not being created when working with DNG files. I have enabled "Save image settings in : Sidecar ".xmp" files" turned ON. But they do not seem to be generated and I assume the ACR adjustments are being embedded in the DNG file. Meanwhile doing edits on NEF files continues to create .xmp files as expected.
    I find .xmp files to be very useful and I'm wondering why they're missing with DNG files? Are they hiding somewhere other than in the same folder that the images reside in?
    Thanks.
    Russell

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
    Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
    When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
    So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
    I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
    Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
    Thanks for the help Kees :-)

  • Itunes 11 shows zero photos in Aperture and ApertureData.xml not being created in library

    I've tried to do some trouble shooting of this problem. I've rebuilt permissions, I've repaired and rebuilt the Aperture library, I've made sure sharing previews is always for iLife and iWork, I've created a new library, switched to it and switched back and I can't get iTunes to see my albums and pictures from my iPhoto library when I try to sync through Aperture. What I have found is when I created the new temporary library and loaded one pic into it, a file in the package contents called ApertureData.xml is created, which isn't created in the iPhoto libary, it has AlbumData.xml. iTunes does recognize the temp library and photo. I deleted the AlbumData.xml, but it was just recreated. It seems Aperture is supposed to be creating a file that it isn't. Any help would be appreciated, I'm trying to migrate from iPhoto to using Aperture exclusively to manage photos and sync with devices. All software is up to date. Thanks.

    in case anyone searches and finds this question, but importing by iphoto library to aperture into a new library, I fixed the problem. I do not know how to fix the original issue of the aperturedata.xml not being created in the origianl iphoto library.

  • Class not being created when running from jar

    Hi all,
    Tech info first:
    IDE: Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8
    Plaform: windows xp
    I have created a Swing app, that connects to a com port(using the RXTXcomm). now, when I run the app in the IDE, everything is fine and dandy, but, when I run the jar file, the application loads, but the class in the app which deals with the com port is not created. here is the code:
        private static void createAndShowGUI() {
            //Make sure we have nice window decorations.
            JFrame.setDefaultLookAndFeelDecorated(true);
            Main receiver = new Main();
            receiver.getPropertiesFromFile();
            //Create and set up the window.
            frame = new JFrame("RFILOG RFID Empfnger");
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            frame.setContentPane(receiver.mainPanel);
            frame.setJMenuBar(receiver.createMenuBar());
            frame.addWindowListener(receiver);
            frame.setLocationByPlatform(true);
            //Display the window.
            frame.pack();
            frame.setVisible(true);
            portListener = new RFIDReaderComm(receiver, "COM3");
            portListener.getConfiguration();
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            //Schedule a job for the event-dispatching thread:
            //creating and showing this application's GUI.
            javax.swing.SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
                public void run() {
                    createAndShowGUI();
    portListener in the createAndShowGUI() function is an interface level parameter and is the class that is not being created. There is no error message.
    If I move the two lines that deal with the port listener before the frame.pack() line, then the GUI is not even loaded, and when I view the processes in the task manager, the process starts and then quits without anything becoming visible. So from this I guess there is a problem with creating the class when running from a jar, but without any error messages, I have not a clue where to start...can anyone help?
    thanks in advance.

    Well, some more info, so maybe someone can come up with some tips for me...this is really important, and any help is greatly appreciated.
    This is obviously a classpath problem. After running the my jar file with java -jar I finally got the error NoClassDefFoundError
    Kind of obvious I suppose. But, I cannot seem to get the two jar files I need into the classpath. I have tried the following:
    Updating my computers CLASSPATH with the relevant paths - not working
    Trying to get the Sun Java Studio Enterprise to build the required jar files into the final package - cannot get this to work
    Tried updating the manifest.mf in the following way:
    Created a text file Manifest.txt with the lines:
    Class-Path: RXTXcomm.jar
    Class-Path: BrowserLauncher2-10rc4.jar
    ran the command (in the same directory as Manifest.txt):
    jar cfm RUFILOGScanner.jar Manifest.txt classes/*.class
    but this does not work either. When I run: jar tf RUFILOGScanner.jar all I get is:
    META-INF/
    META-INF/MANIFEST.MF
    classes/
    classes/CRCCalculator.class
    classes/Main$1.class
    classes/Main.class
    classes/RFIDReaderComm.class
    classes/URLDialog$1.class
    classes/URLDialog$2.class
    classes/URLDialog.class
    the classes I want added are not there. Plus, (I think this is because I am running SE8) the manifest.mf is not in a folder called META-INF. In fact, I have no folder called META-INF. Is this significant?
    Please, can anyone help me?

  • Nodes not being created?

    I am having a problem with my laptop. I had this issue with my USB stick which was fixed by manually creating nodes (discussed here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … highlight=). However, upon trying other usb devices that work just fine on my desktop, I have the same result as I did with the usb stick. The nodes are not being created in /dev/ even though dmesg shows that the usb device was connected. I have a custom kernel and hotplug is NOT installed.
    Any ideas on where to look with this? I have tried reinstalling udev and upgrading the kernel. Thanks for any help,

    hey jskier, what exactly did you have to enable in the kernel to get it working? I am having the same problem and cannot figure it out.
    Thanks.
    First, my apology for not mentioning what I did. My laptop is in for repairs, but from what I recall I just enabled CONFIG_HOTPLUG located at General Setup >> Support for hot-pluggable devices. I use 2.6.14, so if you can't find it there it may be somewhere else for different kernel versions. Good luck!
