How do I fix a loose USB port?

Can users fix these on our own? Or do we just make a Genius Bar appointment?

You will have to make an appointment to take it in, if the computer is covered by AppleCare or the original 1 year warranty this should be covered.

The usb ports on the right, next to the power jack, are on a daughterboard and fairly easily replaceable but the left usb port next to the HDMI is on the motherboard. The only way to repair it is to resolder it to the motherboard. Good luck.

  • How do I determined if the USB ports are working?

How can I determine if the USB ports are working.  Macbook Pro i7.
Thanks for any help.  This is a new computer to me migrating from a PC system.

Blessings to those who are able to reply with possible answers.   I am sorry....but I have spent days working on getting my two USB ports to work also.  I basically use the USB ports for a wireless mouse and various flashdrives/memory sticks.  I have a MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard 10.6.8  I have tried software update, SMC and PRAM resets, battery reset, hardware test, creating a new user account....and browsing and reading numerous discussion boards.....awgh!  I have stopped short of using my install DVD (fear of loosing data), upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion (some fear of loosing an application that might not be compatible), contacting an Apple Store (AppleCare or whatever--live 2 hours away + fear of expense), and of course, trashing the laptop.  Does anyone out there have any possible solutions?   I see I am not alone.  --A frustrated first-time Apple products owner.

  • Anyone else have a loose USB port?

I bought my 13" MacBook Pro about a month ago or so, It's the latest refresh of the MacBook Pro 13" line. I have an i5 2.4ghz pro. w/ 4gb of RAM, 500 HD and Lion of course. So just the other day I noticed that one of the two USB slots I have on the left side of the computer is very loose. It's the USB port that is closest to the SD card slot. Basically if I plug in a device to it I notice A LOT of wiggle room in there. Not sure if anyone else is having this issue since the computer is fairly new. Anyways if I plug in that same USB device to the other USB slot it doesnt wiggle nearly as much as the other one. When a device is plugged into the loose port and wiggled it doesnt disconnect or anything like that, it's just loose and I know it doesnt seem like a huge problem but when you pay 1200+ for something you dont expect things like this. Anyone's input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I'm most likely going to pay a visit to the Genius Bar.

That's what I would do.  Loose usb ports aren't normal.

  • EMac to iMac - How do I transfer data when USB ports don't work?

I just bought a new iMac to replace my old eMac and I need to transfer the data from the eMac to the iMac - here's the problem - the USB ports on the eMac aren't working, the devices work fine like keyboard & mouse but the USB ports are dead. I can't hold down any keys as it starts up to make it a fire wire device etc. So how can I do this??
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How do I add a fourth USB port to my iMac?

I want to be able to use four, USB game controllers on my iMac. I have only three USB ports. How do I add a fourth port?
    thanks!

There's an extra port on Apple USB keyboards. For something like a game controller, that should work for one of them. If you remove the mouse while gaming, or get a wireless Bluetooth mouse, then there are two USB ports on the keyboard. If the remaining ports are not enough, then you'll have to get a USB hub. You should get one that has it's own power supply, rather than a cheaper one that is powered only by the connection to the Mac.

  • Anyone know how to monitor power used on USB Port?

I have an external quickertek usb wireless device that keeps shutting down my Macbook pro. It runs fine for a few days and then locks the entire system up. Quicktek made me a special device with an external power adapter thinking the problem was the USB port being asked for more power than it could deliver but the system is still crashing. I'd like to monitor my power output on that single USB port to see if the new device is really working properly but not sure how to measure power consumption on a usb.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible and if so how?
    Thanks,
    glenn

thanks guys, I'm not sure how accurate the actual current power being used is as it seems to always say 500ma but I'll play around with it and see if I can get it to work for me.
    glenn
Remember that 500 ma is the limit, so if a device attempts to draw more, it most likely will be current-limited at .5A.
    At least it's a start.

  • How much power can deliver the USB port on AirPort Express?

I am developing an appliance that requieres access to a WiFi router and a power source (UL 60950-1 compliant) of less than one watt (100-200 mA @ 3.3V) to power my own WiFi device, and the AirPort Express can be the right device to solve both problems with minimun overhead. The problem is that I cannot find the specification of the current / power limits of its USB port.
To check if it can provide the usual five unit loads, I tried to charge an iPhone 4, but it fails showing the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory", and an external 2.5" HD which requires 500 mA causes the following message to appear on AirPort Utility:
    USB Power
A device connected to this AirPort base station's USB port requires more power than this AirPort base station can provide. Plug the device into a power supply if possible, or connect it to a powered USB hub.
    Any insight will be welcome.

Never mind - I tried "rebooting". I hate it how that always works!

  • Loose USB Port Connection

I bought a brand new Playbook 32GB today and took it out of the box to charge it. I used the supplied charger to plug it into the wall. I found that the charger had a very loose fit laterally and can wiggle several degrees in each direction. The charging cable does not fit snugly into the port. This is obviously concerning due to the fact that it's brand new and will only get looser over time. The reason for the loose fit is not a loosely secured port inside the unit.  Upon closer inspection it appears that the micro usb port is not crimped to the trapezoidal shape of the micro usb head. The small metal frame is more of a full oval. I would guess this is a sign of a shoddy production mistake. Can anyone else comment on if their port is crimped to shape or experienced the same thing. A link to a photo is below. Please advise. Thank you.

I had the same thing happen to me mine was not the Playbook but the AC adapter. I called RIM and they sent me a new AC adapter it works now.  If you have a newer Blackberry smartphone you can use that charger or charge it using the usb cable.

  • Loose USB port cage and flickering home/menu/back/search button lighting

I just got this phone today, as I switched over from T-Mobile, immediately I noticed the USB cage that goes around the port to charge the phone is loose and can be shaken quite easily, also when you look at your 4 home touch keys at the bottom, they almost appear holographic because they change brightness, not sure if that's supposed to be that way or not. Trying to decide if I should call for an exchange or not. On top of hearing myself during calls, not so sure about this phone at the moment.....

Thank you SydneyK for your reply.
OP/ If you are having issues with your new device keep in mind you can always exchange your device during its return and exchange period. If you purchased the device directly from Verizon Wireless you have 14 days to decide if you would like to exchange the device.  If your device was purchased through a third party vendor please refer back to them for further information on their exchange policy.

  • How to load configuration using Cisco USB port???

on USB-flush configuration there. I try to download it gives this:
    Switch#copy usbflash0: 3560-ST
    Source filename [3560-st]?
    Destination filename [3560-ST]?
%Error opening usbflash0:3560-st (File not found)
What is the Problem? flash formatted on most Cisco (it has decreased in numbers from 16 GB to 2.75 GB)???

Syntax is the one as Chandu poined out.
However, i see there is a space between usb0: and the filename.
    "Switch#copy usbflash0: 3560-ST"
Make sure there is no space in the syntax above and also the file name is correct.

  • How can I fix a fried USB bus?

After I moved, I erroneously connected an adapter that puts out 12 volts (from one of my external hard drives) to a powered USB hub that was supposed to have a 5 volt adapter. (I didn't think that you could do that...I thought they were all sized differently). When I connected it to my MacBook pro...everything went dark, and it cannot be restarted or booted. No trickle light showing in the front...nothing. Battery is fully charged. I tried all the normal remedies. Zap pram, hold down power button without battery and an apple technician did that other reset.
Stupid me also managed to fry the USB bus on my iBook before realizing the problem...and then i realized that  last week I did it to my airport extreme.
    I'm in a jam...any ideas?

Only one. Buy all new equipment as you killed all you now have.
