HT3728 No status light at all on Airport/Time capsule. I can plug internet cable directly into bac of my MAC and have internet access no problem. Is my Airport dead and need to be replaced??

I have NO status light on my Airport/Time Machine, I unplugged the internet connection from back of Airport and plugged directly into my MAC and am able to get to the internet just fine.
The Airport is almost 6 years old
Is my Airport dead and just need to get a new one??

Is my Airport dead and just need to get a new one??
Unfortunately, yes.  On the upside, your Time Capsule lasted about twice as long as normal.

  • I have a rMBP that needs to be backed up.  The Wi-Fi in my house is poor and I do not have an Ex. Hard Drive.  I want to get the new Airport Time Capsule, but can you accomplish it's benefits wirelessly?

    So...
I have a modem across the house and my room is at the opposite side.  I believe that you have to connect the Airport Time Capsule via modem cable in order for you to appreciate the benefits of the boosted up Wi-Fi.  However, I want the airport time capsule in my room, without having any extra cables plugged into it AND also benefit from the Wifi boosts, as well as back it up wirelessly.
Is there any way to do this?  I was reading up on it and there are search queries bringing up "bridges" and all that stuff, but I haven't found a clear answer on it.
    So, to recap:
I want the Airport Time Capsule to not only back up my rMPB and help my wifi signal out, but to do all of this with no additional cables having to be plugged in.
    Thanks.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups and it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Unfortunately you do feel left out in the dark sometimes that is why I hope you can respond with a solution?

  • Airport Time Capsule 3TB can't connect to modem via ethernet

    Hi all,
Thanks in advance for any assistance on this issue ...
I am having extreme difficulty in connecting my Airport TC to my modem via ethernet.  Ideally, I want to use it to extend the range of my wifi, as well as back up my machines.
I can't get the AP TC to add on to an existing network in initial set up as , even though the option is available, the Airport Utility (6.3.2) doesn't seem to keep it selected, and wants to create a new network.
When I create the new network, my internet connection drops out, even though the modem indicates that it is connected.  I then edit the internet connection in AU by telling it to extend the existing network (add in the SSID etc) which picks up the internet connection again, but then the Airport TC drops out, and all I get is a blinking amber light and a message saying no configured Airport Base Stations detected, continuing to search.
I have no doubt that it is something I am or am not doing.  I have soft, hard and Factory reset the TC, reset the modem, changed cables, pretty much everything my tiny brain can think of.
I have looked through the support pages and follwed thier advice, with no luck.
    Help please.

I  can't get the AP TC to add on to an existing network in initial set up as , even though the option is available, the Airport Utility (6.3.2) doesn't seem to keep it selected, and wants to create a new network.
"Add" would be used for a wireless connection....and you indicate that you are using Ethernet to connect the existing modem/router and Time Capsule together....so the correct setup would be to create a new network using the exact same wireless network name and password as your existing network.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the current modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Here, I am assuming that the TC will be located at least a room or two away from your main wireless router. If it is located any closer, there will likely be wireless interference issues between the two routers. The wired connection between the modem/router and Time Capsule must be maintained.
AirPort Utility will suggest a setup that looks somewhat like this.....except you will see a Time Capsule instead of an AirPort Express as illustrated below:
Network Name would be the name of your existing wireless networik
Base Station Name is a device name that you want to call your Time Capsule
Password is the wireless password of your existing wireless network
    Verify confirms that password
Click Next and the setup utility will auto configure things for you in a minute or two
When you see the message indicating Setup Complete, click Done and you should have a green light on the TC.

  • Stuck in calculating time remaining, what do i do, its my second airport time capsule that i purchased as the first had a faulty hard drive, why is this soo hard!

Help please,i am thinknig of just returning it and getting a less expeecsive and easier one to use.

    Mavericks is the pain here.
It can lose the network connection half way through a backup.
When you connect by ethernet (good to get that.. hope it is the thunderbolt to ethernet).. did you turn off the wireless.. this is important.. nothing changes if the wireless is still on.
I recommend you start over. Keep the wireless on for this part.
    Stop the backup.
    Factory reset the TC.
Redo the TC setup but this time use all short names, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
I know the airport utility will suggest apple names..
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.
    Don't fall for it.
    Use TCgen5
For wireless name use TCwifi (or if you want more control, TC24ghz and change 5ghz to TC5ghz).
    Wipe the current TM setup.
Use A4 to reset it. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
With wireless off now and just ethernet connection try the backup again.
No luck manually mount the TC hard disk in finder. Go/Connect to Server.
AFP://TCname.local (replace TCname with your new nice short name.. and use the domain which is local by default).
    OR
Use AFP://10.0.1.1 (Replace with whatever IP the TC uses.. but it must be static.. easy for router mode.. not so easy if the TC is in bridge mode).
The Computer will request the password.. type in whatever password you used for disk access.. by default it ithe device password. If you did not change it then default is public.
This setup has worked for other people.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5951390?tstart=0
I cannot guarantee you won't need to reboot the TC oocasionally as it does fall over.
There are other bits that I keep forgetting..
Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local for both wireless and ethernet in the computer.
Once you finish the main backup the short incremental backups can work over wireless.. so just turn wireless back on.

  • I just bought a mac book pro and airport time capsule. Which one should I turn on first to get it going. We do have an existing router and old PC in the house.

    Hi
I just brought home a mac book pro 13" with retina and the airport time capsule . What one should I turn on/ hook up first? We have an existing router in the home and an old PC.
    Suggestions?

Turn off you cable/DSL modem, your computer, and the old router. Disconnect the computer's Ethernet cable from the old router. Replace the old router with the Time Capsule. Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port on the Time Capsule. Connect the computer's Ethernet port to one of the LAN ports on the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable.
Turn on the modem and wait until the status lights indicate connection with the ISP. Turn on the Time Capsule and wait for the amber light to begin flashing. Open Airport Utility in your Utilities folder to configure the Time Capsule.
If a user guide came with the Time Capsule I suggest you follow it's instructions.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

  • Windows 8 not printing on Airport Time Capsule

Windows 8 will not connect with a printer through the Airport Time Capsule.

    Ok, thank you.
I am assuming that this printer shows up correctly on the Printer tab in the AirPort Utility ... correct?
Have you updated the Windows 8 version of the printer drivers from the manufacturer's support site yet? If not, please do. If, per chance, HP does not have Windows 8-specific drivers for this printer may be an indication that it is not supported, especially when connected to an AirPort router.
Finally, have you installed Bonjour for Windows on your laptop? If not, please do.

  • Airport (TIme Capsule) not connecting to iMAC running windows XP

I have an iMAC that runs both OS X and Windows. My router is an airport (Time Capsule)
I can wirelessly access the router when running OS X, but when I run Windows XP I can not. If I plug the cable from the cable modem directly into the iMAC when running XP, it works fine.
The airport (Time Capsule) shows up in the wireless setting with a strong signal, but when I try to connect to it; I get "Wireless router is out of range". The airport sits next to the computer.
    Any suggestions.

Airport time capsule 2 TB. All is connected and Wi-Fi is working but light still flashes amber rather than solid green. I have tried to reset but this still happens. Is there a way to fix this or do I need to?

You want to see a green light on the Time Capsule.
Once you have set up the Time Capsule initially, a flashing amber light indicates that the Time Capsule has a message for you....possibly about a network condition or notice of an update that is available.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the amber dot and another window will appear to provide the current status....along with suggested actions to remedy the flashing amber light.

  • My airport time capsule did not set up successfully, and then status light flash amber

    Hi, Guys
I am the first time user of the time capsule, please help how to proceed?
I have set up the first time and my airport time capsule does not set successfully, then I try to reset to factory setting. After this, although I use the ethenet cable to connect the router to the airport, the status light flash amber, always, even after the reset.
Also, I can see that airport time capsule base station from the wireless network when airport is plugged in. However, when I want to access to it.

Thanks for your guidance, but the product is really anoying. First, I am sure that the airpor utilities is 6.3.
and I also follow your instruction that to set the IPv6 as local link mode. But still get the same error as mentioned in my first post.
Therefore, I have tried to use the bridge mode but could not find it, and therefore still can not set it up successfully, even though I reset the factory again(press the reset button 5 secconds at least).

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite and now need to upgrade iPhoto. I have an Airport Time Capsule sitting on my desk that I have not yet employed to backup all my (thousands of) photos. I know, I am a fool. That aside, will I lose my photos in the upgrade? I am desperate to backup my photos and now wonder if I should revert back to my previous operating system. Help!

iPhoto Library is essentially a large datafile in which your photos are stored. iPhoto is an application you use to do things with the photos stored in the datafile. If you backup iPhoto Library then you have backed up all the photos stored in the library. It's iPhoto that links you to all those photos stored in iPhoto Library. All you need do is to copy iPhoto Library to a backup drive. If you are doing regular backups, then you are already making a copy of the iPhoto Library on the backup drive.

  • I have just got an Airport time Capsule for back up how do I do it? Do I put the ethernet cable into the back of my sky hub because when I do that the amber light on my Time Capsule flashes amber. Please talk in simple terms as I am a

I have just got an Apple Airport time capsule to back up my one year old iMac......how do I do it? I have tried putting an ethernet cable into the time capsule and to my sky hub, all I get is a flashing amber light, can anyone help I am a silver surfer not used to Apple products, but love them, plus I don't understand half of the jargon....HELP please

Apple's Setup Guide for the Time Capsule is pretty simple and clear for most users, and you don't indicate at what point or step that you are getting stuck.
So, please go to page 8 in your Setup Guide to review the topic of Plugging In Your AirPort Time Capsule.
The Sky hub will likely have 4 Ethernet <--> ports on the back of the device. Pick any one that you want and connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port that you choose.
Then, connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN (circle of dots) port as shown in the Setup Guide.
Continuing with the instructions on page 8 of the Setup Guide, power up the Time Capsule by connecting the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule to a wall AC jack.
Note that the instructions indicate that the indicator light will be solid amber during startup, and it will change to blinking amber during the setup. The light will remain blinking amber until you have configured the Time Capsule at which time the light will turn green.
Next, go to page 12 of the Setup Guide to see the information to Use your Mac or iOS device to set up your AirPort Time Capsule.
You indicated in your tag line that you were using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), and since that will exceed the minimum requirement of a Mac using OS X (10.7.5) as noted in the guide, you can use your Mac to set up the Time Capsule.
Continuing with the instructions on page 12 of the Setup Guide......
    1. Open AirPort Utility on your Mac.  It is located as follows:  Finder (the smiley face on the dock) > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    2. Select your AirPort Time Capsule and click Continue. You won't be able to do this, but read further......If you do not see the AirPort Time Capsule that you want to configure, choose it from the WiFi status menu in the menu bar, at the top of the screen.
So, clicking on the WiFi icon will yield a small window that looks like this:
The example below shows an AirPort Extreme.  You will see Time Capsule on your screen. Click on Time Capsule.
When you click on Time Capsule, that will get the setup wizard going. it will take a minute to analyze the network, then display a screen that looks similar to the illustration below, except that you will see a picture of a Time Capsule on your screen
    3. Continuing with the Setup Guide.......Follow the onscreen prompts to create a new network
Network Name...........Type in a simple name that you want to call your network. Do not use the suggested name.
Base Station Name....Type in a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Mine is TC, for example.
Password...................Type in a password that will be used for both the network and the Time Capsule.  Write that down.
Verify..........................Type in the password again to Verify
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup  Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now set up and it will display a green light.
