In need of Tiger Samba Bible - OD/PDC/BDC question.

To cut to the chase, we have two 10.3.9 servers at two sites, both running as OD Master, PDC for two separate domains. Each has it's own users, some frequent travellers have accounts on both machines. Note that the Samba dmain name is NOT the same at both locations.
Well, the time has come, and my task is to merge the domains into one cohesive whole as part of a general upgrade to Tiger. I am researching the pitfalls of the basic upgrade of a single server, but let's assume I got past all that. Now I want to make the remote server a BDC for the primary, and sanely merge all the users into one directory structure. They will communicate via VPN tunnel, different subnets.
Anyone done this, or know of a Bible of Samba PDC under OSX?
TIA

Hi I have exactly the same problem. I'm pretty sure that somehow is related with the hardware of the computer, as only one of my computers seems to be affected by this problem. I'm I a networkmanager user. I have solved the issue by taking away samba from the daemons array in /etc/rc.conf (in fact I putted a ! in front what is the same). An the following the suggestion up. I have made a script "/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/30_samba":
#!/bin/sh
INTERFACE=$1 # The interface which is brought up or down
STATUS=$2 # The new state of the interface
case "$STATUS" in
'up') # $INTERFACE is up
exec /etc/rc.d/samba start
'down') # $INTERFACE is down
# Check for active interface and down if no one active
if [ ! `nm-tool|grep State|cut -f2 -d' '` = "connected" ]; then
exec /etc/rc.d/samba stop
fi
esac
as indicated in wiki networkmanager and pointed above.  Finally, I set the permission for "30_samba" scrip to 755 and the ownership to root:root. Now it works.
Note: If I leave the samba daemon in the array or background it I get a weird problem as only the nmbd but not smbd in up after reboot.
I hope it helps to others. Still I found very weird this behaviour. It has been going on for a long while with this computer although I was lazy to dig in the reasons until now. I will really appreciate if someone more skilful could have a look to the problem.

  • Samba As Windows PDC problem + AD

    Hello All,
In an effort to minimize the amount of different logins my users have, I am trying to create a windows domain with Samba as a PDC in OSX Server 10.6.6. Before attempting to "create" this domain Samba was running on the server as a "Standalone" server with default settings. When the role of the SMB server is changed to "Primary Domain Controller" a Fatal Error shows up in the logs saying it cannot find its workgroup. Here is a sample:
    # [2011/04/13 19:22:06, 0, pid=148] /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.5/samba/source/nmbd/nmbdserverlistdb.c:write_browselist(350)
writebrowselist: Fatal error - cannot find my workgroup "#####"
I have gone thru and tried to reset all settings for samba, shutting it down and restarting, deactivating the service. I have also scoured the internet to find a solution. Reading thru the manual for Samba PDC in apples documentation make this process seem as if it were as easy as pie. I am stumped.
My ultimate goal is to create this domain and have a Windows 2008 SBS authenticate to it. The SBS will be acting as a terminal services machine.
In everything I have read, the "Normal" or accepted setup is to have OD authenticate to AD, not the other way around. Since our system is entirely Mac(except the accounting server) and our OD is active and running, I would prefer not to change to AD.
Can anyone shed some light on what might be wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    -Netti

Did I post this in the wrong place. Please, any advice is appreciated.

  • Need Help with FCP7 import and plug in question.

    Hello,
I just registered and would like to ask two questions. Everything else I'll use the search function for but I need the answer right away.
Ok First question. I have a mac pro at home and a intel macbook both with FCS4 during the holiday season I'd like to work on a project on my laptop. Now I have all my files on a 2.0 USB drive(I know its not that fast for video) but this is only temp. while traveling. I'm trying to figure out why it wont import the files into another project. Even when I'm at my home Mac Pro when I try to import a projects footage into another project it doesn't read it. This comes up
"File Error: 0 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied 254 unknown"
But all the files will work in the project that it was originally captured too.
If this helps the codec is sonys HDV 1080 60i converted to Apple ProRes 422(HQ) which I found out I should only use the regular Apple ProRes 422. I'm stuck now b/c I cannot import the files into a new project to work in on my laptop. Plus my Macbook doesn't have Firewire800 so I have no way to get the footage from tape to my laptop other then my USB Hard Drive.
I also have problem importing the files in Motion and Cinema Tools they also are not recognizing the files which is getting me upset since they are FCP7 generated files after I convert them to ProRes.
Whenever I try to import/use the files in anything other the original project they are grey'ed out.
I'm also confused on how to import effects plug-ins I've downloaded effects from apple only to have now directions to import them into the program.
Sorry for the Noob questions I'm a film student learning FCP7 by myself so I have the upper hand come next semester. Thanks in advance.

Can't tell for sure but it sounds as if the drive is not properly formatted, or you do not have correct read/write permissions for it. There is no way you can use this drive with HQ video. You're going to get into problem if you even try.

  • Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install tiger discs version 10.4.10. Is it safe to downgrade or not please help

Hi, I want to downgrade from OSX LEOPARD to OSX TIGER but I have a few questions regarding this. My iMac is originally from Sep 2007 it came preloaded with tiger. I have original install (2) tiger discs version 10.4.10.  I want to know if it is safe and what are the necessary steps to do so. Also by downgrading im wondering if a lot of apps nowadays support tiger for example I have photoshop version 5 and 4 these are very important to me. One last question does anyone know of any reliable virus protection for mac that doesnt slow down your computer? because I have read that a lot of them do so. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it! Here are the specs for my iMac
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac7,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    4 MB
      Memory:
    2 GB
      Bus Speed:
    800 MHz

Most of the time a perception of general slow performance is the result of installing third party junk alleged to speed up, "clean" or "optimize" your Mac, or to look for viruses that don't exist. Ideally you would know what you installed so you can uninstall it, but if you don't know or aren't sure there are techniques such as Safe Mode and creating a temporary user account to confirm that suspicion.
If you open Activity Monitor it may show a process, or processes, that occupy a lot of your system's time.
Slowness confined solely to web browser activity is often the result of an inexorable progress toward websites that demand ever more processor-intensive tasks. If your slow performance is strictly limited to web browsing, you might try disabling Flash by either uninstalling it, or use utilities such as ClickToFlash that allow you to control what Flash content gets loaded. Flash in itself is not inherently evil, but there is nothing to stop websites or the advertisers who pay for them from writing horrible Flash code that can do everything from hogging 100% of your CPU's time to causing random crashes. You can watch Activity Monitor as in the above to correlate these troublesome web pages with performance degradation.
You are correct; if your computer shipped with Tiger you may certainly revert to it. I forgot that Tiger was shipping on new Macs as recently as five years ago. To downgrade it would be necessary to completely erase your hard disk and boot with the Tiger installation DVD, followed by installing it anew. Such drastic measures are not necessary and you are unlikely to be satisfied with the results anyway.
Assuming your system is free of third party parasitic junk attached to OS X in an ill-conceived attempt to improve upon it, that your hard disk drive is sound and the boot volume has enough free space to work with, by far the best performance-enhancing improvement would be to add more memory. Buy as much as your computer can use and that you can afford. 2 GB is not that much any more.

I need to know how to change my security questions cause I have forgotten  them and would like to buy an app but cannot cause I need to answer the questions

The page that you’ve posted from has instructions for how to reset them i.e. if you have a rescue email address set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should let you reset them.
If you don't have a rescue email address then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

    esac
as indicated in wiki networkmanager and pointed above.

  • 2 Partitions needed in Tiger: Mac and Windows

I just bought my nephew a verbatim 320G external hard drive for the iBook G3 laptop that I gave him (the internal drive is way too small). He has Mac programs that we bought for him and he needed a bigger hard drive to install them on.
Now he tells me that he'd like to also use part of the Verbatim hard drive to back up his Windows laptop that's using Vista.
How can I partition this Verbatim drive to have a Mac partition AND a Windows Vista Partition both on the same hard drive in Tiger? Can it be done, and how?

Yes it can, In Disk Utility just Partition it then make one Mac OS Extended, the other MS-DOS.

  • Need opinion : Tiger Server running on PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic)?

    Dear Gurus,
I have a spare PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphic) with 2GB RAM, and a spare copy of 10.4 Server. Is it reasonable to install Tiger Server into this PowerMac? The computer will serve as a file server for about 20+ user (mostly documents, no video or gigabyte psd file).
The machine meet Tiger minimum system requirement but I need some real life opinion of whether this is okay, or just a bad idea (system will sluggish, etc, etc.)
    TIA

Server doing File Sharing is an I/O problem, not a compute problem. I have run Server 10.3 on a Beige G3 \[with a SCSI RAID added].
You need fast Hard Drives and a fast (preferably Gigabit Ethernet) connection to the workstations to get "near Hard Drive" performance.

Make sure you purchase the retail version of Tiger which looks like:
And doesn't say update, upgrade, or dropin.

  • Help! Need a Tiger File!

Greetings! I would be most grateful if someone out there in Mac OS X Tiger land would email me a Tiger file! Actually, it's a folder that I need because the Snow Leopard version (which I'm running) is not compatible with aTV! Here's the address to locate the specific folder: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreAudioKit.framework I need that whole CoreAudioKit.framework folder. If anyone would be willing to send me this folder/file, please post here saying you did, so I don't get a bunch of these. Or, if anyone knows where I could retrieve this specific file from Apple or Apple Support, please enlighten me! Again, Thanks & God Bless!

Well, after reading & rereading your post I wasn't sure just EXACTLY what you needed, but here ya be..... My contribution to a fellow Different Thinker. <g>
Use it if you can (but please notify me if you do DL it so I can dump it when you're done - thx):

In that folder you'll find 2 files:
    1. ishot13.jpg (319KB): A screenshot of a Finder window showing the paths leading to the folder I believe you're looking for (for your own verification).
    2. CoreAudioKit.framework.zip (64KB): The zipped-up folder you need. (tiny bugger....)
NOTE about that CoreAudioKit folder: Within that folder are several aliases; however, I checked them all out & they all point to their originals as things that exist within that very same folder. Makes no sense to me, but I'm sure there's some kind of reason for that.....
And BTW, my current sys is a PPC Titanium PB with 2 busted hinges (dammit. did that recently.) running the Tiger 10.4.11 sys maxed out with all that Tiger can handle, plus all the sec updates up to 008, if that means anything to ya.
(Somewhere out there though, a maxrammed white MacBook Pro's got my name on it.....)
    hasta
good luck Evang -- and Happy Holidays!!
