Certainly an interesting discussion thread we have here. We had size limitations on the amount of software to place on the DS so did not preload the NWDI
Go to the SDN DS exercise page and you will be able to download the NWDI client and connect it to the DS. You can also follow this link: SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA - Introductory Exercises [original link is broken]
Three steps:
1. Read the instructions under "Installing NetWeaver Development System on a Client" PDF
2. Within that document, follow instructions to download the JDK, NWDI software, and optionally Adobe Lifecycle Designer
3. Download the workaround software itself under following paragraph on exercise page.

VC Error: There are no BI systems defined in portal/ no authorization

Hi,
when trying to launch the BI integration wizard on an iview in Visual Composer in the ESA Discovery system I get the follwing error message:
"WARNING 2005: There are no BI systems defined in portal. In order to use BI integration wizard, you must first define at least one BI system based on the BI XMLA, BI ODBO, BI JDBC, or BI SAP Query Connector."
When I click on the "Find data" button in VC I am able to see the names of BI systems in the System drop down box and can search queries and execute them. So the BI must be connected.
I did not change the original configuration of portal or VC.
When trying to launch the MDX editor or SQL editor I get the error message that I am not authorized to do this, but I am logged on as user admin or user j2ee_admin.
Can somebody help me please

Multiple Discovery Systems on the same network

Is anybody successfully running more than one DS on the same network? We have edited the hostname of the DS but their still seems to be a conflict between the two servers and the SID names cannot be the same as well.

The changing of the hostname is not recommended by SAP, but there is a customer who succeeded in doing so and claims to have even connected 4 Discovery Systems to the same network.
Knowing Maxim, I believe he indeed achieved it.

Error when using interactive form on SAP Discovery system

we are trying to make a customer interactive form on the SAP Discovery system, everything works fine until we try to run a preview with interactive and changeble parameters turned on. By the way there is a SAP provided credential on the system. (system SAP ECC 6.0 sp08)

SAP Discovery system access to BI and EP

Dear support,
We have setup our Discovery System and were trying to connect it to our DEV 4.7 system for the purpose of prototyping the use of BI and the Enterprise Portal. Were running into issues due to our lack of knowledge and SAPs lack of good documentation in these areas. Were wondering if theres any support help you can provide to establish the connections between these systems and get some of the packaged functionality activated? Please let me know.

AJit, lots of points of learning here.
firstly, have you run through the basic excercises associated with the discovery system, including defining your own scenarios that you wish to test just using the components on the server?
I am sure you have already looked here but this is the jump off page to the discovery server assets.

As for connectivity from the DS to the 4.7 ERP, you should either be configuring your XI instance to manage the interaction, or web service enabling the BAPI you wish to interact with and calling it from the visual composer tooling on the server.
Also, you can raise a support ticket following the usual process if you have a specific issue or cnnectivity requirements on you 4.7 instance.
Finally, are you sure you want to use your backend erp and not the erp2005 deployed on the box?

Enterprise Services list in Discovery System.

I just want to know the Enterprise services list in Discovery system.
Actually why i needed that, is just wanted to know is there any enterprise service available for Billing, Service Order Management that are present as functionality in SAP CCS [Customer Care System ] - Utilities.
And do discovery system consist of Utilites Enterprise Services ?

Please keep in mind that this refers to the services on the DS only. The Enterprise Services Workplace on SDN (https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/explore-es and http://erp.esworkplace.sap.com/socoview(bD1kZSZjPTgwMCZkPW1pbg==)/flddisplay.asp) provides an extended set of services in the meanwhile. You potentially will find your specific services in that list.

There are no restrictions for creating custom clients on the Discovery System box.
It is highly recommended to backup your current server before customizing the box so you can return to the original state if needed.

1. The Discovery System is different from APO as there is no dedicated APO installed on it. So for APO related functionality you will need a dedicated system.
2. Yes - this NW04s, SP08 is the version the Discovery System version 2.0 is based on.
3. The Discovery System comes 'as an appliance'. Currently this is based on Microsoft Windows and MS SQL Server. We currently don't have a version that is running on another OS. Technically the software supports all operating systems that are mentioned in the Product Avalability Matrix (PAM).

Availability of the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA

Hello Everybody,
will the SAP Discovery System for Enterprise SOA only be avaliable as a appliance as I've read on NetWeaver04s on Discovery System? Will there be a normal installation like a IDES System?
Perhaps a good idea for a quick start would be a peinstalled Linux Based VMWare Image :-).

Hi Gregor,
among the reasons for shipping the Discovery System as an appliance are legal reasons. So as long as there are 3rd party components involved (from SAP perspective) you'd need to be an official distributor for them. Obviously this restriction applies to VMWare Images as well.
An IDES-like installation is facing the challenge of integrating multiple components (that normally have to be installed separately) and their configuration data during the set-up already. This can be done as the example of Rapid Installer shows. But it is certainly more work to accomplish it.
As always: Making a complex system easy to use/set-up requires extended efforts behind the scenes. So it is always necessary to find the trade-off between "time to market" and "plug-and-play". So currently the availability as appliance is a compromise of both.

IDES vs. Discovery System

What are the differences between SAP Discovery System and IDES? For example, does Discovery system include all standard SAP transactions (like IDES includes) etc.? Can we create our own scenarios or do we have to use only preconfigured ones?

Hi Hannu,
The SAP Discovery System's ERP (SAP ECC 6.0) is configured using the SAP Best Practices Baseline (in v2.0 we have the baseline for ECC5.0 and in v3.0 we have the baseline for ECC6.0) offering for the US. The master data etc. is provided by SAP Best Practices, not IDES. Therefore IDES data is not in the system but only data needed for our specific scenarios is there.
IDES and SAP Best Practices vary significantly.
First, the SAP Best Practices is delivered with an implementation configuration set, not just as a reference. This means that all of the configuration settings are captured into BC sets that can be activated in a new system, captured in transports and transported from Dev to QA and Production.
Additionally, the Best Practices have accompanying configuration guides so that if someone were to use the system as a reference and wanted to know what configuration was activated in the system, they would be able to find out.
SAP Best Practices is fully reusable content either for sandbox, prototype, development, or production. Each SAP Best Practice may have either an industry or cross-industry focus which will help the customer for blueprinting. In the case of the Discovery System, we used our most generic ERP offering, "Baseline".
IDES on the other hand is a fully configured reference system which may have process documentation, but the configuration is not delivered in a way that can be transported outside of a sandbox environment.

Discovery System v3 - Installation questions

We have the Discovery Server v3, with ERP and SOL instances. Some small questions regarding installation.
We have a DB size of ~175Gb. Is it normal?
We have a RAM consumption of 11Gb when both systems are started. Is it normal?
In the Visual Admin, Server > Services > Destinations doesn't work (class loading exception). Do you experience the same?

How can we use two Discovery Systems in same network

Hi Experts,
I have two discovery systems with me and both of them have same SID and host name. As per the Discovery Systems configuration document we should not change any settings.
Now I have a requirement like use one discovery system for R3 & BW and the other one for XI, EP and AII.
Could any one tell the best approach to get it done?

Hi Siva,
the blog you found was created based on version 2 of the SAP Discovery system.
For version 3 there is the option to adjust the host name according to your needs during the system set-up. You can read the details in the [Quick Guide|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/801dd54d-dd37-2a10-eca7-94bce2de28bc].

Setting up the Discovery system on a company wide LAN

All,
As I mentioned in a previous thread, I am working for a fairly large company that has a lot of policies and restrictions regarding bringing any kind of equipment on the network - especially servers.
Since I am not a network expert by any means, I am wondering whether there are ways to set it up so that only a few users can access it and - main reason - to have it isolated from the rest of the LAN (security reasons etc.).
Did someone else run into the same issue and had to go a similar route?
It looks like I got over the budget hurdle, now I have to prepare for the next battle ;->.

I plan to set up DSL at work, having an own line just for the system. The main problem is that the system must not be connected to our company network because it is so different from our standard environment (security, patches, Software, hardware).
To the options:
SAP hosting has offered us some kind of discovery system but at a very higher price.
I additionally asked HP if they will be willing to host the ESA system, but they did not offer this.
Virtualization
I asked SAP to provide a VMWare Player image of the ESA system, which can be run under a virtual machine. This would help a lot, but I was not successful. Theoretically it is possible to built such a machine by using VMware recorder, but I do not have any experience with it and I do not know if this is legal from a SAP or HP perspective.

- what level of partnership is needed (none [for instance for products available in the SDN Download section] to get those sustems, SAP Partner for IDES, SAP Global Partner for Software Catalog)
- what is the trial period (if any) : is it possible to renew the license, if yes for how long...

All SDN downloads only need SDN membership, which is available to anybody signing up.

IDES is only available to customers and partners and this depends on the country you live in. There is no IDES download on SDN.

All trial periods are 90 days for legal reason. I know we did different in the past, but had to change this.

Because of the legal reason trial licenses are not intended to be renewed. Nevertheless, as we usually provide new downloads every 6 month or so question is when such rights end, as new downloads renew the evaluation period. Well, the intention is to inform you guys about our software and that is what you essentially do with it (for the most part).

Discovery system not available from HP??

We tried to purchase the discovery system from HP, however, got a response that the server model DL380G4 is sold out and to get it to work with DL380G5 will take 2 to 3 months.
Any update on this from others?

Hi Everyone,
The SAP software has been evaluated on the new hardware and HP is in the process re-certifying the image (they have a pretty extensive QA process through their factory integration team). We are trying to expedite that process now. There should be an update to their website shortly and an interim ordering process will be put in place. Stay tuned for updates!
