Java Duplex Scanning?

I am working on the design of a prototype (proof of concept) of a software product. One of the requirements will be "high end" document scanning. I would like to use Java, but am not finding any scanning toolkits or libraries which look to be commercial quality. I have been to the TWAIN gnome web site, and I have to say that is the best I have found so far. My biggest problem with that is Duplex scanning is not supported. I would also like to not lock ourselves into a Win32 client platform, but that is acceptable if there are no other options. We use Fujitsu "high speed" greyscale Scanners, which I believe are Bell and Howell devices based on my previous experience with Bell & Howell scanners.
Are there any commercial scanning toolkits available for Java, which support duplex? I would rather use Java technology than Microsoft (COM, .net, whatever), but am unable to find Java support for scanning.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Pete

What I would like to do is perform duplex scanning with this product. I am currently looking for freeware software which will give me the ability of merge two documents together. I have found some very buggy software which works in linux. Is there a method that will allow me to scan 2-sided documents into a single scan using this product? If not, do you know of a freeware software or HP supported software which will convert two seperate documents into a single document.
    -Ryan

    Hey Ryan,
Looking at the product specs for this printer I was able to see that it does not support automatic duplex scanning.  However, if you open the HP Scan or HP Laserjet Scan software on your PC, then there may be a checkbox at the very bottom right to allow for duplex scanning.  The settings will have to be set to the Automatic Document Feeder or ADF for this option to appear.
If this feature is not present, then the next best option will be to use a PDF Merging software as you were mentioning.  Take a look at PDF Split and Merge (PDF Sam for short).  I will provide a link below to this software download for convenience.

    Hope this helps,

  • Duplex Scanning from Canon MX7600 Not Recognized in Acrobat 9 Pro

I am trying to duplex scan in PDF docs with a new Canon MX7600 scanner. The utility that comes with the printer has a complete duplex scan utility which includes PDF docs, but limits the names to around 28 characters which is not enough for our naming conventions. Also, I cannot scan directly to Secure PDF's. Nor can I set it to automatically ask for Meta Tags.
The Acrobat Create PDF Scan only recognizes or offers the standard set which does not include duplex scanning. Canon tells me that the naming length limitation is built into the software design. They suggested that I contact Adobe and so I am.
How do I get Acrobat 9 Pro to duplex scan directly into Acrobat?
Thanks and all the best, Craig.

They sometimes monitor, particularly in the last month or so. However, most of the answers here come from users. In many cases you might find the answers from users to be more useful than from tech support, unless it is an off the wall problem no one has run into or tried. Typically when you scan from Acrobat, there is a settings selection on the window where you select to scan. That may be where you can find what you want. As far as I know, the information in the settings is only what is made available to Acrobat through the product twain driver.
The other suggestion to try to scan into another product, such as a graphics package, might help you get a better feel of what is possible. You might also check the manual if you have not done that already.

  • Duplexing scan jobs 1 side is heavily offset

The offset on one side of the duplex scan printout is too close to the top and you loose a good section off the top of the document. I've performed the Tray2 alignment in Setup Menu, Print Quality, Adjust Alignment using a micrometer and I've got the alignments front and back as perfect as you can get them. If I print a reference page duplex, these do come out as perfect as I could expect. This tells me the image formation and print engine side is good .There will be a little skew from the path expected. But If I take the near perfect alignment test printout and scan it in duplex, one side is horribly offset near the top. I've ran the eDuplex alignment in the secondary menu if you know how to get there but there's no change.
Anyone out there know of any other adjustments/calibrations that can be done to this scanner assy. I do service  for another major printer supplier and in their scanner service menus I can adjust all offsets manually as needed to ensure a good, equal image is obtained on both sides.
    TIA

Sounds like there is a paper size setting somewhere incorrectly set. Is this a double side scan job (followed by printing, which should be easy to tell in the scanned result)? or a 2-sided copy? Check the paper size in scan or copy settings.

  • Duplex scanning Acrobat 9 Pro

We have Windows XP Professional SP3 and we recently purchased an Epson GT-2500 scanner. When using the EpsonScan utility, duplex scanning works perfectly. But when using Acrobat 9 Professional it will only scan single sided.
    I have:
    - updated the Acrobat 9 to the latest version (9.5.2)
    - updated the Epson scanner drivers
    - reinstalled the Acrobat
Before getting the Epson scanner we had an HP and the duplex scanning worked perfectly with it.
I tried to contact Epson tech support, but they only support their products therefore they will not give any support help with the Acrobat.
    Thanks...

    - setting the Custom Scan to "Show Scanner's Native Interface" works perfectly.
    - using the Configure Presets, the User Interface options are grayed out which means I can not change it to "Show Scanner's Native Interface". It is set to "Hide Scanner's Native Interface" and can not be changed, which means duplex printing does not work. If there is a way to change the User Interface setting so that the options can be changed, that would be perfect.
    Thanks,
    Gray

Acrobat also has settings to specify whether you need Single sided or duplex scanning. So, please try out the setting once.
For Custom Scan, you can specify the setting in the dialog itself and in case you are using Presets, you can configure presets to use your preferences by going to File > Create > PDF From Scanner > Configure Presets http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-4692975-231292/450-599/Untitle d.png  ( http://forums.adobe.com/servlet/JiveServlet/showImage/2-4692975-231292/Untitled.png )

  • HP 7520 Double sided (duplex) scanning possible? If so, how do I make it work?

How can I scan a doublesided document (A4) with the HP Photosmart 7520?
I Prefer to scan directly to mail but I never see the option to scan the other side of a document. Not only with scan to mail, but also with the other options (scan to computer, USB)
On several reviews I've read the following:
"The Photosmart can print and scan in duplex (both sides of the page), but duplex scanning requires two passes"
But how does that work? I Guess it doesn't mean that I have to make two separate scans (that wouldn't be duplex offcourse).
But at no point i'm given the option to turn the document and resume scanning.
Any ideas on how to use duplex (sort of) scanning with the HP 7520?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

The Photosmart 7520 does offer the ability to duplex scan.
Are you scanning from the Front Panel of the printer or from the software on the computer? Duplex scanning has to be initiated from the software.
To duplex scan from the software on the PC:
    * Open the HP Printer Assistant software for the Photosmart 7520
    * Select Scan a Document or Photo
    * Select Document to PDF (or Email as PDF)
    * On the right side of the screen is a list of drop down menus and one of them is the source of the scan
    * Select to scan from the Automatic Document Feeder
    * After selecting this option, a check box will appear below this option to turn on Dulpex scanning
    * Set the other options as desired and start the scan
If you are scanning multiple pages that need to be duplex scanned, then the printer will scan the full list of one side and then instruct you on how to reset the pages for scanning the remaining sides. The unit does require a 'flip and resume' style method of duplex scanning. Hope this helps.

  • Duplex scanning on x476dw

Has anyone used the x476 for duplex scanning from the ADF?  I have an 8500, which is great for printing and copying, but the duplex scanning is very frustrating.  It either doesn't feed or quits in the middle of a large scan so you have to start all over.  It is a huge time waster for me.

  • Hp printer 8610 and 8620- automatic duplex scan

Hi. I would like to ask if hp officejet 8610 and 8620 can perform automatic duplex scan?
I know that 8600 can do it but not sure about this.

I will then be able to send you a screenshot to help you navigate to the correct setting.

  • Scansoftware for duplex scanning

I hope I'm in the right forum here!
My brand new Lexmark X544 laserprinter can scan, copy and print in duplex automatically. Very handy!
There is however no software provided. Scanback exists - but only for windows.
I can use image capture or preview to scan; it only can't scan duplex.
Does anyone know of software that I could use to scan duplex automatically?
I read of "pdf-scanner" - i'm not sure it can do that.
I have an iMac G5 with Snow Leopard (10.6.8)
Thank you very much in advance.

    Dear kurt188,
Thank you for your quick reply!
This is however not what I am looking for.
I can automatically scan up to 30 sheets in a row via the sheetfeeder, no problem, and they will all save into one pdf if I tell him to.
It will only scan one side of the documents, whereas my machine has the ability to scan both sides automatically (duplex). I am only looking for software that can tell the machine to scan both sides.

Hello there! Welcome to the forums @Schulte
You should be able to still scan a multiple page document as one file, on Yosemite as well. You will need to have the Full Feature software installed however. Below is some help!
Here is the download to install the full software: HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer Full Feature Software and Drivers
Here are the instructions on how to scan a multi-page page document into a single file:

  • Acrobat + Duplex / Double Sided Scanning

    Hi,
I have a user who is currently experiencing a problem duplex scanning.
She has a duplex scanner, and when she tries to create a pdf using scanner, sets the option to '2 sides', then hits scan, it scans the first page, then prompts for her to manually turn the page over.
Doesnt seem to be a driver issue as duplex scanning is working perfectly using the Windows scanning utility.
She says that this definately worked in the past, but suddenly stopped. She isnt sure, but thinks its possible that it stopped working roughly the time that the trial period of acrobat finished, and I put in the license key.
She is using a version of Acrobat that came with her Scanner, I believe this is version 7 standard, but its possible that it might be version 8. Her laptop is locked away at the moment, so I can't check exactly what version it was.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ventzi

    Hi Daniel,
Only automatic double sided pritning is supported by the HP Orricejet Pro 8610.
Automatic double sided scanning is only supported by the HP Officejet 8620 or 8630 for that series.
You may perform manual double sided scanning by scanning from your PC.
From the HP Scan software click on Advanced Settings and check the box next to two-sided scanning.
Confirm and follow the steps on screen.
As a reference you may find its specifications below, the difference between the 8610 vs. the 8620 models are ADF Duplexing (two sided copying, scanning or faxing of an original) and the screen size:

  • 5740: 2-sided scanning (duplex) using ADF

Hello, I am trying to determine if this printer can use the ADF to manually build a pdf from 2-sided documents.  I am aware that it does not have an automatic 2-sided ADF, but the scenario I am think of is as follows: - Give it a stack of documents in the ADF, and scan 1 side of them- Manually flip the stack- Recan the second side- The software combines these all into the proper order I know it can do a single sheet at a time, but I am looking to do this in stacks using the ADF.  I see conflicting information everywhere, and would rather not buy the printer only to return it.  Can someone confirm if this scenario works? Thanks!

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I noticed that you are wondering if your HP Officejet 5740 printer, can use the ADF to manually build a pdf from 2-sided documents, on Windows 8.1. I am happy to answer this for you!  According to this how to scan guide, Scan Using Full Feature HP Software (Windows 8), under the section titled, Step 3: Scan with HP software, and then the section titled, Scan a multi-page original into a single file. One section states:  Important: The Scan Preview feature must be enabled in order to scan multi-page documents into a single file. Additional pages from the original are added to the single file in the Scan Preview window. When the scan preview displays, perform one of the following actions:Click the plus sign on the left side of the window to scan additional pages. If you are not using an ADF, load the next page of the document onto the scanner glass to add each additional page to the file. The only thing I would be concerned about is the page order. Because the printer will scan each page in the order they are inserted into the ADF feeder. So if you stack say 10 pieces of paper in the feeder, it will scan the one side of each page, and then if you flip them over, it will scan the second side of each page in the order you have it in the feeder and add it to the file in that order.  The only way to scan double sided in the proper order, as far as I can tell, is to scan the top of page one. flip it over manually, scan the back of page one, and repeat for the remaining pages. You might be able to find a third-party PDF editor, that could you could use to edit the file with. As this printer only has duplex printing, and not scanning capabilities. I would honestly look for a printer that has the duplex scanning capability that you are looking for.  Hope this information helps!  “Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.”
