Kernel panics with both sticks of RAM but with either

Hey everyone. Thanks for taking a look at my panic logs. A couple notes are below, followed by the text from four panics. Any suggestions or tips would be helpful! I've already gone through and followed Dr. Smoke's instructions on trying to isolate kernel panics (no haxies, safe mode startup, no login items, &c.) I'm running 10.4.7 on a 1.5GHz PBook with two 1GB sticks of RAM.
1) don't know what the first one (Thursday's noon panic) is.
2) looks to me like the next three (Thursday's 7pm, Friday 5:30, and Friday 5:50) are all RAM problems?
3) I downloaded Rember to check out the RAM, even though my PBook's hardware test was clean, as was techtool's tests. Running Rember is what "caused" both of the Friday crashes.
4) I took one 1GB stick out of the computer and running Rember resulted in a clean run - I also switched which slot it was in, to see if there could be a problem there. BUT, I also ran the test with the OTHER stick of 1GB RAM and that one came out clean too!
5) I put both sticks in again and got a "failure" when Rember was "comparing the MUL."
6) I suppose what might be going on is that the system is using up a certain set of blocks on the RAM that Rember then doesn't have access to when there's only one stick in. If I could be sure that was the problem, I'd buy another stick of RAM and run Rember with one or the other to see if I could isolate which stick might be bad.
7) Until then, I suppose I'll run my computer with "just" one stick of RAM to see if it crashes at some point.
8) Do you think it could be a different hardware problem that doesn't allow ANY two sticks of RAM to be used at the same time?

1.5 GHz 15 PowerBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Memtest, which is what Rember is just putting a GUI around, doesn't cause panics. Also, the best test is Memtest done from the command line in Single User Mode. Consensus seems to be that AHT and TechTool Pro 4.1.x (don't know if they managed to improve 4.5.1, but if they did, it would be to just include Memtest in their own routines probably) are both weak on memory testing.
According to users and MacIntouch reader feedback, iTunes is actually one of the best applications and where problems may show up.
memory can differ enough in timing, voltage, construction so that even memory from same vendor/maker will "not get along" which is why it is always best to buy together sometimes. Even Crucial had trouble summer '04 when Apple made small changes in the G5 and DDR400.
If AHT doesn't find any problem with the logicboard, cpu, or RAM slots then I would just try to replace the RAM for say 2 x 1GB? from a known brand.

  • K9NGM not working with two sticks of RAM

    Hi
I've not posted on here before.
I have recently built my own system - for details see below.
It has been working fine with dual boot into XP and Vista (Vista only installed after updating the BIOS to BOSSKILLER's version 3.23)
I have bought an extra stick of RAM and made sure it is exactly the same as my current stick.
I cannot get my system to work with both RAM sticks installed.
When booting into XP with the 2nd stick installed, the PC randomly freezes. Sometimes with a beep coming from the internal speaker.
The mouse and screen and keyboard just stop. This can happen at any time - but always within a few minutes of starting up.
If I try with Vista then it won't even boot. I can go into safe mode, but the last thing it does is load crcdisk.sys. Nothing at all happens after that.
I can use both OS's fine with just one stick of RAM installed. I have tried with both sticks independantly and both seem to be OK. I have also used memtest.org and all the tests complete with no errors.
I have checked the motherboard manual and can confirm that the two sticks are correctly installed in dual channel mode.
I have read elsewhere that adjusting the voltage settings of the memory in the BIOS could help, but there is no option for doing this in this BIOS version.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    JP

Just an update to say that I have it all working now.
I did loads of memory tests etc.
Both memory sticks showed up no problems with the tests.
I eventually managed to find an update to the BIOS to version 3.3 and it's all working wonderfully now.
Boots into Vista and XP with both sticks installed - running Dual Channel no probs.
    Cheers

  • P67S-C43: Won't POST with two sticks of RAM

Hi, my new P67S-C43 has a peculiar problem: It won't POST with two sticks of RAM. I've tried both of my sticks (2 x 2GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 CL9 1.5V) individually in Slot 1 and the system POSTs fine. When I insert the second stick in any other slot, the system proceeds to restart unsuccessully a couple of times and then it will not POST. Only one blue LED is illuminated. When the system is in this state I have to reset the CMOS in order to POST successfully with a single stick of RAM again, which made the problem difficult to diagnose and very annoying to troubleshoot (lose BIOS settings after every attempt with the clear).
Any idea of when we'll see a new BIOS? Are any betas available? I'd like to see if this is a BIOS problem before RMAing it.
    Thanks.

Which BIOS do you now have? Current official is V1.5. It would possibly help to have a full listing of all the systems components. Work with the one RAM stick initially in the primary dimm slot, blue closest to CPU. Get the OS loaded, drivers, etc., then add the second stick in the other blue dimm slot later. I have a feeling the RAM is setting itself up wrong. Might try the manual settings of 1333 9 9 9 24 @ 1.50V's.
The BIOS was 1.5 out of the box but it's my understanding from another thread that there have been a slew of beta BIOSs released. I'm not going to load the OS until I get this straightened out. Also, both sticks would have the same settings with one stick or two installed. I fiddled with voltage, timings, etc but it still wouldn't work when I popped in the second stick. LIke I said, after every attempt with two sticks I have to clear CMOS or it won't work again with one stick. I'm hoping to try a newer BIOS before spending more hours on this, one setting at a time.
Also, I have a 2600K but the rest of the components are irrelevant. At one point I had everything but the CPU/fan, video card, and RAM unplugged and the mobo entirely out of the case. Still didn't work until there was only one stick.

  • Z97m 4790k infinite loop at bios code 03 with 2 sticks of RAM

    Hello,
    Just built a computer with
    i7-4790k, Silverstone te01 cooler
MSI Z97m Gaming MOBO    Bios 1.3 (current)
    780 gtx
Silverstone Strider ST75F-P   v1.1    on the haswell list..
Now the issue.  The computer will not boot with two stick of RAM.
First ones were Crucial Ballistix Tactical 2x8gb that are not on the list.  Works perfectly with one stick.  as soon as you stick another one in the computer it won't boot past post Code 03.  Then it reboots and goes on forever like that.
Second one are corsair CML16GX3M2A1600C11, 2x8gb which are on the list.  Same issue as above.  one stick works great. can oc to 4.7 and rock solid.  as soon as you stick another stick in loop de loops at post code 03.  I tried every slot, no dice.  two stick=no boot.
I also tried taking the video card and all accessories out. still nothing.  2 stick=nada.  But super stable with one stick...
    so help? ideas?
Is it the MOBO? or should I go try another power supply? At this point I do not believe it could be the RAM.

    Hi,
This sounds like motherboard's CPU socket has some bent pins, so check this please. Few times just to make sure it's not a bent pin. If no bent pins, then ok, refit CPU but without cooler yet. Look around RAM slots, maybe while you've been fitting the cooler (if not intel's stock) you have hit board with screwdriver. So look for any sort of scratches/hits around RAM slots and CPU socket. Also try clearing CMOS >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
At last I'd try different power supply WITHOUT the GPU.

  • 890FXA-GD70 problems with 4 stick of ram

I just built a new rig around the 890FXA-GD70 MB and everything is going great except I have major stability problems with 4 sticks of Ram installed.  I purchased 4 sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 from Newegg.  The PC will boot fine with all 4 sticks installed and Windows 7 recognizes them but I have a lot of application crashes.  No BSOD so far but very frequent app problems.  Even the windows event viewer keeps crashing while trying to troubleshoot.  I removed two of the sticks and everything has been rock solid.  Anyone else successfully running 4 sticks in this board or have any suggestions to stabilize? I'm not trying to overclock anything at the moment.
    thanks,

I had similar issues with BSOD.  I thought it might be my RAM.  I tried all kinds of different settings.  Tested it in another system.  It worked flawlessly and passed all memtests.  I took that RAM and the RAM from the other system (a DELL from work) home.  Tried the Dell RAM out and no post.  Tried one stick in DIMM2 and it worked stably and then tried two sticks and it worked stably.  I then tried my memory (ADATA).  I got one BSOD, but ran several memtests and burnin tests over the next 5 or 6 hours.  No more issues.  SWEET.  Reinstalled windows.  Ran great for 4 or 5 days and then got more BSOD.  I contacted MSI support and on two separate occasions they suggested I RMA the board.  I returned the board and got a different one.  I've been happy since (no issues whatsoever).  I even bought two more sticks of RAM.  I'm just saying - maybe it's not your RAM.  I can't say for certain that the 890FXA-GD70 was defective.  It may just need more BIOS updates.  Frustrating to say the least.  I feel your pain.

Have no problems with my MB accessing it, but with MB-AIR it says -  'the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. pls contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'. MB-Air uses maverick downloaded yesterday - upgrade from mountain lion. MB uses snow leopard still, as i am quite used to it and am thinking of upgrade if mavericks work fine on air. Also have parallel on snow leopard but it is no longer supported according to mac website - if i upgrade am i going to lose my parallel and will have to buy a new one!!!

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. • Kernel Panic after installing 16 GB RAM in 2010 13" MacBook Pro

    Hi
I have been having some problems with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro.
After installing 16 GB RAM, made by Corsair, I have had four Kernel Panics so far.
The thing is that the RAM are 1333 MHz, and my computer only takes 1066 MHz RAM. But I downclocked both the sticks to 1066 MHz, so it should work right? They also passed Memtest86, so I don't know what is wrong.
I also did a clean install of Mountain Lion, on a brand new hard drive, but I had another Kernel Panic.
    Here is the latest log:

Getting a kernel panic once in a while is not my definition of "My Mac works just fine..."
You installed the incorrect ram. Get the ram specified for your computer. In theory ram should downclock to the computer's bus speed but in practice this does not always work, as you found out.

  • Kernel panics/crashes persistent, replaced HDD, RAM, Logic board

I have a 2010 white unibody macbook that for the first couple years of it's life gave me no issues whatsoever. Recently, I upgraded from snow leopard to mountain lion and replaced my stock apple 2G RAM for two 4G sticks I bought brand new. Everything ran great for a month or two, the memory was recognized right away, and worked fine (activity monitor displayed everything no issue whatsoever) even running a bootcamp partition, and doing lots of more memory heavy stuff like video editing.
Then I started getting weird issues, like safari or chrome randomly chrashing over and over again, or other apps refusing to even open. Then I started getting windows style glitches where the screen would lag in updating and bits of different app windows would migrate across the screen. Then I got several kernel panics in a row, at which point I figured it was time for action.
I booted from a USB OSX 10.8 install disk I made a while back and ran disk utility to try and repair the disk. Disk utility told me it was fine. I backed up and erased the disk, and tried to re-install.. but the primary process would fail some 4 minutes into the progress bar with no error report.
I gave up and went to the genius bar, where they ran some tests (which turned up nothing on the HDD) and had the same install failure. They figured there was something wrong with the HDD writing system or something, and replaced it with a brand new 500G. The install still failed. They sent it to the offsite repair facility, where they took out my aftermarket RAM and put a pair of brand new 1Gs in. They also replaced my logic board. The install worked, and I got a fresh copy of mountain lion. Everything worked fine as I booted up and started restoring things from my backup drive, other than the tiny 2G memory was pretty much full with the computer just sitting there with say, safari and mail open. So, I cracked it open and put my old-new 8G's of ram in. Worked fine all day yesterday and today. Then about an hour ago i got the same weird crashes and glitches, and then finally it just froze and I had to do a cold power-button shut down. I put the apple approved brand-spankin new RAM back in, but it won't even start up normally. I get the grey apple screen and a progress bar, and then it powers off. I started in recovery mode, which seems to work fine. I ran disk utility and tried to repair the disk, the process failed like a minute in and the error said that it couldn't be repaired and suggested I wipe the disk.
I'm really not sure what else could be wrong if theres a brand new motherboard, OS, HDD and RAM. HELP.

  • Kernel panics - apologies for yet another post but have tried many things

recently started getting regular kernel panics
    so far I have:
    - cleaned out inside for dust
    - connected only keybd and mouse
    - disk utility to repair permissions (and applejack)
    - reset PRAM, NVRAM, SMU
    - changed PRAM battery
    - tried new RAM
reboots ok but within a couple of minutes I get the grey screens coming down and requirement to switch off power for a restart
Fans switch in within a minute or so for jet takeoff
    temparatures of cpus currently = 46 / 44 / 46 / 46C (using XRG)

struggling to get it to boot up now
even on the boot up process, its often moving to the 'take-off' fan noise before the login screen
if it does boot up then it doesnt last long before the grey screen/restart screen appears
I assume I can use the latest install disk for OSX? (10.5)
ethernet cable not connected, although I had been using ethernet for internet connection recently before relocating the machine
after having changed the PRAM battery, the date is no longer being retained (possibly wrong way around??)
    slowly getting frustrated...

  • Constant kernel panics...is it RAM or external harddrives?

I have a Mac Pro that suddenly started kernel panicking all the time. I just bought two new external hard drives (those lacie lego ones) but most of the information I found online points to faulty RAM. I did install two 2MB Dimms this summer which I just removed...but I'm wondering if the hard drives could possibly be the culprit? Why would the RAM suddenly start causing trouble out of nowhere when it's been fine all summer/fall?
I know nothing about reading Kernel panic info. When I tested the hardware I got errors that said 4mem/6/4000006:0x7a469410 and then 4mem/6/4000006:0x7a927890 which makes me think that the culprit is indeed the memory.
Here is my current info after the dimms were removed:

Run AHT for one thing, like you did, and then heed its results (though only Apple has a list of the codes).
Read through excellent FAQs on kernel panics.
Sure it can be RAM, or USB and FW cables and devices like those LaCie units.
RAM fails, can be bad, marginal, have soft errors, same as hard drive sectors can also.

Get the RAM replaced. It could also have resulted in writing garbage or a freeze could leave the file system and drive directory corrupt.

  • Downgraded 2 Macs from Leopard to Tiger. Kernel panics on both now.

I'm prepping a couple of G4's to sell on Craigslist. I downgraded a 1.67 GHz PowerBook G4 from Leopard to Tiger using the original disks that shipped with the laptop. The other Mac was a dual 1.46 GHz (FW800) PowerMac G4 tower - again, from Leopard to Tiger, but using a retail copy of Tiger. Both machines were running perfectly prior to the downgrades, albeit a little slow - which is why I chose to downgrade them both to Tiger. The installations went smoothly, but now they BOTH have kernel panics within a few minutes of logging on.
I've reformatted both discs using the secure 7-pass option, have swapped out the memory, and have run Disk Utility, Disk Warrior 4, and Tech Tool Pro 5 without so much as a hiccup in an attempt to find a problem with the hardware - although actually finding hardware errors on both machines would have been extremely coincidental, if not downright creepy.
I haven't run the Apple Hardware Test in loop mode yet, but I must admit that I don't believe the problem is with the hardware - particularly since both machines were is use right up until the downgrade. I'll be taking a look at the panic logs on both machines next, but thought I'd post this just in case anybody else has had the problem (and hopefully found a solution).
    Anybody...anybody?

    HotHead:

Doesn't seem to be likely. On the other hand, you have reformatted and secure erased the drives, and have run powerful diagnostic tools on the directories with nothing showing up, so a software based issue seems just as unlikely.
I'll be taking a look at the panic logs on both machines next
    That will be helpful.

  • Kernel Panic on Snow Leopard 10.6.5 with kernel 64 bit

Can anyone suggest me any idea about this kernel panic?
I do not guess that the problem is on the RAM. At 32 bit the MBP works perfectly!

  • Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still  Persis

SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
    Your help is immensely appreciated!

    Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.
