MDT 2012 State Restore Phase hangs at Restart-Computer Task

Background:
MDT2012 only for OSD.  Configuring Win7 Enterprise x86 for Reference Image creation with Apps installed.
Configuration is being done with a VMWare VM.
Problem:
I have an issue where the sequence hangs on a later Restart Computer task. Applications finish installing successfully according to the logs. I have no idea why it stops.
I have a couple restart computer tasks earlier in the sequence that all run fine. only after some applications are installed does the Restart Computer hang up.
If I force a restart at that point I get the "dirty environment found" error.  If I select to not start a new install my previous sequence picks up and continues where it should.
When hung up the computer is responsive as I am able to check the logs.  The SMSTS log says the reboot was successful, but it didnt actually happen.
Here is the last bit of the SMSTS.LOG file.

Thanks!

I have tried the following:
One App at a time - Success
No apps at all - Success
2-3 Apps - Mixed.  No pattern.  No single problem application identified.
For some reason I cant post screen caps here or links.
Apps include:
Symantec Endpoint Protection
Oracle Java and ODBC Drivers
Adobe reader, flash, shockwave
MS Office, Forefront, AppV Client
Winzip
Citrix Client
I have tried reordering the list of apps.  I am continuing to enable and disable app installs.  I was hoping people would have come across this and had a fix for this.
Thanks

    MDT 2010 Update 1
Our MDT guru quit about a month ago.   I've done basic stuff here and there
But have never updated an image..
    1.  I deployed our current image to a Vmware workstation.  Added about 200 updates. Nothing else done.
I than rebooted and logged in as local admin and ran litetouch.wsf in a command prompt.
And ran the "Sysprep and Capture image" task sequence.
This sysprep'd and imaged with no errors to the captures folder.
    2.  I than moved that updated image to the "Operating Systems" folder on the deployment share.  Renamed the old .wim file and renamed the new one to be the same as the old one..    (Not completely sure this is the correct
way to do this)  But couldn't find any info on how this is done)
I than proceeded to reimage a machine with the updated .wim.
It gets all the way to the State Restore phase and just stops.   After the final reboot.  I logon with the local admin account as usual and it does not continue.   the Minint and _SMSTaskSequence folder are still there..  If
I let it set for hours nothing happens...
I compared the BDD.log file for both images.    They seem to be identical up until the State Restore phase is supposed to start.
I see NO errors in the BDD log file...
So I am lost as in what to do to try and remedy this issue..
    Info From Sharepoint

Its the new WIM that is not continuing...
I did try the import.   and it did the same thing.
here is the ending of the BDD.log file

I suspect the IE require reboot and TS cannot catch this. So the TS cannot resume its state.

  • Mdt 2012 sp1 command line does not run from task sequence

    Hi,
I am hoping I can explain this correctly.  I am using MDT 2012 and having an issue with running command lines, powershell and batch files that I setup.
The task sequence is set to use an account called "MDTService".  it has rights to join the domain but is not in the local admin group of the reference image.  a domain GPO renames the local admin account CoAdmin.
when running a command line to, for example, run xcopy a folder and subdirectories to the "program Files x86" directory, it does not copy.
When I log on to the system and use an admin account to manually run the command I do not have an issue.  if I log onto the system with the MDTService user and run it, it fails.
How do I get the commands to run from the MDT task sequence?  I do not want to make the MDTService user an admin.  I have tried the run as option in the task sequence but that did not work.  maybe is set it wrong.  I used a domain\Admin
    account which did not work.
what can I clarify or logs can I post to provide more details.
    Thanks in advance.

Any account that needs to add files under %ProgramFilesx86% must be granted administrative privileges.

  • MDT 2012 UNC Deployment Failure with static IP.

I am having trouble getting my UNC deployment to run the State Restore phase. I am operating on a network without DHCP and have successfully connected to the network share and ran the Task Sequence. After the reboot, however, the static ip doesn't get set
    and the deployment can't continue.
Upon inspection of the BDD.log I ran across the entry in the State Restore section that pertains to setting the static ip.
WMI Function: Adapter.EnableStatic(IPAddress,SubnetMask) FAILURE: -2147217405 Unknown Error: -2147217405
If I log in and run the LiteTouch.wsf file as an administrator, the task sequence starts running again and the static ip gets applied.
Why is this not happening automatically?

The account I'm using does have permissions. I use the same account to join manually after the process is complete. I'm not sure what the purpose of the Temp Account is. I only see it if the process fails. Otherwise, if the process completes, it is not there
when I log in. The Administrator account is disabled by Group Policy but since it never joins the Domain, the Administrator account doesn't get disabled.
    There is no ZTIDomainJoin.log
    NetSetup.log is as follows:
    NetpDomainJoin
    NetpMachineValidToJoin
        OS Version: 6.1
        Build Number: 7601 (7601.win7sp1_ldr.130828-1532)
        ServicePack: Service Pack 1
        SKU: Windows 7 Enterprise
    NetpGetLsaPrimaryDomain: status: 0x0
    NetpMachineValidToJoin: status: 0x0
NetpJoinWorkgroup: joining computer 'MININT-TBQSA02' to workgroup 'WORKGROUP'
NetpValidateName: checking to see if 'WORKGROUP' is valid as type 2 name
NetpCheckNetBiosNameNotInUse for 'WORKGROUP' [ Workgroup as MACHINE ] returned 0x0
NetpValidateName: name 'WORKGROUP' is valid for type 2
    NetpSetLsaPrimaryDomain: for 'WORKGROUP' status: 0x0
    NetpJoinWorkgroup: status: 0x0
    NetpDoDomainJoin: status: 0x0
Now I realize that it appears to be joining the "Workgroup" Workgroup, but in my customsettings.ini I have the JoinDomain variable set to the proper domain.

  • MDT 2012 and DomainJoin

I am trying to understand when MDT 2012 joins the domain during a standard client task sequence if the settings are specified in CustomSettings.ini. In 2012 Beta 1, I had machines joining the domain during the "Recover from Domain" step. After upgrading
to 2012 RTM, machines are joining the domain well before that step (even before first logon).
Is this expected behavior and is there an easy way to change it?

By default, the domain join happens as part of the OS installation - the unattend.xml specifies to join the domain.  If you want that to happen later, e.g. using the "Recover from Domain" step, you would need to remove the join entries from the unattend.xml
associated with your task sequence.  The Lite Touch wizard will set the same task sequence variables in either case, and the "Recover from domain" step will notice that the unattend.xml didn't do the join.
Thanks, -Michael Niehaus Senior Program Manager, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit [email protected] http://blogs.technet.com/mniehaus
I have one question for you. I use a reference TS and i don't want that the reference computer joins the domain.
My CS.ini uses the joindomain and credentials (see below).
I removed the "recover from domain" from my reference TS.
But my reference computer still joins the domain !!
Do i need to modify unattend.xml on my TS ? Domain settings are empty there. I don't understand why it does not work !

If you configure MDT 2012 U1 database and add in the computer, does that replace the need for task sequences?
Also can you use make and model only and not bother about creating new computer objects under Database > Computer ??

  • Can the MDT Restart Computer step boot in WinPE?

    Hi
In a Configuration Manager TS the Restart Computer step has the option: what to run  after restart "The boot image assigned to this task sequence"
that allows the computer to boot in WinPE after the restart.
The MDT task sequence doesn't have this option, is there a way do the same in MDT and boot in WinPE using the Restart Computer step?
    Thanks

If you cannot startup from a Tiger DVD then:
    a. The installer disc is bad.
    b. The optical drive is bad.
    c. The hard drive has failed.
    d. The RAM has failed.
    e. There's been some other major hardware failure.
You can try booting from the Apple Hardware Diagnostics CD that came with the computer and run the diagnostics to see if you can identify a problem. The memory tests are unreliable unless you run the test in loop mode for several hours.
Be sure you are starting from the Tiger DVD properly:
    1. Insert Tiger DVD in optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    3. Release the "C" key when the spinning gear appears on the gray startup screen.

  • MDT 2012 - Failure 9701: Unable to find any version of USMT, unable to perform user state migration. Failed to run the action Restore User State. DNS Record does not exist. (Error: 000025E5; Source: Windows)

I am having trouble trying to capture a new Windows 8 image with WDT 2012.
    My Setup -
    Server 2012
    WDS
    MDT 2012
    Windows 8 ADK
    Hyper-V
I have created a new task and I can get the image to successfully deploy the image to a VM but it seems to fail at the Restore User State task.
Once the install Applications task has finished I added a Suspend task so I could customize the image a little. Upon resuming the task sequence is where the above failure message appears. I can see it gets to the next step (which is 'Restore User State')
but that seems to be where is crashes.
Does anyone have any advice on what I might be doing wrong or what I can do to resolve the above issue?

WAIK being installed was probably your issue so I wouldn't bother disabling the restore task. It is used to migrate user data, docs, and settings on refreshes, not new builds. It doesn't affect CopyProfile, just note that data will be migrated on refreshes so
some aspects may change, ie wallpaper, shortcuts, etc but what gets migrated with USMT can also be configured.

  • MDT 2012 Refresh Scenrio, USMT to Network, only captures settings but not restoring

    Hi
I really appreciate your help on the following scenario:
    1. MDT 2012 installed with WAIK 7 (USMT 4.0)
    2.CustomSettings.ini includes those parameters:
    UserDataLocation=NETWORK
    UDShare=\\mdt\UserData
    UDDir=%Computername%
3.after Windows 7 migration I can see in UserData folder the migrated Computer name folder which contain USMT folder and a .mig file
4.unfortunatly, the migration does not process the "Restore User State" Task
note: if I'm looking at the BDD log I can see a line: "No user state to restore, exiting"
    PLEASE HELP!
אם תשובתי סייע בפתרון לשאלה, אנא הצבע כמועיל, תודה. Best Regards, Ori Husyt - אורי הוסיט

You could try running the script manually (needs to be run before the final summary screen):
    cscript.exe ZTIUserState.wsf /debug:true
See if that gives you anything to go off via the command line.
Nope didn't change a thing in the log file of any significance.  Still says that there is no user state to restore in ZTIUserState.log

  • 2012 R2 servers hangs on restart

I´m not 100% sure what happend, but it seems that after October patch releases, multiple of my lab servers are hanging on restart or shutdown. I run one 2012 R2 datacenter to host multiple 2012 R2 VMs. Lately, I patched them up (since it is a lab, I don´t
have a pilot patching practise on servers).
    The symptomps are:
    - Server does not shutdown or restart (physical or virtual)
    - Server does not respond on CTRL-ALT-DEL request (apperently still running shutdown or/and update) actions.
    So far I´ve done:
    - held power button for a minute to kill power several times in different situations
    - gone through event viewer
    - command sfc /scannow
    - command chkdsk /F on all drives (some error fix on one volume, other were clean).
    - Left Hyper-V host for hours to hang on "restarting" phase (no hdd led activity here)

    Hi yannara,
Glad to hear the problem has been solved and thanks for your sharing .

  • User State Migration Data Capture Failure MDT 2012 Update 1

    Hello All
Trying to capture data on a Win7 x64 machine so that I can keep the data and restore once the computer is done re-imaging.  This is an offline MDT deployment on the same computer.  See the error below:
CNAME loop detected. (Error: 000025EB; Source: Windows)
    Using MDT 2012 Update 1

Lots of good information out there.  Even stuff that says it's for MDT 2010 also applies to MDT 2012 Update 1 for the most part.  Here's a few to get you started:
    http://deployment.xtremeconsulting.com/2009/11/20/understanding-usmt-with-mdt-2010/
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/jj127984.aspx
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/mniehaus/archive/2009/07/01/mdt-2010-new-feature-12-usmt-4-0-hardlink-support.aspx
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/3758-usmt-mdt/
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/MMS/2013/DC-B301 (great video with Johan presenting, focused on USMT 5.0)
You should create a default Standard Client Task Sequence and look at the State Capture and State Restore groups to see what MDT sets up for you by default that you may have removed from your current Task Sequence.  But the direct answer to your question,
is that ScanState (part of USMT) is the part that creates a backup.  LoadState is the piece that restores it to a machine.

I'm trying out using MDT 2012 and WinPE 4.0, upgrading things. I've recreated things following templates in MDT 2012. I'm also using ADK and WinPE 4.0.
Issue I'm seeing is upon restarting into WinPE I see the screen showing Windows is Loading Files and the progress bar. I see the first one load through and then the second slower one load through. Once progress bar fills, it just does nothing and I'm left
looking at a complete progress bar.
I was trying obviously first using VMWare ESX 5.0 with no success, subsequently tried a couple of physical machines and those had no problems. I still want to get working on ESX since that will help speed up development and testing of the rest of the stuff
I need to upgrade. Tried a variety of SCSI controllers within ESX vms. I tried VMWare Workstation 9 with the mixed results as with the LSI Logic Parallel SCSI controller had success but not the others.
I of course at first tried making sure drivers were added with no change, although that still could be an issue with drivers I found to put in being incorrect.
More interestingly though is that I can of course install Windows 8 from install media just fine on these hardware, as well as if I create an ISO from the deployment share and boot to that it works just fine, so it seems to just be an issue when booting
    to WinPE on disk.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I did have the same problem with ESXI 4.1 and Windows 8.
I found a full solution with the following:
download the linked file at the bottom of this post and add the following options to your vmware-configuration
    file:
    bios440.filename =
"<full path to rom image>"  --> if file in folder of vm only "bios.440.rom
    mce.enable = TRUE
    cpuid.hypervisor.v0 =
    FALSE
    vmGenCounter.enable =
    FALSE
This worked for me for several environment with an older ESXI-invironment and Windows 8.

I can confirm that this works also!  Many thanks!

  • Windows Restarted Unexpectedly while applying systems settings after MDT 2012 deployment.

Posted this in another forum, so I figured give this forum a try.
    Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help or point me in the right direction.  I've created a couple of WIMs and deployed them out using MDT 2012 and WDS running on a Windows 2008R2 server.  The images are created and captured fine.  Sysprep runs with no issues
and I can deploy out the images to any PC/laptop I want.
The issue I'm running into is I can deploy out this image to 100 PC's without any issue.  Then all of a sudden, I'll get an error saying Windows restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error and can not continue.  This will then happen
from now on with this particular image.  For instance I've imaged a particular Dell Optiplex 790 multiple times with no problem, then all of a sudden I get this error on this or any other PC i image.
If I create a new image, the pattern just keeps happening over and over again.  I know it's not an issue with the physical computers themselves and I can imagine something is corrupting every image I have over a certain amount of time, so I'm sort of at
    a loss.  Driver issue perhaps?
    Thanks,
    Mike

I'm having what sounds like the same problem, which is why I posted it with this thread.  I have been using MDT 2013 on various computers without any issues and now I am receiving the
Windows restarted unexpectedly message after the image has been applied.  It will not get past the error.  We only recently began using MDT 2013 with windows 2012 R2, so I don't have much experience troubleshooting.  The only error I
found in the smsts.log is as follows:
User specified local data drive D: TSManager

I am deploying windows 8 (x64 &x86) custom wim images created using Hyper-v.  In my custom.ini file I use an IP address for my server and I join the computer to our domain.
    1) Could the IP address be causing the problem?  Should I use the full domain address for my server?
    2) If the WIM file is locked somehow or unavailable, what services should I turn off on the server?
    3) Any other suggestions?
I won't have access to the server for a couple of days and I wanted to get help before I start to make changes or create another image.  Thank you!
