Moved into new flat

I've recently moved into a new flat. The previous tenants were with BT and as far as I can tell, they moved out fairly recently. I've attached a landline phone and there's still a dialtone, but I can't make outside calls. I want to take over the phoneline and had hoped that it would be quite a simple process, but this doesn't seem to be the case!
-The first person I called said I needed a completely new phone line installed and it would cost me £170 (unless I took a broadband deal and an 18-month contract, neither of which I'm that eager to do).
-The second person I called said they can reactivate the phone line, but that this would require an engineer visit, and it would cost me £30. I made it clear at the beginning of the call that as I'm working full-time and living alone, I could only really have a visit at the weekend. We went through the very lengthy process of making the order, then after I'd given my bank details, he mentioned that there were no weekend slots available at all, ever. I asked if the engineer would certainly need access to my property, because I'd read on the website that this is something that's not automatically required, especially if there's no damage to the line and there's a dialtone. He couldn't really give me an answer on that, and said there's no guarantee that he won't need access to the property.
All a bit of a mess really! I basically only want broadband, I'm not too fussed about a landline. I'm quite confused about the whole thing too, as it seems that the account was stopped but the phone line has not yet been deactivated. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Preferably something not involving engineer visits, as I'm not keen on taking time off during the week!

If they were with BT, then line activation normally is done via software, and no visit is needed.
You can find out the number by dialling 1470 17070. If its a BT number then a voice will read it out to you.
You can tell BT the number, and they should be able to activate it for you, once credit checks have been done.
They may have had a BT line, but paying another provider for their calls. If that is the case, then it may take a bit longer.

  • Moved into new flat - How do i find out what the t...

I've just moved into a leased flat as a tenant and there is a BT box on the wall.
I'm looking to setup broadband etc but all providers require the telephone number at the property.  Is there any way to find this out?
I don't have a phone plugged in atthe moment so i'm assuming no dial tone etc.

Don`t assume there is no dial-tone, as quite often the line is simply "stopped".
Plug a phone in, and if there is dial tone, then dial 1470 17070.
If you are lucky it will give you the number.
You may however wish to ask for a different number, just in case the previous tenant, had problems.
If its not a BT line, you may get a different message.

  • Moving into a flat/new phone line

Hi, I'm moving into a flat on the 23rd April, and the people before are leaving on the 18th April.
There was a BT wall socket already in place which I noticed when we viewed it. Is there anyway I can check what I will need to do to have a phone line active by the time we have moved in?
    Thanks

    Hi Si_442,
Thanks for posting. You can place an order for telephone service here. There are a few options available for you to choose from. Let me know how you get on and if you have any problems drop me an email to [email protected] with the details and a link to this post for reference.

  • Moved into New Build in August - still no phone li...

I know from reading various forums online that ours is not a unique problem but I'm not sure how it can be resolved. In a nutshell we moved into our new build home at the beginning of August. Once we had received confirmation of the completion date I placed my order with BT for a new phone line. I was advised that it would probably be easier to sort out the phone first and then add on broad band when that was done. My order was placed on 31 July. I was told an engineer would attend on 20 August to connect us up. So far so simple but then it all goes wrong. I check online and the engineer should be with me between 8 and 1. That's all fine. I'm working but my husband will be in as he is on a late shift. Come 12.30 no sign of the engineer and now my husband is concerned that if the engineer does show up, he will need to leave for work before the work is done. I call BT from work - I'm told that the engineer is en route but that he's been delayed. My husband and I therefore agree that I will leave work at lunchtime and be in should the engineer arrive in the afternoon. I call up again in the afternoon - I'm told that there is no engineer en route, I should never have been told that. The connection is delayed because of some outstanding works that need to be done. Thus begins the series of lies and untruths that lead us here. I am told time and time again that works will be done by X date, only to receive a text message telling me that it is not possible to provide the update and that BT will contact me again in due course. Then begins the passing of blame - BT tell me that my developer hasn't completed all the ground works, my developer tells me they have and that it is Open Reach who are delaying. This goes on for many weeks and many phone calls. Eventually I'm told that there is to be a meeting between my site manager and Open Reach on the site on Monday 28 October. Surprise surprise Open Reach fail to attend. Not only that, but they they refuse to reschedule despite requests from the site manager. There is clearly a communication issue here - my developer tells me they have done all they need to do. They are therefore not going to do anything else as they don't know what they need to do. The meeting would at least (one hopes) have cleared that up. I have called BT today and been told that a site surveyor is attending our site on Friday but it seems no one has bothered to tell the site manager (obviously I have passed this on and asked him to call to check arrangements).
So here we are many weeks on and still no phone line. I don't feel like I am getting any sort of proper answer from BT about what the issue is and of course Open Reach won't deal with me direct.
Given the number of discussions about this on various forums, does anyone have any advice or tips on how to resolve this. I know it seems like a small issue but it is starting to impact on us. For example we had some bad news in August that required making numerous overseas calls which we had to make on our mobiles. It really is beyond a joke now and I cannot see that it will be resolved this year!

  • Moved into new house

This is the tale of my house moving saga!
Moved into house on the 16th July, previous house owners cancelled there BT line on the same day.
On the Monday I engaged a company called TitanADSL as they were my previous broadband supplier that had stated to me that they could arrange for a new number and give me an all in one package, of which up until then I had no complaints with there service.
I was given a go live date of Tuesday 27th July, On the Tuesday I received a phone call telling me that there was no spare capacity at the cabinet! and that a new line would have to be delivered to the cabinet.
Was told this would be done by end of play Wed, Thursday evening another phone call, now this one said that a BT line engineer has ordered a new line but there is not ETA and this could take weeks to resolve.
Has anyone else heard of this? or am I being fed a load of ....... (you can fill in the blanks  )

    This is quite common.
With the network being set up many years ago there are areas where there is a shortage of line plant.
Broadband has made this problem worse as you need an individual line for it to be provided and you can't share the line as with standard PSTN.
It can take weeks or dare I say months for additional line plant to be provided.  It's all to do with the network in your area and the pressure on available lines.
If somebody near to you ceased a line then you could be given that line when it becomes available.

  • Moving into a flat - existing BT line - charges?

I am moving to a property that currently has a BT line connected.
The old tenants move out on this weekend.
I move in the following weekend.
I assume they will terminate their account.
I know there is an active line there, but I heard that if they 'cancel' the line, then I might have to pay another £120 (or whatever) to have it reconnected.
What is the procedure with this? Can I keep the line 'active' and start a new contract?
Also, are there month-by-month line rentals? The lease is only 6 months.
    Thanks

If you can get the line switched while it's still active, you don't have to pay the fee. If it's been cut off, you pay, even if it's just re-connecting it at the exchange. I'd suggest phoning up BT and asking.
Be aware that almost all contracts with BT are a minimum 12 months. If you leave early, there's a charge. But you can transfer your contract to another property.

  • Moving into a new place

    Hi,
My friend and I are moving into a new flat and are attempting to get our utilities set up before we move in. How do I go about finding out if we have a Bt landline when I cannot get access to the property and do not have a known phone number for the premesis.
If there is no way to do that could you please tell me the conventional method of finding out so I can tell my letting agency as they do not seem to know ( appauling isn't it).
    Any help is appreciated,
    Cheers.

    Hi Tomkix,
I can check the address details for you to see if there is an active line. Please could you drop an email, to the email address found in my profile? Please make sure to include the address details and a link to this thread.
    Thanks

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Moving to New Build in 3 weeks from today and gett...

Hi there, dont know if anyone can help me? I am moving into a new build flat in 3 weeks time, and I have in advance registered the address with Royal Mail which is on the system and searchable for people, however, when I have tried to search for broadband and phone from any provider it is saying the address isnt recognised and there is no services available. I am beginning to panic now as I have done everything in my power to ensure that the address is registered. I have placed an order with BT for phoneline and broadband and apparently this is with another department but I haven't heard any updates. I am just getting really stressed that I am trying to get things sorted in advance, and because its a new build I am going to end up with no phone line. I have been assured there is a phone line fitted, and the bt box is literally been built outside our front door, so i know that it is set up for the flat ready. Can anyone give me some advice? xx

  • Trying to find out phone number in new flat

    Hi,
My fiancee and I have recently moved into our new flat, sorted out the rest of utilities and now moving on to setting up the internet.  We've found a provider we like, but they need the phone number for the flat to check what kind of service they can offer us.
I called our landlord/estate agent to find this out, and they said to call BT, which I tried, but whenever I think I get close to the right place, they ask for the phone number so they can direct me to the right place.
Is there some way to talk to someone without having to enter it, because its just the number that I need to know.
    Thanks for any help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

if it's a working line, then legally it was the previous owners, meaning you couldn't take it over, unless they might want you to prove that you are the existing homeowner. Plus if the previous owner's have cancelled then the working line could stop at anytime, meaning it would mess up your order to do a like-for-like transfer. If it is stopped, i.e. a dialling tone but can't make calls then all you have do is book an order with whoever you want to go with on the address and not the actual telephone number. The company you go with can check on the openreach system if there is a stopped/working line.

  • Imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

I am assuming you had iLife 09 on the old computer - when you moved everything over, that came along with it.
I also have older versions of iLife (on install disks) and just recently got a new 2012 Macbook Pro. I noticed that iMovie 11, iPhoto and Garageband (I think) are listed in my Mac App Store Purchases with a notation to "accept". So you might want to check MAS to see if the apps are sitting there.
Now, I have chosen not to accept them for now for two reasons: I have iLife 11 on a disk and prefer that rather than having it tied to MAS/Apple ID and as long as I have my disk version installed, I also still have iDVD which I use a lot. I'm not sure if "accepting" those three from MAS would wipe out my iLife 11 installs including iDVD (which would be unacceptable for me). So, since I already have the latest version, I've opted to ignore the "accept" and, in fact, will leave it like that - if I ever sell this machine, the buyer can then accept them if they want with their own Apple ID. So before accepting the apps (if they are listed in MAS), you might want to check to make sure that your iLife install isn't wiped out - that is, if you have iDVD and want to keep it.

  • Moving into temp house 2 mths,it has bt,can i shar...

I am moving into my Dads house for one or two months untill i find a new place. I am still under contract with BT and have bt broadband too. It will cost me £150 to get out of my contract, then when i find a new place it will cost me £130 approx to get bt back. Just for the sake of 2 months is there a way I can transfer my bt phone and broadband to my Dads address without disrupting his bt phone and broadband?? I dont necessarily want to use my phoneline or broadband, i just want somewhere to `store` it for want of a better word at little cost. I have heard of something called `Call sSgn` where the you can have 2 lines on one socket and the ring tone is different depending whose number is called, but what about broadband on this setup? Or does anyone have any other ideas? I hope someone can help save me almost £300.

If it would cost £150 to cancel, then it would actually be cheaper to order a new line at your father's address, and transfer to that - the fee for a new line is normally only £130.
Whether or not you have to pay £130 at the new address in 2 months depends on whether or not it already has a working phone line.  If the line is connected, there's no charge to take it over.
