My Equium M50 has no sound anymore

Hi there
I got a Equium M50-216. About four months ago I have been using it to watch a lot of DVDs recently without any problem until last night.
When I put a DVD on to watch there was no sound. This has happened with other DVDs and cannot understand what the problem can be. I have checked the volume control and made sure the Toshiba virtual sound is ON.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
Cheers

hi there
thought i might add that i just checked to see if i could get any sound with external speakers as i have been using the internal speakers up until now and i also cannot get any sound.
cheers again.

Probably is. They get dusty. Shut down your computer and clean it out with a vacuum (don't blow dust back inside).

  • Equium M50-244 has bluescreens and password was requested

    Hi all,
I need your help here please, my wifes Equium M50-244 just froze after 15 min. I thought taking the battery out would fix the problem, only now when you turn on laptop I get blue screen and a request for password that was not supplyed with computer.
Can anyone help before she beats the life out of me (shes big).

Either this is an incredible coincidence or I am now trying to fix your wife's computer. Let me know if it is the former.
Toshiba laptops have the facility to set a password to access the computer. Acording to the manual for this model, this can be done by running the Toshiba Password Utility software in Windows. The password gets stored on the CMOS chip that holds the BIOS data. The purpose of the Toshiba Password Utility is to deny a thief access to the computer but it is fraught with risk because of the difficulty in resetting the password if it is lost (or manifests spontaneously as in this case).
In principle you can reset the CMOS and therefore remove the password but to do this you would need to disassemble the laptop to gain access to the motherboard in order to temporarily remove the small battery thereon. I have not been able to find instructions on how to disassembe this model.
Toshiba Technical Support may be able to supply a password that will give you the chance to reset the access password. I'm not sure if you can reset it directly to null by this means but the Toshiba Password Utility will let you remove the password if you know what the password is. Catch 22 is that you have to convince Toshiba that you are the bona fide owner.
Or you may need to return the computer to a Toshiba Service agent.
Or on Ebay (US) you can buy a USB Password Removal Key. I think this is aimed more towards thieves than legitimate owners.

  • ODD on Equium M50 does not work properly

    Hi,
Im having "issues" with playing DVD's and CD's on the internal DVD/CD drive on my Equium M50-192
While playing DVD's the images stutter and the audio is very slightly out of sync with the video. When playing CD's, they play slow.
Have tried various players (Nero, Intervideo etc) and all seem the same.
Have also tried an external drive and this seems to solve the problem for 99% of the time with DVD's (still get the occasional stutter) and CD's play OK.
    Has anybody got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
it sounds like your ODD has a hardware problem which needs to be fixed by an toshiba technician which means you must bring your machine to an authorized service partner.
So I suggest you to visit the following link:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT
Pick your ASP which is the nearest in your region and then let them do the rest.

  • Equium M50 will not recognise the LAN port - error: Network Cable unplugged

I own a Toshiba Equium M50 and have problems with the Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller.
I used to connect via an 'ADDON' Modem/ADSL Switch and had no problems. I then replaced the ADDON with a 'NETGEAR' DG834G ADSL Modem/Router to gain the wireless port, and since then my machine will not recognise the LAN port. <error: Network Cable unplugged>.
I know that the cables are OK as I used them with other laptops and had no trouble. I can also plug in a PCI card to connect without any problems. It looks to me as if the Marvell Yukon 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller has a problem with the netgear Modem/Router.
Anyone out there with a similar experience and some advice/suggestions?
    PLEASE

    Hi
For me it doesnt show like a LAN card problem but your router is a problem.
Check the device manager if the LAN card was properly recognized. If there are no yellow exclamation marks so everything is ok!
You can try to delete the LAN card from the device manager and after new reboot install the LAN driver again.
The issue has stared after installing or connecting the new Netgear modem router.
Therefore I would recommend to checking firstly the settings or to update the firmware on this router.
I have found additionally these useful websites

  • Equium M50 - Touchpad issue using Win XP home

Equium M50 sm59E with XP home
I went from everything fine to an optional update from ideacom from windows knocking out my touchpad and keyboard (lots of other people have done the same and their is a growing army of us growing ) I have resorted to a new install that i have done twice now .............
I have got the keyboard working in that if you start up then put in stand by.
Then bring out of stand by. The keyboard stays on (if you dont ....then when you press a key it nocks the keyboard out ).
The touchpad i was puzzled as it wasnt even showing in device manager even though i got the relevant driver from toshiba download site.
But then i found it as a hidden device in device manager with a *!* on it and it says the driver is either not installed, not working, or the wrong one.
I also have none usb devices as hidden devices that are all ok except one that says, serial, but it has no option for to install a driver .
I read somewhere that a man had the same problem with XP and he used a download of Toshiba for downgrading OS and that worked for him but he cannot find it now .
This is reported to be a problem because of human interface updates that are messing up keyboards and touchpads ...................due to touch screen softwares in updates .
Can anyone help me out here i'm at all time low now and have exausted all avenues

This horrible driver crippled my friend's PC with Windows Vista even uninstalling the device driver does not restore the functionality of the mouse. According to some sources it disables the PS/2 port so just how to restore this I'm not sure without further investigation.
For now a System Restore is the only feasible way to restore the mouse the only problem is not everyone is familiar using the keyboard for navigating but for the most part it would involve cursor keys, tab key, and the space bar.

The problem seems to be caused by following file ati2dvag.dll

The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop this usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

Of course there could be a fault with chipset but diagnostics does not identify any problems. If I run windows in safe mode display is ok.

By the way: the Internet is full with such discussions but the fact is that this happen on different desktops and laptops. It has nothing to do with YOUR notebook model directly.

  • ALSA often doesn't produce sound anymore after suspend

    Hi,
For some years this has been fine and pulseaudio worked fine after waking up from suspend.
But for about one or two month it more and more often doesn't. After waking up from suspend I just don't hear sound anymore. I can't find any error message anywhere, just that it doesn't output sound anymore. Killing it with "pulseaudio -k" or "pkill pulseaudio" or "pkill -9 pulseaudio" doesn't solve it. But "telinit 1", waiting until pulseaudio is dead and then "telinit 5" solves it so it is definitely not my sound driver.

Any ideas how I can find out what's wrong?

Maybe the power saving for my sound chip triggered the problem. I had this in my startup config:
    echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
I have removed it and hadn't had that problem so far. If it doesn't happen in the next time I'll mark this as solved. :-/
    EDIT:
Nope, it didn't help. Today after waking up from suspend it didn't output any sound although everything seemed fine.
This time I tried transferring the sound over the network with pulseaudio. That worked.
Then I killed everything and even went to init 1. But there not even mplayer -ao alsa worked and I had to reboot to get my sound back. So, not pulseaudio's fault, but alsa doesn't work right.

  • WEP Encryption Key not remembered when restarting the Equium M50-244

I am running an Equium M50-244 Laptop, with a BT Home Hub 7838 wireless router. Nearly everytime I power up this notebook it has no wireless connection. I therefore have to go into Control Panel, Network Connections, and get it to find a new connection.
Then have to type in WEP Encryption Key number twice to get a new connection.
This is obviously a lengthy procedure so I need to get the Laptop to recognise the Encryption Key and store it for the next time I power on.
I am running Windows XP Home with Service Pack 2, and a Norton Anti Virus and Firewall.
Any help would be much appreciated
    Peter

    Hello
I agree with Louis. Your WLAN cards support WPA encryption and, if possible, you should use it.
Anyway: for WLAN configuration try to use Windows settings and defined WEP password should be remembered for your WLAN. I have configured it on many different notebooks and after choosing the listed WLAN the password was already defined and only thing that must be done is to click on button Connect.

  • Equium M50: Have no windows recovery CD?

I have recently purchased a Toshiba Equium M50 laptop computer and have been given no windows XP Home recovery CD's in the event of ever having to re-boot the system. I assumed at the time that I would be able to make my own copy from the hard drive but this doesn't seem possible or if it is I'm not sure how to do it.
I've been told that Toshiba should supplt these. Is this true? If so, how do I go about getting these CD's sent to me? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Toshiba do not supply Windows XP install CDs only a Product Recovery CD/DVD in the event of an unrecoverable error. This is because the disc has all the required drivers and software pre-installed and finely configured. It also avoids the nagging issues regarding software licensing and activation. I can understand your need to have a boot CD but I would recommend you create something like BartPE instead. - http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder
In the event of a problem BartPE will provide you with a Windows XP working environment that boots directly from the CD-ROM. Not only that it also fully supports networking and external USB flash/hard drive drives perfect for backing up important data.

  • Can I expand the RAM of an Equium M50 with 1GB memory module?

Someone told me that Equium M50 only recognise 512 MB memory module. The Toshiba manual does not specify. It is true?
    Thank you for any help
    Cheers

    Hi Francisco
No, this is not correct. The guy who told this was not right and I assume he has no Equium A50 experience.
As far as I know the memory on Equium A50 notebook can be upgraded up to 2048MB.
So you have to use 2 x 1024MB (1GB) memory modules if you want to upgrade the memory to 2GB.
For me its clear. The Equium A50 recognizes bigger memory size as 512MB.
Do you know what modules are compatible and can be used???
On the Toshiba Options & Accessories website you will find the supported modules:
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-2M51)
    PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-2M1G)
    I hope I was clear enough ;)

  • Equium M50-164: Question about Fan usage & battery timer

    Hi !!
Just got hold of my equium m50-164 laptop today and I wanted to clarify a few issues
    firstly,
I flashed my bios with the latest version and upon the reboot the fan kicked in at full power and didn't turn off until i put the laptop into standby mode, this seemed to of rectified the problem but the fan seems to be kicking in a lot more than compared to before, luckily the fan isn't kicking into 100% speed but more like 15% - 20% every 30 secs or a minute then goes into silent mode, the fan hasn't hit 100% unless i do a reboot :),
I know the fan will speed faster based on the cpu usage etc (thermal) but is this normal? I spoke to support and they wanted me to have an instant replacement but I said I would wait a few days to see if it would calm down :)
and finally looking at the power meter and other software tools there seems to be no battery calibration, with previous laptops i noticed that numerical calculations are made based on battery usage and time left [i.e a timer] but with this laptop i kind find a timer - i would of thought tha every laptop has this facility nowadays !
    any advice would be helpful
    cheers

    Hi
Please dont be mad on me but I really dont understood why your first step is BIOS update. The unit is delivered with actual BIOS and it is really not necessary to make it before you notice some problems. I just hope that you have enough experience with it because I have read a few postings on this forum about BIOS damage while BIOS update and to make it good again costs a lot of money.
Your BIOS is updated and there are new values that should be used by Power saver utility (responsible for cooling fan monitoring). I recommend you to remove preinstalled power saver, restart the unit and install it again. I hope that the result will be better.
Battery calibration I dont know what you want exactly but the battery usage can be control by power saver tool. On the task bar there is symbol for power saver and if you move the mouse pointer on it the battery capacity and left time will be shown.
