OS X Mail strangness

Not sure how to describe this problem, but I will give it a shot.
Lately when I recieve some emails, I can see the person the email is from, and what the title of the email is, but when I open the email, it contains a previous email (sometimes from months ago).
For example, I got a email from a coworker this morning and I see the title. However when I open the email it's an email that was an amazon.com order receipt from a couple of months ago.
This only occurs in mail. If I log into mobile me, I can see the email with no problems.
Any ideas? I have never seen an issue like this and have no idea how to fix it. I was thinking about deleting the mail app and all it's other stuff and reinstalling it, but would rather keep some of the mail I have (I do have back ups).
Thanks for any insight to solve this.

Your index is messed up. The Envelope Index is the file that has the pointers to the actual messages.
Quit Mail
Delete ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index (if you are scared move it to the desktop, but really this is okay)
Start Mail.
It will say something about importing messages... it is rebuilding that Index.

  • Adding attachments in Mail - strange defaults???

When I am attempting to add attachments to an email in Mail, I get some strange defaults that appear.  Everything indicates that I am in DOCUMENTS but what I see is GarageBand and iTunes.  If I choose anything else and then go back to DOCUMENTS then the list of my documents appears correctly.  However, the first time I hit the attach (paperclip) icon, I always get this.  Any ideas?

Not sure why you can't add attachments other than by dragging onto a new Mail window, but you might want to make sure that you have Windows-Friendly Attachments selected in Mail's Edit menu. Also, clicking on the attachment in the body of the email and selecting 'view as icon' sometimes helps recipients receive the attachment.
On a general note, sometimes Mail's handling of attachments is lacking, in my experience - especially when sending them to PC-users. Most users don't seem to have a problem but some do. The only way I have managed to ensure that Mail handles all attachments as hoped and ensure that recipients have no problems with them is to install the paid for plugin called Attachment Tamer. You can run it in demo mode to test it before deciding to buy: http://lokiware.info/
(I've no connection with Lokiware, just happy to recommend their software which I have used for some years).

  • IPad Mail strange text encoding - preview and body different

When receiving some messages in iPad Mail, the body text uses wrong text coding. There is no specific rule, it's ot messages coming from one specific server but from a number of different ones.
The strange hink is that in the preview pane on the left, the text is presented fine (with all special characters correctly dsiplayed) but the body on the right is wrong.
Where would i find text coding settings? How come the iPad knows what's there but displays it wrong? Did anybody meet this eslewhere, mys case is a Czech language (Central European encoding). I didn't see this on my personal iPad ever. My colleague gets frustrated...
See attached screenshot how it looks like. (Which I can't attach, the uploader script ain't working in Safari... will try later)
    Thanks for any advice.

There aren't any on an iOS device.  The only thing you could try would be to switch the OS language to Czech and see if it made a difference, but I doubt it will.  Best report the issue to Apple:

  • Apple Mail, strange inbox messages deletion

I’m curious if anyone experienced something similar to this… We’re 10 people small business with all Macs. Apps we use are Apple Mail, iCal, MS Office 2008, Adobe Acrobat, and most other famous applications. For our email, we all use Apple Mail with IMAP. We used to use POP but we wanted to see same contents on Apple Mail, iPhone, and webmail, so we switched. One of the employees experienced strange problem yesterday, and I haven’t found exactly what caused that incident. She checked her email before she went to bed around 10pm, and there were about 200 messages in inbox. She did shut down her machine. Then, next morning, she turned on her mac and opened Apple Mail. There were no messages in her inbox. Over 200 messages got deleted or moved somewhere else. She found some in deleted folder, but still not everything. So, as I heard this issue, I checked on her web mail. Yes, I saw a bunch of messages in trash folder. So, I moved them all. I talked to our web host and made sure it wasn’t by them. And I’m the only one besides her who has her password. So, this seemed really strange, and I’m wondering what caused it. I’m curious if there is a software bug in Apple Mail. I do see some machines’ Apple Mail can’t quit, so the user must force quit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Thank you for reading my post. Appreciate your time.

    Hi Ernie,
Thank you for your reply and explination.
1/ Yes, the instructions did help. It was obvious, but I haven't ever used Mac's. They are the best, but switching over it's not the easiest.
2/ Have been thinking about changing to another mail client because of this (Thunderbird). Usually everything with iOS X makes sense, but having the MAILBOXES option and sub-structure (Inbox, Flagged, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash) is beyond me at the moment (a lightbulb might go off in the future ...)
3/ Not sure why, but now everything is working fine. Could be becuase of the update to iOS 6.

  • Can no longer send mail - strange errors/activity

I'm hoping a guru can help me. This is driving me insane. My mail has worked perfectly for years. Over the past 2 days, it can no longer send mail. I can recieve, but not send.
It first began with error messages saying that it couldn't use Port 25. My ISP doesn't block this port, so I tried using four other mail servers from other email accounts. Again, all give the same error. Now when I try to send a message, they just sit in my out box. When I try to resend, it does nothing. The activity monitor quickly states "Copying message to outbox". That's it.
I'm at a loss. Any help is really appreciated.

Ignore this message, I JUST WORKED IT OUT.
It looks like there is another unsecure wireless network in our building and for some reason my Powerbook defaulted to using that, rather than my own wireless account.
So with this other connection I could surf/recieve but I couldn't send out.
The variables never cease to amaze me.

  • Other types of Mail strangeness

I ported over my mail from my PowerBook to my MacBook Pro and I am now having 2 issues
    1. I have messages in my inbox from before May 3 of this year. They are still there however they will not come up in the preview window, and when I double click on them, the open in a window and are blank. No headers no anything just a blank window. I have no idea why but I need to get these messages back!!!! HELP
    2. When I try and delete something in the inbox now, it greys it out and doesnt remove it until i close out of Mail. This is more an irritation than anything else, but I would like to fix it
Any and all valid suggestions would be of a great help. Thanks in advance
    James

I am wondering if the Mail folder was creating prior to using 10.4 and Mail 2.0? In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail and find an account folder for an account used the longest. Open the account folder, and if a POP account locate the INBOX.mbox folder and open it. Does it contain anything other than one Info.plist file and one Messages folder (full of files but no need to list)?

  • IMAP Gmail + Apple Mail = strange behavior?

I'm using Apple Mail 3.0 and Gmail IMAP. I have several mailboxes (Gmail calls them "labels", I guess) set up in Gmail's webmail application, and they are mirrored on Apple Mail. I have also set up Gmail to download mail from three different POP account.
Here's the problem: for some reason, when I click on a message that has been downloaded from one of the POP accounts in the inbox in Apple Mail, it still appears as "unread" in Gmail webmail and in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Apple Mail.
Somehow Gmail doesn't know that I'm clicking on the message, so it stays marked "unread". Because it stays marked unread, it is not automatically deleted after 30 days as it should be (I've been told that the 30-day period is not related to the date the message was sent, but to the time it was first accessed.) This means that I have several months of old messages stored on the Gmail server (and in my Gmail folders in Mail) that I don't want there.
Or it means that I have to manually go into the Gmail "All Mail" folder, either on Gmail webmail or in the "All Mail" Gmail folder in Mail on my computer, and manually click on the messages to mark them as read. This gets VERY tedious throughout the day.
Anyone else encountered this issue and figured out how to resolve it?

Sorry, I just noticed something. The problem is not only with the mail that comes in from the Fetch accounts. It also happens with mail sent to Gmail.
In the left-hand column of Mail 3.0, there's a folder called "Gmail" with a triangle next to it. Let's say a new mail comes into my inbox to my Gmail address. If I click on it in the inbox, it gets marked as unread in the inbox. However, I still see a "1" next to the Gmail folder indicating there's an unread message. If I click on the triangle to expand the folder, and then click on "All Mail", the folder seems to "update" itself and the unread email is marked as read (without me clicking on the actual message).
Otherwise, it seems to stay marked unread. Why is this?

  • Weird sort order in Mail

Mail is sorting my messages very strangely. For example, I have a folder with about 2000 messages ranging from sometime in 2004 until this morning. When iPhone Mail pulls it up the first page of messages is from sometime in late 2006. It gets the total number right, so I think it's seeing everything...it's just picking a weird (and not particularly useful) timeframe to show.
Any idea what might be going on - and, more importantly, how to fix it?

I can't help you, but I join you with the same problem ....
Mail downloaded from some time in the past ...
But only for sent folder. In .mac my sent folder actually orders the mails strangely too as opposed to my trash folder that in both the iphone and .mac are ordered properly.
    Anyone any help?

  • Weird Menu Glitch in Mail

When I right click in Mail, I get a weird glitch in the menu that comes up. The first line is blank. I can't click it. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if it's just me.
    Here's an example.

  • Software Distribution wrong link

    Hello
I recieved a approvation mail for my Software Distribution Request / Acrobat Reader
the download link on that mail seems plain wrong !
    - I don't copy the link here since Adobe advises in the mail not to share it...-
this link hops to a choice form where I'm redirected ...
to the standard 2-step download process ( 1st download a 950KB loader, then loader takes forever to download the real package in some hidden place )
    - I don't copy the link here since Adobe advises in the mail not to do that-
this is precisely what we want to avoid : 35 people waiting for 35 * 60MB downloads
We'd like to store the big package on our LAN to upgrade 35 PCs, is that possible ?
Is there a way to download a real full install package for Reader 10.3 / Windows XP + W7/ French ?
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks, Dave
The link you give *is* the link I recieved by mail
Strange enough : I made the 3 choices again on that page,
and now I can download the full package we need ...instead of hoppin' to a consumer page, as it happened yesterday
problem solved, though I don't know how !
    thanks again.

ICloud : cannot sign in with my Apple ID (windows PC), solution ?

I know this sounds silly - have you used the apple ID on ios5? it has to be icloud registered on an ios device?
Is it linked with a mobileme/.mac account - you need to migrate first at me.com/move
Recently I have had to put my password in 3 times for everything(icloud.com - findmyiphone app - outlook mail, strange as I know its the correct password

  • Every once in a while when I open my mail or a page I get nothing but strange lines of symbols.  Many of the symbols are black triangles with question marks in the center.  I completely reset it like new, but problem still exists

Every once in a while when I open my mail or open a page I get lines of strange symbols like black triangles with question marks in the center.  I have reset the ipad2 to new condition but the problem still exists.

A reset does not make tthe iPad "like new."
First, let's ensure that we agree on just what is a Reset...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

E-mail messages that I either sent or received months ago are showing up in my mailbox and receivers' mailboxes. • Strange Mail problems after Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update

All of a sudden, Mail has started behaving strangely on me and I believe this could be caused by the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update that hasn't been released yet. Whenever I create a new message and click "Send", instead of sending the message, Mail turns it upside down and starts filling my desktop with copies of any attachments included in the message.
Another problem is that all incoming messages seem to disappear just after being received. After several hours looking for them everywhere, I've finally been able to find some of them under my keyboard, but I don't know how to put them back in the Inbox, nor do I know where the rest could be located.
I've found a rule in Preferences set up to move all incoming mail that arrives before it was sent into a custom mailbox folder named "Time Traveling", but the missing messages aren't there either. Also, I don't remember ever having created that mailbox folder nor the associated rule. Could it have been created by a virus in a message I haven't received yet?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Ken, sorry to hear what happened to you.
My post was just an April 1st joke. When I posted it, I had no idea when Mac OS X 10.4.6 would be released. If you look at it, you'll see that nothing in my post makes any sense (it requires a little sense of humor which, given your situation, you might not have at this moment).
Now, Mac OS X 10.4.6 has become a reality. Posting in this thread about real problems could cause confusion and reduce the likelihood of getting help, so I suggest you start a new thread instead. Maybe a forums Host should lock the thread?
