People can't hear me when on a call.  Speaker phone works

People can't hear me when on a phone call.   I have to use speaker or earplugs.  I've tried suggestion with head phone and checked all volume levels.   Now people tell me l sound like I'm in a tunnel or can't hear me at all.  Any ideas how to fix this?

Hey az786,
Thanks for the question. Great troubleshooting! It sounds like you have completely isolated the issue, the following article outlines the next step:
iPhone: Can't hear through the receiver or speakers
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
10. If restarting the iPhone doesn't resolve the issue, try restoring the device.
11. If the issue persists, go to the Service Answer Center - iPhone for information on service.

Matt M.

  • I am having multiple problems with my iphone 4s, people can't hear me when I call, text messages don't always send, calls go straight to voice mail. I have all bars, have hard rest 3 times. I have called apple 4 times and gone to a store. No help.

I have had the 3g, 3gs, 4 and little if any problems. I made a major mistake buying the 4s. What a horrible phone. I must say, apple service is at best, BAD. Here are the basics. I am on the same network, I call the same people, I use the same text messages as I did with the 4. With the 4s, I will call someone and they will not be able to hear me. I have to hang up and recall. Or the phone just does nothing when I press call. Text messages acts like they send but when I go back the have been sent. Sometimes the calls go direct to voice mail.
Here's what I have done. Reset, did not help. Called apple, advisor said she would call me back in 5 minutes, after waiting for 5 days for the call, I recalled, they walked me through the same things I had already done, then said to take it to a store. So they set up an appointment for the only day I could get to it, 1 1/2 hours away, on my grand son's birthday. That was okay if they fixed it. So they hard reset it, we had to setup 4 email accounts, they would not allow me to restore because they said it was a software problem. So I had to download all the apps, lost a lot of data. No fun. But if it worked! So Monday back at work, guess what, same thing. When home and did another hard reset. Still no lick. Called apple again. They said they would replace my phone, all they needed was to put a hold on a credit card for $899 or drive a 1 1/2 hours to a store.
So anyone know a good andriod phone.
PS I got a email asking about the service each time and each time I told them what a horrible phone it was and how bad service was. I have yet to hear back. I guess they do not read them!

You're not speaking to Apple on in this forum, nor will someone from Apple see this post.   We are just users like you and I.

  • People can't hear me when I make or receive calls even though I can hear them.

My iphone 4 was working fine yesterday but today it's not!
I couldnt see why it wasn't working properly so thought i'd try the old "if all else fails turn it off and turn it back on again" lol and when I instantly made a phone call after doing that the person at the other end could hear me fine but then a few minutes into the conversation it went again and they couldnt hear me. I'm definitely not accidently touching the mute button as I have checked this already.
    Any ideas please? Thanks

    Try this...
Close All Open Apps... Sign Out of your Account... Perform a Reset and try again.
Reset... No Data or Settings will be lost...
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

  • People can't hear me on my voice calls.

I have an iphone 4 which i just bought used.  When I make calls the other person can't hear me!!  Sometimes its right from the beggining of the call but sometimes its half way through my call and some calls have no problem at all.  My software is up to date and when I tested my mic by using the voice memo feature it worked fine.  whats wrong?

I was really frustrated with this when I 1st purchased my I phone - but I have now figured out how to stop it!!
I searched lots of blogs on the internet and I couldn’t find anything that would make the problem stop! However after hearing that some applications stop the microphone on your phone working properly I figured it out. You need to close the applications correctly.
I figured out how to turn off my applications by fluke - My sister was showing me how to save my battery by turning off my apps & it ended up killing two birds with one stone!
On the menu screen double click the main menu button. A bar will appear at the bottom of your screen with icons of all the applications you have open & running. On the screen hold your finger over one of the application icons until it starts to jiggle & the small red delete symbol (looks like no entry sign) appears to the top left of the icon symbol. Now cancel off all the applications you have running by tapping on the red symbol.
I have tried & tested this too. When people havn’t been able to hear me when I called them - I ended the call - turned off all my applications - called them back again & they could hear me!
I think it may be my app games which I download that might be the problem - Not safari - nor my address book - but I cancel them all off just to be sure anyway!
    I hope this helps!

  • Ipone 4 people cannot hear me when i make calls.

I synced my iPhone 4 and now people can not hear me when I make callow. Tried.connecting Bluetooth and same issue.
I tried presenting and this did not fix either.  Please help.

    Hello TbOne,
I highly doubt this Issue has anything to do with your recent syncing to your computer, it is a common fault that is becoming more and more predominate globally as time goes by.
You merely thought back to the last interaction you had with your phone and connected it to your current Issue.
May i ask if you can record a Video or use skype and see if you can hear sound, if indeed you can hear sound then your Phone is faulty and if you haven't a permanent loss of functionality of the microphone for voice calls there soon will be.
My Advise would be to first see if the sound works when recording videos.

Here's one article that might help.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1630
Also, try these steps in this order.
Toggle Airplane mode off then on. Leave off for at least 10 secs
Toggle 3G Mode off then on. Leave off for at least 10 secs.
Power phone off and then on.
    Remove and replace SIM card.
Those will fix that issue the majority of the time. If not, you'll need to restore the phone.

  • People can't hear me on the other end when I make facetime calls from my Imac

People can't hear me on the other end when I make facetime calls from my IMAC

I had the same problem on my brand new iMac and Apple Care solved it for me. Very simple.
    1. Restart your computer
    2. As soon as you hear the chime, press the SHIFT button until you see the Apple logo, then release it. This will put your computer into safe mode. When your computer boots up to the home screen in safe mode, Facetime will NOT work. That's normal.
    3. After your computer finishes booting up to your home screen, restart it normally. That solved the problem for me.
Apple Care said that putting the computer into safe mode results in a diagnostics check that can fix certain problems. I hope this helps someone else.

  • IPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them

iPhone 5S: does anybody has this problem. During a successful voice call all of a sudden people can't hear me while I can hear them. Signal is strong and call quality (me hearing the other) is still very good but it looks as if I’m going on mute while I’m not muting my iPhone. When dropping the call and re-dialing it works fine again. It’s a brand new iPhone 5S but it now happened already 4 or 5 times in 2 days.
It feels like a hardware/iOS problem and not a network issue. It happend with iOS7.03 but I just see 7.0.4 is available so will install that one now.
    Thanks in advance for feedback
    Best regards,
    Marco

    Hello Jeff,
Thank you for providing so much detail about the issue you are experiencing with the audio on your iPhone.  I would be concerned too if the audio on my iPhone was not working unless using speaker phone.  I found an article with some steps to take when you are experiencing issues like this:

  • HT1444 FaceTime calling FaceTime can't hear me when talking but can hear them on macbook pro  but using FaceTime iPhone works good family has mac pro same but it works fine

face time on mac book pro 15.5 cant hear me talking but can hear them family has same computer but it works fine facetime on Iphone works good to

Does your mic work in System Preferences?
System Preferences > Sound > Input
There is an Input Level meter that should light up when you talk. Just to make sure your mic and Mac are working.
Which mic are you using? Are  you using the built in mic on an Apple Display? I have Apple's LED display and every time I use Facetime, as in place or take a call, the mic input volume gets reset to a level so low, people can't hear me. I have to manually raise the mic volume back to where I had set it. When I end the call, Facetime resets the volume back to where I set it. If I don't reset the mic volume level on each and every call, people can't hear me.
I called Apple on this. They downloaded a log file tool to my Mac and took some logs. Then they called me back and said this works as designed. Incredible.
So, if you are using Apple's LED display, this may be your problem. Note that the mic volume level gets set low and reset back only during a call. If you check it before a call and then after a call, it looks fine as if nothing changed. Open up the Sound prefernces and watch it get reset in real time.

  • I can't hear anything when making calls no dailing tone or anything but when I try and audioface time it works fine please help

I can't hear anything when making calls no dailing tone or anything but when I try and audioface time it works fine please help

    Hi Nfrith1,
Please take a look at the article referenced below, the same as in my original reply.  The receiver on the iPhone does not have anything to do with the speakers on the bottom of the phone nor your microphone.
    Clear the receiver
The iPhone receiver won't work properly if it's blocked or dirty. Here's where the receiver is:
Follow these steps, testing after each:
Make sure nothing is blocking the receiver, such as a case or film.
If you have a new iPhone, remove the plastic film on the front and back of the device.
Check the receiver opening to see if it's blocked or dirty. If necessary, clean the receiver opening with a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush.
While you're on a call, turn on speakerphone. If you still can't hear, then your network or reception could be the issue. Try calling again later or from a different location.
    Restart and update
Restart your iPhone and test again.
If there's still no sound or poor sound quality, update to the latest version of iOS.

  • 4s microphone has always malfunctioned (people can't hear me) for first 10 seconds of outgoing phone calls. I've synched w healthy Macbook Pro, replaced SIM cards, replaced iPhone 4s, called Applecare (no mic issue admitted). OS problem?

4s microphone has malfunctioned on most outgoing calls for many months. People can't hear me for first 10 seconds of outgoing phone calls. I've synched w healthy Macbook Pro, replaced SIM cards, replaced iPhone 4s when Apple Store thought it was probably a hardware problem, called Applecare (no mic issue admitted). OS problem??? I think so! [Possible] good news: for the past 2 days, since updating to 5.1.1, no one has reported problems hearing me!
I'm concerned Applecare folks did not admit to me that so many other 4s users also has malfunctioning mics.

    Why would that even matter?
The device obviously has a hardware issue and is under warranty, take it to Apple for replacement and move on with life.  No reason to make things difficult.
