Print jobs slow to leave Mac print queue

Mac laptops running 10.5.6. IP printers added, using LPD with queue of lp. There is a Xerox WCP232, HP Laserjet Series 4/5 and another print queue on the systems. Several presets created as laptops are shared, each preset is configured for a secure print with the users code associated with the setup. When multiple jobs are printed, users notice that the print queue gets backed up and the jobs slowly leave the print queue on the mac. This happens with several laptops. When only one print queue exists, the print jobs go through quickly. This can only be replicated on the subnet which the laptops are used, Xerox cannot replicate the issue nor can other users on the network.

If you have a computer still running 10.5.8 that will likely be ON when you want to print to AppleTalk Printers, you can set up the printers on that Mac, then declare them "Shared" from that Mac.
They will be seen from the rest of your Macs as Bonjour Shared printer that reside on the 10.5.8 Mac.
Re-Install those printers on your other Macs, using Bonjour Shared @ 10.5computername to Install them. You can print again!
If this solution will not work for you, post your Printer model numbers are readers can help find other approaches to get them going in a "no more AppleTalk" environment.

  • HP PSC 500.My print jobs do not leave the print queue

My HP PSC 500 has been working perfectly with my relatively new computer with Windows 7. However, now anything I want to print just goes to the print queue and no further. I've printed a test sheet but only from the printer itself. I tried it from the computer but that went to the print queue and no further.
I've deleted all jobs in the print queue and they have gone but still everything goes to the print queue and no further.
I'm really worried this is a computer problem but hope it isn't.

I noticed your post about the wireless connection issue you're having with your Officejet 8600 Plus. As you mentioned, the printer just might need a firmware for starters. There could also be other factors in the printer disconnecting, which I will post a guide to as well.

  • TS3147 Print job "completes" but remains in the queue without every printing.

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer won't print. The print job "completes" but remains in the print queue. I've tried all the basic solutions, but nothing works. I know the printer is connected to my network as my two Window 7 PC's print to it just fine. Everything is connected through a Netgear R6300 router. I've tried to reinstall the printer driver on the Mac from the HP installed CD, but it fails to complete the job. I get "an error occurred while trying to add the selected device"...."unable to communicate with the printer at this time" message. Any suggestions?

What version of java? 1.3 printing is quite slow with graphics; 1.4 is greatly improved.

  • Server Admin not showing jobs in print queue

    Hi All,
I'm not sure if others are having this problem or if it's just me.  I am running Mac Server OS X 10.6.7  When I go to Server Admin and select "Print" and then "Job Status", I get a list of all the server's print queues.  In the pane below the list of queues, there is a section that says "Jobs on Queue:" which then allows me to select any specific print queue.  The problem is, no matter what queue I select, I am never able to see any of the print jobs going through the queue.  I have sent multiple jobs to different printers on the server, all while watching the "Jobs on Queue" window for the appropriate printer.  In every test, I have never seen ANY print job show up in that window, even though all the print jobs print out fine.  I have even tried pausing a printer to let jobs queue up, and still nothing shows up in that window.
I have also tried the same tests while viewing the prints queues from the "Print & Fax" System Preferences pannel directly on the server.  Still no luck.  Everything prints out fine, but I am unable to ever see any print job hitting the queue.
The reason I even noticed this problem is because a user accidentally printed a 500 page document by mistake.  The user called me to stop the job, but I was unable to see anything in the queue to kill.  I tried deleting the job directly from the printer, but this just caused the printer to lock up.  I would try powering off the printer and restarting it, but as soon as it powered back on, the print job would restart.  I even tried restarting the server, but as soon as the server came back online, the print job started again.  Finally, after hunting on the web, I tried logging into CUPS via http://localhost:631 and was able to see the print job listed there and finally delete it.
Is there any way to monitor print jobs on the server in real time?  I found this previous archived thread describing what appears to the same problems using Mac Server OS X10.5.8, but there was never any solution listed before the thread was archived.

Is there anyone using printing services on a Mac server at all that could comment on whether or not you see the print jobs listed in the queue when printing?

  • Random jobs stopping print queue

I have 3 printers attached to my iMac via a USB hub, a canon i9100, an epson SP 220 and an epson SP 1800. I have experienced this with all of the printers, so I don't believe it is a problem with the printer software.
Most of the time everything works perfectly. But approximately 10% of the time the document will just not print. I thought it might be something to do with InDesign, since 99% of the documents I print are from InDesign, but I have experienced the problem with TextEdit files, emails, web pages (camino and safari).
There doesn't seem to be any particular cause. The job will queue up, and then all the sudden the printer will stop all jobs. The only way to get them started is to delete the job from the queue. The strangest part is that SOMETIMES reprinting the document will work fine, while other times it just continues to stop the print queue.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Or is it just a ghost in my machine.
    iMac 17 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It's possible that you have a corrupt font. That will stop a printer. Check the fonts you are using in a document that's causing problems, and maybe change the font, and see if it works. It's easier if you have a font check utility like suitcase.
If you dont, maybe figure out what page of a document is causing the printer to stop. That will narrow the search.

  • Where is the printer queue stored - and how to delete all queue jobs?

I ran into a problem after I installed the Roll paper feeder on my Epson R1800. All of a sudden files will not print anymore.
One thing that may cause a problem is that there are two previous files (pdf I think) that someone else tried to print yesterday looking for a different printer on regular Letter size paper that are still in the queue because they did not print successfully. Everytime I tell Photoshop to print my photo on the Roll paper, those two old jobs pop back up on the printer queue gui and the system stops saying "wrong paper type for this job". Then I delete those two old jobs so there is only the Roll paper one left but it just sits there and wont print. When I launch the utility to check is all is kosher, sometimes it will give me the ink cartridge levels without a problem but sometimes it claims a communication error. I have re-checked the connection and everything and all is OK. When I launch the printer utility and tell it to print a Nozzle Check test, it prints it without a problem so there really is no prob with the communication.
When I restart the computer and the printer and try again, the two old jobs that I deleted in the previous step always reappear. So I wonder if, those two pdf jobs are kinda screwing with the system and should be deleted. But as i said, everytime I delete them, they look like they disappear from the list but my photo job just sits there on the queue without printing. The jobs are not stopped and there is no Hold on this one. If I quit and re-launch the print job, the old ones re-appear in the queue. So they must be stored someplace and are not deleting correctly. Does anyone know where this cue file is stored and what it is called? I have looked in Application Support and in Preferences but I can't see anything that looks like it.
I have downloaded the drivers from Epson for this printer again but that doesn't do anything either. I am using 10.4.11 on an 24 inch iMac intel 2.4Ghz. I only use the stock Apple utilities, no funky third party addon except for the Epson drivers. The printer utilities are:
    Epson Printer Utility v3.01
    Stylus R1800 utility v4.7(161.10)
    Thank you for any help.

Hooray, we found the problem! BOO, we already found the problem elsewhere!
Sooo, it seems we have some kind of Permission problem, have you Repaired Permissions ad rebooted?
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Or we could maybe go back to that window, click on Printers, remove it? (Thinking perhaps the jobs will go away with the printer!?)
Or would you like to delve into the hidden folders/files to try to handle this?

  • One print queue for each job?

We have customer jobs that last for a year or so. We have a networked HP printer. Is it possible to set up multiple print queues for this same printer, so that we can keep track of which print jobs should be charged to each customer? I can set up a new print queue connected to the printer (although with "Kind" as "Generic PostScript Printer" instead of the printer model) and then I can print to it from the server; and it shows up in the printer list on the client stations (although with a diamond next to it), but when I select it in the Print dialog on the client station I get a spinning beachball and have to force quit e.g. Word. Is this an impossibility, or is there a way to do it?

Beginning with Windows Vista (and also true for Windows 7), the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance must have its Advanced=>Spool Print Documents ... setting to Start printing immediately instead of either of the other settings. The other settings will yield the behaviour that you describe.

The "Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver" would be the "Adobe Printer".
Perhaps a tweak to your installed Adobe Printer to reflect Dov's guidance will resolve the issue.

  • Print Jobs not clearing "Deleting - Printed" message from Print Queue

The jobs print fine but the message Deleting - Printed doesn't clear from the print queue.
The two printers having the issue are HP Color LaserJet 3550s using the External HP JetDirect en3700 (J7942A-61033).
Our Print Server is an HP BL25P running MS Server 2003 Enterprise Edition / SP2.  This issue started about two weeks ago only on these printers.  I downloaded the newest drive (dated 2007 version 61.63.461.41).
I have deleted and recreated the printers on the Print server and installed the new driver.  Still having the same issue.  To clear the Print Queue we have to restart the Print Spooler Service on the Print Server.- this causes the "Deleting - Printed" jobs to print again which could be days / weeks after they were originally printed.
We don't want to keep having to restart the Print Spooler.
Any one having a similar issue and know off a fix.   I have tried everything I have so far found on the Web.
    Thank you.

  • Print Queue Will Not Retain Incomplete Jobs

Occasionally when printing to a network device I get an EOF message and the file does not print. When printing from Quark 6 the file stays in the print queue and the status changes to "stopped". Interestingly however, when printing from Quark 7 and an EOF is encountered the file does not stay in the Held queue but rather goes to the Completed queue when it has not actually been printed. Does anyone know how to get around this? I've found that when this occurs it's generally just a matter of resending the queued file to the printer once more and everything works. But when a file drops into the completed queue I can't retrieve it which means reprinting the entire (really large) document.
I've tried dragging the files from the Completed queue to another network print queue and then back again to the original printer. But this doesn't work either. Also tried saving Postscript files and then dragging them into the queue but this always leaves me with an EOF. No exceptions on the postscript file option (not sure about this, but suspect it's a topic for a different discussion thread).
Thank you for any assistance you can offer.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post.
Here is something I need to confirm:
    1. Does this issue occur with other network printers?
    2. Does this issue occur when printing a text file?
If this issue just occurs with HP LaserJet P4015n, it is caused by the specific printer driver.
Now please perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue.
    Clear spool file
    1. Stop the spooler by doing the following:
    a. Click Start , Settings , Control Panel , Administrative Tools , then Services .
    b. Scroll down the list of services for the Print Spooler.
    c. Right click Print Spooler and click Stop .
    2. Delete the spool files
    a. Open My Computer.
    b. Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS\ .
    c. Delete all of the files inside of this folder.
    3. Restart the spooler.
    a. Click Start , Settings , Control Panel , Administrative Tools , then Services
    b. Scroll down the list of services for the Print Spooler.
    c. Right click the Print Spooler and click Start.
    Change the spooling format
Set the spooling format to RAW, and then try to print directly to the printer instead of spooling the print job. To do this:
              a.       Click "Start", point to "Settings", and then click "Printers".
              b.       Right-click the printer that you are using, and then click "Properties".
              c.       In the Advanced tab, click "Print Processor".
              d.       Set the default "Data type" to "RAW" for both "WinPrint" and "ModPrint".
              f.        Click "OK", click "OK" again, and then close the Printers dialog box.
    Does it work?
    Hope this helps.

When i print the printer queue opens and shows the job as "stopped".  Supply level shows  "information is not available which maybe part of problem...thank you

The first thing you could try is a reset of the printing system. Please note that this action will remove all printers and scanners from the Printers & Scanners preference pane.
With the reset complete, unplug the Epson USB cable from the Mac for a minute and then reconnect it. This action should result in the printer being added again to the Mac automatically. If this does happen, then see if you can print again.
If the printer is not added again automatically, open Printers & Scanners and click the plus button to add the Epson. Once this is done, then see if you can print again.

  • TA22258 Why is the print queue showing jobs not sent?

  • Random print jobs showing up in print queue when printing...

Whenever I print something, one or two other random files will show up in the print queue.  The printer will not try and print these additional jobs, and it does not prevent another print job from printing, but each time more random files will show up.  The print queue will fill up with these additional jobs until they are manually deleted.  What a pain.  Does anyone have a solution???

These random files can be communication files and are used to interogate the printer about its status. Typically they will be processed by the printer and then vanish from the print queue. So if they are not being processed and you are having to manually remove them then there could be a setting in the printer that needs to be changed or you have to check from an updated driver.
To confirm if it is the printer queue / driver that is checking the status, you can open System Information (Applications > Utilities) and select Printers in the left column. You can then select the printer in the top right pane and see its information in the bottom right pane (or if this is the only printer you have the information will appear in the right pane). You will see an entry called Printer Commands. If it shows something like Report Levels then this confirms that these files you are seeing are for checking the printer status.

  • Jobs show twice in print queue - won't delete and won't print

I have an HP Laserjet P1006 running on a HP laptop running Windows 7 64 bit.  Printer has worked fine for 8 months but recently ran into problems.
When I send a print job to it, the printer doesn't print.  If I open up the print queue, the job shows up twice.  If I try to delete the jobs, they don't delete.  I can use the HP Print Diagnostic Utility to get the jobs cleared out of the queue, but the same thing happens the next time I try to print something.
A Few Other Items to Note:
    - I don't get any error lights on the printer.
    - I brought home a laptop from home running XP and installed the printer using the CD.  The printer worked fine with that computer, so I don't think it's a problem with the printer hardware.
    - I have tried uninstalling the printer, both using the CD that came with it and with the latest drivers/software from the website.  Didn't do anything (same problem occurs when printing a test page).
    - HP Print Diagnostic Utility doesn't find anything wrong.  Likewise, if I right click on the printer and click Troubleshoot, that doesn't help either.
    - I've tried restarting the print spooler, but that didn't do anything.

Hard Reset – While printer is powered ON, pull the power cord from the printer then from the wall. After 30 seconds reconnect power to wall and printer. This will trigger a ‘dirty power up’ and restore the printer to a known good condition (if it is possible). No user settings are lost with a ‘hard reset’.
This ‘Hard Reset’ is one of the most powerful tools to use when the printer hardware is not functioning properly!
