Solaris C/++ programming q: what is "_reaper" ?

Hi,
If I run my multithreaded C++ program under dbx, I see a thread running that started off its call stack in "_reaper" (as far as dbx can tell without complete debug symbols for all system libs...). Does anyone know what this thread does?
I am noticing now that someone introduced a pointer bug into my program's code somewhere, and it is coming up in a deterministic way on all platforms, so this one shouldn't be too hard to debug. But what's curious is that on Solaris, the crash symptom is a message on the screen like this:
signal fault in critical section
signal number: 11, signal code: 2, (...)
libthread panic: fault in libthread critical section: dumping core (PID: xxxx LWP x)
stacktrace....
AND if I then examine that core file, the program appears to have SIGSEGV'd in the thread with this call stack:
=> [1] freestack
[2] _reap
[3] _reaper
I expected the SIGSEGV to occur in the program thread that actually did the segmentation fault. Any insights would be most appreciated, as I couldn't find any in the Solaris Multithreaded Programming Guide. (For what it's worth, another message from dbx if I run this under the debugger is " signal SEGV (access to address exceeded protections) in _free_stack at 0xblahblah).

Well, I'm not 100% sure what _reaper is, but here is my somewhat educated guess.
As per the Solaris Internals book by Mauro & McDougall (page 301):
"A kernel thread, thread_reaper(), runs periodically and cleans up zombie process threads that are sitting on deathrow. The list of zombie threads on deathrow is not allowed to grow without bounds (no more than 32 zombies), and the zombies are not left on deathrow forever."
As for 'deathrow'...
"exitlwps() does one last bit of work before it returns to exit(). It places a zombie's kernel threads on deathrow."

This is a MacBook Pro 15" (Model number A1286) running Mavericks. Hard drive is fine but system software has been corrupted. I cannot simply restore from Time Machine as it will copy the corrupt system.
Will I have to find all of my serial numbers before I can launch any of the programs?

Ok, I had many problems with the installation, but after three attempts I've got it working. This might work with a previously failed installation - but there are other guides in the forum to get this position -thanks also to the many threads on the this - which pointed me in the right direction
Previously I'd had issues with Error 1935, (on Shared Technologies), Blue screens due to clbudf.sys from Cyberlink Instant burn which blue screened (thread abort exception) this install as also iTunes. (I haven't installed this now...
My scenario. Win 7 (clean) -> Win 8 -> Win 8.1
After setting up the setting up the system.
I ensured the following : (although begrudingly) so I could do a system restore if needed.
-I disabled Anitvirus & Firewall
-enabled Volume Shadow Copy Service
I then ensured I had downloaded Adobe Application Manager 8.0 (read this may help) - I installed - but I did not run it as I believe it updates to Adobe CC Manager( from previous attempts)
i also downloaded and installed the 32 bit versions of :
C++2008 redistributable (32 bit)
C++2008 SP1 redistributable (32 bit)
I installed Premiere Elements (64 bit) - note I had previously installed Sony Vegas 10 Platinum, which downloaded and installed NET 3.5/Net 2.0 adding to windows features, which many have helped - not sure.
I installed Photoshop Elements (32 bit)
I started both apps and updated them to 12.1.
Happy ... finally - hope this helps others - or at least helps adobe improve their installer, diagnose the issue for others.

I typed in the IPv6 address of the printer in the address feild of firefox.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.

The situation with Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 and version earlier than it (in particular 3.0/3.0.2) is disturbing with regard to MPEG2 Activation.
Adobe document says that it no longer supports MPEG2 Activation for versions 8.0/8.0.1 and earlier and points the users of this group of products to a version later than 8.0/8.0.1, the current latest version 12.
But, I am not sure of the real answer. The doubts are cast by the findings of some who have claimed to have solved the problem using a uninstall/ccleaner/reinstall scheme when they have been met by the MPEG2 Activation issue.
But, I would ask....Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your Windows 7 64 bit computer? And, are you working with version 3.0 as the 3.0.2 Update?
Is it still possible to run your Premiere Elements 3.0/3.0.2 on the prior computer on which it was installed?
Also, does your Windows 7 64 bit come with Windows XP Mode
Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7
which is essentially a virtual Windows XP Professional SP3 32 bit.
As last resort, and highly experimental, but would you have time to experiment by replacing your latest version of QuickTime with the QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 and then determining what happens with your Premiere Elements 3.0/3.0.2 Windows 7 64 bit situation? Do not bother with the MPEG Streamclip program download, just the QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1.

When I had installed the app, there was been written: "open", and when I pushed this, NO reaction of the iPad! And crazy too: I am NOT able to find the app itself at any screen of the iPad!!! I can see it only in the list "bought" items. With other words: The app is neither to be seen nor I am able to open it in the "list".

You don't even say what platform you are on, or any other details that may help others assist you.
If you are on a Mac, try opening your file in GraphicConverter (they have a demo version) if that doesn't open it, nothing will, in my experience.
I assume you have tried Adobe Illustrator already to recover.
You may also have a JPEG of your complete file (flattened) in Bridge Cache.
On the Mac you'd find it in your User ~Library (NOT the Root Library ):
Users > yourname > Library > Caches > Adobe > Bridge CS6 > Cache > 1024 > jpg(fileID)number Filename.psd.jpg
The user ~Library is hidden, but you can make it visible for an moment or two. Ask Apple if you don't know how.

As Babowa says, get an external disk. You should have one for normal backups anyway.
Actually, I'm a strong fan of having multiple backups. 3 copies including the original, 2 different backup formats, and 1 backup off-site.
And when you have your iMac in for service, if you have just 1 backup at that point in time you have just 1 copy of your data. I get paranoid about my data.
But if you are just making 1 backup, I would use SuperDuper (free for a full clone, and extremely good software, as is Carbon Copy Cloner, but it is not free anymore).
And then I would "Boot" from the clone, to make sure it was a good clone.
Booted from the clone, I would then use Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility to zero the original disk, as suggested by Babowa, so that when they replace the disk, the original disk containing your data is not in the hands of strangers. A single pass of zeros is more than good enough as an erase, as the chances are no one is going to spend the money needed to try and read the erased data. It is not like you have any super secret data, just stuff you do not want the casual data theif to get. You will find the zeroing options under Disk Utility -> Erase -> Security Options
Just make sure you actually boot from your clone before erasing your original. And if you are paranoid like me, make 2 backups, then erase the original :-)

If the problem is iTunes slowing down and not appearing to run correctly, you should check this Apple article out-> Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
You may want to try resetting Winsock as a temporary fix.
1. To do so, please do the following in an administrator user:
Windows Vista and Windows 7: Right click All Programs and choose Accessories > Command Prompt. Choose to open as an administrator.
Windows XP: Click Start > Run and type in cmd.
2. Enter the following command:
netsh winsock reset
3. Restart the computer and test the issue.
Note: If the issue returns, third-party software may be reinserting the LSP.
