[SOLVED] Qemu and host-only networking

Hi,
I want to setup qemu with one Windows 7 guest. This guest should be able to connect to the hosts samba and postgres server, except external networks such the internet. I've read the archlinux qemu wiki page and it seems i need to use a bridge and a tap device to accomplish this. So far i've did as root:
brctl addbr br0
ip tuntap add dev tap0 mode tap user me
ip link set tap0 up
brctl addif br0 tap0
'brctl show' gives
bridge name bridge id STP enabled interfaces
br0 8000.16cad3ab6bda no tap0
When i start the vm as a user i get
qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -vga std -device e1000,netdev=tap0,mac=DE:AD:BE:EF:96:32 -netdev tap,id=tap0,script=no,downscript=no hdd1.qcow2
qemu-system-x86_64: -netdev tap,id=tap0: could not configure /dev/net/tun: Operation not permitted
qemu-system-x86_64: -netdev tap,id=tap0: Device 'tap' could not be initialized
Ok. Need to handle some permission issues. If i launch the above command as root, the VM (Windows 7) starts, but i don't have any connection to the host (Windows 7 complains about an unindentified network).
With the example scripts 'qemu-ifup', 'qemu-ifdown', the ip forwarding and the sudo configuration as described in the QEMU - ArchWiki - Creating bridge manually section, Windows 7 can indeed connect to the host, but also to the internet, what i simply don't want. The reason might sound silly, but everytime a Windows guest tries to connect to the internet, thus trying to obtain an ip from the dhcp server, the host completely looses its connection to the router. It seems my network hardware doesn't like this.
Anyway, i think i'm only missing one little thing. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you for this, I've tried lots of docs&tutorial, finnaly got this and success.

Ok, found a solution. It's surprisingly simple. I've discarded the libvirt way, because the official archlinux virt-manager package is pretty unusable and configuring a working vlan for libvirt seems pretty complicated. I still couldn't get a working network device on the guest side.
For completeness, here is what i've done. I use a tap and a bridge device and dnsmasq. I did not activate ipv4 forwarding like mentioned in the wiki! The following steps need to be done as root.
First i've created the bridge, set an ip address and started it
brctl addbr br0
ip addr add 192.168.179.1/24 broadcast 192.168.179.255 dev br0
ip link set br0 up
The subnet should differ from any other device. In my case the only other device eth0 has the ip 192.168.178.xxx.
Next i've created the tap device for use by qemu respectively the guest
ip tuntap add dev tap0 mode tap
ip link set tap0 up promisc on
I don't know if 'promics' is really necessary, but there's no need to assign an ip to the tap device.
Now i've connected the tap device to the bridge
brctl addif br0 tap0
Until now this was approximately my first try. I've tried to use static ip on the guest side, but had no succeess. The important point was to run dnsmasq on the bridge
dnsmasq --interface=br0 --bind-interfaces --dhcp-range=192.168.179.10,192.168.179.254
In effect, i finally got working ip on the guest network devices (this may take some seconds). Pinging the host succeded and neither of my guests (SliTaz Linux, Windows 7) were able to connect to external networks, thus the internet.
I've started the guests with
qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -netdev tap,id=t0,ifname=tap0,script=no,downscript=no -device e1000,netdev=t0,id=nic0 <imagefile>
In my case, i had to omit the automated exection of scripts. This way i was also able to execute the above qemu command as an ordinary user.
Just to finalize this description for samba:
By adding 'br0' to 'interfaces' in smb.conf, guests were able to connect to the host samba service as usual.

  • QEMU host-only networking using tap devices

    I'm trying to setup host-only networking on my QEMU VM running Arch (actually, the Archiso; there is no Arch installation present yet). A short summary:
    What I want
    connect to the host from the guest system
    connect to the guest from the host system
    using a tap device (to avoid user-mode networking) on a network bridge (to connect guest and host)
    Eventually, I want to run an AMP stack on the VM for web development. (Let's, for now, ignore the fact that I might need an internet connection later on to install packages)
    What I tried
    I first set up a tap device:
    ip tuntap add dev tap0 mode tap
    and then a network bridge:
    BRIDGE='qemubr0'
    brctl addbr ${BRIDGE}
    brctl addif ${BRIDGE} tap0
    ip link set up dev ${BRIDGE}
    The relevant parameters I run QEMU with are:
    qemu-system-x86_64 \
    -net nic \
    -net tap,ifname=tap0,script=no
    QEMU starts without any errors, but trying to ping the host from within the VM results in:
    -- VM:
    # ping 10.0.2.2
    connect: Network is unreachable
    (FYI: 10.0.2.2 is supposed to be the default IP address of the host system (?) according to http://wiki.qemu.org/Documentation/Networking )
    Relevant logs/outputs

    I must admit that my theoretical and practical knowledge on networking is quite limited, so this might be trivial. I'd be happy about any hints in the right direction. Thanks

    You are scratching your right ear with the left hand, so to speak.
    Let's say on the host, you have a bridge, br0, with an appropriate IP, serving as a gateway (created with your favorite network manager), and you'd like to start a VM whose virtual drive is arch-x86_64, then this is all you need to do:
    $ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -drive file=arch-x86_64,if=virtio -net nic,model=virtio -net bridge,br=br0
    inside the VM you'll have eth0 (or whatever), and on the host -- tap0 plugged into the bridge. This is all courtesy of /usr/lib/qemu/qemu-bridge-helper which is a suid binary.

  • [solved] problem getting vbox host only networking going on arch host

    New arch user here, been running for 2-3 weeks.  Finally came across something I can't wiki/google my way through, trying to get host only networking going.
    So....  I started by trying the graphical virtualbox manager.  File -> preferences -> network -> add, which gives:
    Failed to create the host-only network interface.
    Callee RC: NS_ERROR_ABORT (0x80004004)
    Tried the following also, with no luck:
    > VBoxManage hostonlyif create
    VBoxManage: error: Code NS_ERROR_ABORT (0x80004004) - Operation aborted (extended info not available)

    Thank you sir, that's exactly what I needed.
    Now that I look, I see mention of this in the VirtualBox Extras section of the wiki, but not the VirtualBox or Advanced VirtualBox Networking sections.  I have edited the Advanced VirtualBox Networking wiki to add mention of this.

  • [SOLVED] Qemu with host networking space.

    Hello, I'm trying to lunch Qemu with host networking, so the VM's can talk to each other, what I did so far is creating the following bridges ( Actually virt-manager did that for me ):
    br0, virbr0 -> virbr0-nic ( the interface )
    and have the following network interfaces:
    br0, lo, virbr0, wlp1s0
    What I think I'm missing is something on the code... I'm lunching with:
    qemu-system-x86 -kernel kernel -cpu host -m 2024 -hda image.image
    I did review the following manuals
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/QE … networking
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Network_bridge
    I'm missing the right command, thanks.

    Sorry if I am late to the party... but here's how I do this with bridged networking.
    Let's assume that I have 2 guests, an ArchLinux and Window 7. These are the start scripts:
    : cat start-arch.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    vm_dir="/export/scratch/VMs"
    scripts_dir="${vm_dir}/scripts"
    . ${scripts_dir}/macaddr-gen.sh
    # Generate a random MAC address
    gen_macaddr mac
    # Start the emulator
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -smp 2 \
    -net bridge,br=br0 -net nic,macaddr=${mac},model=virtio \
    -drive file="${vm_dir}/arch-x86_64-1",if=virtio -nographic
    : cat start-win7.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    vm_dir="/export/scratch/VMs"
    scripts_dir="${vm_dir}/scripts"
    . ${scripts_dir}/macaddr-gen.sh
    # Generate a random MAC address
    gen_macaddr mac
    # Start the emulator
    qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 3G -smp 2 \
    -net bridge,br=br0 -net nic,macaddr=${mac},model=virtio \
    -drive file="${vm_dir}/win7-x86_64-1",if=virtio \
    -usbdevice tablet -vga qxl -spice port=5930,disable-ticketing
    : cat macaddr-gen.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    # Generate a random MAC address
    gen_macaddr() {
    local str i macaddr _mac=$1
    str=$(cat /dev/random | tr -cd '[:xdigit:]' | head -c 12 | \
    tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]')
    i=0
    macaddr=""
    while [ $i -lt 6 ]; do
    macaddr=${macaddr}${str:0:2}":"
    str=${str:2}
    let i=i+1
    done
    eval $_mac=\${macaddr%:}
    : cat /etc/qemu/bridge.conf
    allow br0
    Note, that the MAC addresses of virtualized NICs in the VMs must be different. If you now do
    : ./start-arch.sh &
    : ./start-win7.sh
    Assuming that you have already set up  a bridge br0, qemu will create several tap? interfaces and insert them into that bridge (using the qemu-bridge-helper suid binary), and you'll have a virtual LAN rooted at br0.
    EDIT: Added a slightly faster random MAC generator and comments.

  • [Solved] DVDs and CDs only work the first time I put them in

    First lets get this straight before it is asked later on down the line. I am a 6 year Linux user and 2 year Arch user. I am currently using xfce4 and thunar as my file manager with thunar-volman installed. This has been a problem for the past year or so. I use my laptop most of the time (also Arch 64 and working like a dream) so I only try fixing it every so often to no avail.
    I can put in a CD or a DVD and play them with VLC. Here's the catch: after I eject the CD/DVD and put in another one I can't play it or find it. The first time I put one in I even get an icon on the desktop. I don't think it's reasonable to have to reboot everytime I want to play another DVD (time wasted by constant rebooting is one of the very long list of reasons I don't use Microshaft products). I'm stumped, I can't be the only one, but my forum searches yield no treasures.
    Last edited by astrozombie (2010-02-03 01:00:15)

    Thanks for trying, however, I posted what I use for a reason. I am using VLC, and I am a minimalist so I don't want a bunch of programs for doing the exact same thing. VLC is the only player for Linux that plays MTS files out of the box, so I'm not interested in switching or adding another.
    Anyways, it's irrelevant because as I said before, thunar mounts it correctly the first time I put in a DVD or CD and displays an icon on the desktop for the disk. Therefore the problem is most likely hal related, since this began about the time we switched to hotplugging, and besides this I love hotplugging so I am also not interested in disabling that (who know what problems I'll introduce for my MAC keyboard and webcam if I do that). Yes I've read the hal and dbus wikis.
    I can even get a USB CD writer to work with xfburn, however it's a relic and I think that's a sorry work around when I have internal drives that, in theory, work just fine. I wonder if it has anything to do with the drives being IDE when I used the SATA install option on the install disk (I did a fresh install last week) since my hard drives are SATA.

  • Internet access to the guest system for Host-Only configuration

    Hello,
    I have a windows host linux guest vBox environment and it's configured as host-only. How can I enable internet access within the guest? I am towards the end of a RAC installation and upon running buildcluster.sh, it says the recommended RPM "oracle-validated" not installed or has unsatisfied dependencies. It seems i have quite a few RPMs need to download and thus prefer to be able to connect to the internet within the guest so i can do it from the Oracle yum server.
    Thanks,
    Harry

    Hi,
    this won't work so easiliy with a "Host Only" network.
    You either need a bridges network or a NAT network.
    Easiest thing probably will be to add another interface (network) to the VM and assigned it as bridged.
    Then download/update oracle-validated and remove the interface again.
    This way, you don't need to change anything on the server.
    Regards
    Sebastian

    I need to use VirtualBox on an almost daily basis for work... I would highly appreciate you help so thanks in advance!

    Hi, I'm not sure I fully understand your issue.
    Are you telling VirtualBox don't allow you to add a Host-Only Adaptor via main menu File -> Net -> Add button? I once hit this problem and was lost some days because I come from the *buntu-land and all this configuration was nearly automatic there. If this is your problem you should first download and install the rigth AUR package, tha one working for me is virtualbox_bin now at latest version 3.1.8-1, you will need to install also virtualbox-additions. After you installed VirtualBox follow the instructions provided by packagers:
    IMPORTANT NOTES:
    - Run "vbox_build_module" as root every time your kernel is upgraded, to
      compile the module for the new kernel version.
    - Add your user to the vboxusers group:
         gpasswd -a USERNAME vboxusers
    - Add "vboxdrv" to the MODULES array in your "/etc/rc.conf"
    - Add "vboxnetflt" to MODULES if you want Host Interface networking.
    - Add "vboxnetadp" to MODULES if you want Host-Only networking.
    - If USB does not work for you out-of-the-box, add the following line
      to "/etc/fstab":
         none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=108,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0664 0 0
    Once you do that you'll be smoooooth 8-D

    It is now 2 days i cant access my server and neither ping it, also the website hosted on it is also down.
    The 1und1 has following 2 options
    1) using putty i can connect to server command prompt using administrator but cant run any gui application
    2) Server Rescue mode: where i get special environment to start, stop services, access registry and command prompt.
    Till now i have tried lot of setting to enable network connectivity but not able to success

    Hi,
    According to the result of "ipconfig /all", the physical adapter dosen't appear.
    Please check if the physical network adapter works properly. We can verify this in Device Manager.
    To open Device Manager by using the Windows interface
    Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    Click Hardware and Sound.
    Click Device Manager.
    If the network adapter is working properly, please make sure that the Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4) has been checked in the properties of the physical network adapter.
    If issue persists, please try to uninstall the Oracle Virtual box.
    Best Regards.

  • UDP Send and Receive with Remote Host Only Issue

    I am seeing an issue using the UDP Sender and UDP Receiver example VIs that ship with LabVIEW. If I open the VIs and do not change any of the settings and run the UDP Receiver VI and then the UDP Sender VI the Receiver VI never reads anything. However if I change the boolean on the UDP Sender VI to broadcast it works fine.
    The example program by default uses localhost so I have also tried to use the UDP Receiver on my Real Time controller and the UDP Sender on my laptop with the boolean set to remote host only and the remote host string set to the ip address of my real time controller and this did not work either. But if I change the boolean to broadcast it works.
    I would like to be able to send to a remote host only and not have to broadcast my UDP message to everyone.
    Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

    Elizabeth,
    Thank you for the response. I am using LV 8.2.1 and wasn't seeing any errors.
    However I am not seeing the issue today, I must have been an issue with our network yesterday.

  • The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'

    I have been searching for a fix for this issue for sometime.
    The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '5.0'
    and
    The VM and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'
    this error have been posting on the host server 2008 R2, with a hyper-V running server 2012 R2, which is the eval version vhd from Microsoft.
    I have tried the patch on the server 2008 R2 host and the nic delete and rescan option with varied reboots and such between each step of the process just to try every possible combination.
    The error persists. Are there any other suggested solutions for fixing this problem. Also the drivers have all been updated along with the system firmware.
    thanks,

    The hotfix states Server 2012 in the VM. You stated Server 2012 R2 in the VM.  MSFT is very precise in this language - Server 2012 != Server 2012 R2.
    Two distinctly different releases of Windows Server.
    In this case the N = the running release of Hyper-V.  In this case your Hyper-V Server at release version 2008 R2.
    The +2 = the current version of Windows.  In this case that is 2012 R2.  Two releases ahead of the version of the hypervisor you are running.
    I tossed in the link to Ben Armstrong's blog article as that is the ONLY (and still definitive statement) support statement regarding this configuration.  He posted that article at my request after many folks posting in this forum with strange behavior
    in this configuration.
    "supported" in this context means that if you call CSS, you will be told the following: 'yes, you have errors in the event log.  We will not fix that.  This is an unsupported configuration.  But that does not block the OS in the
    VM running.  If you want the errors to go away, we suggest you upgrade your Hyper-V Server to 2012 R2.  That configuration is supported.'
    That said, it can impact other functionality of the VM that rely on Integration Components in the VM and the Services of the hypervisor.  There is most likely small things that will not work.

  • [Solved] Arch and virtual networking, not working as planned.

    Running pfSense trough virtualbox, running virtual machines behind it.
    What setup do I need, to get wireless LAN solely to pfSense. Currently I use the bridged setup in virtualbox as the WAN side. LAN is a host only adapter vboxnet0, all other VM's connect through that virtual adapter.
    I would like to use a second host only adapter on a different subnet, but, once I create the adapter vboxnet1 and add it as second LAN card OPT1 to pfSense, internet stops working on the first LAN, though I can still ping google from the pfSense box.
    How do I get Arch to not use the wireless connection but only the second host only adapter.
    At the moment I use NetworkManager for the network.
    Current setup (working):
    Router –                                         192.168.1.1
    Arch bare hardware, main OS – 192.168.1.9   (wireless)
    pfSense WAN -                             192.168.1.12 ( through wireless)
    pfSense LAN  -                              10.10.2.1
    host only adapter vboxnet0 -        10.10.2.3
    I would like to add (not working):
    pfSense OPT1 -                            10.10.10.1
    host only adapter vboxnet1 -        10.10.10.3
    But this fails for unknown reasons.
    What do I miss, or should I do different, thanks in advance, Mark

    All is working well. I extended to four virtual adapters, one for the Arch host, and a wireless AP connected to eth0, bridged to pfSense. All applications on the host are finding the pfSense squid proxy, I have libproxy installed. Set the default gateway on the host to be the proxy of pfSense.
    Now I can use my laptop to connect to insecure networks while not belonging to it, and host for friends at the same time, very nice

    Good day Sidharth Namrta,
    It sounds like you are unable to make any calls, but you can recieve them, and everything else seems to work fine. I recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article to help you get that resolved, named:

    Follow the steps below to resolve this issue. Please test after each step.
    Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings > Enable Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn off airplane mode.
    Check your phone settings:
    Check your Do Not Disturb settings: Tap Settings > Do Not Disturb.
    Check for any blocked phone numbers: Tap Settings > Phone > Blocked.
    See if Call Forwarding is turned on: Tap Settings > Phone > Call Forwarding.
    Ensure that your software is up to date:
    Check for a carrier settings update.
    Check for an iOS software update.
    Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
    If the iPhone has a SIM card, reseat the SIM card.
    If the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s is on the Verizon network, dial *228 from the iPhone and select option 2 to update the Preferred Roaming List (PRL). The PRL determines the cellular towers the phone uses for cellular service, selecting those with the best signal strength.
    Reset the network settings: Tap  Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Try to make or receive calls in another location.
    Attempt to isolate to one network band:
    If you're having the issue on LTE, disable LTE, if possible, and try again.
    If you're having the issue on 3G/4G, disable 3G/4G, if possible, and try again.
    Contact the carrier to check the following:
    Your account is properly configured to use the specific iPhone that has the issue.
    There are no localized service outages.
    Your account doesn't have a billing-related block.
    Your calls don't have errors on the carrier system.
    Restore the phone as new.
    If the above steps don't resolve the issue, go to an Apple Retail Store, carrier, Apple Authorized Reseller, or contact AppleCare to send the phone in for service.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Server for Web hosting and email (only  for 3 domains)

    Hello guys,
    I want to setup mac mini server for my company which will host only 3 web sites and email server for the moment.
    What i got so far,
    01. I have Macmini server
    02. I have static ip address
    03. I have router (vigor 2700) which forward the external ip address (my ip start from 87.197.XXX.XXX) in to my Server using DMZ hosts
    (So i have 192.168.1.20 as my server ip address(local) and when i point 87.197.132.48  from out side (using web browser) i can see Mac server page)
    So can i setup the server using this infomation. Just want to make sure that i allready got everythign to setup the server.
    1st question : Do i have to all information to start this ?
    Please help me with this first, then i will have more  questions latter.
    Thanks in advance

    Migrate out of 192.168.1.0/24 (and 192.168.0.0/24) as those will cause problems for your eventual use of VPNs to connect into your network.  Most every coffee shop and home network on the planet uses those, and the IP routing inherent in a VPN doesn't appreciate finding the same subnet on both ends of the VPN.  The earlier you get your network out of those particular subnets - and preferably over to a subnet somewhere within the 172.16.0.0/12 or 10.0.0.0/8 blocks - the easier the network migration will be.
    Set up your internal DNS services and your external DNS services (I'm assuming your local DNS server will not be delegated to serve DNS publicly) and particularly establish an A record in (at least) your public DNS referencing your mail server, and then enter that mail server A record entry as the MX mail exchange host for each of the three domains, and set up three virtual domains on the mail server.
    If your gateway is sufficiently capable, you can have a separate domain or subdomain within your network, and have all your "public" names hosted externally.  You can then use example.com outside, and example.net inside, and any example.com references from the outside or from the inside will resolve to your external static IP address and (if your gateway has the ability to "reflect" traffic to the public static IP) it'll all work most easily.  If your gateway isn't capable, then you can also host the example.com domain internally in your local DNS server, but that means maintaining two parallel sets of DNS entries.  Or you can get a more capable gateway.  (I did not research your gateway.)
    You'll want to read the Apple mail service documentation around alias entries, as there are two ways to do this.  See the stuff around pages 73 and 77 in that document.  Better still, just skim that mail service administration manual; that'll get you an introduction to the whole area and some familiarity with the general terms and concepts, and that manual is fairly readable.
    Then read the TopicDesk Spam Documentation.
    If you don't have IT staff around (some of your time, as well as that of others) to dedicate to this mail server management (including user management, troubleshooting, backups, etc.) hosting mail externally can be a good trade-off.

    Hi Tarun 49,
    If you are having issues with your iPhone such as you describe, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
    First, quit all running applications and test again -
    iOS: Force an app to close
    Next, I would try restarting the iPhone -
    Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
    iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • The vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'

    Hi,
    I have the problem that when I start a VM with windows server 2012 on a hyper-v v2 host, it takes very long till the VM get bind the static or dynamic ip adress. I tried both, static and dynamic. In every case I see at the event viewer the following error:
    the vm and host networking components failed to negotiate protocol version '4.0'
    After a few minutes the VM gets bind the IP an everything works fine. But at the next time I reboot the machine the same failure appear.
    Trying to use legacy network adapter results in the same problem. After this I tried to export the vm to a hyper-v v3 host. At first boot time
    the problem didn't appear and the vm get's bind the ip adress without problems. Then after upgrading the integration services to hyper-v v3
    version the same problem appears but without register it in the event viewer.
    Does anybody know how I can fix this problem?
    Kind Regards,
    Marcus

    Hi,
    A MS KB records an issue when you run Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 based Virtual machine in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008R2:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2744129
    There is a Microsoft update in this KB, you may install this KB in your Windows Server 2008 R2 and check the result.
    While about this issue after you migrate the guest VM to Windows Server 2012 host, will it still has such error message after you remove all network adapters of the guest VM?
    Install Windows update for the Hyper-V host, after that upgrade Integration service for the guest VM again to check the result.
    For more information please refer to following MS articles:
