Squealing noise?

I have noticed on my new 2.2 SR MBP that coming from where the power plug is inserted, there is a squealing noise. The noise stops when I unplug it, but right away when I plug it back in, it picks back up. It is not a really loud noise, but when I am working at night in my office with no TV or music playing, it is very obvious and, you know, distracting.
Please let me know if anyone else experiences this.

Another poster noticed a problem with the fans coming on as soon as the power adapter was connected. The squealing might well be a fan, and I suspect that the temperature sensor might not be working for that fan. You could download the widget iStatPro from the Apple site, which will display the fans. You can then watch it as you connect the power adaptor and see if a fan starts up in conjunction with the squealing noise.
Also, you could try running the Apple Hardware Test and see if you get any error codes.
Good luck!

  • Optical drive making squealing noise

all of a sudden my optical drive is making a high pitched squealing noise. also i've been able to burn dvd+r and now it just spits them out. i've had my mac for less then two years. this is my first mac (pc user for years) i really hope its not breaking down already. any help would be great.

It does sound like a fault with the optical drive. It is the noise that bothers me. I would still try clearing the pram if you haven't as yet (hold down applealt+pr while booting up, and wait to hear the 3rd chime before releasing them) and possibly resetting the SMC (unlikely solution), but that would not account for the noise.

  • Squealing noise on my MBP!

I was surprised to hear a weird squealing noise from my MBP today! I wasnt sure if it was overheating or if the HD was acting up but then suddenly, the noise went away.
Anyone have this scary experience before?

  • Squealing noise when printer is at rest

When my HP ENVY 7645 is on but not being used it has a low repetitive squealing noise.  It goes away when the printer is used but after awhile of non-use it seems to go into another mode and begins the squealing noise again.

Nothing - absolutely nothing fixes that terrible background squealing except powering this machine off.  It sits right beside me on the desk.  I often have to leave it on because another user is sending to it.  It drives me crazy!  I've taken to playing music on my computer to drown it out but this is hard because I'm a writer and it messes with my thought processes.  Please - HP can't you do something about this.  The printer itself works great and I'm happy with it .  I've had HP products for years and this is the first one with such an annoying problem.

  • High pitched squeal noise and low end rumble RME Fireface 800 Macbook pro 2011

    Hi there,
I just updated Mac OSX Snow Leopard and my Fireface 800 has started emitting a high pitched squealing noise when turned on and connected via Firewire 800 cable.
Also my 17" Macbook pro requested a hard reset last week for the first time, after this problem began.
When my subwoofer is connected, a low end rumble is emitted at the same time as the squeal, and persists until turned off and on again.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • High pitch squealing noise

After printer sits idle for awhile there is a high pitched squealing noise.  At first you don't notice it and then it becomes so annoying as a light background noise I have to turn off the printer until I need it again.

    Hello Bernina,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
Typically when a printer makes any kind of unusual noise, it has to do with a power issue or a lack there of.
Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions, click here: click here.

  • Photosmart Premium Fax squealing noise

    Hello,
I have a new Photosmart Premium Fax C309a.  It seems that some time after a phone call the printer emits a low volume, high pitched squealing noise.  Activating the printer by pressing a button or lifting the cover make the noise immediately stop.
Has anybody else experienced this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Doug

  • Horrible Squealing Noise

I just opened up my Macbook Pro to a horrible squealing noise. It sounds something like the noise in this Youtube video (but I have a more recent model of MBP). I don't know what might have caused it. The computer has had a lot of warranty work done on it, all about four months ago, mostly related to the hard drive. However, I'm away for the holidays right now and won't be able to get it in to an Apple Store for some time. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what this noise is and what causes it, and if it is cause for worry. The sound seems to be coming from the rear left side of the computer.

    Hi,
This could be a feedback problem. Do you have a microphone attached? If so either disable it or turn the Mic volume down using the Windows sound options.
    Just a thought!

  • MSI P67A-G43(B3) squealing noises

So, I just got this mobo about 3 weeks ago and built a new system with it. Since making this system, we've been hearing a horrible off and on squealing noise from it, that we thought to be the PSU at first, then the CPU fan, then a case fan, then the video card.. etc etc, but it turns out it was none of those! It actually turns out it's the mobo making this stupid squealing noise!!
The noise happens mostly when the computer isnt doing anything, and for the most part stops when it's doing  like running a game or something that takes alotta power from it.
So the way I saw it was that the mobo has to be dying or something to be making such a crummy noise, and wanted to RMA it. However, it's 1 week past the return process for amazon now (we took too long to figure the issue out apparently), and now I cant return it there. Soooo, I went to google the issue thinking maybe there's a better solution to the noise, and found someone saying they had a squealing board (same model as mine), and fixed it via a bios update.
However, the board shows we're on bios ver 1.9, which looks like the latest official release. Then there's ones like 1.I and such, that I believe are beta releases?
So im at a bit of an impass here. Do I flash the bios to 1.I and see if it fixes the issue? or do I just get another mobo?

The most common cause of that is a PSU with too much noise on the power lines:

  • My macbook air is making a weird squealing noise when charging.

Hi, recently i have noticed that my macbook air has started to make a weird squealing noise when charging. This noise is feint, though it's clearly audible, and is quite annoying when i am using my mac for things like word processing and internet browsing. It only makes this noise when the charger is plugged in, and not when it is running off battery power. Whats also worth noting is that whenever i scroll up or down a page in safari, or chome, the noise changes slightly. Again this only happens when the mba is plugged in.

hi, right now i am using my macbook air off the battery, and everything seems to be running ok. unfortunantly this is my first mac, so i dont have any other chargers lying around that i could test it with. However i shall definately see about taking it to the genius bar. its a bit of a pain, seeing as it's only been ten days since i purchased the **** thing.

  • Squeal noise with photo booth video recording.

I use my iSight and Photo booth to record video for YouTube. Every time I get finished recording and go to play the video back, there is a hum/squeal/high pitched noise along with the audio.
    Anyone know what's up??

    Hello Tony.
Does recording with iMovie and plenty of light give you the same noises you hear when you record using Photo Booth? If so, this thread may give you some help: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1944573
The original poster of this thread says that recording video in bright light eliminates his noise. Apple are aware of that issue, and your problem may be another symptom of the same problem. However, this explanation does not fix your problem. It only lets you know that you are not alone. Here follow some suggestions that may help you correct your problem if the problem is common to both your iMovie and your Photo Booth.
If you recently bought your MacBook, take it back to your retailer and see if he can correct the problem or give you a replacement MacBook that does not have the same problem. As pointed out in the thread I linked above, user obsidianspider was able to trade his new, noisy, MacBook for one with an acceptably low noise level by immediately bringing his specific problem to the attention of the manager of his Apple retailer. For specifics, see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5761948#5761948
If you cannot fix your Photo Booth problem, and if iMovie does not share the same problem, using iMovie would seem to be the simplest solution. However, if you specifically want video effects in the videos you make for YouTube and you cannot get Photo Booth fixed, try a demo of http://www.tweakersoft.com/webcamtweaker.html to see whether it will work for you.

  • Regza 40" LCD TV emits high frequency noise

A few months ago I was lucky to win this television, a 106 cm Regza HD LCD.
I was very pleased because I could never have afforded it myself, and I am very happy with its performance generally.
What I find however is that it emits a high frequency noise that triggers tinitus to my hearing. (Tinitus is a high pitched squealing noise heard by people who have damaged their ears, sometimes called ringing in the ears).
I guess my hearing is already sensitive through listening to lots of live music over the years, but I think that this noise is excessive.
I figure that a monitor this size is using a fair amount of power and that maybe the power supply could be overworking itself.
The monitor emits this noise at a consistent level even before the sound from the tv show begins.
I am interested to find out what suggestion forum users may have for reducing this background noise?
The monitor is still under warranty as it is only 6 months old.
I wanted to be prepared to discuss it with Toshiba warranty people if forum users can suggest first of all what could be causing the noise, and secondly, possible ways of addressing the issue.
    Thanks petekey4

    Hello Pete
As you can see this is Toshiba computer forum and I don't believe you will find many people here who want to discuss about Toshiba LCD TV.
Anyway, if the TV is new and with valid warranty the best option for you is to contact service people and let them check your new TV.

  • Noise through Speakers when using Firewire 400 port.

Can anyone explain to me why my G4 Powerbook would make squealing noises when I have anything plugged into the Firewire 400 port? It is driving my crazy!!

I'm afraid I can't help, except to say I have the same problem with my FW 400 and 800 ports when I connect a Firewire hard drive. The noise sounds like it's coming from inside the computer itself and it happens even with the audio muted. I wonder if this problem might be related to the Firewire "noise" / "chirp" issue I've seen discussed?

  • My macbook pro has fallen and making noise

A day before yesterday, my MacBook pro has fallen into the ground.  Now it become noisy.  Any advice on how to solve this problem is appreciated.

Since you have no Apple store to help you we'll have to see if we can solve your problem remotely.
What is your ex at model, size and year?
What is the noise like? Is it a fluttering,  buzzing noise or a squealing noise? Is it constant or occasional? Do you have access to small screwdrivers or know someone who has some?
    > my MacBook pro has fallen into the ground<
So clearly something inside has gotten displaced or damaged. So depending on the model, the bottom of the case will have to come off. Then you'll have to run the MBP to determine which component is making the noise. Someone who knows what they are doing will have to be the one to do this, otherwise damage to the MBP can occur. If there is no one, just be careful and don't touch anything.
    > because the system does not recognise mine.<
Did this happen after you upgraded to Yosemite?
    >customers outside USA.<
I would think that it would be difficult for any company to provide world wide service to products they make. As an example I tried to help a friend living in Uruguay. I sent him camera parts from the US three times and each time the shipment never made it to him.
