Stabilizing footage in motion?

Hey guys,
I'm somewhat new to motion, but I'm sure this is a common effect. I have a shot that pans and tilts down, but its a pretty bad pan. I'm trying to stabilize the shot. i know it can be done, but am not totally sure how. I have applied the Stabilizing motion behavior, but it seems to just crop the **** out of the shot. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this effectively, or any good links to tutorials that cover image stabilization??? Thanks so much all!

Does Smoothcam in Motion work the same way as in FCP, meaning does it analyze the ENTIRE clip that I capture in FCP, rather than just the IN/OUT points of the particular shot I export to Motion?
Yes

The way to avoid this is to log your footage before injesting. Make note of the shots that require stabilization and capture those shots separate from the rest of your footage. That way the source footage isn't 30 minutes long, but rather 30 seconds.

  • Importing and stabilizing footage from Pre Pro CC to AE cc.

Greetings to all you aftereffects and premiere Pro cc experts.  I have a question that is probably very easy to answer, but for the life of me I can't figure it out.  I have some footage that was poorly shot that was given to me that runs about 60 minutes in length.  I need to stabilize about three minutes of that footage in the middle.  How do I go about getting just that three minutes into aftereffects to stabilize it?  Do I need to cut the footage and then render out just those three minutes?  When I try to import it now into aftereffects and apply the stabilization feature it tries to analyze the entire 60 minutes.  Also, any help that you can offer on the best way to stabilize footage in general would be appreciated.

While Sz is correct, I usually find it best to restrict stabilization to a specific clip instead of relying on Premiere's interactivity with AE.
    So.
Yes, trim the small section and make that three minutes a completely separate and self-contained movie.
STabilizing is a complicated art these days because there are so many options. I like Warp Stabilizer but the process may take several attempts for you to get what you want. Stabilized footage requires rotation and horizontal and vertical movement. How well and thoroughly these characteristics are processed are user adjustable although the results are not always predictable. Stabilization will lead to scaling the media to fill the screen and the smoothness of the changes is totally adjustable, too.

  • Stabilizing footage then tracking for 3D compositing

Hi. I am working on a project where I want to stabilize 4K red footage and then crop in on this footage reframing the shots. Then tracking this cropped footage in a seperate program and compositing 3D models into the footage. Is this the right way to do this?
Problems I am having... Tracking software not creating clean track of stabilised cropped footage. But because the footage is 4K red I do not want to track and comp in 3D models before stabilizing. Because render times on 3D would be to big to output at 4k.
Am I missing something here... Should me work flow be different?
    Thanks for any help.
Also does the warp stabilizer actually warp the footage? Could this be affecting my tracking?

Also does the warp stabilizer actually warp the footage? Could this be affecting my tracking?
    Yes and yes.
Is this the right way to do this?
No, it isn't. By warping and cropping the footage you make the 3D tracking think it would be operating on a different lens with variable zoom, resulting in a completely whacked out camera solve. Hence your problems. For what you have in mind, Warp Stabilizer is the wrong tool to begin with. If any stabilization is required, you do it based on the solved 3D camera which can be anything from smoothing the track in the matchmoving software to doing the same in AE after your 3D stuff  has been rendered. And nobody asks you to render at 4k. As long as the proportions and aspect ratio are retained, you can do your 3D renders at any res or scale the scene to fit.

  • Exporting FCP footage to Motion

The replies helped out a lot before, so I'll try it again. If I make speed adjustments or add freeze frames to video footage in FCP, then export it to motion. The footage opens in motion w/ incorrect footage than I sent. The freeze frame wasn't frozen, and was from completely different video than what the freeze frame was. Is it not wise to send effects made in FCP into Motion?
    any advice would be great

Michael - if you do a search here (speed change, under the hood, scrub filter, FCP) you'll find this has been discussed quite a bit and some pretty good solutions can be found, including a link to an excellent article by Mark Spencer on the Ken Stone site...
    Search is your friend...

  • Stupid Question - How do you flip an image or footage in Motion?

I've been searching for the last 10mins but can't find any info on how to do this. I'd just like to flip an image horizontally - where is the flip command?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

Or twirl open the Rotation parameter and adjust the Y rotation by 180 degrees.

PS: If you're going for upside down, then substitute the X rotation.

  • Stabilizing Footage Question: What Type of Layer?

Hello, I'd like to do a bit of stabilization on a clip.
I seem to be stumbling a bit on creating a new layer to do my tracking upon.   Other than that I seem to have a solid grip on what is required.
What kind of new layer should I create to assist me in this process?  A new adjustment layer?
    Thanks!

    Here is a screen shot:

Here is a tutorial of mine showing how to stabilize using the Mocha tracker (which I would more recommend than using AE's build in tracker)
There is also a German Version of the tutorial (deutsches Tutorial)

  • Very choppy footage when trying to edit a clip in motion 5

Hi there, I have just recently got Motion 5 and have wanted to use it to add some tracking points to some of my footage to add some effects.  However my problem is that even importing footage into motion of a very simple 10 second camera pan shot, I can't even play it back with out it stopping a bunch and skipping frames and essentially sputtering to try and play the clip.  However the exact same clip I can pull into FCPX and edit it no problems completely smooth with no issue, even after color correction and added audio ect.  I can't figure out why it does this but Motion does this to me a lot.  Any ideas?  It's very frustrating, but if I could fix this problem I could continue experimenting with visual effects to see what motion can do for me.  Any ideas?  Thanks!

What codec is the clip? FCPX is designed to play well with some compressed codecs that Motion will struggle with. Depending on your system, if you are working with H.264, it may cause  Motion to play back at reduced frame rates and/or inconsistently; it will work better if you first convert it to some flavor of Pro Res.
Otherwise, consider adjusting the resolution and quality in the Render drop down menu. You could also do a RAM preview for real time playback, although you'll have to render each time you make a change.
FWIW, I'd transcode and adjust resolution if necessary.
    Good luck.

  • How to motion track footage onto other footage

not sure if my title is worded right but I have footage of a bus driving by with an advertisement on the side.. I want to take some footage I have of myself and put it on the bus advertisement in the other footage using motion tracking.

Any normal corner pin tutorial will explain it and in fact one of the basic tutorials for mocha AE covers tracking a poster onto a London city bus...

  • Motion tile a video with an alpha channel

    Hi!
I'm trying to use the motion tile effect to fill transparent edges that are the result of stabilization with the prodad mercalli plugin. The problem is however that because the stabilization hasn't been done using keyframe movement in AE, it sees the transparent edges as part of the frame and applies the motion tile so that the transparent areas stay intact. In other words the motion tile effect doesn't see that the image is moving around because only the alpha channel is changing.
Is there any smart ways to solve this problem in AE so that I can apply the motion tile effect to get rid of the alpha transparency around the edges of the stabilized footage?
    Any help will be appreciated!

Hi and thank you for helping out!
Unfortunately I didn't get this to work with shift channels. I'm not sure what you meant by separating the components? I put shift channels on the videoclip and told it to use alpha from the video of the alpha.
Actually I'm a bit confused on why shift channels should help. The way I see it, the problem is that the "motion tile" effect is seeing the "whole" pixel dimension of the video that also includes the alpha channel and is applying itself to the whole frame instead of just the opaque area (the actual stabilized  video). Because of that the motion tile effect is tiling the whole frame, including the alpha of it which leaves transparent gaps between the two tiles.
Maybe there was a miscommunication between us or should I just try the shift channels effect again? If that's the case, then could you explain what you mean by separating components?
    Thank you very much!

  • Reverse Motion tracking

I'm working on a project with some green screened footage and some of it was shot hand held but i want it to be still. I was wondering if it's possible to do a sort of reverse motion track, where i can analyze the motion and the make it stationary.
Does anyone know if this is possible in Motion 4?
    Much thanks.

That's just stabilization. It's in the manual look for STABILIZE WORKFLOW.
Keying stabilized footage can get weird because of the sometimes quite dramatic changes in position and rotation that take place during the output/rendering of the stabilized clip.

  • CS5 stabilized R3D's are blurry/unusable. Help!

I've been researching this problem and trying everything I can think of for two days with no results. The issue is that R3D clips that are stabilized in AE CS5 export out as too blurry to use. And no I don't have motion blur turned on.
My workflow is to stabilze the R3D clip using the built in stabilizer and then to export it out using uncompressed settings whether quicktime or AVI or even Cineform. I place those clips on the Premiere timeline and they look terrible.
This is a real problem at this point because I have masses of aerial footage to stabilize and I have to find an answer. Although I'm going to now try Mocha, it does not accept native R3D files or Cineform so I end up having to encode to intermediate codec.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

I am surprized that no one gave you a correct answer.
In order to get good results from stabilization routines regardless of the software you are using is to shoot at a high enough shutter speed. The shutter speed depends on the lens you use. As a minimum shutter speed should be for times the focal length of the lens you shoot with. For example: if you are shooting with a 28 millimeters lens your shutter speed should have been at least 1/125 of a second. This of course depends on how much motion was in the original footage.
The frame rate has no relation to the ability to stabilize the footage. Only the shutter speed is what matters. The reason why footage looks blurry to you now is that after you stabilized it a motion blur caused by camera motion and and possibly the vibration of a helicopter is now visible and not masked by the movements of the image. When shooting from a helicopter I would recommend using as high of the shutter speed as possible as high as 1/1000 of a second or even higher. This of course will lead to rather stroby looking footage. You will have to either live with it or use a plug-in like Kronos motion blur or time warp without applying retiming but using a motion blur option with a 180° setting.
Another reason for you footage to look blurry now is that it is often necessary for the stabilization software to zoom in on crop the picture. This is by design. There is nothing you can do about it. The only way to workaround it is to reduce the amount of the motion stabilization applied to the picture. You would need to find a balance between stabilities and and the image sharpness. Also, there is a setting in a Premiere Pro CS5 for the resolution of the footage display. If you are setting is lower than the full resolution for either playback or paused footage, the picture can look significantly blurrier than it really is. This is done to ensure smooth playback, sometimes smoothness of a playback is more important than the sharpness of the image for the editing purposes.
    Hope this helps, cheers.

  • Motion Stops Analyzing Movement!?

    Hi,
I have motion and I am trying to stabilize a speech. When I apply the stabilize filter, I set the Position, Scale and Rotation on and on border, I use the Zoom. It only analyzing 10 seconds out of nearly a minute and no mater what I do, it won't analyze all the footage.
I don't have keyframes set up and the only solution I have found is to go the end of the stabilized footage, copy, paste it and then drag it out, to continue the clip from where the stabilization left off, and then add the stabilization filter to the new clip. I'v had to cut up the same clip up to 3X, set a stabilization filter to each part of the clip, just to fully stabilize it.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
    Zevie

I believe this happens when the analysis can't figure out the sampled pixels' movement. It will usually, by default, retry, but in some cases, just can't figure it out. You can set the tolerance of this in the Anchor and Rotation drop-down menus (ie: Fail Tolerance / Fail Behavior) and also tweak the Look Ahead setting slider bar.
Sounds like you figured it out, but this has been my experience when trying to match/mimic motion video.

  • Text effect where it has a pointer that motion tracks on the subject and anchors to the text?

I've tried many different search terms and had very little luck. I found one video where they use the beam but I think he was using a different version of after effects and I couldn't complete certain steps. I'm using after effects 2014 cc. Thanks!

Depending on the shot you could run AE's camera tracker and add the text so that it was locked to the camera move then track the object you wanted to add the pointer to and attach the start position of the beam effect to the text position and the other end to a null that had the tracker info.
If the camera tracker does not work out then you could stabilize the shot so that some object on the background didn't move then duplicate the stabilized shot, pre-compose the duplicate, then track the object in the shot you want to track. You would then apply that tracking data to a null, copy the null and paste it to the first comp. Then you would add your text layer to the stabilized shot and then add a solid with the beam effect. You would then attach one end of the beam to the null's position and the other end of the beam to the text. You end up with a stabilized shot the null that controls one end of the beam and the text layer stuck to the now not moving background. You add another null to the project and then tie the position of this new, let's call it destabilize, to the anchor point of your stabilized footage, use the keyframe assistant to convert the expression that ties the start end of the beam to the null to keyframes, then parent all layers to the null to put back the camera movement and track the other layers to the camera movement.
Got that? It's kind of confusing. The right technique depends entirely on the shot. If you can put the shot up on YouTube or Vimeo so we can see what you are trying to work with maybe we can give you a better idea.
Here's how to stabilize a shot, add some graphics, and then remove the stabilization using a null and simple expression.
I'm working on a more in-depth tutorial on this subject but it probably won't be up for a few days. In the mean time here's an animation preset that will work with this technique if you stabilize including stabilizing scale and rotation.
Here's another quick tutorial on how to use the camera tracker to add some text to a scene:

  • Can I use Motion 5 without Final Cut Pro but maybe for iMovie?

Hi guys, if I buy Motion 5 can I use it to create a project without Final Cut Pro or X or what ever?! And can I create transitions for iMovie?
    Thanks

Stelo08, yes, Motion will export in a handful of formats.
h264 is the most popular, but did not support transparency, which you would likely want if you wanted to do lower thirds (titles).
Motion will export in prores 444 which which supports transparency, but I do not know if it works in imovie.
(I tried it in Camtasia 2.3 and it did not there, but it seemed to work in ScreenFlow 4.03)
Additionally, you can import video footage into Motion, so worst case scenario, you could pull a shorter scene into motion, do your overlays, export that scene and then add it back into imovie.

  • Motion not working correctly

Something seems to be wrong with my Motion Start up. When I first start up it gives me the projects window where you specify what format you are working in. I'm working in HDV i60. So I choose that and then move forward, but nothing opens. So I go to the top bar and File>new project, and choose it again, then the project opens, however the library window and browser won't show up, and click there icons on the upper right as well as in the tool bar as well as the commands which i believe is command 1,2,3. So I try working without it, and import footage, now motion won't let me apply any behaviors to the footage.
    Whats's going on

    mentioned alot before but...
try trashing the preference file called com.apple.motion.plist its found in (Your account)>Library>Preferences. then empty your trash.
