Switching audio in multicam editing

I need to switch to the audio on a second camera while doing multicam editing. I can't seem to get the audio off of the fixed camera. Any ideas?

With the Multicam Viewer open (CMD-SHIFT-7), you will see 3 icons in the top left of the viewer pane.
Select the third icon to edit audio only.
That said, if you are trying to delete a portion of the audio track, you can only do this in the Angle Viewer. Double click the multicam clip in the Event Browser. It will open up a new timeline with angles for each camera with audio attached, or individual audio clips. You should be able to mute selections of audio in the master clip with the range tool.
Does that answer your question?

  • Multicam Edit with Audio from 2 Cam

I'm editing a multicam project with 5 cameras.  I want to use the audio from 2 cameras.  What is the best way to do this?
Right now I have the main audio all the way down and I dragged just the audio from the 2 cams I needed onto the timeline.  They aren't part of the angle viewer.  Is there another way.?  I had to manually sync it.  Hope that makes sense.

In a multicam you can choose to switch audio and video, only audio or only video, so you can just use the 5 angles corresponding to the 5 cameras, and work with that.
It is perfectly easy to do in Angle Viewer. Just click the appropriate button at the top of the Angle Viewer.
In the picture above the "video only" button (blue) is selected; in this situation, if you click to cut to a different angle you'll cut and switch only the video, and keep the same angle for audio. You can click the audio/video or the audio only whenever you need, and it will act accordingly. Very easy, very effective.

  • How to sync audio to existing multicam edit?

Hi, I have done a multicam edit of my wedding from 4 different angles. SInce there was a lot of background noise, I have cleaned the audio track from one of the clips on an external program and imported it to FCPX.
What's the best way now to sync that audio to the existing edit? I only see options to sync clips in the event browser but that won't affect the timeline edit.
    Your help if appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Tom,
Do you know the best way to set markers when using multi cam clips? Is it better to set the marker to one of the clips before creating the multi cam clip, or set them to the actual multi cam clip?
    Thank you!

  • Multicam editing without timecode and audio?

    Hello!
I am editing a multi-cam interview with the unfortunate issue of 1. having no audio recorded from the secondary camera, and 2. the camera operators did not sync timecode or set the right time/date (DSLRs) and appear to have started/stopped rolling at different times, breaking up the interview into short clips...so I've been trying to figure out, what is the best way to go about this??  Is it possible to use the multi-cam edit without audio, and if so how do I get around it being broken into small clips that don't quite match?
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi caleb116,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The multicam editing feature in FCPX will help you work around these obstacles.  The link below explains the multicam editing workflow:

Having the date, time and time zone set on your recording devices before the shoot is helpful for FCPX to create multicam clips automatically.  Normally, you can sync automatically using the audio in your clips.   However, since you don’t have that option in this case, you can just sync from the start of each clip and then enter the multicam editor and manually line up the angles.

  • Multicam editing with multi-track audio?

Does anyone know how to do multicam editing with multi-track audio?  Apparently, the multicam editor can only see Audio Track #1 in the Source Sequence.  I tried mixing my original audio tracks #1, #2, and #3 (submixes) to the master audio track in the Source Sequence and if I listen to the new Multicam Sequence (the nested Source Sequence) all 3 original audio tracks are there (combined), but when I go to do the multicam edit in the multicam monitor window, I"m back to just Audio Track #1 of the Source Sequence and audio tracks #2 and #3 are missing ???  Thanks for your help!

I have run the gambit of different techniques. The one that is most efficient is listed in Colin Brougham's response number 9
There's a far easier way to do this: after you sync your angles, hold down Alt/Opt and select or lasso just the video portions of the clips, and nest those. The audio stays put, but the video moves into the nest, and you can then enable Multicam on the nested sequence.
One of the best things about this is that it circumvents Premiere Pro's totally BS "Render Required Files" nonsense.
I must admit the ALT lasso tip was one of the best features I have seen. Like a revelation when I discovered it some months ago while watching a tutorial about something not related. As far as the "Rendering required files" That was kicking my but for a while doing multicam editing. If you do edit both audio and video in multicam you might find the "Rendering required files" issue. Basically the problem stems from having a lot of cuts to process at the same time both audio and video. 1080P is a huge amount of data when you multiply it by four cameras plus multiple audio cuts and effects ,(audio gain, Deessing etc.) So Pre-rendering the audio by clicking in the main sync timeline and then at the top Click Sequence/Render Audio. This takes care of the issue when you are cutting multiple tracks at once. It is a good practice to work from a main sync sequence and then copy that to a new sequence  preserving the main sequence as unchanged. I found the solution is to "render audio" only in the master sync sequence this will then pass through to all subsequent copies that are made "downstream" allowing you to easily clean up anything. If you make a mistake you can always start from the main sync sequence and not lose too much time. Takes a little bit of time to render but once that is done you can cut all tracks video and audio like butter. I have been doing a lot of 1080p multicam editing over this past year and had quite learning curve. Most of the work I do is multicam editing by choice it is much faster for me to edit this way because I am used to working in live events where we need to look at all shots at the same time make a "best choice" and keep rolling. Have fun with it!

  • Multicam edit from nested sequence -- no audio?

Can someone please help me explain why I can change the video tracks as if they are multicam in my nested sequence, but I can't change the audio?
I created a sequence called "sync" which basically is all of my cameras, each on their own individual tracks, sync'd with each other, as they turned on and off throughout the shoot.
I cut this 'sync' sequence into my main timeline 'master', and then enabled multicam. I can now beautifully cut between cameras using the 'multicam' window and clicking on the preview of the shot I want as it plays. I've made my visual edit, but now I want to go back and choose my audio tracks, which it seems I can't do...
Furthermore, it seems that my nested sequence, which has video cut into V1 and audio cut into Stereo track A1, is only playing stereo track A2 from 'sync' when it's played on 'master'. It seems to be somewhat dependent on the tracks I have enabled on 'sync', but not entirely:
    1) If all audio tracks are enabled on 'sync', only A2 will play from A1 on 'master'
    2) If all audio tracks except for A2 are enabled on 'sync', no audio will play on 'master'
    3) If only A2 is enabled on 'sync', only A2 will play from 'master'.
Is there any documentation about this behavior? Is it a bug? Is there any way to select a different audio track from 'sync' from the multicam edit window?
    Thanks in advance!

    OK, maybe I should clarify...
Only A2 is coming through, NOT A1 -- so that's inconsistent with what you're saying. I have not checked Audio Follows Video, because that's not the bahvior I want. I'd like to be able to choose from any of the video tracks. Is that not possible in Premiere Pro?
Also, do you think it makes a difference that I'm 'multicam editing' from a regular sequence (with multicam enabled) as opposed to an actual multicam sequence?
    thanks for the help.

  • Two camera multicamera editing

To old pros, this may be old hat - if so my apologies for posting - but to me it is a revolution - and of possible help to some.
To foresee unwanted panning or zooming (to create a new shot) use this method (assuming you have already syncronized video and audio on tracks 1 and 2): 1) select all - both video and audio tracks, 2) move everything two and a half secs. down the timelines, 3) lock audio tracks, 4) copy all, 5) lock both video tracks, 6) paste at 00:00:00:00. You should now have four video tracks. When this sequence is dragged into a new multi editing sequence and enabled in the normal way, the video in the top two windows will play 2-2.5 secs. ahead of real time thus giving you amble time to select the alternative window. Has saved me hours and hours not having to go back to reselect. I call it multicam editing the Danish way - with a smile.
    Sigurd

Wow, that was confusing watching those videos. There's a couple ways to quickly set up and run a multicam switch in PPro CC 2014 but here's how I do it:
    1) Sync up your clips. Align them how you want either using plural eyes or just do your own visual/audio sync (premiere has it's own audio sync which you can google how it works but I've found it not 100% accurate)
    2) Hold down ALT and select only the video clips you want to cut between.
    3) Right click on those highlighted clips and select NEST
    4) That creates one nested clip on video track 1. (Because of the way I do this it still leaves the audio visible from all the cameras/sources below so they can be accessed right on that timeline.) Now right-click on that nested video track and select MULTICAM>Enable.
    5) Now go to the PROGRAM window/panel and hit the + button on the bottom right. You'll see one icon that looks like windows, drag that out to the project panel so it stays visible always.
    6) Click on that little window icon (if you hover over it, it should say multicam window or something like that). Now you'll see all the cameras at once and also another window that shows what camera is "live". It's ALL in the Program window now ever since the last few versions of Premiere.
    7) Basically just hit play and start clicking on those little camera windows in that program monitor/panel as the video plays and it will record all your cuts. When you hit stop or pause, you'll then see all those cuts populate your video track. Done super easy.
    8) To change a cut after you've stopped the playback you can bring the play head over the clip you want changed and then just click on the camera window that you want to change it to. Also, using the "n" or nudge tool helps you drag the cut or edit points forward or back in time.
    Hope that helps! Enjoy!

  • Multicam Editing reloaded

    Hi!
I do understand and have used grouping multiple clips into a multiclip to use the multiclip editing feature of FCP or in my first life Avid.
You sync up a bunch of camera angle by timecode or inpoints. If all the cameras rolled all the way trough the event and the clip from each cameratape is roughly the same lenght its a breeze and fun to edit a concert or live event. So far so good.
A few weeks back someone dumped a heap of tapes onto my desk. Live footage from five 1,5h gigs with up to 12 cameras. My obvious choice was using multiclips until I found out how fragmented all the cameraclips were. Apart from having to change tapes in the middle of the gig, the cameramen switched on and off all the time, so syncing with multiclip is not an option.
I spent two days hand-syncing all the camera-angles and all the little snippets of switching cameras to the soundtrack and now I have a sequence with 12 videotracks (1 per camera-angle) on top of each other, all synched to the audio with blacks, where the respective cameras were not running.
Now here comes my question: Is there a way to turn this sequence into a multiclip for using the built in multiclip feature of FCP? Hand-editing between 12 cameras for five 1,5 hour gigs of norwegian death metal with 3 seconds long cuts will be a nightmare without multicam editing.
Exporting all the camera-tracks and reimporting and multiclipping is not an option, because I don't have enough discspace and loose the ability to batch-capture.
    thanx for any help
    Florian

I will add that a 12 camera gig isn't much different from a 3 camera gig. You can look back a few weeks and see four or more similar threads involving broken streams from many cameras. There are at least two ways to fix that, nest sequences or build self-contained movies that have slugs between the camera footage to replace the stops and restarts.
did you mention the cutting pace? MTV-style 60 cuts a second or more lyrical? I'd start with figuring out who is the best photographer in the lot, assume you're using his/her stuff for most of the prime coverage.

  • Multicam Editing Not Working

I'm using Final Cut Pro v10.1.3 and I can't get multicam editing to work.  I've got three angles in my multicam clip and they are all synced properly.  However when I open up the angle viewer and try to edit the clip, I can't.  I see all three angles, but I don't see the icons in the top left that should allow me to edit audio only, video only or both.  And when I try to switch between the camera angles, I can't.  I'm only being show one angle and can't switch to any other.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

  • Multicam Edit Really Slow

I am editing DV PAL and have just noticed that there is bug which is delaying my keyboard commands to switch to different cameras in the multicamera window.
Firstly after lining up my two cameras, I exported the audio alone to a wav format so I could mix it from both cameras right. Then imported it back into my project and overlayed the audio in track one of the layered sequence. I muted the audio from both cameras in track 2 and 3. Created another sequence and dragged my layered sequence for multicam edit. Apparently when I start playing with the yellow borders around camera 1, it plays fine but when I change to camera 2 it is just instant and the border now changes to red. If I press 1 for camera 1 it responds after 2 - 3 seconds and carries on like that. At times it appears as if its no longer playing in real time. All the colour correction in the layered sequence have been disabled.  I have stopped the editing because I would like to sync some of the sections with music beats in the scene to make it more interesting.
Am I missing something, here or its my sytem or the footage that is just too slow for the editing process? Other than that I might have to push on like that and review the edit once the multicam window is closed. This method will not produce the results I am after. I have done it before and it use to work only slowing down when its coming to the end of at least 50 minutes multicam sequence and this one is just 40 minutes.
All the video files are located on RAID 1.
My system configuration is as follows
    APP CS4
    HP XW6600
    Quad Xeon 5420 2.5Ghz
    Vista Business 64bit
    Nvidia Quadro FX4600 GPU
    8GB RAM
    RAID 1 esata
    250 GB C drive HDD
    750 GB D drive
    22" HD monitor.
I have attached a pdf which showed my system perfomance at the time of the multicam edit.

One big bottleneck for the system is the way PPro deals with the audio. For a test, try disabling all the audio.  you should see a big performance increase.  The trick now is to keep PPro from working too hard on the sound.
Try this - Instead of placing your mixed audio track on track 1 in the source timeline, place it in track 2 of the timeline you actually use for the multicamera editing.  Then delete anything in track 1 in this timeline.  You can link the video and track 2, but pay attention when you remove material that you are cutting audio 2 as well, to keep everything in sync.
It may still not be perfect, but it should help.  You can also disable any color-correction on the tracks until you are finished cutting, as this is a system drag in multicam.
Multicam is overall a bit of a mess in CS4.  The delay you see is no fun.  You will notice, however, that the actual cut will be at the right moment.

  • Multicam edit - 2 cameras

Hi, I have footage from 2 cameras that have the same timecode, about 200 clips from each camera. Is there any way to select footage from the first camera as angle 1 and from the second as angle 2 and make my edits in multicamera edit window? This would save me hours... Thanks

Not to say that I haven't seen the problems others are having, but they've not been problems, it's been a super easy process, not time consuming at all. I've done 2 camera shoots to 9 camera shoots, I've saved time on all of them by using multiclip.
Implies your experience and ability to comprehend the manual and to follow the incremental steps is superior to most.
I've used mutlicam for many projects, too, but I still find the setup to be clumsy and subtle with too many possible ways to mess it up. I find I go back to the manual every time to make sure each of the buttons is pushed, all of the activators are on, all displays re set properly. I load the multicam editing layout and button bars. But I still find myself going back to the manual to figure out what the blue lines mean, where to set the source audio, the differences between cuts and switches, and the best way to open up the sequence again to make frame by frame changes.
    Synchronized multiple source editing should be easier. The paradigm is ancient, many NLEs or plugins have been doing it for a long time so all the mistakes have been made. It's time for improvements and I see some coming in FCP7 although I won't have it installed for a few more months. I'm hoping Apple got it right this time;

  • Multicam editing: Can't get blade to show in angle viewer when trying to edit in Timeline

This problem just appeared. I have done lots of multicam editing in FCPX, it works great.
But, today I started on a new video and:
    - I created the first multicam clip, it looks fine.
    - I created a Project and appended the multicam clip into the Project, it looks fine.
    - I see all the Angles in the Angle Viewer, it looks normal.
    - I select the Event Browser and hit play, all angles play. I move the curser over an angle and I see a hand, just as I should. everything fine so far.
    - I click in the Timeline and hit the space bar and the selected angle and audio start to play..........BUT the angles in the angle viewer do NOT play. Not right.
    - With the Timeline still selected, I move the curser over an angle in the angle viewer, and i see the hand, NOT the Blade.
So, FCPX thinks I am still in the Event Browser, even though when I click in the Timeline, the Timeline background color changes to light grey, which says I am in the Timeline. FCPX is not letting me go into the Timeline (even though the background color changes).
I have to be doing something dumb, but I don't see it.
    Any suggestions?

Turns out that was EXACTLY the problem --- I kept looking around and finally discovered the problem was that I was NOT in a project (although I thought I was).
    Nevertheless, thank you for responding.

  • Multicam Edit/Can't See Video on Canvas

I'm doing a six-cam multicam edit. Everything was going perfect until my hand accidentally hit the keyboard. I don't know which key(s) I hit.
Not I can't see my video on the Canvas and my multiclips clips won't play in synch in the Viewer. I do hear the audio when I play the Timeline.
I opened another clip and it won't play. Nothing will play in the Canvas.
What the heck did I hit and how do I fix it? I'm working on a MacBook. All my video is on an external G Drive connected with a FireWire 800 cable.

Thank you. I can't believe that. After so many projects I didn't even know that could happen.
What a relief. I'm an hour into this 90 minute musical. I was dreading having to start again.
    Again... thanks.

  • CS6 Multicam Edit - Is there a way to turn off some camera angles when the system gets strained?

I'm doing a multicam edit in cs6 and the 5 camera angles I have are straining my system.  I have two main angles and three kind of back up go pro angles that I don't need most of the time.  But I don't want to get rid of them either.  Is there a way to turn off monitoring some of the angles at times so that video will playback smoother?  Then when I need the other angles, switch them back on when I want?  The video is so choppy with all 5 angles monitoring at once that multicam editing is basically impossible.  I'm editing on what's supposed to be a very fast system at work but it's not fast enough...Thanks!

I'm not aware of any way to do this. You might want to invest in a battery case if this is a problem for you; our users here all have them.
Please submit your feature request to Apple at this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback; I agree it's a good idea.

  • How to extend clips after multicam editing.

I recently learned how to use multicam editing and I think it is such a fantastic tool. One of the things that I struggled with, however, is the ability to extend/shorten one of the clips because the footage was too shaky during the transition to another clip.
For example: Clip A is playing and recording on the timeline. But Clip A becomes shaky so I switch to Clip B. After everything is done, and I play it back, I see that shaky footage towards the end of Clip A.
How do I extend Clip B so that it extends over Clip A to get rid of the shaky footage?

The "Roll" tool. Click between 2 clips and roll the edit left or right.
