Table of contents - Troubleshooting Defining Levels

I am trying to crate a TOC, with 2 levels of information. The 1st level is the Chapter Heading (no page number), followed by the contents under each chapter heading (with page number). The sequence works fine for all left-facing pages, but not for right facing pages. Indesign changes the hierarchy of information and ignores that the 1st level of information should go first, for example the contents for 'Chapter 1' will come before the 'Chapter 1' heading. I have tried various things, and still can't work it out. I find it strange that this applies only to information on right-facing pages. Can anyone help? Thanks

It might have to do with how InDesign looks for things to include. Frame positions are critical as ID starts in the upper left corner of the page and looks downward before looking to the right, and looks for the upper left corner of the frames, so a small frame aligned to the right margin at the top of the page will be picked up after any frame touching the left margin.
You may need to adjust frame widths and and text insets.

    Newly generated TOC looks great, except for a gap in the middle as shown below.  I would guess this comes either from bad code in the TOC, or from incorrect coding in the text - somewhere I've told it to add several line breaks.  But I can't find any such wrong information, so maybe I'm on wrong path?
    How to get ch. 5 to join ch. 4?  Backspacing doesn't work. I can force the gap shut using "up-kerning" (?) - but I bet that's dangerous in an automatically generated doc.
    thx
    YC

    Yeah, I thought there might be blank paras there too, but I'm not seeing any.  See full image below.
    I tried making some text end of ch 4 also into b-level heads, so they'd show in the TOC, and it seems clear the problem lies between the final text of ch 4 and start of ch 5.  Except there's nothing there - see below.  Appearing above the title of ch 5 is a mark for space, from the layer underneath the actual ch. 5.  I thought that might be the problem, except that's the same layout used by all other chap openers, and the problem is only in ch 4 / 5.
    There's no hidden footnote at the end of ch 4 - #38 is the last one.  No hidden page.  No hidden text.   In the TOC, each page number has one para return after it - no extras, at p. 52.  No extra spacing in the auto-number field (that is, no extra space around the actual page number - Word sometimes cranks about that if junk creeps into the header).  I'm stumped.  I've seen similar behavior in Word from time to time - where the TOC misbehaves for no reason anyone could find.  Sometimes it would auto-fix, sometimes not.  Wonder if that's the case here...

  • Financial Reporting Books Table of Content

    Hi,
    i've created a financial reporting book and i want to/have to insert a title page (pdf file). The table of content is always created in front of this title page. I tried to modify xml statements in the book file but there isn't a setting which defines the order of Table of Content and the other included book files. Does anyone know if there is a command to do that. Or is there somewhere some kind of style sheet where the table of content is defined?
    At least i would like to insert a Logo into the table of contet.
    Thank you for your help
    Best regards
    Tim

    After looking at this a bit more, this may or may not work so we might need to get dirty on this one .....................
    Some clues can be found here : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-publisher/bip-bookbinding-176639.pdf
    Looking at Page 7, it should be obvious that we can add additional deatils to the reports, including cover pages.
    Though, after looking at Page 8, I think I may have you slightly in the wrong direction. toc-template appears to simply cover the commands for the table of contents and there is another template to control everything. But is that file visible to edit?
    If you run FRConfig.cmd, you can find more clues.
    Go to the MBeans tab, expand com.hyperion, then expand Financial Reporting, and Attributes.
    The two attributes that immeidately jump out are TextPrintTemplate and BookTOCPrintTemplate
    - TextPrintTemplate is the FR_TextTemplate.doc file in <<EPM_ORACLE_INSTANCE>>/products/FinancialReporting/bin/ folder
    - BookTOCPrintTemplate is the toc-template.rtf file previously discussed.
    Once again, though, the other template exposed to us is most likely just driving the content and is not at a high enough definition level for this to work how you want it to.
    I would say to use the example in the PDF and try adding that to the table of contents page before it does all of the loops. Perhaps it will work from there, perhaps not.
    If that doesn't work, Thursday we can attempt to drill into this more.

  • How to get chapter numbering in table of contents?

    In a document I create, I use numbering for chapter titles, paragraphs and so on. They do appear in the table of contents, for each level I indicate, but in this table of contents, the numbering is not reflected. Only the first chapter has a number in front of it, all others don't.

    I have the same problem in Pages 5.0. Just posted about that here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5755623?tstart=0
    I am not sure about 4.0, I thought I never had any problem with it but I might have added it manual. With that stats fruhulda probably knows best.
    Anyway isnt it strange that a wordeditor can't show automaticly added numbers for chapters?

  • Problem with automatic table of contents Level headings

    I am having trouble with the Table of contents in Adobe Indesign. When I create my automatic table of contents one of the Level headings that is supposed to appear under Chapter 1 instead appears under the Introduction heading. On the actual page where the heading paragraph styles have been defined the 2nd Level heading is as it should be underneath Chapter 1. So what I end up having to do is move them manually in the TOC. But I don’t want to have to do this and it would be great if Indesign instead did the automatic table of contents correctly.
    I wonder if it has anything to with the fact that our template is set up with headings (that sit outside the body text to the left) as text boxes which we place inside the main body text box (they have anchored object settings on them so the heading sits off to the side).  Whilst the anchored text box is exactly in the right sequence, maybe indesign senses and reads the anchored text box last?
    I have an example of the file and the problem that is occurring in the pdf, it can be downloaded from:
    Is there a solution to this?  If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

    I've been playing with this for a while, and quite honestly I don't understand why it's doing things the way it is. It's working correctly on Page 11, which seems to me to have exactly the same structure, except for the subtitle. It also works correctly if I copy the frames from page 14 and paste into a new doc.
    Things I tried that did not work: Export as .inx and move the pages to a new doc. You might try copying the text and pasting into a new doc.

  • Table Of Contents - Level Formatting

    InDesign CS3
    Ive created a long document that catalogs all of my company's graphic options for our motorcycles.
    Each page contains 2 graphics along with their respective part number and graphic name. The part number and graphic name for each graphic are set in 2 separate text boxes and setup as 2 different paragraph styles.
    Im trying to create a Table Of Contents that lists, by section, the part number, graphic name and page number for every graphic. Currently my TOC looks like this:
    Section
    Part Number
    Graphic Name5
    However, I would like for it to look like this:
    Section
    Part Number Graphic Name5
    I don't see an option to keep TOC Levels on the same line...
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Desi

    You can run on entries, but it runs on all entries. You'll just have to do a search and replace.

  • Make table of contents links keep current zoom level, not zoom out to full page

    When Indesign creates tables of contents, they automatically link to the paragraphs the links point to, so that in an interactive PDF, clicks and prods take the user to that page. Great.
    What's not so great is, that the hyperlinks / cross-references / jump-links / whatever that are created behind the scenes within the table of contents appear to:
    ...be automatically set to reset the zoom to full page width
    ...not be editable in any way
    Normal cross references retain the zoom level that the user has chosen, and normal hyperlinks that point to a page in the document have a range of settings about what zoom level change (if any) should be imposed on the user, which can be set to 'inherit zoom'.
    How do I set up a table of contents that doesn't annoy users by resetting their chosen zoom level to an artitrary default when they use the interactive table of contents?
    I'm really hoping I don't have to ditch Indesign's table of contents feature and create every cross reference manually.

    (editted) So it turns out that you can 'expand' a table of contents by copying and pasting it - this fills the hyperlinks panel with links that can be editted (like above) but breaks the auto-update - they're no longer a TOC, they're just a text frame full of links. (I had got different copies mixed up when I thought the frame holding the editable links was also auto-updating)
    The greying out of the links was a red herring, just something to do with the fact they were on a master page.
    It does mean that one possible TOC workflow is:
    Create a TOC on the pasteboard somewhere.
    Before finalising the document, update this TOC and alt-drag the 'live' TOC creating an editable 'dead' copy in an appropriate place in the document
    Edit the link properties of the links in the 'dead' copy (don't forget that you can select multiple hyperlinks at once by holding down shift, and edit things like the Zoom Setting all at once with Hyperlink Options in the Hyperlinks flyout menu. )
    Then, if you make other changes to the document later on, delete the dead copy, update and re-copy the live original, and re-do the changes to the new copy
    This isn't a bad method - it just adds about a minute's work each time you export a PDF (delete, update TOC, alt-drag, shift-select the new batch of .XXXX links at the bottom of the Hyperlinks panel, > Hyperlink Options, Zoom Setting  > Inherit Zoom, done).
    Alternatively, you could manually build a TOC using cross-references if you want links to the exact position on the page, not just the top of the appropriate page.

    2) The related heirarchies have been defined.
    3) when trying to go to one of the LTS and trying to set the logical level aggregation im not able to see the levels columns corresponding nor im getting the get levels option to get them. where am i going wrong?
    when im trying to join a fact by pulling it on to the fact...i can see the levels in content tab,but when i try to define levels and check it its giving me error "There are no levels matching the BI algorithm"

  • OBIEE 11g - No fact table exists at the requested level of detail

    My dimesion tables are snow-flake.
    Table1 has Key, ProductName, ProductSize, Table2Key
    Table2 has Key, ProductDepartment, Table3Key
    Table3 has Key, ProductDivision
    I have created 2 hierarchies (in same dimension Product). Note: ProductSize is in Table1.
    ProductDivision > ProductDepartment > ProductName (shared level)
    ProductSize > ProductName (shared level)
    There are 2 fact tables
    Fact1 is at ProductName level
    Fact2 is at ProductDepartment level
    When I create a request with columns as ProductSize and some measure; and filter it on ProductDepartment. The request fails with error "No fact table exists at the requested level of detail", but the request can ideally be answered using fact with ProductName level.
    I have properly defined logical level keys in the hierarchies and logical level in the LTS (content tab)
    Can anyone point me what I am doing wrong here?

    Since both fact tables are at same granular level I would suggest to map each other (Signon_A maping Signon_B) in BMM layer logical fact @source.
    Considering them as Fact and with fact extension.
    BTW: Did you try by setting implicit fact at subject area properties?

  • Manipulate table of contents results

    Hi everyone,
    Within each chapter of a book I’m working on, there are level 1 headings that look like the following:
    ¶5-100 Context
    So each of these headings has a paragraph number, ie. ¶5-100 and then the name of the heading, ie. Context. There’s a tab between the para number and the content of the heading.
    I need to create a specific chapter by chapter table of contents using the content of these level 1 headings. The information will be located at the start of each chapter.
    It’s easy enough to do but when the TOC is genereated I get the following effect:
    ¶5-100 Context  [tab]    page number
    ¶5-120 next heading   [tab]   page number
    ¶5-140 next heading   [tab]   page number
    ¶5-160 next heading   [tab]   page number
    I don’t need the page numbers at all and instead of the above, I need the following result:
    Context [tab] ¶5-100
    next heading [tab] ¶5-120
    next heading [tab] ¶5-140
    next heading [tab] ¶5-160
    Once I have the above effect, I would then go ahead and create cross references where the para numbers within the TOC are the source of the Xref and the destination is the relevant heading within the body of the chapter.
    So is there a way to manipulate the results so that the headings appear as the above? I know it probably can’t be done but just thought I’d ask incase I’m missing something.
    Appreciate any help.

    b. Use this Nested Style:
    [None] through 1 [Tab Characters]
    yourStyle up to 5 [Words]
    (The latter number is because I'm not sure how InDesign counts 'words'. There doesn't seem to be a "Up to End Of Line" code.)
    When I want to run a nested style up to the end of a paragraph in a situation like this I often just tell it to run up to an end nested character style marker and don't insert one. You can use any character that isn't encountered and the nested style will run to the end of the paragraph. In this particular case you could also "swap" the formatting and define the paragraph style the way you want the numbers to look, then apply a nested style through 1 tab to change the text ahead of it, then there's no need for a "none."

  • Table of Contents Styles

    In the past I've successfully created tables of contents. I created the necessary styles just as I would any other style. I just now noticed a menu item called table of contents styles under Layouts. What's this for? Why is it necessary?

    TOC styles are for creating TOCs based on your Paragraph Style.
    You have to structure you document complete with paragraph and character styles (which should be done anyway).
    Create for each level entry in the TOC a different TOC paragraph style (these are normal Paragraph Styles used for the TOC).
    Define a TOC style, where you choose the Paragraph Style which is drawn into the TOC and choose the level and which TOC paragraph style will be used.
    You have a great benefit for using these styles:
    Changes in the document are reflected automatically (after actualization) in the TOC.
    Automatic page numbers.
    Several TOC in one document (Chapters, Tables, Images, Mathematical or Chemical Forms, etc.)

  • Table of Contents vanishes when trying to update or regenerate in CS6

    I'm working with InDesign CS6 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
    This is an old, legacy document. Today, I needed to remove two pages, so of course, I need to update my table of contents and index. I had no problems with the index - it regenerated just fine. The TOC is another matter. I clicked Layout > Update Table of Contents. I got the message stating that the contents was updated. However, what actually happened was the TOC text vanished! And, it actually is gone because I can see two empty paragraph markers where the TOC used to be. I've tried regenerating it instead of doing the update. Same result - it's gone.
    I'm still fairly new to InDesign, so I'm not sure what I can do to troubleshoot this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Sounds like ID doesn't think there are any paragraphs with the style names you've selected for inclusion.
    But I'm not a fan of direct conversion of legacy files because these sorts of things, or worse, happen a lot. Try this: Remove minor corruption by exporting

  • "Table of Contents" web part - How to have expand/collapse buttons? (I can use only CSS/JavaScript/JQuery)

    Hi there,
    I have a Table of Contents web part which is great. Is there a way so it shows only top level sites and then one can expand or collapse any top level site to see/hide the subsites?
    As of now it shows
    HR Parent site
    - HR sub site 1
    - HR sub site 2
    IT Parent site
    - IT sub site 1
    - IT sub site 2
    What I want is
    + HR Parent site
    + IT Parent site
    So one can expand or collapse on demand.
    Any relevant JS/CSS/JQuery code?
    Thank you so much.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to expand or collapse the level site for the table of contents web part.
    I have made a simple code demo below to achieve this scenario, you can refer to it.
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(function(){
    var iconCollapse = "/_layouts/images/collapse.gif";
    var iconExpand = "/_layouts/images/expand.gif";
    $("div[id='WebPartWPQ2'] li ul").hide();
    //ugly way
    var $t = $("#WebPartWPQ2 div").children("ul").children("li").children("div");
    $t.each(function(){
    //console.log($(this).html());
    $(this).attr("style", "float: right; margin-right: 297px; line-height: 8px;");
    $(this).css("display","inline");
    $("<a src=" + iconExpand + "></img>").insertBefore($(this));
    $("a[class='min']").click(function()
    var img = $(this).children();
    //Traverse the DOM to find the child UL node
    var subList = $(this).siblings().children('ul');
    //Check the visibility of the item and set the image
    var Visibility = subList.is(":visible")?img.attr('src',iconExpand):img.attr('src',iconCollapse);
    //Toggle the UL
    subList.slideToggle();
    </script>
    Note: Yous should change the Web part ID and the css style to fit your environment.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Span columns problem with Table of Contents order

    Hello,
    I'm having a strange issue with headings that span columns and Table of contents order. My document has a heading paragraph in a coloured box, which is then inserted in-line into a 2-column text box. The paragraph style for the box (set to in-line) is set to span all columns, so that the 2-columned text doesn't get messed up.
    When I create a table of contents, the Heading style that is inside the coloured box is being picked up fine, but even though it is inserted before the headings below it, it is showing up after the level 2 headings, instead of before.
    I have confirmed that the insertion of the blue bar is before the text below it, as when I remove the span columns option, the TOC works as it is supposed to. Is this a bug?

    Hi there, thanks for the reply.
    The only way I could move the inline box to the left was to make a custom anchor and change the X value, this did not affect the TOC unfortunately. I also checked the location of the invisible marker indicating the location of the inline text box, and it is definitely before the heading that follows. I confirmed this by removing the span columns option for that paragraph, and the TOC displayed properly after doing that, meaning there is likely some problem with the span columns option not properly recognizing the order of content.
