ToC stops at 17?

Hi so all my chapter titles have the exact same paragraph styles applied to them, however no matter what I try when i export to epub the toc style  for some reason stops at chapter seventeen of twenty five. Help?

from what i can tell it has to do with the style im using  for the chapter title, because i tried switching it the style i use for the subheads and it works past 17. but whats confusing is that then went and made a new chapter title style  and synced all the styles, and used that new style for the toc style and it still stopped at 17. any ideas?
Is it possible that you synched the book files with a style source file that wasn't updated with the newest paragraph styles? Also, when you synchronize a book of files, there's no way to change style mapping. That is, if you replaced your old chapter title style with a new chapter title style that's named differently, synchronizing doesn't can't replace the old style with the new style. You can do this manually (or perhaps there's a script somewhere) in each file, with the Load Paragraph Styles option on the panel menu of the Paragraphs or Paragraph Styles panels.

  • TOC stopped updating properly...

Hello - I'm having an issue with my Table of Contents.  It has stopped updating properly.  I have a 90+ page manual where I had the TOC working fine.  I have been saving revisions of the manual when edits were made.  The issue is that when I go to Update TOC, it clears the entire TOC of all the headings for the main body content.  It keeps the "title" and the "Index" heading which happens to be the last entry for the TOC (this heading/page is not threaded with the rest of the main body).
I went back and looked at TOC for previous revisions, and I changed something 2 revisions ago and since then the TOC stopped working.  The only significant format change I can remember is that the TOC originally was not threaded in with the main content of the document.  Looking back a couple of revisions ago I had gone in and threaded it to the main body of the document.  By the time I realized there was an error occurring I had saved yet another revision.  But in this last revision I went in an unthreaded the TOC from the rest of document but it did not correct the issue.  Needless to say, I have made several edits within the document that I haven't necessarily tracked (grammer, spelling).  So going back several revisions to the properly working TOC would require re-edits of that revision....something I'd rather not have to do.
I'm using 3 levels of Section Headings/Paragraph Styles in my TOC --- and i've gone into the main body and those headings are still properly set as their respective paragraph style.  I've even tried creating a completely NEW TOC in my latest revision with just one paragraph style and nothing comes up in my TOC.  Its like nothings there or it can't see the tagged style in the document, but I know it is there.
    Any ideas?  Please help.
    THANKS!

Hallelujah!  I believe I've fixed it.  Thank you to whoever added that "more like this" box on the side of the forums!  And for the following forum post from 2008.  Ain't the internet grand?
This appears to have fixed the issue:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/1313052#1313052
I knew through my back revisions it was a threading issue.  So I followed the above poster's advice and I basically CUT my entire manual and then deleted all the empty pages.  Added 2 pages back and then pasted my content into those pages.  Tested the TOC and when it asked me If i wanted to include overset text I knew I'd fixed it and that it was looking at all the headings.  The whole content came up just like its supposed to.  Then I added 90 more pages and expanded the thread back. All seems to be good.
Do NOT put TOC in your threaded story.  Not cool.  I had it right at first and then put it in there ---- that's what screwed me up.
    ....now back to work!

  • ToC stopped working on deadline day

I have an InDesign book project, over 300 pages, due at the printer today.
This morning my table of contents stopped working properly, it no longer references most of my chapters. I'm getting ToC references for 3 out of 37 chapters.
I've tried creating a new book file: no help.
I've tried removing and re-adding chapters to the book: no help.
I've tried rebuilding the ToC style: no help.
I've tried reapplying the paragraph styles which are supposed to be referenced: no help.
I've tried adding new text objects to the missing chapters, these do show up in the ToC.
If I copy the content out of a chapter and into a new document, it will be show up. But if I do this to all 34 missing chapters I will A) miss the deadline, B) lose all my see[also] index references, and C) go mad.
    Has anyone seen this before?
Got any ideas or suggestions for a fix?
    [panicking]

I'll try the .inx route. That's a good suggestion, thanks.
Yes, I do have 'Include Book Documents (bookName)' ticked and it is showing the correct book name. Definitely worth checking for the obvious mistake
    [edited to add]
    Ixnay on the .inx, eh?*
*That is to say: the InDesign Interchange format export-import tango did not help.

  • TOC and text flow bug?

I have a TOC that spans about 5 pages (or should).  I've created the TOC and shift click insert it, it then place 2 1/2 pages (about 50% of the total) and then a preflight error is displayed regarding overflow text. Clicking it indicates the problem to be located 2 pages after where the TOC stopped (at only 50% inserted/displayed), and the page in between the last page of the half-placed/displayed TOC and the preflight error message, both are blank.
    For example:
    Section 1
    i - TOC page 1 placed (w/shift click)
ii - TOC page 2 (flowed)
iii - TOC page 3 (flowed, but stopped at half page and only 50% of total TOC)
    iv - Blank page
v - Blank page - preflight error messge refers to this page
On a side note: how to see/determine quickly that a page/spread has content? When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete message displaying indicating the page has content.
    Thx

    Regarding:
    From my first/intial post:
When I trash a page in the Page palette, a confirmation delete  message displaying indicating the page has content.
    And you wrote:
"t's also possible you've got hidden objects on a page you want to  delete, but that usually would be less likely than a page number."
While searching for an explanation of this mysteriously missing last page from my other concurrent post, in opening a previous document version, I saw many additional pages at the end of the section, apprx. 5 addtional - all blank with excpetion to the master number marker and a text frame (which I assume were placed for the multiple repeated TOC inserstions). So I began deleting those (for "fun"), beginning with the last, first, and noticed with each delete by trashcan icon, there was no similar confirmation message as was present higher up in the section when deleting the TOC pages, until the third, forth and fifth from last (intial) pages (as they decrement with each deletion etc.), then the confirmation delete message appeared. I undid the previous deleltions with Cntrl Z, and compared each page looking at the layout etc. (as you suggested), and there is no difference at least visually and object-wise (as displayed) between any of them. So then, why would two (the last two) delete with no content message, and the remaining three have the content message...

  • Updating TOC in iBooks Author

Change a chapter title does not update the TOC page.
Any way to edit that title from the TOC?
    thanks

I just started using iBooks Author and ran into trouble when adding a hyperlinked page of chapters as a "Section", not knowing what other way to add it since I didn't want it labeled as a chapter.  In the process, the TOC stopped showing anything more than the Section I added, with the visual page view and dotted slider thing only showed one blank page and nothing else.  After driving myself crazy for a while and finding nothing useful in comments to similar problems here, I started hunting around at the bottom of the TOC window where those little blue arrows are.  They didn't have any effect, but when I clicked on the little percent window next to them, I came up with a pop up menu saying different things including fit page or something like that.  When I checked that choice, lo and behold, my slider thingy worked again and showed all my chapters again.   Still wish they  would provide an automatically hyperlinked Table Of Contents page like normal books have so you don't have to scroll through a bunch of pictures of pages to find what you are looking for, but it isn't too hard to make one bookmarking the text at the beginning of each chapter and hyper linking your chapter list to it.  Still a new user, but at least I got the thing working again.  Don't know if this will help others at all since there seem to be a variety of problems with  figuring out how to use the TOC.  I guess I'll have to buy a book on how to use the thing.  Who ever invented help menus forgot that you actually have to explain how to do things to be of any help.  Mostly it isn't at all obvious.

  • TOC strangeness...

Wonder if anyone can suggest something...
Been working in a variety of Pages documents, using the TOC feature, which I love. All working great, but then suddenly (after I'd reduced the font size in one TOC style) the TOC stopped having the leading line from the Heading to the page number - although the tab stop is still there in the style (and this has happened on all TOC styles). Odder still, this effects other previously-created documents (where I haven't changed the TOC style) - and even if a document is opened in Pages on another Mac.
Any idea how this might have happened, and how I can get those nice leading lines to work again automatically?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hey -
Thank you very much for the reply... in the meantime I've sort of fixed it/worked out something... the page numbers stopped moving, and leading lines disappeared, because the tab stops were suddenly outside the right boundary of the pages. Moving them back within the width got everything back. Why this changed on all documents at once I have no idea, especially as I hadn't changed the default size or messed with the blank template while it happened (though I've been extensively customizing it since I started)... but either way it's helped me learn how that feature actually works, so I guess I'll put it down to fate... and thus deem it a feature

  • How to update a table of contents when the feature "update table of contents" is unavailable?

    Hello folks,
I've been struggling all morning with this issue and am completely desperate.
    First, some info:
    - I am making a spanish versions of an english documents: everything in the original doc was then edited, including TOCs. What I got at first, was a first spanish document already filled with spanish content.
    - I was not the primary creative of the document I'm workin on and am unable to get in touch with whoever that can be.
    - My document is a 200 pages text only document, with 12 chapters and, at the beginning of each chapter, a specific TOC for that very chapter.
    - Inside each chapter, there are only Sections and Subsections, no other style. Those are the two levels in the TOCs.
    - There is also a General TOC at the beginning of the document: that one only shows the Chapter names and the page number where to locate them.
    My problem:
    - Somewhere along the way, from one doc to another, the TOCs stopped to update the page numbers automatically.
    - Now I have sections and subsections that are shown in one page (for instance 204) but they actually are on page 135.
    - When I try to update the TOCs, I stand on the TOC itself as I was told in many tutorials, but the "update table of contents" feature is unavailable, even in the main TOC at the very beginning of the doc.
It is like if I wasn't standing in the actual TOC, but there is no actual TOC anywhere that I could refer to.
What can I do? I am changing the wrong page numbers manually but, of course, that is not ideal... and it may become more and more tricky while I keep producing new documents each based on the previous one.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Warm regard from sunny Paris, France!
    Sasha

    You've just confused me.
My understanding of how this is set up is that either:
This is a book, and there is a master TOC that includes all book documents and a document-specific TOC in each component file, or
This is a single file and there is one master TOC that includes all sections and a section-specific TOC that includes only the individual section.
In the first case, I think you would want two TOC styles set up, one that includes the chapter heads (if I understood how you said this worked) for the for the master, and you would include all docs in the book when you generate it, and a second style for the individual chapters, with the subheadings you want to include.
In the second case, it would be similar, but instead of only one style to cover the section TOCS, I think you would need to create a unique set of pargraph styles for the headings in each section (they can all be the same format, based one section, just with unique names), and then make a TOC style for each section that includes only the styles from that section.
OK,  wait a sec. I just reread what you said: "Another thing: when the numbers are "linked" and updating well, they  display indide a little box. Not a text box, but a kind of little frame  around the numbers. That frame makes it imposible to delete just one  number: when the TOC says that Section 6.1 is in page 135, for example,  you cannot delete just the 5, it deletes, not just the 3 numbers, but  also the doted tab."
I think these are NOT normal TOCs created by using Layout > TOC (but you could replace them with ones that are, if you set up your styles properly and the text you want to include is appearing on the pages). Those little boxes you mention sound like cross-references, which should update automatically without any intervention at all. Unfortunately, cross-refs can be flakey, especially if they point to another document. I'd open the cross-refs panel and see if you need to recreate a bunch of links.

  • It stops at the loading icon, while TOC shows up fine

Why does a course created with Captivate 6 loads only the beginning with the green loading icon (with Adobe Captivate text above) while you can rollover to see the TOC menu items?
This happens to a few not all of the people who needs to use the course.
    Any solution to this?
    Thanks,

Check the version of Flash Player that these users have on their system.  If it is below the version for which you have published the SWF then they may not be able to open it.

  • Toc intermittently stops expanding

I'm using Adobe Tech Comm Suite to generate the Webhelp for our product. The call seems to work, but often the TOC refuses to expand. Reloading the TOC frame fixes the problem. What are we doing wrong? The calls to the topics are in the form of links in a hint pane and are in the following format:
    <p><a class="help-link"
    onclick="openHelpWnd('  /help/KnowledgeBase.htm#kb/securitypols/Working_with_Default_Policies.htm')">Working with Default Policies
    </a> </p>

We are generating helps with RoboHelp 7 and ToC (and the rest of the navigation pane) generally works fine with IE6 on XP.
For some reason, the ToC sometimes refuses to respond on Firefox 3:
    - When the application opens the "front page" of the help, ToC works OK.
    - When the application opens a page context-sensitively, In some cases ToC does not respond at all. It is always the same parts of the application that open help with a dead ToC. Index and Search still work.
Apparently, things get worse on Vista, or if the help is on a server and not on the user's computer.

  • Keynote files stopped working and TOC has disappeared?

I have a few Keynote files that I brought into iBooks Author. They originally played fine. But now, when I preview on iPad, they simply won't play. Plus, my Table of Contents has disappeared when I go to preview. I can't figure out why. Any thoughts? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your help.  I tried your suggestion, but the .ibooks file had the same issues.  Then I tried  creating a new file and bringing a Keynote file in...still the same problem.  Then I reinstalled iBooks Author...same problem.  Then I got to thinking maybe its got more to do with my iPad.  So I was just getting ready to reinstall iBooks.  Anyway, I disconnected my iPad from my iMac, and for some reason, everything started working.  Bizarre.  Anyway, thanks again for your help!  :-)

  • Keep Getting Adobe RoboHelp 9 has stopped working Message

I am running on Windows 7 Professional, SP1, 4GB RAM, 64-bit OS, with Administrative privileges using Adobe RoboHelp version 9.0.1.232. I am creating projects on my C drive and linking them to Word 2010 docx files that are on the network then generating them as AIR files for testing purposes at this point. Each linked document is a technical manual (with a TOC and index) having anywhere between 100 and 1000 pages. The plan is to create a project for each of the 20 manuals then link them together and generate a Master Project as an AIR file to distribute to our customers. The manuals contain flowcharts, bullets, numbered lists, images, tables, hyperlinks, etc with approximately 100 custom styles defined in one Normal.dotm file. Only defined styles are used in each of the manuals and all manuals use the same Normal.dotm file. Each custom style is linked to a corresponding style in a custom RoboHelp css file used by all RH projects.
I have a default project that is used to create each separate project which includes a linked docx file that contains each of the custom styles so I do not have to link each Word style to the corresponding RH style every time I create a project for a different manual. My process is this: create project, link docx file, change Properties to create new TOC, Index, Glossary, Generate the linked document, Update linked document (when applicable), generate the AIR file, then update the Word document (in Word) as necessary. I then Update the linked document in RH and generate the AIR file again....and keep doing that until it looks good.  So far, I have successfully created projects for 11 manuals with projects ranging in size from 20 to 50 MB. So I know the problem is not my styles, etc.
My problem is this....I will sometimes get the message 'Adobe RoboHelp 9 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available'. Sometimes, I will get the message when the manual has been updated in Word and I select Update in RoboHelp while other times it occurs when I am first getting the project set up. Right now, I am getting this message when I select Generate for the linked manual. I checked my application log file and see that I am getting an EventID 1000, Task Category 100 error. The manual is 477 pages/7.6 MB and the RoboHelp project is 42 MB and has only two really small flowcharts.  I have successfully created a project for this manual a couple times before after updating the Word document for things I saw in the AIR file, but when I selected Update in RH, I would get the message and the project was then corrupt so I had to start over. I know it is not an installation problem because I can then open another project and it works fine.
Things I have tried without success: copied the linked manual to my C drive to remove the network aspect. Closed all other applications so only the Word document and RoboHelp are open. My experience has been that in most cases, RoboHelp is happier when I have the manual I am working with open in Word but have also tried it without Word running. I have tried creating the project on the root of C instead of in my folder. Tried it when no one else was on the network (5 am). In one case, I pulled out a chapter that was about 50 pages of flowcharts - which fixed that one. All our flowcharts are inserted into borderless tables as metafiles so they are not free-floating.
Any help anyone could give me as to why this is happening or what I can do differently so as to prevent this from happening would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!
    Kathi

My inclination is that it is something in the projects or in the manuals being linked that is the culprit because that is where the consistency lies - projects were created identically and manuals all follow identical formats. The problem typically only occurs after the project has been successfully created and the manual is subsequently updated and I am syncing the manual in RH so I can generate a new AIR file. This is the first time the project has consistently corrupted every time I try to generate the Word document after linking it in RH. This makes little sense to me since it generated fine a couple weeks ago and I did nothing special when I updated it in Word yet when I tried to update it in RH, that is when it originally corrupted. The bottom line is that I cannot 100% trust that any project I run will work the next time. I end up just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
My problems seemed to start once I went to RH9 (from RH8) because we had upgraded from MS Office 2003 to the 2010 version and I needed 9 for the docx extension. Like I said, it is not all the time - I can be beating my head against the wall getting one of the projects to work, then create 3 more projects that have no problems and then the next one leaves me wanting to throw my PC through a window....
Deleting the CPD does not corrupt the project, it just removes my default linked document that allows me to circumvent linking the styles individually for that project. Once I have a manual linked and I remove the CPD, it just creates a new one. What I am saying is that if I delete the CPD file, it does not prevent the project from corrupting nor does it make the corrupted project viable again.
    thanks!

  • TOC (table of contents) Formatting/Leader Tab Problems

    BACKGROUND
I have found it impossible to format TOCs with leader tabs as I've seen the procedure outlined in numerous forum posts, books, and elswehere. I am an intermediate FrameMaker user running FM 9 on Windows XP Pro. I run the same setup on a home and office machine with the same problem.
I am in the process of migrating very large volumes of our company's documentation from LaTek to FM and this issue is proving to be insurmountable.I need to have complete control over this process, instead of "making do" with the default TOC.
I have spent three days studying every nuance of the issue, which usually leads me to some insight or pattern that lets me solve the problem, or at least share some clue on the forums. However, in this case, FM either doesn't work as its supposed to or it implements my changes in a seemingly arbitrary manner. So I'm not sure if this is a bug or a user error. I've also experienced the occasional crash of FM during all this work, oftentimes this is preceded by the Paragraph Designer window freezing up and refusing to change views within the window (i.e. basic, default font, etc.).
    THE PROBLEM
More specifically, I've learned to manage general formatting with the building blocks on the "reference page", but the leader tabs I use for the page numbers almost never propogate, unless I use the sample TOC included with FM.
I am certain they are properly formatted, I've even copied examples directly from files that I know work (FM sample files).
When I implement the process manually, I insert the tab between the building blocks (no spaces), set a right flush tab, double click and choose tab leader option. Then I go to "body page" view, save the document, and regenerate the TOC. Usually nothing happens. Ocassionally, after regenerating several times or creating a fresh TOC, some of the changes magically propogate.
I have even tried importing the format of another TOC, which only seems to work randomly. Mostly not.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Douglas

Thanks for your quick responses, as well as your other suggestions for my project.
I am running FM 9.0p230. I tried upgrading to 9.0.3 when I began encountering this problem, but received an error message telling me I was running the wrong version of FM. If any one is familiar with this error message and can mention the fix before I delive into that problem, it is also appreciated.
I have attached the TOC. I'm not sure how/if this can be used to help me troubleshoot, so please let me know. I am new to the forums and the development side of FM.
I did "update all" on the paragraphs tags in question. If you look in the body view of this page with text symbols turned on, you can see the symbols for the second tab stops I have placed between the text and page number. That informatoin also appears in the Paragraph Designer. Both of those things add to my confusion on this matter, because that would seem to indicate I have globally applied the paragraph tags correctly, right?
If you go to the reference page, you will see my treatment of the building blocks.
Thanks again in advance for help,
    Douglas

  • Status not appearing in TOC for slides in folder

    Hi
i have a sequence of slides. in my TOC i put some in a folder so they appear in one category say section 01
now when i run my exe and open toc status check sign is only available for slides out of the folder. the slides in section 01 has no check mark in fron of them even when these slides are already visited.

I'm not 100% sure about how the TOC status works, but I think that in order for it to mark a slide with a checkmark you either need an interaction on the slide (somewhere you click) or need to watch the slide to the end (e.g. without anything stopping it from going to the next page).
To disable the status in the TOC you open up the TOC settings and remove the tick in the "Show flag" box. Then your TOC will not have the green checkmarks anymore.

  • Merged Projects Not Appearing in WebHelp TOC

Following the instructions on the Grainge site, I created a
merged project with the following folder structure:'
    BAM\parent --->parent project location
    BAM\Child\Project1 --->child location
    BAM\Child\Project2 --->child location
    BAM\Child\Project3 --->child location
I added the metatag redirecting the first topic in the parent
project to the default topic in Project1.
    When I generated the output:
I got a nested set of navigation frames along with the error
msg from IE saying it blocked the content from running ActiveX.
The correct TOC books, one for each project, did display in
the outer navigation frame. However, once I clicked to allow the
content to run, the TOC would disappear. When I went to IE Tools,
Options and selected to allow ActiveX to run from My Computer, the
error message stopped appearing, but the TOC disappeared entirely.
I did get the extra set of nav frames to disappear by
clearing the nav option in Project1 when I generated it.
    Thanks for any tips.

Hello. I have been sailing along working on my merged
projects, but then I decided to change the name of one of
them--twice. The first time I changed the name it continued to work
fine. But this morning I changed the name again and now the child
project no longer appears in the merged TOC.
**This is the first merged project in the parent project's
TOC. However, it still doesn't appear even if I move it farther
    down in the list.
**The redirect from the parent project's default topic to the
child project's default topic works fine.
**The child project's TOC works fine when I generate it
    independently.
**I changed the Title of the project and the name of the
project. I regenerated the parent project to get the new folder
name and generated the child project into that new folder name.
Perhaps I did all of these things in the incorrect order? At first
I didn't change the folder name, but then later I did. And I
    deleted the old output folder...
**The new project is being pointed to in the parent project's
cshdat_robohelp.htm file (though interestingly there is no order to
the list of child projects in that location).
