USB wont recognize external drive

I see that there have been a lot of problems with the usb ports recognizing external hard drives.  Some of the fixes are so confusing, I cant even follow them!  Does anyone have an easy fix for this problem or do you think apple care will know?  i have used this drive for about a6 months with no problem, and then all of a sudden my Imac wont recognize the drive.

HI
You should check in System Profiler, under the USB section to see if the drive appears there (Apple -> About This Mac -> More Info -> USB)
Also, try resetting the SMC & PRAM to see if that helps

    Hi Tom,
I'm so impressed with how you help everyone solve their problems. I will do my best here, but my husband will be home soon and knows how this large external is formatted.
How late do you all work there? I'm on east coast. Is the screen shot you wanted? I opened up external and

  • USB 3.0 external drive extremely slow on Macbook Air 2014

Dear Apple Support Team & Folks in Apple Community,
Seriously, I have a problem with my new Macbook Air 2014 which has equipped with USB 3.0 port. I read through the forum and hardly find a solution for this.
Recently, I plugged in my USB 3.0 external drive and expect that it would reach the same file transfer speed as that on my PC. Instead of 625 MB/s (5 Gbit/s), it was hardly reaching 60 MB/s (480 Mbit/s) to my surprise! Sounds like Macbook Air doesn't recognize USB 3.0 device properly. I have tried Western Digital and Seagate devices but failed to get reasonable transfer speed on my Macbook Air.
I tried it again with my USB 2.0 external drive on Macbook Air and only got the transfer speed around 15 - 20 MB/s which is disappointing.
Any patches or Firmware updates would be appreciate!
I have OS X 10.9.3 already with EFI and SMC update patched by App Store.

I would be interested to know which consumer grade non-raid external harddisk that could reach 6xx mb/sec.
The speed you mentioned should be normal, since most of these are 5400rpm drives (asumming it is 2.5 inch).

  • OSX can no longer find USB 3.0 external drive

My macbook air was able to read from my USB 3.0 external drive a couple weeks back when I last plugged it in prior to yesterday. Yesterday, when I plugged the drive back into the computer though, my machine was unable to detect the drive at all.  It was not in finder, the desktop, or disk utility. Nor was it visible with the "diskutil list" command.  I plugged the drive into a separate windows PC, which was able to access it fine.  I scoured online for some tips, and ended up trying to use the usb prober tool, which didn't work.  The drive has its own power adapter, and is not bus-powered.  It turns on whenever I plug it in, but my machine is not able to detect it. I do not have another USB 3.0 device to test the macbook air with, but I have used other USB 2.0 external drives, which are detected by my macbook air fine.  I updated to 10.8.3 before I plugged the USB 3.0 drive in, but I am not sure if that would be the cause of this issue.  Are there any other tips that I could try that may remedy this issue? Any advise would be much appreciated with this predicament.

Try restarting your Macbook then plug the USB External Drive again and see if that works.
if all else fails - try doing a SMC RESET and see if that sorts it out for you.
    Good luck

  • 945GT Speedster-A4R - and USB 3.0 external drive

    Hello
I just got a USB 3.0 external drive, which I wish to connect to the 945GT Speedster-A4R board. However when the external drive is connected, the board will not boot, but hang in the post screen right when initialising memory.
If I connect the external drive after windows log-on, it works fine.
Anything I can do to be able to boot the board with the external USB 3.0 drive already connected ?

Thanks for the fast reply !

  • Why does my Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive keep disappearing?

    Hi All,
Having major problems with a Thermaltake Silver River 5G USB 3.0 External Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153160).  External drive contains Western Digital 2TB drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136891).  I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3 on a 2012 Mac Mini.
Basically, I can plug-in or turn the drive on, it mounts fine. Can run a Time Machine Backup.  At some point (and I think it's when the computer goes to sleep), the drive hangs and I can no longer access it.  Time Machine will hang on "Looking for backup disk".  Drive will still appear in Finder, but I cannot "Eject" it.  I've also tried to do a "umount -f" on it from the Terminal.  Disk Utility still "sees" the device and the disk (partition?), but can't run a repair.
The only way I've found to fix this problem is to reboot the machine.  I've crawled through the System log, but I don't see anything that points to a problem.
What else can I check?  I'm have no idea if it's the hard drive, the external USB enclousure, Mac OS X, or the Mac Mini that's the problem.  Please let me know if there is more information I could provide to help solve this problem.  It's really frustrating!!!
    Thanks!
    -Ben

I received an answer from Thermaltake technical support. I asked if perhaps there was a firmware upgrade to prevent their drive from disappearing. They wrote on 22/04/2013:
Thank you for contacting Thermaltake Customer Service.
No firmware to do it. Just set system to never sleep. System will cut/disconnect the USB when it into sleep mode.
I wrote back saying I have never had to do that with other USB devices. And I routinely allow my system to Sleep. Is that an issue with their drive housings? They replied on 23/04/2013:
that is issue with sleep mode.
I don't know if this occurs with other USB 3.0 drives and Time Machine. Somehow, I doubt it. Anyway, it sounds as though my Thermaltake is destined for eBay...

  • New computer won't recognize external drive[s]

Just got an HP Pavilion 500t Desktop with Windows 7.   Although the USB ports (front and back) WILL recognize an 8 Gig thumb drive, we cannot get it to recognize other external drives.   We've tried our old Maxtor 3200 drive (which has all the files from the previous computer) and also a 1 T passport drive that I brought home from work.
What is up with this?   I'm looking for some suggestions, please.
    Thanks

It appears the Maxtor 3200  has an external power supply.  Is the drive showing response to the power pack before plugging into the USB port?  Same for the other drive?
When you state "we cannot get it to recognize other external drives" does that mean the computer does nothing when either one is plugged into the USB port?

  • Mac mini does not recognize external drive

I have an 80GB external drive full of music files. I disconnected my computer to move to a new house and, with everything re-connected, the mini does not recognize the external drive. I wonder whether it is because the internal drive is nearly full. I have tried restarting the computer, disconnecting and re-connecting the USB cable to the external drive, serching for it with the disk utility, un-pluggin the external drive power cable and re-connecting it, but I'm out of ideas. What might have happened?

  • Aperture import does not see/recognize external drive

I've searched quite a bit for an answer to this and have come up empty, so I apologize in advance if I simply missed it.
I am having issues with Aperture not showing a couple external drives in the Import view.  It recognizes my iphones, ipad, SD cards, but not these three external SATA drives, which are formatted NTFS.  The OS sees them as they appear in Finder and I can browse them just fine.
    Any ideas?

I've been using this application without incident for
several weeks now; coming over or rather
transitioning from WIN7 and Lightroom to
MAC OS and Aperture; Aperture is the best DAM
I've seen but a little light as a raw image file processor
IMHO  (so far..that is..I have a whole two weeks of
working with A3 and nearly 5 years with LR)
Anyway's I'm referencing files on the TC and importing
into the Aperture library..there is simply no sign of the import
browser at the bottom of the import screen.. I wonder if the
10.7.1 LION update broke something as I did do that update a
few nites ago and have not tried any imports for a few days..
just noticed this today as the other poster evidently did..
I'm going to try a simple import from a USB thumb drive to see if that works..

  • FireWire does not recognize external drives anymore

FireWire devices are not recognized after using software upgrade. USB 2 still works but firewire port does not mount any external drives. How can I check if my MacBook Pro has a hardware or software problem? I appreciate any help.

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that didn't work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
If that still didn't get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.

I have a 2012 MBPR and the thunderbolt port wont mont an external drive?  I have returned the drive and tried again with another with same issue. any ideas? update says everthing is up to date.

I don't know a thing about the Buffalo drives... it gets good reviews at MacMall... if I were you I would exchange the drive - there may be a simple problem with the TB cable. Or you may have just gotten a dud. One reason that I stick with the LaCie drives is that I've always had good luck with LaCie in general and, having had good luck with the 4TB, I went ahead and purchased the 8TB. I don't know that MicroCenter has LaCie drives but do know that Apple Stores carry them... but I would, at least, get an exchange for your Buffalo and see if that solves the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
