White Screen at Boot When Attempting to Access Recovery or Select a Boot Disk

Introduction
I want to share a solution for a problem I encountered that Apple technical support was unaware of (they said they would create a new kdoc when I called them to share my problem and its solution) and for which I could find no documentation online.
First, this is really a tip rather than a question, but I did leave it marked as a question in case anyone wants to earn some points by responding with a different solution to the problem I am about to describe. Additionally, I do not have a enough points to post a "Tip" so I am just starting a discussion instead.
Next, when I encountered the problem I am about to describe, I had not yet enabled a firmware password.
Finally, a massive "Thank you!" to the Great Pondini (James Pond - http://pondini.org) for helping me learn so much more interesting stuff about various OS X features and functionality (all for no charge) over the years.
Now on to why I have started this discussion...
The Problem
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro (Core i7, SSD, etc.). After working with Setup Assistant to transfer everything from the most recent Time Machine backup of the older MBP I was replacing, applying all OS updates, and then enabling FileVault 2 and letting the requisite disk encryption process complete, I decided to I would go ahead and just proactively repair any permissions and ACLs for my user directory just in case any repair was necessary.
However, after shutting down my MBP, waiting, and then starting it up with Cmd-R being pressed while turning the MBP on, nothing would happen - I would just have a white screen with no Apple logo, no EFI login, no Recovery Console, nothing (and I waited for a very long time for something to show up). My only option was to do what I really do not like doing and that was to just power my new MBP down.
So, I tried again, this time holding down Opt while turning my computer on so as to select a disk at boot. The same problem returned.
Just to check, I once again started up while holding down the Shift key to attempt a Safe Boot. No dice.
Prior to trying all of this I made sure that I did have the Apple Recovery Partition in addition to my user partion and the EFI partition, so I did not understand why this would be happening. Why could I not boot into Recovery? Why could I not select a boot disk? And, why could I not go into Safe Boot?
To be safe, I started up and logged into my MBP as I normally would, then set my startup disk to be my Recovery USB for OS X 10.8, restarted, and verified all three partitions (and, since I had my Time Machine disk connected all three times I forced the computer to power off, I verified it as well). I then set my startup disk back to my SSD, and logged in and got online to see if anyone else had experienced this issue. After making sure I was not being crazy and using key combinations that were somehow made irrelevant, I shut my MBP down and walked away for a few minutes.
The Solution
So what solved my problem? A good 'ol reset of the NVRAM (aka/fka PRAM). If you are not familiar with how to reset the NVRAM:
Power off your Mac and go do something else for 30 seconds to a minute.
Press and hold down the Opt, Cmd, P and R buttons, and then press the power button. I have big hands and this is a one person operation for me. If you are not so "lucky", find someone to press the power button as you hold those four buttons down.
Continue holding those four buttons down through the first startup chime and then release all four of them only after the second startup chime is sounded.
So, for some reason, I had to reset the NVRAM on a brand new MBP that had been started up only once and restarted only once when I enabled FV2. Maybe something cached needed to be cleared out following the FV2 process, or maybe something funky was carried over after it was setup in the factory and shipped direct to me from China.
The moral of the story is: If you have strage issues during the startup of your Mac, just reset the NVRAM and try again. This has worked for a number of strange issues on various Macs for me in the past and proved to be useful once again on a brand new MBP that I never would have thought needed its NVRAM reset so soon into its lifecycle.
Special Note
There are two processes I always complete and recommend to others following a major software update (e.g. upgrading to a new version of OS X) and when I restore or otherwise transfer the most recent Time Machine backup to my current Mac or to a new one.
First, following a major or massive software update, go into Disk Utility, select your system and data drive(s), and then just click on "Repair Permissions" (Choosing "Verify Pemissions" will result in having to then click "Repair Permissions" if any permissions need to be repaired, so remove one click from the process).
Second, after transferring from a Time Machine backup, I like to make sure that my user directory permissions are good to go before any time is allowed for problems with those permissions to set in. If you are not familiar with the user directory permissions and ACL repair process (this process is not the same as the "Repair Permission" functionality in Disk Utility), here is how to do it:
Shutdown your Mac and wait about 30 seconds.
Press and hold down Cmd-R and then power on your Mac. Once the Apple logo with the spinning wheel shows up, release those two keys.
From within the Recovery Console, open a new Terminal session via the "Utilities" menu.
Invoke the following command (all one word, lowercase): resetpassword
In the "Reset Password" application that opens, select the disk that your user home directory is on, and then click the "Reset" button at the bottom underneath the "Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs" heading and wait for the process to finish. Any messages displayed can typically be safely ignored. If you want to be sure, search for information regarding any messages that you do not like.
Restart your MBP and enjoy using it.
(Note that if you have FV2 enabled, you will need your FV2 Recovery Key to actually reset your password. This is one of many reasons that I enable FV2 - anyone can startup a Mac and go into the Recovery Partition if it exists and reset a password, but having to also enter the FV2 Recovery Key adds a nice extra layer of protection. In addition to that, setting a Firmware Password makes it nearly impossible to start up from any disk other that that which is currrenlty installed in your Mac without knowing the Firmware Password - another security bonus. If someone gets ahold of your Mac, and you have FV2 enabled and an appropriately complex Firmware Password set, then them using your Mac as their own becomes a decently difficult process. It's by no means perfect computer security, but it makes it more challenging for someone to steal and use your Mac.)
If anyone has any other tips to share or additional solutions to problem I described, please discuss and share.

Which OS X is installed on your Mac ?
Troubleshooting advice can depend on that information.

When attempting to access a specific web site on my iPad http://www.sggplastering.co.uk the page seems to load then quickly disappears (resembling a white web page). Other sites seem fine.

Thanks so much for addressing my question. Note that the site (www.xula.edu) was working with Safari this morning, but not this afternoon. I also have now been able to access it with Chrome (remember I could not access the site with Chrome initially). Essentially one time while the site was loading on Chrome I clicked another link on the site and opened a new tab for the link- the original page then loaded and now continues to load. I've been trying to do the same with Safari but the page loads and "goes to white" to quickly.
Other notes: I've powered off my iPad (did not help) and restarted my iPad (also did not help). I can also access all other links (to other www.xula.edu related pages on the site using Safari - I find them via a google search)- it's just the home page that loads then goes to "white screen" very quickly. Thanks again for your reply - any help/advice provided is greatly appreciated.

  • A fatal error when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. Error code 0x8009030d. Windows 8.1.

    Hi,
We develop a server-side application which receives incoming https connections using self-signed certificate. It was all ok while we were using Windows 7 or Windows 2008 as OS, but when our clients started installing Windows 8 as server OS they encountered
big problem: application got unavailable in few hours after start.
In event logs we have following:
A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x8009030d. The internal error state is 10001.
After restart, application recreates certificate and all works normal few hours till next fatal error.
    This
article did not help us. And I repeat that this error appears only on Windows 8 (we tested on Windows 8.1). Windows 2012 Server we did not test yet.
How we can solve this problem?
    Best regards.

    Hi,
Since this article released in 2008,I suspect the code mentioned in this article doesn't  supprot Windows 8.
And since the certificate was written by C#,I suggest you submit a new case on MSDN Forum as they will be more professional on your issue:

  • Was just opening page on Chrome when computer went to white screen and became unresponsive. Did this several weeks ago too. Disk tools find no issues.

While trying to open a link on FB, my computer went to a white screen and become unresponsive. I had to do a hard close. It did reboot and the Disk Aid finds no problems when I ran Verify Disc. This happened 2 weeks ago as well and I had to do a Safe mode reboot. Things seem a little slow when I use internet-Google Chrome (updated). I have a MacBook Pro with  OS X 10.9.4  I'm not sure what else needs to be done? I'm not supertech savvy.

Hello! Since you don't have the startup disk your best shot is using fsck. Tom
when you re-start, hold down the apple key AND the "S" key You'll start up into a command line interface.. it'll look strange but just hang in there. When it's done booting up, you should see something that looks like this: localhost:/ root# at this point, type in 'fsck -f" please note the space before the dash, and of course, ignore the quote marks, then hit return You computer will no go thru some low level checks on your HD. Most likely you'll get a list of a few files that have problems and this procedure will fix them. This should take about 2 or 3 mins, so don't be in a rush. When the line says "VOLUME WAS MODIFIED", this means that changes were made. At this point you should be back at the same localhost:/ root# prompt. run fsck -f again. Wait for it to finish. if you continue to get the "Volume was modified" message, continue to run fsck -f until you'll get a prompt that says The Volume(your HD) appears to be ok, again with the localhost:/ root# prompt. AT this point, type reboot, hit enter and your computer will start up normally. This is not difficult, but you may want to give it a shot when your feel you have a few moments where you can attempt something new and not stress too much.

  • White screen and freeze when trying to restart after downloading Mountain Lion 8.2 upgrade. Mac will not shutdown or restart without freezing on whitescreen.

Downloaded Mountain Lion update 10.8.2 last night. All went well until the message after the download – restart your mac to install this update. The screen went white and the machine didn’t restart. After waiting for quite a while, I shutdown using the main power button. Restarted iMac later and it opened in 10.8.1 and the iTunes icon informed me that I had an upgrade to 10.8.2 that required me to restart the machine to install the upgrade. I did this and again, the screen went white and froze when trying to restart. Rebooted thinking I might be OK to run in 10.8.1 and ignoring the update but when I tried this the Mac worked fine but when I came to shut down I got the white screen freeze thing again. Does anyone have any easy-to-follow solutions for this or will I have to shut down using the main power button every day?
    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • White screen started appearing when in Logic? RAM issue?

    Hi there,
Am a relatively knowledgable MBPro user. I've an old beauty from 2007 which has done me proud all these years. I recently upgraded the OS from the original Tiger ( ! ) to Snow Leopard and the last three months all has worked smoothly.
Yesterday and today however when I've been working in Logic (still Pro8 - yes, I know!) the MBP starts performning verrry slooowwwwly (beachballs) and the white screen obliterates the arrange window. I've restarted a couple of times but the problem's still there when I open Logic and start running it.
    My ETreCheck details are below.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how I mitigate this issue?
    Thanks!
    Adrian

I cannot say with certainty.  I would make certain that your data is backed up, erase the HDD,  install the OSX and then upgrade it to 10.6.8.  Then install the user data.  Any problems that may have been resident should be gone.
RAM upgrade issue: I researched via the Apple site if my particualr MBPro could have extra memory installed. After much online reserach, it was inconclusive - so I called Apple up and a techie told me that my model was one of the last that couldn't have RAM added.  Are you sure he was incorrect?  Obviously adding 1GB would indeed make a huge difference.
Do be suspicious and challenge advice you receive on these and any other forums.  Mistakes can be made and I have to admit I have done so, but not too often.    I have witnessed bad advice but I have never thought it was offered deliberately.
Regarding RAM, you have been misinformed.  Your MBP will accept 3 GB RAM.  Look at these two links, one for OWC and the other Crucial:

Read them carefully and you will see that both corroborate my position.

  • Help needed-white screen of death while attempting to migrated files from imac to macbook

Using the migration program on my macbook (about a month old), I rebooted my imac (about a year old) while pressing down the 't' key.  Instead of rebooting and bringing up the firewire symbol, I got the white screen of death.  Thankfully, I have gotten the imac working again (except I can't get it to recognize my wireless mouse)…but am afraid to try the migration app again for fear of having the same problem and doing irreperable damage......any suggestions for what went wrong the first time and what I should do differently?  Also, any ideas on how to get it to recongize my mouse? It has recongized my keyboard with no issue.

    Download at www.memtestosx.org
Power on your MBP while holding down the Command and S keys to force Mac OS X to boot into Single User Mode. Once you see a black screen with white text, you can release the key combination. After all the system logging is done scrolling past, type 'memtest all 2' (without the quotes) to test all memory two times. Two passes should be enough to detect any blatant problems, but I wouldn’t hesitate to let it run for hours on end if I suspected an intermittent memory problem (memtest all). When complete, you should be greeted with “All tests passed” if your RAM is in good condition. If your system locks up or freezes indefinitely during the test, you may have a bad memory module on your hands.

  • I am getting an error message on all devices when attempting to access mail.

Although I have made no changes to an account I have used for over 5 years now, I suddenly am getting error messages on my iPhone, my wife's iPhone, my iPad, and my laptop when attempting to download mail from my account. The messages are all server or password related. I logged into iCloud.com and while everything else is functioning correctly, attempting to access mail yielded an error message as well (with the option of reporting the error to Apple). Obviously this is a server issue, but I don't see any other postings online, so am uncertain how wide-spread the problem is. I need recommendations regarding the most efficient way of reporting this problem to Apple in order to access my email as soon as possible!!
I have put myself in the express lane for assistance later today, but don't know how helpful that route will be! My devices show that the last time mail could be accessed was yesterday at 8:20 PM.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Same issue here in WI and for me it was at 6:36p CST.
I'm changed my password, removed iCloud from my phone ... tried 3G and WIFI with no luck. I also cannot check it on my Mac or iPad. I was able to get contacts and calenders back on my phone but no mail yet.
Did the whole Apple support thing and apparently I'm part of the 1%
EDIT: Question: are all of you former MobileMe users as well? Just wondering because I know there were going to be some changes as they completely move MobileMe over to iCloud and drop the "extra" services. I just can't remember if it was just a single cut off date or a series of dates. THAT email is stuck in my iCloud folders.

when I attempt to access the iTunes music store in the regular manner the program closes without any error messages, the icon remaining in the system tray until i scroll my mouse over it upon which it disappears - the program crashes outright -
i have e-mailed apple support and attempted to use all of their automatically generated solutions in solving this problem including -
upgrading (was never the issue i stay up-to-date generally)
checking my network and program access settings including firewalls etc.
    run the repair process
run the un-install re-install process of both itunes and quicktime
i've also tried re-calibrating the itunes library by deleting the appropriate files and having itunes re-determine the included files... nonetheless the problem remains
this is becoming immensely frustrating and to be frank, i work in the recording industry and for all the talk about apple support - i have been immensely frustrated by the lack of personal support whatsoever - i have received only automated responses regarding online documentation... as if i didn't spend horus trying to solve the problem before sending an e-mail at all.
please if anybody has any ideas i'm desperate to solve this.
    cheers
    elias

Your problem is the same one affecting countless iTunes users, including myself. There seems to be a common factor in that most if not all are using Windows XP Pro and I've noticed that the computer make, when listed, is a Dell. I have been through all the same Apple fixes, waited on hold for support for 1 1/2 hours just to be hung up on. I've had this issue for over a month and it has transcended both iTunes ver 6.0.4 and 6.0.5. Interesting thing, sometimes I get an error message telling me iTunes has to shut down and most of the time, the application closes unexpectantly and I have the same icon in the system tray till I hover my mouse over it. Frustration has turned to anger and a desire to find another product to get music into my and my 2 kids Ipods. I'll keep an eye on your post and let you know if I uncover anything as well.

  • What can you do when you see a white screen of death when you turn your computer on

My MacBook Pro had the color wheel rotating when I clicked on a link. It stopped and displayed a white screen. There was no way to force quit or do anything else, so I pressed the power button and turned it off. Since then, I have removed the battery and the cord, replaced them, and turned it back on. It does come on, but it displays the same white screen and nothing else. What is the problem?

Sounds like your hard drive died and the NVRAM got flushed.
You'll have to take it in and/or replace the drive and install your EFI firmware from cd to be able to install OS X back onto the machine.

  • Finder and iTunes stall when attempting to access ext. firewire HD

Since I upgraded to 10.4.10, the Finder, iTunes, and other apps that are attempting to access files on the external hard drive completely beachball/stall when waking the hard drive from sleep. Additionally, the dock and menu bar bork.
The only fix is to unplug the hard drive (without properly ejecting it!), and instantly, all the apps become responsive.
Anyone have information on this. My external hard drive, which contains my iTunes music and other files, has become virtually useless.

Same thing is happening to me.. Both at home on my Powerbook G4 and work on my G5.
Was working perfectly. Both systems running 10.4.10.
    Lacie 80gig FW400 drive.
Thinking it was the drive failing I promptly cloned it.
DiskWarrior and Disk Utility show no signs of error. I've reformatted, Zeroed all data many times. The drive 'appears' to be fine. I have copied my music back on to the drive; but it Hangs finder.
I've tried to re-import the music through iTunes to the drive. Again, gets about halfway and hangs finder.
Occasionally Disk Utility will return : "error could not unmount disk" when checking it out with Repair/Verify Sometimes it's fine.

thanks for the comprehensive info. i experienced this for the first time today. i bought my macbook the day they were released. the shutdown happenned for me after leaving my computer on overnight with no programs running. about two minutes into web browsing it shutdown. it then shutdown in the middle of restarts. i disattached power cord, external hard drive, dvd burner & ethernet & it powered up and has been working for about 20 minutes since.
this computer has really been a lemon. first my superdrive scratches the **** (just previewed this, i can't believe they sensor the h_ word?) out of discs, then the trackpad button becomes very hard to push. i've been working around those issues using an external dvd burner and mouse, but not sure how to work around sudden shutdowns. i haven't been able to send it in for repairs yet since i bought it cause i needed it's dvd authoring capabilities for a class i was taking, plus i wanted to make sure nothing else went wrong (self fulfilling prophecy?). i was planning on taking it on vacation with me, but guess i better pack my old ibook too (which other than a cd burner which sucked from the start, has been very reliable). i'll send in my macbook when i get back.
anyway, thanks for the info & advice! i'll back up my crucial data now.
