£99 to fix a fault

Back in 2006 a BT Engineer installed an ADSL filter faceplate to my master socket to resolve our issues with slow connection.  It worked OK until last night when we lost the broadband connection completely.
I was able to get my connection back by removing the faceplate and connecting the Home Hub via a microfilter.
I phoned BT this morning with the simple (so I thought) objective of obtaining a replacement faceplate.
The call centre operative insisted that the problem was with "my internal wiring" and told me to remove the faceplate and try to connect the Home Hub via a microfilter;  it took me a while to make him realise that I'd already done this.
When I'd finally got him to understand the situation, he announced that they couldn't send me a replacement faceplate - the whole socket would need to be replaced - and that that would be done at a price of £99.  I pointed out that that was a ludicrous amount to charge to repair a faulty item which would cost pennies - and which was BT's responsibility anyway.
He contended that the BT socket counted as "Internal wiring".  I said this wasn't the case: the socket was fitted by a BT engineer and it is the only socket in the house (there is no internal wiring running from the socket) - but he then seemed to change tack announced that this was a "one-off installation fee for the new socket".
So, it seems that I have to pay BT £99 to repair a faulty BT socket which was fitted by BT engineer - an for which I pay thirty quid a month (for a 2 megabit connection).
I can't believe that they can get away with this - do I really have to pay BT a hundred quid to for a minor repair to my BT socket?
Do OFCOM really allow them to get away with this?

Re the faceplate this is a comment made by a mod to me in March when I was having problems ( by email)
"Thanks for the update. The engineer made no mention of charges being applied in his notes and since the faceplate is still Openreach's responsibility I shouldn't think there will be any applied for this visit"
However I would point out that I had the entire socket replaced with a new in line one installed - in this respect it should be free as the wiring coming into my flat was exposed until the new socket was installed.
Does anyone know the exact criteria for where Openreach's responsibility ends as to me it is definitely up to and including the physical connection to the socket ie completely replacing a socket is Openreach's liabilty.
I was never billed for the socket by the way.

  • Over a week to fix a fault !

I reported a fault on our line last wednesday 11th July at midday - still waiting for the engineer to go out to fix the fault on the BT network ! I am so frustrated having initially reported the fault online and told I would hear something in 24 hours - nothing. When I phoned the fault no. on Friday 13th I was told that it would be fixed by 5pm today then the time on the fault tracking was changed to midnight today. On Monday morning we found out that our neighbour who is wheelchair bound, lives alone and has a panic button system through the telephone line, also has a fault. I reported it online and also phoned the fault no. and explained the urgency in this situation and the BT advisor said she would place it as a welfare issue and the line would be repaired in 24 hours - nothing has happened . Both lines are still out. We are the first number the helpline  call in an emergency . We cannot receive and he cannot call ! Where we live there is no mobile signal and this was also explained on the telephone conversations.
What I dont understand is that they have recognised the fault is in the network and they dont even have to send an engineer to the houses - apparently it can be done at the exchange so why the delay ?
I really want to complain over this whole scenario - does anyone know the best people/address to complain to outlining these issues ? The service has been appalling, the advisors make promises and dont deliver and 7 days is a ridiculous time to repair a BT network fault !
This afternoon I called again and gave an ultimatum that we must have both lines working tonight and was told a supervisor would call me back - surprise surprise - no call back ! An apology just doesnt cut it for all the frustration, hardship and worry in these circumstances that this has caused.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I should write to both Openreach and BT. I think you have to be in this customer position to understand the frustration when advisors say they will get back to you and dont bother and also initially online when they say you will have a response/ confirmation within 24 hours and dont bother or promise special welfare dispensation with fault corrected in 24 hours and dont do it! When we had huge power cuts due to last winters storms Scottish and Southern electricity were spot on, getting back in touch with customers and offering compensation ect. Common courtesy and excellent customer service when we were all in dire straits, no heating, cooking facilities etc. All polite caring advisors and the service made it  more bearable because they were keeping in touch and genuinely caring. The lies and the fobbing off I have had from the BT advisors is unbelievable and breeds discontent and unhappy customers. If anyone is here from BT please take note. Good customer service can salve customer frustration.

  • BT can actually fix broadband faults! (no I'm not ...

Just had to post this for anyone to read who have encountered problems with BT Broadband. Its been put onto an old thread but incase your new or never saw it here it is.
Anyone else seen the flying pigs all covered in snow?
It's finally happened, after 14 months, hours upon hours spent on the phone to Broadband No Support India Division, emails back and for with moderators and BT, 4 engineer visits and 3 emails to the chairmans office my broadbands been fixed. Yes thats right its not a mistype my broadband has actually been fixed.
I did try the noise line test as recomended by another forum member but I had no noise on the line.
After my last attempt to email the chairmans office (that and the short but blunt voicemail message I left too) I had a call from a new person who works in the chairmans office. This lady couldn't have been more helpful. She'd actually looked into my account and problems dating back to the day I joined BT Broadband back in January 2009 and was shocked to see some of the crazy and down right ridiculous things I'd been told and had to put up with. I was even more shocked when she knew exactly what an external NTE was. She listed to what I had to say and the long long list of what I'd tried over the 14 months and how even with 2 replacement hubs sent out nothing changed. She decided that from what I'd described it was a faulty hub issue. I have to admit when I was told this I was a bit apprehensive and wasn't expecting anything new to actually happen. Wrong!
Instead of just winging me out a new bog standard Type A Hub 2.0 she sent me out a new Hub 2.0 Type B. She explained how it was made by a different manufacturer and how it had a different chipset in it and that there had been customers who had found it solved there problems. I was dubious but I agreed to having one to try. 2 days later it arrived. Looks exactly the same as the 3 other hub 2.0 I have had in the past. I set it all up, switched it on and hey presto it burst into life. When it did burst into life there was no annoying loud clicking noise like with the Type A hubs. I logged into the Hub Manager and it appears to be more user friendly and pretty quick. For some unknown reason all previous Hubs upon connection would start with an Actual Data Transfer Speed of 100 odd mbps then almost immediately this would decrease down to 54 mpbs. Right away its showing as being 130mbps.
Tried logging back into Hub Manager later on and I was astonished to see that the Actual Data Transfer Speed was still showing as being 130mbps. Then I looked at the connection speed of all joined PCs, Laptop and Netbook to find they were all at 100mbps. This is something which had never been achieved before. Now I started thinking is this actually going to work? Yes, it did. Using the internet now is quicker than its ever been. My download speed has increased from approx 6mb up to a now steady 7mb and the upload speed is slightly quicker too. The lovely lady from the chairmans office rang back a few times to see how things were going and apologised everytime for the way my broadband problems and the support lines have been of no help/use. I told her under no way was I ever ringing India again and she said hopefully next year it'll all be back in the UK. (Fingers crossed folks)
Its now been 13days, 2 hours, 17 minutes & 51 seconds since switching to the Hub 2.0 Type B and I've had no flashing orange lights, no disconnections and none of those annoying 'Theres a problem with your broadband messages' appearing on my monitor. This is unheard of. If I'm lucky may go for a week without frequent disconnects (it did happen in summer 2009) but certainly no longer than that.
Its both great and disgusting at the same time. Yes its great that I now have the broadband service I've been paying for but disgusting that its taken 14 months to get it. That and the fact that despite all the bull excuses and comments on how its the phone line inside and its the electrical interference and that its a fault with all my PCs, laptops and netbooks etc that it is in fact down to that bloomin Hub!
Compensation is being looked into and should be forthcoming. I do not want to curse it but if these great speeds/transfer rates remain and I continue to be able to use my Broadband without that blasted constant clicking noise, flashing orange broadband light and frequent disconnections (deep breath) I may stay with BT.
Thanks to everyone whos suggested or commented on things to try.
No disrespect to the Mods on here but I did contact yourselves numerous times on the old BT Forums and got nowhere. The usual thing was to be told a line test had been done, no faults found now ring BT Broadband helpline. In my case no it wasn't a line fault it was rubbish BT Hubs 2.0 type A fault!
All I can recommend for anyone whos sick to the back teeth ringing India and getting nowhere with there broadband problems try using Google and searching for BT Chairmans email address and fire an email to them with details of your problems/experiences.
     Good Luck

nice 1,   i got my bb fixed today 2, after weeks of phone calls to india and 7 engieer visits and a letter to the chairman my bb its back up to 3.5 mbps,  the only strange thing is my bb light gos orange every 2 hours im hoping this is just like the 10 days restart and not still a falut im just glad my dsl connetion rate is back up was at 1000 but now 4689 pls look at my home hub stats tell we what u see pls x oh im using the home hub 2.0 type A

  • "Could not use the clone stamp tool because of a program error". How to fix this fault?

When I try to use the Clone Stamp Tool I am met with the message shown above. I have tried in all the ways I could find to beat this: different photos, switched the computer off and on again, run a de-bugging program through it (Advanced System Care 5 Pro) and Microsoft's own stuff. The problem exists solidly and, without one of its most important picture repair tools Photoshop is pretty much useless.
I have just set this new Photoshop Elements 10 program up on my Windows 7 (64) laptop. I have plenty of memory and a large enough hard drive; the machine is fairly new, stable and does not usually suffer from programming problems. I have found nothing on any of the Adobe Forums, or in other sites, to give me a hint as to what has caused the problem other than a bad program disk. My first conclusion was that I should reinstall the program, but it appears that I will then lose one of my two registration rights, that strikes me as being ridiculous as reinstallation is surely the most logical thing to do with a potentially faulty program disk! But I would have to uninstall to reinstall, and that's when the the second registration cuts in I am advised. I have tried every way I can think of to beat this to no avail. I'll be truly grateful if someone can help me out on this. Thank you!

Thanks guys! I'm afraid that I'm still not sure: I've been told that uninstalling - after of course deactivating - amounts to a life gone... Yet according to the set of licence rules Adobe has, you're allowed to copy programs in a mirror image which, of course, would be used for a clean wipe - and surely that contradicts their set of rules? The rules seem to imply that that would be okay: no life lost. My concern is that through no fault of my own I have what appears to be a duff program; it's out of warranty now (my fault - I didn't install it until I could buy a more heavy-duty laptop). If the rule is "two-strikes-and-your-out, then I lose my last reactivation after THIS installation. I will get in touch with Adobe - but I live in the UK, and therein lies the problem: the equivalent of $39 dollars for the chat and whatever else it might cost is off-putting to me I'm afraid. If I could find out whether or not Adobe has a patch or something I would be a lot more happy about it all - the reinstallation after all may NOT cure the problem and I'd be stuck with a bunch of coffee cup coasters! Hey, ho...

  • Is it fair to charge a new customer to fix a fault...

So im my case every night (currently happening atm) between 20:00 and 00:00 my download speed drops from 5.8mb to anything under 1mb, which in my opinion isnt my fault. Do you guys think its right to charge £130 for BT to get someone out to look into the fault, or are you in agreement with myself thinking this charge is slightly stupid unless BT can prove ive caused this fault. (which if you caused the fault then paying £130 is acceptible)
Id be interested in you're guys opinions.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I would wait a day or so for mod to get back to you.  also if you only have the master socket then apart from something electrial causing interference right next to it I can't see how you could be the cause of the problem.  especially the real question is how is your attenuation so high when exchange is with spitting distance

  • BT digging path to fix line fault - but Next door?...

    Hi
I made a post recently recently about how my internet and phone line have not been working.
I had an engineer visit today and he said the fault was under the path outside our property, and that he would organise for his colleague to come back and mark the path for the contractors to dig.
That's all fair enough so I went back to work. I came home to find the markings to dig are right outside next doors driveway, I wasn't notified about this, and nor were our neighbors. If they dig there, it will completely block access to our neighbors drive.
I've called BT, but the chap didn't speak very good English and basically said, they know what they're doing.
Is it normal for our phone line to not be working if the fault is next door? The last thing I want is for BT to dig up the wrong path.
The last time I had problems, the mods were infinitely better than the phone support. Can a mod please have a look into this and double check they marked the correct property?
    Thanks

This turned out to be bit of a nightmare really.
BT did dig up the path outside next door, only to find that my line was completely damaged to the point where everything needed to be replaced.
This meant the path, my garden and part of my drive (which BT said they would not do!! It looks terrible!!) had to be dug up just to replace this cable. It was not just a bit of the path either, a stretch of around 15-20 meters from outside my house to the house two doors down.
Lets just say my neighbours were not happy, the contractors made an horrific job of it and left it in a complete mess with mud and sand everywhere. I realise this wasn't exactly BT's fault exactly as their only contractors, but still, this is not good at all.
What makes it worse is that my internet is still absolutely terrible. It hasn't been long since the work has been done, and I realise that it should automatically rise in speed after so long, but if anything it's actually worse than before BT came and made a huge mess.
My line is estimated to get 65mb's down and around 15mb's up. It hasn't changed from that for around 48 hours, and is usually slower, should I not see a slight increase in that time?
If my IP profile for upload is saying 20mb's, should I not actually be getting this, or close to it as I know my line is capable of it.
Do I need my line resetting or something?

  • Re: BT can actually fix broadband faults! (no I'm ...

Can anyone tell me how I get in touch with this chariman's office? It's been years and I have tried writing to the 'managing director' but not had a response. My next step i think in any case is the only one open to me: sending a bill for compensation. Maybe that will get attention?
I also get the clicking noises, but the engineers have said they believe it to be the line. It is interesting that with us the outage and then throttling down to 100-150kbps (on a line capable of 2.1mbps) happens during inclement weather.
The worst part of the problem however is that when this happens it takes weeks to get anyone to the exchange to reset it.
However, one tip: try tweeting @btcare this got me a quicker response and got the engineers out last time without hours on the phone to India, even though it took me two weeks to find the @btcare tweet address.
What's the address, phone, email of the chairman's office please? And how do I find out if my hub is a type A or B?

  • No joy with getting fault fixed

I despair. I'm stuck in an endless loop with trying to get BT to get Openreach to fix the fault on my line which has been present since November.
I seem to get random responses from the call centre on 151 with no apparent ability to actually progress a resolution.
I've had a time to fix of "by the end of the day", 24 hours, 48 hours, 3 days, 5 days. The deadlines are always missed and calls not returned. I've also been cut off by the call centre multiple times
I've had "no fault", "fault assigned" " fault repaired" , "fault cleared" all in random order.
I depend on this line for my income and need it fixed. What can I do next to get past the useless call centre?
    thanks in advance

Sparrow is right.  But I have some more advice.
"I've had a time to fix of "by the end of the day", 24 hours, 48 hours, 3 days, 5 days. The deadlines are always missed and calls not returned."
What you are experiencing is BT Customer Service 101: lie to the Customer by telling them anything they want to hear to get them off the phone.  Normally the person won't update the account notes to even state that you called.
What you have to do is immediately after a Customer Service agent tells you something, call back and you will be connected to another agent.  Ask them what the status of your account is and what is being done - if they don't tell you the same thing as the other agent this means that the other agent lied and didn't even bother recording any account notes of the call (this is literally what happens 90% of the time).
This is basically how BT Customer Service works.  You just have to keep pounding and pounding and pounding away over a number of days.  Eventually you will reach the 1 Customer Service Agent out of 100 who will actually do something.
The mod's on here will respond (but only after a number of days).  You can also post to BT's Twitter and you'll get a response pretty quickly.
These are the only ways of getting anything done - the normal BT Complaint's process just sees your messages go a computer sitting in the middle of an empty warehouse and you will literally not get a response.  Good luck!

  • How to get BT to rewire my line, ongoing faults fo...

    Hi,
I am having constant ongoing troubles with my BT landline with horrendous crackling, noise and sounds like someone tuning an old radio on the line, it gets so bad i can no longer hear the other person i am calling!
Since moving in to the property 5 years ago, i have had various engineers out over the last 5 years including various SPI, broadband, internal and ground engineers, everytime they temp fix the problem doing something with the line connections at the green box or at the exchange, but the fault always re-appears 4-6 months later!
The last 2 engineer visits said i had a bad joint on it between my property and the green box!
I have called BT again last week and told them about the history and that the cable needs replacing to fix this ongoing fault permanantley as i had enough with it just being temp fixed all the time, BT said they would request the rewire in the notes and they would do the permanant fix this time, so a few days later they sent out the wrong engineer, who said he only delt with inside the property and the notes said that i could not receive incomming or outgoing calls i told him the history and that the last engineers had reported a bad joint, he ran some tests he said that yes the problem was again with the cable between my property and the green box, i said that BT had promised to re-wire this cable this time and he said i'll put it in the notes and will request a correct ground engineer to come out!
The next day the phone went dead for about half an hour and then received a text saying "we've fixed your fault", i knew they had just done a temp fix again, i checked the line which seemed noise free again, however the next day it was back the same, horrendous noise on the line, so i have had to call BT yet again as this is not fixed.
Please can someone help me as to what to do to get this damged cable re-wired once and for all, i feel like going to some other provider but will be left with the same fault over and over again, this is rediculous that BT will not supply me with a fault free line and get the thing rewired once and for all.
My infinity has also suffered as i use to get 73meg at first and it's now down to ~55meg and again feel i am paying for 80meg but getting just over the 40meg service.
    Please help

    Update...
I emailled a moderator as my broadband was still low and a mod has kindly replied and set the wheels in motion for a profile reset.
He arranged for an openreach engineer to come to my property this morning, the engineer came and did some line testing and found it to be still in a poor state, in fact he said the test results were catastrophic!
The engineer said he would have to pass it back again to a ground engineer and the line probably has water travel inside, the ground engineer should come Friday.
Profile reset will have to wait.
I really hope that this gets sorted once and for all this time.
    Thanks.

  • How to propagate a BPEL fault into ESB

    Hi
I have a problem with getting errors that occur in my BPEL process propagate up to the calling ESB service.
I have an ESB service that via a routing rule invokes a BPEL process.
I'm using direct Java-call (i think) between ESB and BPEL by simply choosing the BPEL process via the browser in the Routing Rule (BPELSystem/default/myBPELProcess/etc...). BPEL and ESB resides in the same container.
The BPEL process basically just inserts some data in the database using the DB adapter. If something goes wrong this this insert (unique key violation, etc) I would like the error to be propagated up to the ESB.
I have tried using both synchronous and asynchronous execution in my Routing Rule, and I have tried setting the Endpoint Property 'InvocationMode' to 'local'. I have also tried to set the property 'transaction' to 'participate' in the bpel.xml of my BPEL process. Nothing makes the fault in the BPEL process propagate up to my ESB service.
What do I have to do in order to achieve this? I would like this error to propagate up the the ESB so that I can retry BPEL process when the error is fixed.
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Kalle

    Hi Kalle,
which version of SOA Suite are you using?
Have a look to latest patchset (10.1.3.3 and patch 6723162 on metalink) - I guess there were some fixes for fault propragation.
    Hope this helps,
    Ivan

  • Lack of Communication and time taken to fix a faul...

I reported a fault with my telephone line on Friday 12th November using the online reporting facility. An engineer called round on Sunday and said it was not possible to fix the fault. Despite my regular emails, i have only had automatic replies. I have called BT twice (Monday and Friday) to try to find out what is happening. I was told on Friday that a second survey would be taking place and Tuesday 23rd to establish the cause of the problem.
I live in a rural area. We do not have mobile phone coverage where I live, and so I have to drive over a mile to park at the side of a country lane to call my father, who is elderly and very unwell. He is having to call me on my mobile, causing him extra expense.
I work in a school, and yet BT seem amazed to discover that I cannot sit at a phone for 15 minutes plus whilst they try to find answers for me and, despite saying they will email me, I have only received one response.
I now discover it could take over 6 weeks from the date of the second survey to make a repair. Great!! Daughter's birthday, Christmas, New Year and no way of contacting friends and family.
Sorry for the rant, but It is incredibly frustrating to not be receiving answers.

  • HT201412 App goes black screen upon loading, any suggestions to fix this?

I have just encountered a problem when trying to load an app on my iPhone 4, the screen just goes black upon launch and stays black, any suggestions to fix this fault?
