Broadband nowhere near estimated speed

Hi.
My estimated download speed is approx 17Mb (14.5Mb-19Mb Estimated download speed range), however for the last 6 months I've only ever been getting less than 10Mb. Its nowhere near what it used to be.

  • Upload speed nowhere near promised speed!

So I've got BT infinity 2 30mb/s. True, my download speed is 30mb/s. But my upload is 0.5mb/s. This is the same as my old internet which was 1mb/s. It hasn't changed! This is important as I host servers.

Presumably you want a higher upload? Can you find out your IP profile by running http://speedtest.btwholesale.com and doing the further diagnostics?
Are you using the Homehub? You could try bypassing that by setting up a PPPOE connection from your PC direct to the modem and seeing if your upload improves.
EwanC945 it would be very helpful for all of us if you could post the information that you get from the above speed testing system.
You are seeing an issue that a number of us have seen. I moved from standard BT Broadband up to Infinity with a Home Hub 3 and had a similiar issue - I was getting half of the throughput that I was expection and they had sent in the offer / contract letter. I had a major arguement with BT Retail but in the end I solved it  It did seem to be an issue with the Home Hub 3 not getting the correct parameters from the FTTC based equipment.

  • Infinty 1 estimated speed nowhere near reality

Recently "upgraded" to Infinity 1 with download speed estimated at beteen 22Mb & 32Mb.
Actual speed between 4.5MB and 5MB.  This is maximum we will get as advised by engineer on site visit after enquiry.
Do I have grounds to request a reduction in charge as this really isn't that much better than standard BB.
Okay, I live 1.5 miles from the cabinet but surely the estimated speeds should be a bit more accurate.

Take a look at my recent saga with an 'upgrade' to Infinity that not only didn't deliver the promised 13Mbps but was actually slower than the exisiting ADSL installation. I have been promised a contract termination & full refund after a number of weeks some toing & froing plus an engineer visiting & confirming what I had complained about on the day of installation.
    https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/New-Infinity-installation-is-slower-than-AD...
I had one idiotic response from BT customer support that 5Mbps was 'acceptable' - not to me it wasn't - not when I had been promised faster. I really hope that OFCOM is finally getting tough with ISPs over-promising & under-delivering. When you sign up there should be a guaranteed speed that is in the contract & if that is not achieved then it would be grounds for termination. As it is all the weael words about 'up to xxMbps' mean 'guaranteed never to exceed xxMbps'. It's like promising a salary of 'up to £100K' then paying only £20K.

  • Broadband speed half of estimated speed

    Hi,
Moved into a property 6 months ago and signed up to BT's Phone, Broadband and Vision services.  The rated speedrange at the premises is 3 - 8Mb, with an estimated speed of 5.5.  Since the line was installed I have never achieved a speed over 3mb and is usually in the region of 2.5Mb.  Now whilst this is ok based on the range quoted, it does not sit well with a BT Vision service as when an on demand service is being used web use is severely limited.
Before I complain to BT that the service is not fit for purpose, I would like to confirm if my line can actually achieve anything better to avoid the BT Vision QoS hogging the bandwidth.
I have spoken to BT first line support 3 times now and they have escalated the issue to Wholesale Services/Local exchange, which has not had any affect.
The premises has been fully rewired by a previous owner who has installed a phone socket in every room.  They have removed the BT Master socket, but every socket appears to be a LJU2 socket.
The wiring appears to be ok
I have performed a speed test directly to the socket closest the line entry point and this does not have a material impact.  however, as this is not a BT socket, I have not been able to test it free of the other extensions as I do not want to disturb the terminal pins.
I have tested with several different filters
I have tested with separate wireless routers, an older D-Link and current Netgear NDNG3300
Lastly, Broadband is terminated when a phone call is received or a call is made.
Given the last point, there may well be an issue internally, but before I purchased a punch down tool to test the master independently I wanted to see if there was any reason for the poor performance of the line.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
Had infinity option 2 installed this morning engineer on time so good in that sense. However the estimated speed quote was 62mb down 17 up. However I am only actually getting 24mb down. It's a bug difference from what was quoted, I am about 200-250m from the cabinet.
Not sure what could be te issue

  • BT Infinity, estimated speed?

Hi, (I don't have infinity, it sayd dec 31 on checker) what I was wondering was. On the checker it estimates that I will get speeds of around 50meg. What I wanted to know, is there a possibility that this could be 20meg? 30meg? 40meg? If it was a STEADY 20 meg after the 10 day period would this be fine? Or could there be a fault? If I never receive over 20meg could this indicate a fault? If it was like 20/22 this probablly would but if it was something like 20/4-8 could this indicate a fault or in some cases, is the estimated speed wrong?

    Ectophile wrote:
The absolute minimum for Infinity is about 15M; anything below that is definitely a fault.
Otherwise, the estimate is only an estimate, but you should get something close to it.  The type and condition of the line between your home at the cabinet can affect the speed, and this may not be detectable by the estimation system.
I don't think there's any simple formula that says what speed is good and what is a fault.
They should add estimations like on the ADSL, your connection shouldn't be less than X and cannot achieve greater than X. I also believe you can tell wheather your connection will be near from the ADSL due to the type of cable to your house, like if you achieve over the estimated speed on ADSL you will more than likely hit your estimate for Infinity.
As my estimate on ADSL was 2mbps, I achieved 3Mbps which shows that there is good cabling to my house I would imagine. On top of that my estimate for Infinity is 26.3 and I'm getting 12 which is unacceptable.

  • No increase in estimated speed

I'm looking at getting infinity but was suprised to find there was no increase in estimated speeds between infinity and infinity 2 is this often the case? The estimated speed is 30mb/s for both.

I understand about distance to cabinet and line quality. However and maybe this is where I'm going wrong, the same thing affected ADSL speeds (although this was distance to exchange). I expected that if the connection "lost" 25% of the speed because of distance and line quality then it would still only lose 25% of speed if you increased the maximum. Again just like ADSL you lost a certain % the long your line was.

I had Infinity 2 installed back in March. Originally the BT Broadband checker (http://www.dslchecker.bt.com) for my phone has consistently showed 80 down, 20 up. I get an IP profile of 77.44 down and consistently have speeds of 75Mbps over wifi.
Had a look today for a friend who lives next door to show her the BT Broadband checker, and the speed shown instead of being 80 down, is now

Anyone any idea why this should be? After telling her that I get and she should get 80Mbps (or almost) down. This shows for both mine and her phone numbers now.
Just checked and my IP profile hasn't budged from the 77.44 it has always been.......

Yeah, it's an estimate - it doesn't actually do anything!
They changed them recently across the board. I think it's based on the real-world data they are receiving now. Maybe they will go up next time...

People have said that they contacted Verizon and received signal boosters and I was wondering if anyone had knowledge of this?

        jslack73,
Thank you so much for those details. I do see that the area should have pretty good coverage. Since you have been at home have you been able to remove the sim card for a good 10-15 seconds http://vz.to/1ys6Uj0? Also, please try resetting the network settings on the phone. You can do that by going into Settings, General, Reset, and Reset Network Settings. After this is complete you would need to re-add in your wi-fi passwords. Please keep us posted.

  • Nowhere near speed estimated when applied for?

Hi I had infinity fitted yesterday, when i applied on line it stated that the line speed would be capable of 42meg,as of yesterday it was reading 20meg,I know that there is 3 days to let the line settle but it seems that it it is a very large difference between the two speeds! Will the line come upto the 36meg that the engineer said the line would be capable of,im about 150m from the green box at the end of my street.
    help please!!!

    Go to Solution.

On the second day you will normally see the highest speed your line can achieve, over the next few days it will lower it and get an error report then after the 10 days it will put you on a realistic IP profile from the data collected over the 10 days.

  • Airport Express with Time Capsule - Nowhere near 802.11n speeds!

I currently have a Time Capsule set up in bridge mode, giving me a wired+wireless network off my Belkin modem. I just bought an Airport Express to serve as a wireless bridge (to connect my wired PC to the network) but transferring files across the APE-TC connection goes at a woefully slow 3-4MB/s! (When I connect my 802.11n laptop to the TC directly via wireless, it was 3-4x faster.)
This problem happens whether the TC is set to either create a second discrete 5GHz network or not. I noticed that if I run this separate 5GHz network, and I connect the APE to the 2.4GHz one manually, the transfer speed slows to 1-2MB/s.
How do I get it to go faster? The APE and TC are only about 5m apart (+ 1 wall).

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +What to do?+
The iPhone does tend to remember the router that it is originally connected to.
If you plan to use the iPhone most of the time when you are in proximity of the AirPort Express, I suggest that you delete the current WiFi connection on the iPhone, restart the device, locate it near the AirPort Express, and set up a new connection to your network.
Works for me. May or may not work for you.

  • Random speeds, nowhere near ip profile.

As the title says we're getting completely random speeds, mainly at peak time, but not always. We could either get 8mb or a decent 65mb.
I've called support 3 times in total, first 2 times were apparently a fault at the exchange that were "sorted" lol, the last i was told they'll send an engineer which will cost £99 if they find a fault in the house which seems unlikely when we've achieved full speed.
The latest speedtest using bt whole sale -
Things i've tried so far, aside from calling BT "support": http://i41.tinypic.com/5wfqdj.png
    Speedtest results are laughable, 15-20mb..
Plugged in via modem with the homehub
    Trying different ethernet ports
Trying a very good spare router i have instead
Rebooting the Homehub(as advised by support)
    Rebooting Mode(as advised by support)
    Different Ethernet cables
Different speedtest mirrors just incase the ones i use were overloaded
When we first had Bt infinity installed we were on a stable 74mb for about 3 days, no disconections at all, no issues. Then it dropped to 66mb, fair enough not a big deal it's still ok but then it just went down hill to the point where i'd sooner be on ADSL for download stability. Upload normally sticks around the 17mb mark, but since rebooting the router/modem it's just gotten worse.
This is basically my last attempt at getting what we pay for, i heard it's a good idea to post on the forums or possible email an admin or something.
    thanks for any help

I was very interested to see your upload throughput on the sync rate of 20 Mbps. I have only had Infinity Option 2 since February 28th and have never got an upload throughput higher than 10 Mbps on a sync rate of 20 Mbps. I have complained to BT Retail and they have sent me a "deadlock letter" about my upstream throughput so I am currently discussing this with the Ombudsman.

  • Broadband dropping constantly, poor speeds, poor s...

Hi Can anyone help - I had a new line and hub in Dec 2009.  The broadband speed has never been brilliant but since Feb 2010 it has been awful.  It is so bad my email's don't load and nor does my home page.   5 out of 7 days I am unable to connect to the Internet the router will have a flashing amber light or a red light.  I have the Desktop Help which I use but usually it runs out of options.  There is only one (new) socket into the house.  The router is plugged into the "test" socket in the plug.  Nothing else is plugged in anywhere near the router.  I have emailed countless times to express my frustration.  I have spoken to two help desk people who ask the same questions and go through the same routine.  One said I did not have a BT account which was why I was having a problem.  An engineer phoned and said my speed was 4.2 and would improve "now" (!!??)   It hasn't and is often 2.5.  The main issue is that I am so often without any broadband at all.  For example this last week Monday at 1200 the router wasflashing amber and nothing would reset for 2hrs then using the Desktop Help and earthnet cable I was able to get back online.  Tues between 1730 - 1900 router was flashing amber then went red.  Thursday 0800 the unit flashing amber and I got a message  "Your hub cannot connect to broadband." Really??   Saturday 1020 I had connection but so slow I could not send emails and got Desktop message saying "Failed to load due to an internet connectivity problem.   I tried to get online this morning Sunday and had no service with the router flashing amber again.  I went out to save my sanity.  Came back - I could not reset until now at 1800.  The second UK person I spoke to was definite there was no problem with the broadband speed at 4.5 so could it be my router is faulty?  I am at my wits end.  BT do not give a **bleep** as I guess I am locked in for 18months due to a new line being put in.  I pay for a service and get decidedly limited service.  Does anyone know how to get their attention or better still reliable broadband.   By the way I live a two miles outside Chichester.  I have not been able to post this for 15mins due to "connectivity problems".
