Fresh install must include GB09?

Hi all,
I'm doing a fresh install of LS9 and it installs GarageBand '09 by default. What am I missing if I uncheck it to save some GBs?
Thanks a lot

Just found out I had to read the instructions more carefully

  • Cannot Fresh Install Mountain Lion on SSD

Hi I am new to macs and the first thing I want to do on my mac is install the Mac OSX onto my old SSD from my Windows machine. I have been having great difficulty so far! I created the mac osx dvd following the instructions here. I then took out my old HDD and put in the old SSD, I loaded up from the macosx dvd i created. I then erased the ssd drive as mac extended journal. I then installed the OS. It seemed to work, I loaded up mac osx mountain lion and logged in.
The only thing was that whatever you did on the screen made the spinning thinking wheel appear for far too long. Even opening the finder windows took a while.
I thought the fresh install must have gone funny so I just went through the process gain and tried to install mac osx again. Now I cannot even get the installer to finish! It just stops and says its failed. I have tried wiping the drive again and starting again but now every time the installer fails. Like the first time I tried to install it somehow left some damage or mess behind. Well I hope its not the SSD that is faulty I tested it by plugging it in to another computer with a hard drive docking thing. It seemed to read and write fine!?
I am very confused, could it be a dodgy dvd? I burned it and it seems to work fine, burned it straight from the download so could the download be corrupted?
Its a pain as they are dual layered DVDS and cost a fair amount! Its so frustrating as its my new mac and I just want to get it up and running and do some editing I thought it would all run smoothly, what with it being Mac and all.. :-(
Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

Hmm... it seems as if you went through the correct procedures... here's what I'd do, though...
Buy an inexpensive enclosure for your 'old' hard drive (OWC is a good source) and keep the SSD installed in your MBP. Boot from the 'old' drive.
Use Disk Utility to reformat the SSD - format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to the SSD. You'll have the option of creating the Recovery partition - do so.
Beofre rebooting, choose the SSD as your Startup Disk under System Preferences. Then reboot. You should boot into your (speedy) SSD now.
Let me know if this doesn't work.
    Clinton
BTW: I prefer creating a USB flash drive (8GB+) as a bootable installaton drive rather than a DVD. I've made quite a few of them using Lion DiskMaker (similar process that you describe - just automated).

  • Why is Mavericks running so slowly after a fresh install on my Macbook Pro?

    I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 Macbook Pro.
Towards the end of 2013 Mountain Lion had been running very sluggishly, and I was getting the spinning beachball of death all the time, so I decided to do a fresh install of Mavericks. I wiped my whole HD using disk utility and installed Mavericks from a flash drive.
I then installed Microsoft Office 2011 from the original DVD and set up Mac Mail to work with my Gmail account etc. All very standard. I also installed X-Code and various other things related to my work, but nothing crazy. My HD is only half-full (I have 141 GB of free space).
Despite this, everything is running really sluggishly (especially when MS Office programs are open) and I have to watch the beachball of death spin for about 10 seconds every minute.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Satellite L655 - Sound not working on fresh install of Windows 7 Pro x64

    Howdy all,
I purchased an L655-S5111 from Newegg that was on sale, put an SSD into it, and then installed a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit I received from my current employer (I'm an IT guy). I've updated to the latest BIOS revision (1.70), and I've got all Windows updates installed, all drivers installed, including the correct Conexant HD Audio and ATI HDMI Audio drivers. Unfortunately, sound does not work. Sound worked briefly when I first installed Windows 7, then I muted it until I could get it set up with headphones. When I unmuted it, it had ceased to work.
This laptop is less than 3 weeks old at this point, and I get no audio over headphones or speakers, although Windows clearly shows no issues with the drivers, they're the latest version, on a fresh install, and I can see the audio in the mixer playing. The microphone built-in to the laptop does pick up sound as well. I believe that this is most likely not an issue of physical interconnection, but more likely a software level issue, I'm just having trouble identifying where it is at.
I also have no related error messages anywhere in the event logs.

    1) I didn't get a copy of the recovery media with the system
    2) The recovery media would install Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit which is what came with the laptop.
Since I have legitimately licensed copies of Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise 64-bit, I would much rather install that. Since I used the drivers and software from the Toshiba website for this particular model, it should be working. There should be no functional difference between the recovery media and a fresh Windows install from the Microsoft-provided Windows media and Toshiba provided drivers from their website.
As you can see in the sysinfo (I'm assuming Keany the respondent is the admin that approved my post and edited it, thus had access to the data which was removed) I have all the Toshiba software and drivers installed, identically to if this was the recovery image, I just have it on a different edition of Windows 7.
I'm open to any other suggestions, but unfortunately it is not possible to do the above.

  • Yosemite fresh install - an idea I am trying

I Upgraded Yosemite on my MBAIR mid 2013 and Al has worked. I did this as an early adopter the moment it appeared on the App Store.
HOwever ver it does seem slow and dropbox has Ben malfunctioning for three months despite copious support. Other things don't seem right either, like there is a an unfriendly ghost in the machine. So I google that a fresh install while not required may be desirable.
I Find that like all things tech mostly it works and sometimes it does not: other threads on here confirm this; extremes of experience good and bad.
I Have these same experiences. Including time machine backups that even a Genius cannot fix. You can imagine my reaction after al the exhortations to backup to/with time machine. Apparently one faulty folder meant the entire backup was lost.
I have too many tears and years of experience really still to use technology.
So the challenge is how to create a fresh install, to add all my setup, vast number of apps, test it and without resorting to time machine backups ( of which I have FOUR, two external disks and two NAS drives ) plus drop box and additional NAS drive sync (synology drives x 2 about 50 terabytes as one backs up the other) - imagine losing your NAS drive, regret drive two is not offsite, though in a different room)
I Am not convinced my dropbox is accurate nor my NAS sync: one reason for the fresh install.
SOlution I have "in play" is this and interested to hear guidance from experience:
UsB drive, erased with single write of zeroes, partitioned to journaled mac format. Partition about 650gb for MBAIR has 500gB SSD OEM.
Rstart MBAIR pressing command R , follow process choosing EXTERNAL drive to install Yosemite
and after overnight wait for the disk prep process zeroing, now at the point of having installed and asking for my applied. Do I give it or keep it 100% clean while I check the basic install works...... I elect for no sign in..... I want to know if the USB based system works and can reboot. Restarting... I altered password so I can tell which system I have booted from... 70 seconds to the password box....5 seconds from password to main screen...
SO now what? Install apps? So many. The ones I forget will plague me for days or weeks. Or transfer from time machine like its a new machine?
TTime to post this and see if anyone is around with some experience
AApologies for the typing, my iPad is not behaving ideally...

can't edit the above and my ipad would not allow any responses to the post edit dialogues so to continue with what I hope does not become an epic
my name is anthony, please ignore the handle (old long story - maybe one day I can easily fix it)
my first choice was to load mail.app enter my apple i.d., then system prefs icloud and tick the keychain box. There followed repetitive "certificates do not match - choose trust all, around 30 times over once for each email account (I have many). Also enter system password, note to self next time make system password blank for install process. Doing this now for the rest of the process. Yes I am sure (response to a prompt)
So, email has re-installed all (?) of my email accounts with settings (thanks to icloud methinks) saving a huge amount of time compared to past re-installs (thank you icloud) and downloaded 42,000 messages (nearly all imap so as to sync across devices) - I feel a degree of relief already and do not feel that terrible stress feeling when all I have is a backup and no original working system (which is of course still on the MBA's SSD).
When asked about time machine targets: ignore/cancel so as not to interfere with original MBA backups.
Next (concurrently in fact) install Chrome to get back all my bookmarks (thousands). I occasionally try Safari, but struggle because of my time investment in Chrome and it doesn't integrate, imports are not at all the same thing.)
So let's try a restart and compare the timings. ... this is without any apps being reinstalled (as opposed to browser)...

  • Fresh Install of Mountain Lion how do I export users from Lion Server

I've been having some issues with Lion Server, mainly Kerberos related and Profile Manager. So I want to start fresh with Mountain Lion.
I've installed ML and Server, and profile manager is working now for the first time (yay!)
Now I want to Import all my existing Open Directory users from Lion, I don't want to Import the entire OD though because I think some of my kerberos issues will just get carried over to ML.
I would like to just export the Users to a file then use ML server to import users from file, but I can't see an option to export in Lion Server, I have tried doing it from WGM on Lion but the 'users' file is not recognised by ML server

Great thanks for the reply, I'll try it tonight when everyone has logged off.
Yeah I was very pleased initially with kerberos on Lion, it worked great to start with, now I'm just getting expired tickets for a default realm when some users log in, yet other users continue to work fine.
I was planning to slowly install Mountain Lion Server and test is thouroghly but I've had a bit of a disaster that if forcing me to go live with ML server quicker than I wanted to!
Basically because on Lion Server I have all the Service Data on a separate drive, and I upgraded to ML server on a backup copy of Lion Server just to see what it was like, though now I've rebooted the original Lion drive but half of the services are now screwwed up because the ML Server must have changed them, so things like Wiki Server and Profile Manager are now broken from the Lion Server boot, they just show "Error Reading Settings"
I realise now I should have moved the Service data back to the local drive before doing a test upgrade so I wouldn't have messed it up! but now it seems like my best way forward is a fresh install of ML Server

  • Server 2012 fresh install - Running at a crawl. Possible hardware issue?

    Hello All,
I have recently purchased a used server and just fresh installed Server 2012 to evaluate it, and I am experiencing a issue with it running very slow.   So far nothing has been setup or installed besides the OS, hard drives, and a external usb drive,
so it is pushing me to believe my issue is hardware related.
First let me describe the issue more.   Basically everything is slow to load.  Control panel takes 20 seconds...  trying to load disk management and other snap in from administrative tools all take 15-20secs+ and first come up in
a greyed out window or the administrative tools window goes to "Not Responding" for a few seconds then loads it.
I do not think it is due to the fact the server is used with slightly dated hardware as it has Dual Quad-Core 2.66 Xeons & 16gb ECC Ram, so I was thinking their must be a bad piece of hardware in there?  Maybe bad ram?
Anyway I plan to start hardware diagnostics, but I just wanted to see if anyone had any insight or suggestions for me.  And to verify if this sounds like a hardware issue to you as well.
    Thanks!

Windows 2008 R2 that is on top of the list of supported operating systems. It is a good choice for some testing with M350 G5. Then you can test the in-place upgrade and application compatibility test will tell you, which component makes the problem.
If for example onboard NIC is not compatible, then you can use another NIC card that is compatible. When it is RAID controller (very often), then either use another RAID or single HDD (it is test only, not for production environment).
You can explore the virtualization path. Get know if appropriate hypervisor from VMvare is compatible with this hardware is also compatible with Windows Server 2012 R2. VMware forum may answer your question on virtualization. Working in virtual environment
    will provide some experience too.
Majority of current desktop equipment allows you for testing Windows Server 2012 R2. There are some exceptions, namely "high end game machines" that make you to find remedy for drivers (example
MAXIMUS IV GENE-Z - here is a need to adapt inf file for NIC, because of there is low end NIC on motherboard.)
For low performance issues use native tools like Performace Monitor and diagnostics - Event logs and Device Manager. For detailed analysis consider Sysinternals tools.

  • Fresh Install Windows 7 x64 IE 9 Flash Player Crash

    Greetings All,
I am working on a major imaging prject for my organization.  I'm getting ready to create a new image for some of our machines so I was getting the reference computers ready.  I have noticed that when flash player is enabled in IE 9 it crashes the browser.  I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error.  I can click the close program button, IE will try to launch the same page again and i get the error again with a bar on the bottome of the IE window stating "A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab".  After a few rounds of this I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website."  This is occuring on two different machines that I have been preping.
Here are the details of what I have done to these machines:  (Dell E6420 and Dell E6320)
    1.  Installed Windows 7 x64 from install media (blanked the drive so fresh install)
    2.  Installed SEP 11.0.6200.754
    3.  Installed all drivers fresh off of Dell's website.
    4.  Installed Office 2010.
    5.  Ran and updated EVERYTHING from MICROSOFT update, SP1 and IE 9 included.
    6.  Went to Adobe.com and installed the latest Acrobat, Flash, and Shockwave Player from the links on the main page.
    7.  Rebooted and now anytime I go to any page with Flash objects I get the above error.
    Here are version:
    Windows 7 x64 SP1
    IE 9.0.8112.16421
Shockwave Flash Object (Enabled in Manage Add-ons) 10.2.159.1
As said these are two brand new machines, two fresh loads, two batches of software fresh from the web, and two machines having unacceptable problems when Flash is installed.  What's up here?
    Many Thanks for your time!

I’m going to take a moment and do two things, bump the thread, and provide a short synopsis on where we stand on this issue.
After much trial and error and the help of Chris I can say with relative certainty that this is an issue with compatibility between nVidia’s Optimus systems and Flash player’s hardware acceleration feature.  I don’t know if the issue is just IE9 or IE8.  I haven’t taken the time to try this on an Optimus system with IE 8 yet.  If someone out there is running one of the Optimus enabled laptops with IE8 and the latest flash installed I would love to hear some feed back.
Ultimately IE8 vs. IE9 is an inconsequential issue.  Soon Microsoft will start pushing IE 9 as an important update meaning that the problem will need to be fixed or we’ll be faced with more users having the problem.
I have posted about the issue in the nVidia forums, Dell forums, and Adobe forums.  Please find the links to the threads below.  I don’t believe the issue to be unique to just the two Dell models that I am dealing with.  I have run across numerous complaints along this line from several different OEMs.

  • Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 on HP Pavilion a4313w freezes randomly

I've done four fresh installs of Windows 8.1 on the HP Pavilion a4313 Desktop PC in our home and it always freezes randomly. Even in safe mode, it freezes. I've done hardware tests with BurnIn Test 8.0 and everything including the hardware memory is fine. Antivirus is installed and it's completely updated with Windows Updates. Once I installed the 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 and it still froze. I performed a fresh install, because it would hang sometimes with Windows 7.
Anyways, I am more then ready and willing to post more information or test results upon request. Anyone have suggestions?

    Hello @buddhapunk36,
I understand that your computer running Windows 8.1 keeps freezing and you have run the hardware tests and it comes back okay. I would suggest that you try installing the original Windows 7 that came with your computer and see if the freezing continues. If it does continue the the issue appears to be a physical issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html.
If the issue does not continue then your system may not be compatible with Windows 8.1.
I would like to thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Should I upgrade my iphoto panther to Leopard or export and fresh install?

My Panther iphoto library got corrupted some how and I had to create a new library. I did not like this because it changed all the order of my photos and I could not organize them the way they were. I still have the corrupted library on my hard drive. I never deleted it for fear that I did not get all of my photos onto the new library. I think I pretty much did but not for sure. The dates that I imported the original library pics were all correct. Now that I had to redo the library half the dates are wrong because it's going by the created dates on the photos instead of the day they were imported. It's all very confusing to me.
Anyway.....now, I just purchased a copy of Leopard. I was thinking of doing a fresh install instead of upgrading my g4 in hopes that I would start with a clean slate. Only problem is trying to back up all those photos and then reimporting them. Do you guys think I should not mess with it or buy a firewire external hard drive, export or back up my files, do a fresh install and then re-import? One of the reasons I also want to start fresh is because my daughter went in and started deleting a bunch of folders she did not think she needed and I had to get thousands of files out of the trash. I don't know if I put everything back into the correct place. Come to think of it. My itunes library was corrupted as well and I had to create another one of those. So I have 4 libraries of music and photos filling up my 120 gig hard drive. Sounds like a good time for a fresh install upgrade right???
    Tim

Anyway.....now, I just purchased a copy of Leopard.
iPhoto '08 is not included on the Leopard upgrade - it is on the iLife '08 upgrade (a separate purchase from the OS)
And upgrading the software will not fix a corrupted library - you need to have a good clean working library before you upgrade iPhoto

  • Can we take UCCX7.0 Backup and to Restore on fresh install of UCCX8.5(1)

                       Hi there,
We are doing fresh install of UCCX8.5(1) on Virtual Server ESXi 4.1. Currently client is running UCCX 7.0 on physical servers not VM as well as Call Manager.  Can i backup the existing data including historic reporting and restore on UCCX8.5(1) as it is on ESXi 4.1 server. As PUT did not help as Call Manager is also on ESXi 4.1 virtual server, PUT did not give any option to point to new Call Manager.
Any easy way please send me step y step or detail doc. Thanks

    Hi Hafiz,
Backup and Restore works only when you maintain the sam ip address and the same version.
As part of the UCCX upgrade you can not point it to new CUCM ip.
But on the existing UCCX 7.x system you can perform the Change CUCM cluster operation to point it to new CUCM ip,
You can refer the section "Modifying Cluster Information from Unified CCX"  from page 71 onwards in the below link,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_7_0/configuration/guide/uccx70ag.pdf
Make sure that the CUCM and UCCX versions are compatible to make the calls go through.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cust_contact/contact_center/crs/express_compatibility/matrix/crscomtx.pdf
Once this operation is successful you can do the UCCX upgrade using the windows to Linux upgrade method.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I Bring iTunes Up-to-Date on Fresh Install of Leopard?

I have created a new, vanilla image of Leopard on a partition of an external HD to be run on my 6 year old iBook. I did this fresh install so I could essentially start over and only use what I really need on this aging, but still functional Mac. I am still running the old Leopard installation on this same machine. Once I get this Leopard, pure version, to where I want it, I will restore it to my iBook using SuperDuper.
Everything is pretty much where I want it except that when I try to sync my iPhone through iTunes, no backup occurs. This is understandable since the iTunes on this Leopard - Pure image has a fresh copy of iTunes on it. I thought it might backup whatever was there, but that is apparently not the case. I have turned all the other syncing functions off so what is on the iPhone now won't be erased due to the fact that that content doesn't exist in this version of iTunes. The only other thing of any significance in iTunes are my podcasts, which I can easily replicate. My music is on an external drive.
My question is, how do I go about getting iTunes to back-up my iPhone? Do I have to bring over the old version of iTunes somehow? That looks awfully complicated. I have looked and I can't do it using Migration Assistant just for iTunes. Without the backup I might very well loose my apps on the iPhone as well. What are my options at this point?
I know people have done upgrades starting essentially from scratch, so there must be a relatively simple way to do this. Am I missing something? I suppose that when the next update to iOS comes out, iTunes will recognize that what is one my iPhone is not current and the new version will download and everything can go forward at that point, but I'd like to get this working so I can use this image before then. I welcome your suggestions and comments.
    -Bill

The problem has been resolved. It didn't have anything to do with the 10.5.8 Combo Updater, which I did use when doing the Upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard. It may have had more to do with upgrading iPhoto from version 6 to version 9, though I tend to doubt that. In any event when I did select some albums to sync with my iPhone, the iPhone back-up step did precede the sync, so everything is working as desired. Perhaps I just needed to make another run at it.

  • Please help with a few drivers for z60m after fresh install

I got a bad virus(several actually) that I could not eradicate. I was advised to just wipe and reinstall the OS since it is not under warranty anymore. I could not find the recovery disk, must have been lost inthe last military move could not find a replacement recovery disk at the IBM website so  I went out and bought an xpprof OS thinking it should not be that hard to find any drivers XP does not provide . I had no problems doing that on our acer laptop and a friends HP laptop before so was pretty confident.. Boy was I wrong this has been the reinstall from hell. I reinstalled the audiodrivers from theIBM website but the speakers still don't work. The laptop will not recognize the wireless, even after installing the drivers for that and I can't find anything out about why the dock does not work, I assume there are drivers for that too. I also have 4 ugly yellow question marks that I can't seem to get rid of in device manager.  At this point I am already out the price of XP Prof but I really need this laptop my husband took the acer laptop when he deployed to Afghanistan, only because I was confident I could get this one fully functional.  I see now my self confidence was badly misplaced ,even though I am working on a degree in computer technology this laptop is kicking my tush.
Is there anyone that could help please
    1. help me find why my speakers still dont work even though they are recognized as soundmax in device manager
I found several references to this issue in the forums but there does not seem to be a resolution
    2. help me figure out why my laptop suddenly (after the fresh install)does not know it even has a wireless capability even after numerous attempts at installing the driver(driver seems to install just finebut upon reboot there is still no wireless available
    3. figure out how I can get my dock to work again
the laptop has always worked great til now and all these things were functional before the virus and reinstall of the OS)
    4.  get rid of ugly yellow exclamation points under Other Devices, I am sure they must be important( I am sure at least one or more of them has to do with the wireless)
sorry this is so long Im  just frustrated thanks so much for anyone that can give some guidance on this

    hanaleia, welcome to the forum,
download and install ThinkVantage System Update, it should get the drivers for you. Please ensure you read down the site as you may need to install a patch for XP SP2.
Let us know how you get on.

  • Rolling my own kernel off a fresh install

    Hey folks!
I just recently acquired an Acer Aspire One. In a vain effort to get the wireless working off of a fresh install I thought that I might compile my own kernel version 2.6.27 (and I hoped that the ath5k driver would automagically work). Sadly I ran into some issues, and owing to my ignorance of Linux kernel compiling magic I have posted here to the Newbie forum:
So I get to the point where I need to install the kernel (after compiling from source), but I lack the program mkinitrd. I did some research and apparently we use mkinitramfs, which the fresh install also doesn't come with.
    My questions are thus:
    1) Is it possible to make an initrd on a computer which the initrd is NOT intended for?
    2) Why is it that a fresh install doesn't come with the stuff required to recompile a kernel, I would think that might be important?
I am thankful for any help!

    Hey awesome, this looks good.
If a package is included in the "Core" repository, does that mean it comes rolled up with the Arch install?
    EDIT:
I see now that this is the case. From the Official Arch Linux Install Guide:
The core iso (~300MB) is a live environment which contains a snapshot of the entire /core repository. Packages are divided into 4 categories: BASE, SUPPORT, DEVEL and LIB. RAID/LVM are fully supported; all necessary packages are included within /core. Installing from a medium created with this image results in a completely functional GNU/Linux system, without any frills, expecting to be used from the command line; the Linux kernel, GNU toolchain and a few extra modules and libraries. This image is ideally suited for those who have a rather slow or nonexistent internet connection on the candidate machine, making an FTP install unfeasible. The name of the iso will be "archlinux-i686-2008.xx-x.core.iso", according to your architecture

  • Fresh Install of Mtn Lion on new SSD More Difficult Than I Thought

Today I installed my brand new 512GB SSD from Crucial. Had wanted a fresh install of Mtn Lion, but that turned out to be difficult. As a result, I resorted to a restore of my most recent Time Machine backup, which completed just fine.
Changing out the drives was simple and quick. I then inserted my formatted USB Drive, held down the Option key, and re-started my laptop. So far so good, and I was asked which drive I wanted to install Mtn Lion on, but the problem was that my new SSD was not listed as one of the options, so I took out the new drive and re-inserted my old SSD.
When I ordered the new drive, I ordered the one that came with a Data Recovery Kit, which included a CD and a nifty little adapter that attached to your drive, with a short USB cable on the other end. I attached the adapter to the new drive, plugged in the USB end, and then opened Disk Utility. I then realized that the new drive was never formatted, so I thought I had found the problem as to why the new drive never showed as an option when I wanted to install a fresh copy of Mtn Lion. I quickly reformatted the new drive, then re-installed it in my laptop, then re-started and held down the option key. Still, the new drive was not showing as an option to install Mtn Lion.
However, it did show as an option if I chose to install a Time Machine backup, so that is what I did, and the restore process was quick and effortless. In the end, I have a new 512 GB SSD and am happily continuing with my computing. Still, I have to wonder why the new drive was never available to me as a destination option for a fresh install of OSX 10.8.2.
Any ideas if I missed something along the way? Why did the new SSD not show as an option for a fresh install?

    Drive Preparation for Lion
    1.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select the SSD (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is done quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
