Is my Homehub 3 faulty?

I have recently purchased two iPad mini's for family members, however I cannot keep sustained connection on the iPads whilst using data intensive intensive applications for example  streaming on lovefilm instant's application (when I run speed tests I am getting around 30mb download, and 16mb upload). However all other devices seem to work perfectly with the homehub and have done since my installation of infinity two in september. Despite this the reason I am questioning the status of my homehub is because about three days (22nd Dec 2012) before using the iPads on the Wifi for the first time the internet seemed to slow and it often took a long time to open pages and often needed page refreshes (could this be because down to the busy christmas period?), now though (26th Dec 2012) it seems to have cleared up but could there be an underlying issue with my homehub or connection, or is it just two faulty iPads?.
Kind Regards,
Sean Gomes
I am also willing to post diagnostic information and router settings if it would aid this process it is just I am not sure what information is needed- if asked for I will provide it.

What would you classify as intensive streaming bandwidth wise, also what are the the Homehub's limits on being overloaded, basically what can it cope with? Sorry for the wording it's just I have never encountered this with any previous routers.
Edit: There are other devices connected at the same time but they are just idle- connected not doing any streaming etc. These devices are: HTC One (Phone), Google Nexus 7 (Tablet), 2x Blackberry (Phones) and an iMac. Could just the presence of these devices be "overloading" the wireless?

I'm responsible for 3 separate BT broadband accounts at three different addresses in 3 parts of the country. I've recently "upgraded" all 3 routers to BT HomeHub4. Subsquently, there has been a dramatic FALL in download speeds at all 3 locations.  Can't be a coincidence!
The falls have been from 14 to 7; from 11 to 7; and from 6 to 4.
Are the new HomeHubs faulty, or is BT throttling them - perhaps to push us into ordering Infinity?
Unless things improve, I shall have to consider switching supplier, after a lifetime with BT.
    All suggestions welcome.

the probability of all 3 hubs being faulty is extrememly remote and BT do not throttle the conenctions apart from p2p and then only on contracts prior to feb 2013

  • Homehub 2 Faulty?????

Hi I have a BT homehub 2 and for the last few days keeps re-setting and since this started the wireless side of things as gone into meltdown. When its working I can get online via Ethernet fine, but each time any computer/laptop etc is turned off/on I have major problems trying to get connected. I run the help but no good then suddenly all goes to plan. I do think the hub is on its way out. Try sorting this out with the people on the other end of the phone whata laugh that is. I am to be honest sick to the back teeth of BT this will be hub 3 and to me its just not good enough at all. A poor service at an expensive price.

    NOT HAPPY

There's no need to change the wireless security to WEP. For a start, WPA is a more sturdy form of security and harder to crack for any wannabe hackers. If you can't get connected wirelessly then changing the wireless channel would be the first thing to try. The best wireless channel to try, I find, is 6,7, 11 and on the Hub2 channel 10 sometimes works best too. You can find out how to change the wireless channels from the BTCare Channel on YouTube. Type BTCare Channel in to the search bar on www.YouTube.com and look for the video on the right hand side.
The suggestion of trying a Hard reset by using a pin in the side of the hub, where it says Reset to Defaults, is a good idea though. Try this and see if th problems stop. Also you need to make sure the Hub is plugged into the Master socket and all other telephone sockets that are in use in your house have a microfilter connected. If the connection is dropping and you're connected to an extension socket in the house, it may be the extension causing the problem.
One other thing it might be is a faulty microfilter. If you have any spare, try changing the one the hub is connected to, but I would still try the Master Socket first.
If your sick of talking to the Offshore agents, consider email BT rather than phoning. Your email will be picked up by someone in the UK and should be answered witihin 48/72 hours.

  • Faulty BT Homehub 5 - my experience

Hopefully this might help others as I found it very difficult to find anything quite like our situation and I needed basic guidance.  I had a new master socket with inbuilt splitter fitted for BT Infinity (apparently its very new to have the inbuilt splitter and took us a while to work that out - its distinguished by having both a phone and broadband point rather than just one point).
Last week I found my new BT homehub 5 which had been in use for about one month had stopped working and nothing was able to revive it.  As we had been sent the HH5 free and were out of contract, we had to either pay for a replacement or commit to another 12 month contract - that was the choice presented to me.  I also discovered that there was a contract for the existing HH that I was not aware of.  As my view on how this has all been handled will comprise a complaint I won't go into this here.
We attempted to set up an alternative router but it was so confusing - we discovered we needed a router modem (not just a router) as well as a BT openreach modem for it to work but it does work - hurray!  And better than the HH5.  So don't feel forced into paying for one or locking into a contract if this happens to you.

Does the bridge have a web interface where you can access its settings? Is that web interface on the same subnet as the home hub?
All you are using in effect, is a wireless client, bu I think you may find that it may have its own internal LAN IP address, which is different from the home hub.
Its worth checking, because I know if you use a TP-Link WA701ND in the wireless client mode, its IP address has to be on the same subnet as the home hub, otherwise it will not pass on DHCP requests from connected devices, to the home hub.

  • Homehub reset itself - faulty?

    Hello,
Just 5 minutes ago I was on my computer when I heard my hub go "Click" (as it normally does when I manually reset it) and I turned around to see why it clicked and all the lights were off,  the hub had gone into a full reset all by itself.
Was there an update or something just now that made my hub do that? or could my hub be faulty?.
In the 2 years ive had it ive never seen it reset itself before :\

    Dear all,
hold my hands up. It appears that a backup process of which I knew nothing about was the main cause of my day to day service degradation.
It ran ~12 pm and this is when I start to see my broadband speed degrade. I have now for the time being, my level of service is now as it should be.
I really appreciate help provided by this forum its very good turnaround time.
1 q though I raised a help call as directed however I want to cancel this, for now, as my level of service is now great and was found to most likely be system issues locally
    Thanks

  • Faulty Router Homehub 3

Hi, for months now it router just crashes, no devices can connect or get an internet connection, even local media streaming stops, then upon reboot  it will work for a few minutes then it crashes again i have to repeat this process for about an hour then it might work for an hour or 2 and same thing again might get a few more hours out of it, in the morning it can last for a few hours until i have to repeat the whole proccess again, i spoke to a guy on the phone he just fobbed me off with "you cant have more than 5 devices connected at a time" is there a way i can request a replacement router on here with out having to ring someone and go through there play book for half an hour get passed to someone else and go through the playbook again.

  • Question regarding homehub and Open reach router -...

    Hi all,
I had infinity installed earlier this month and am happy with it so far. I do have a few questions regarding the service and hardware though.
I run both my BT openreach router and BT Home hub from the same power socket. The problem is, if I turn the plug on so both the Homehub and Openreach Router start up at the same time, the home hub will never get an Internet connection from the router. To solve this I have to turn the BT home hub on first and leave it for a minute, then start the router up and it all works fine. I'm just curious if this is the norm or do I have some faulty hardware?
Secondly, I appreciate the estimated speed BT quote isn't always accurate, I was quoted 49mbits down but received 38mbits down - Which I was happy with. Recently though it has dropped to 30. I am worried this might continue to drop over time. and as of present I am 20mbits down on the estimate . For the record 30mbits is actually fine and probably more than I would ever need. If I could boost it some how though I would be interested to hear from you.
    Thanks, .

Just a clarification: the two boxes are the HomeHub (router, black) and the modem (white).  The HomeHub has its own power switch, the modem doesn't.
There is something wrong if the HomeHub needs to be turned on before the modem.  As others have said, in general best to leave the modem on all the time.  You should be able to connect them up in any order, or together.  (For example, I recently tripped the mains cutout, and when I restored power the modem and HomeHub went on together and everything was ok).
Check if the router can connect/disconnect from the broadband using the web interface.  Leaving the modem and HomeHub on all the time, go to http://192.168.1.254/ on a browser on a connected computer, and see whether the Connect/Disconnect button works.

  • Airport Express and BT Homehub - how can I get it to work?

    Hello, can someone help??
I have an Airport Express and a MacBook. My only use for my Airport Express is purely to play ITunes music through my stereo via my MacBook wirelessly. Therefore I only require my Airport Express to join my current network.
I recently changed my phone and broadband network provider from Talk Talk back to BT. My Airport Express worked fine when I was with Talk Talk, I was using a Belkin wireless router for my network connection which worked without any problems. When I got my Airport Express, it was easy to set up - it joined my Talk Talk network without a hitch.
When my connection transferred to BT last week, I tried to connect up my Airport Express to my new BT Homehub. However when I went into Airport Utility my AX wasn't there. So, I read the guide on the Apple Support site and reset it to factory settings. This then seemed to make it 'appear' in Airport Utility, so I went through the process of setting it up as I did when I first bought it. When I got through to the final stage when it is 'Updated successfully and is now re-starting', the AX icon seems to disappear from the left hand side of the box and eventually I get an error message stating 'Airport Utility was unable to find your Apple wireless device after reinstating: The settings for this apple device have been successfully updated but there was a problem re-joining the wireless network or finding the apple wireless device. You may need to select your network from the airport menu and try again' (Incidentally, this last piece of advice doesn't work)... So, I am not sure what to do. I have tried changing the format of the WEP code I need to enter by adding " in front of the code as well as $ as is the suggestion on the Apple Support site...
Is my AX faulty? Is my BT Homehub (The 'next generation of router' as BT call it) preventing my AX from joining my network?? If anyone can help I would appreciate it, I am not very clued up on these things.... :o)
    Thanks

I have now managed to get AX working on my BT home hub. I took my second non-working unit back to Apple in Solihull and got them to test it in store. They agreed it wasn't working. They then tested another unit in store and that did work so I brought that home. It would be worth you doing the same as I got a 10% discount off my next purchase of anything at Apple for my troubles.
I set my homehub security to None (from WEP - in homehub manager/advanced/wireless/security), plugged in my AX to homehub using an ethernet cable, then ran Airport utility and after a couple of runs it finally picked it up. I was able to set the configurations I wanted and 24 hours later it is still working. I set my homehub security settings back to WEP as soon as the AX was configured.
I also installed airport utility on my son's windows laptop and that is now able to print wirelessly as well. So, finally a result.
I would suggest you take your unit back to where you bought it from and get them to test it. If they offer you another one ask for a Mac genius
to test it in store for you first. Also ask them to run through the installation procedure with you. Don't forget to ask for something for your troubles:)
    Hope that helps,

  • Homehub 3.0 possibly the worst router i've had in ...

I have had the homehub 3.0 about 3 weeks now with a new infinity 2 installation.
I've left the settings all as defaults and its running
    Version 4.7.5.1.83.8.57.1.3 (Type A).
I am constantly having issues with the wifi signal and DHCP leasing.
For example, this morning no computers or iphones in the house could get online and on checking the PCs they had no DHCP address (limited connectivity). I have had to power cycle the homehub and now it's working again - I'm doing this every other day atm.
With regards to wifi signal, the problem I have is that it drops out. For example, yesterday I was using skype on the iPad and suddenly the wifi icon disappeared and skype call froze, then a few moments later the wifi icon came back. Similar happens on laptops where wifi drops out then comes back. This seems to be getting worst. If I restart the homehub then it settles down again.
I have previously had o2 broadband wireless ii box and that was pretty much perfect, we hardly ever restarted it.
Another problem is when we come back into range of the homehub, my iPhone does not connect to the homehub for a while. Normally with the o2 router it was instant as soon as we were out the front door! now it takes a while for the phone to connect, same thing happens when I switch on iphone in the morning.
Is the homehub just utter pants? I have had various wifi routers over the last 10 years and non of them have caused this much greif! I am wondering if maybe does it sound like it's faulty?
I am tempted to just go out and buy a new AP, like a netgear or something - but will this lose me access to BT Fon wifi etc?
    thanks

You will not lose your access to BT Wifi or BT FON if you use a different router, provided you stay opted in, it just means that your new router will not transmit the signals for other users.

  • Homehub 3.0 Wireless Event Log messages

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me what event log messages like the following mean?
3 consecutive beacons have not been transmitted
I'm getting these about once every 20 minutes.  Smart Wireless is enabled.
A couple of days ago Wireless became unstable, devices connecting and reconnecting repeatedly. The Wireless light was randomly flashing on and off (Blue) every few seconds.  I had to restart the homehub (which I didn't really want to do, as I was still within my first 10 days, with Infinity).  But after the restart, the admin password had changed.  I assumed it was reset to the original one, but that was also not recognised.  I had to do a password override to get access.
Ever since then Wireless has been behaving itself but I'm still left with these strange event log messages - google comes up with nothing.
    Any ideas?

    Hi BRunner and welcome
Although I've not had opportunity to obtain one of these hubs (BT are you listening), as I'm still on the hub 2, I'll try to help you out with this...
It looks like the hub is reporting that it can't transmit the wireless signal on the chosen channels, why, I'm not too sure
(this might be due to the design (how 'Smart Wifi' works), or dare I say it, the hub could be faulty!!!!!)
Firstly, download either inSSIDer2 (Windows) or istumbler (MAC) - take care when installing, uncheck any 'additional freebies' as they're not needed.
Either will show all the wireless SSIDs in your area. As I use inSSIDer2, I'll explain what to do using this one, I guess itsumbler would be similar (not a MAC man, yet!)
Disconnect from your own hub, run inSSIDer and monitor any SSIDs, I recently noticed that 2 of my neighbours (VM) routers appears to grab channel 1 upto channel 7!
This keeps changing and they keep fighting with each other. As this was affecting me, I've moved to channel 8. This can be manually set via the hub manager, but you'd probably need to switch off 'Smart Wifi'
Ideally, take a screenshot of the results BUT remove ANY wireless SSID's, it's the channels in use that's important.

  • Frequent ADSL reconnects with Homehub 2.

Problem: Frequent (>20 per week) ADSL reconnects resulting in varying IP Profiles sometimes down to 0.135Mb using Homehub 2.
BT Support actions: Several hours of phone calls at various support levels over three months leading to two BT technician visits. The first visit involved relocating the master socket and tidying the extension connections; the second resulted in a better specification circuit, between the exchange and the cabinet, being selected. Both are useful improvements but did nothing to solve the problem. An attempt to convince Support that the Homehub may be faulty was unsuccessful.
My (subsequent) action: Connected another Homehub 2 (one which had been replaced by BT some years ago to solve a different problem) and problem completely solved. I have had a stable good speed link for over a month now.
Conclusion: BT may find it cheaper to try replacing Homehubs earlier in the fault finding process.

i think this is mainley for the mods
when i renewd my bt broadband contract the operater said i dont need new equippent as i have a hh2 from my last 12mts contract, i said yeah thats fine as i dont like to change things that are not broken but i do have a small technical probem and could you put me thru to tech after i have renewd this contract. I spoke with tech and i told them my problem as i get no internet when the hub as been left on for some time it requires a manual restart as if its locked up, the tech support guy said its a faulty hub i said can i send mine back for repair he said because i have just renewed my order is still open and cannot send me one out i missed the guys call back the next day and phoned tech support back and they said the problem is within my telephone exchage and i would need an engneers visit to prove hub is at fault as i have just started working till 8pm on a night and the latest appointment they do is 6pm i was getting a little mad and asked to cancel however they wanna charge me £130 to cancel with no cooling off period i told them its the homehub at fault but they dont beleave me and said its not worth my job to send you a new router and i need an engineers visit to prove its faulty. however i have a borrowed netgear router on the past 4days or so and its been fine so far, so the point im getting at is there anyway i can send my hh2 for a repair or will i still need a visit??
    Thanks Brian

I would phone uk sales 08007830056 and explain you just renewed your contract and expected to receive a new hub (HH2 or HH3 whichever you decide) and it has not arrived yet - what's happening as your existing HH2 is locking upor not keeping your connection

  • Replacement Homehub 2.0 and Ethernet Connection

    Hi all,
PLEASE HELP!  I have a HomeHub2.0 and have it connecting via wireless to my laptop and through ethernet to my desktop (as the network card doesn't work).  This worked perfectly until our HomeHub died.  We bought a replacement HomeHub (through ebay) and this works ok wirelessly.  I am trying to connect to the internet on my desktop via the ethernet and nothing is working.  I have tried to open the HubManager already installed on my desktop but it says "Unable to Connect to Hub".  I have tried to go into my internet setting and access properties to check ISP addresses etc but really don't know what I'm doing.  I did notice that through the control panel I checked the Network Connections but there was nothing there so I added the Homehub using the info on the back of hub.  It seems to have set up a connection but again nothing is working.  I've been trawling the internet and even downloaded new drivers for my Emachines 3230 thinking it may be the drivers but I don't know how to reinstall them? I'm in a muddle.  Please help, I need to access my employer database on the desktop to do a return to Inland Revenue in the next few days but without internet access I'm bleeped!
    Thanks
    Natalie

Have you reset the home hub to factory default by pressing the recessed reset button for about 20 seconds, while it is powered up?

  • BT Homehub 2.0 Dropping all connections. Wired and...

    Hi All
I recently joined BT a couple of months ago after being with Virgin. I was very happy with the speeds up the service to begin. Then the homehub started dropping all connections, both wireless and wired. This would happen about once or twice per day and the only way to get the connections back would be to power off the homehub. The lights remained all blue and there was no apparently connection issues after ringing through to support. After a few calls to BT they agreed that the router was faulty.
I then received a replacement hub, and after connecting it, I found that it was even worse. It lost all connections about every 20 minutes to the point where I had to hook up the one I was about to return to BT.
I have read similar threads, but nothing has been able to solve my problem. I have checked the channels and tried changing them, although I was the only router on a particular channel to begin with.
I am about to ring up BT tomorrow to request yet another homehub. Before I do I was hoping that someone would be able to help. In the entire time I was with Virgin for 2 years, I think I lost connection maybe 2 or 3 times over 2 years with their supplied netgear router. This is why I really feel the fault is with the router and not the line. I am not against just buying a new router, so any suggestions that people have used with BT would also help.

  • Using Bt HomeHub 2 as a Modem/possible router (Lin...

Okay so here is my problem:
I have just brought a a new Cisco Linksys EA4500. It didn't come with a modem built so I though that I could use my HomeHub 2. Now this how I have it connected:
Phone line-->ADLS-->BTHH--- Via Ethernet Port 1--->EA4500 Router
Now I thought that would just work and I could insert the install disk, follow instructions and it works. However it didn't the software I was given displayed 'can not find your router'. The other thing is that my new router is not appearing when I scan for wireless networks after I have turned it on.
So what I really want to know is:
Is my new router faulty? (Or is it hidden until I run the setup disk)
Is the BT HH restricting my router from working
Do I need to buy a new modem?
Do I need to configure my BT home hub?
    Thanks in advance.

    GBHsl wrote:
So if I wanted to get rid of my HH I would have go and buy a stand alone modem?
I am not sure that would work, unless your router can support PPPoA, which I am sure the EA4500 does not.
There is not going to be any advantage in a stand-alone modem anyway. Why did you opt for the EA4500, if you only have an ADSL connection?
Its possible that you may be able to authenticate the PPP session using PPPoE, if that is the case, then you may be able to use a stand alone ADSL modem like the TP-LINK TD-8616. I did read of someone doing that with a Netgear router, so it may possibly work with BT Broadband.
If you just end up using the EA4500 as an Ethernet switch and access point, then some of the more advanced features of the EA4500, like printer sharing, are unlikely to work, as that relies on the "router" function of the EA4500, which you will not be using.
