I am trying to configure a number of Arch boxes to use as fileservers and web proxies on a mostly-Windows network. I've been able to get most things running much easier in Arch than I have in Ubuntu or CentOS (we're undecided on which OS to use, although Ubuntu is definitely out for the moment, as it only has samba2.5 in the repos (and samba4, which is alpha)). Arch is definitely my preference, due to the logical, simple way that configuration is laid out.
The one problem I'm having is using eiciel. It's essential to be able to use ACL's for file permissions on this system. Luckily, that's not dependent on eiciel, since setfacl and getfacl work fine. However, having eiciel working would be a big "nice to have", and I was able to get it working without a hitch on Ubuntu and CentOS. Eiciel *is* in the repository, so even though I know the general disdain for GUI tools on Arch, I have to believe that someone out there is using it. And I can use it fine as a standalone tool (though it's not spectacularly useful that way), but can't figure out why the nautilus integration won't work.
"Nautilus-extensions" is listed as a dependency for the eiciel nautilus integration, however I can't find a package by that name. Installing nautilus-actions seems to do the trick on Ubuntu, so I'm assuming that "nautilus-extensions" isn't specifically a package name, but just a requirement that nautilus-extensions in general work. And they do. Nautilus-share, installed from the repos, works fine, as do some others. I downloaded the source for eiciel and built it myself, hoping to see if there were any errors, but there were not. The extensions directory was listed properly, and the libeiciel-nautilus.so file exists in that directory.
Is there any other procedure that would normally be required to enable a nautilus extension, other than just copying it to that directory? I checked gconf-editor and nautilus preferences with no luck. Or maybe there's another dependency that it's silently failing on? Anyone use eiciel with nautilus integration?
(edit: yes, I did restart nautilus after installing, several times. also restarted the whole machine when that didn't work.)
Last edited by estyles (2010-03-12 00:23:52)@tomk: Yep, before posting I have spent some time searching the issue. It apparently did appear for others (Ubuntu), probably due to a broken package in some version of debian (a year ago). Now solved.
(Eicel standalone works fine for me. Nautilus run from CLI does not show any info.)
I have not found any note regarding to special procedures on how to "enable" the tab in nautilus. Once the extension is installed and acl enabled for the filesystem, it should appear automatically.
I will go on searching, possibly some how to on debugging nautilus extensions...

It doesn't seem to be an options or configuration thing, maybe more like some sort of corruption? The Panels are fine. I have checked desktop and Nautilus options using Gconf and tried recreating ~/.gconf etc. The only suspicious occurrence was when, in the middle of a pacman -Syu, I was thrown back to the GDM login prompt. I just logged in again and did another pacman -Syu and everything seemed okay.
By the way, running Nautilus as root does show root's desktop okay, but Nautilus still crashes.
Any help would be most welcome for a very frustrating problem!
PS: Forgot to say that I'd tried reinstalling quite a few Gnome things and Nautilus, with no effect.
Also, the problem persists after restarting X, logon, reboot, power-off ...
Last edited by ninian (2009-01-21 09:35:05)Uh-oh, seems like this problem could go wider than I thought. There's a fairly lengthy thread on the Ubuntu forums which smells the same, for example:

Re: Desktop icons disappear
Got it! I can get a crash with this:
Code:
mkdir ~/test
cp /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop ~/test/
nautilus ~/test
I'm going to leave a comment in the bug.
And in fact, I was mucking around with .desktop files when I think my icons went AWOL.
Anyone else brave enough to risk losing their desktop to try this out?! -
[ Solved ] Firefox profile cannot be loaded .
After a few weeks of not updating , ( I was off line ), I updated and Firefox displays the following message ;
" Your profile cannot be loaded . It may be missing or inaccesible. "
In ' Home ' I have .mozilla-backup and under properties - owner is , ( in a blue ? box ) , the word ' Me ' , .
I have notta clue , I've googled and found mostly window answers .
However if I start Firefox in a Terminal , ( sudo ) , it will open , no bookmarks , homepages , add-ons are not present .
Like a New Install if that sounds right .

Unable to upgrade due to a conflict [SOLVED]
Greetings you all.
I've been tried to upgrade my system and I've been unable to do it due to a conflict between xf86-video-openchrome and unichrome-dri.
This is the pacman output:
[root@Viper /]# pacman -Syu
:: Synchronizing package databases...

Can anybody tel me how do I solve this?
I already have libgl installed...
[root@Viper /]# pacman -S libgl

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: nouveau-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
:: unichrome-dri: requires libgl=7.11.2
[root@Viper /]# pacman -Q libgl
libgl 7.11.2-1
If trying to uninstall unichrome-dri, it returns:
[root@Viper /]# pacman -R unichrome-dri
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: xf86-video-openchrome: requires unichrome-dri
And by the way, is it safe do replace all those items that appeared before?
Thank you all.
Last edited by JMRamos (2012-05-31 16:01:12)Thanks for your quick response, but only today I had a chance of look into this again...
I use an on board chipset from VIA Technologies, and the only way I figured to get that old gadget (VIA Technologies, Inc. P4M890) working is by using Openchrome. Mesa simply doesn't work and vesa has some issues.
So I followed your advice, by removing xf86-video-openchrome, updating and installing it again.
Everything is working now.
Thanks a lot. -
IPhone/iPad connectivity under xfce4
Running xfce4 here and installed a patched version of libimobledevice (see flyspray #26710). I can now successfully mount my ipad using ifuse. My question is, can I get thunar to auto mount it like Gnome does?
I spun-up a quick Arch install on a spare partition and booted into it. The Gnome DE provides this (gnome-shell) this functionality:
Last edited by graysky (2012-05-22 16:44:29)graysky wrote:@tomk - one thing that the nautilus integration provides is access to "ipad docs" which I cannot figure out how to get with ifuse.
ifuse man page wrote:--appid APPID
mount 'Documents' folder of app identified by APPID.
That works, just tried it. If you don't know your APPIDs, ideviceinstaller can get them for you - git build is in the AUR.
So a udev rule and some script to wrap ifuse and ideviceinstaller should do it - I'm going to throw something together now, see how it goes. -
Configuring System Clock Failed
Hi I am new to Arch, but most things are going great. This is what happened. I have spent the last day setting up arch and everything has been going smoothly. Recently it did a filesystem check and I had to manually fix some things on my root hard drive. After that system clock fails to configure and the gnome panel clock crashes every time I try and load it. This is what I get from the buggy buddy or whatever

I haven't found anything on this really...any help getting that working again? ThanksWell I fixed it so here it is... sudo pacman -S gnome-panel. Just reinstalled that bad boy and my clock works a treat. I still have to mess with my rc.conf and see if i did something that would get me that boot script failing on system clock, but my clock works fine and so does my NTP update.

[solved] How to activate beagle integration into Nautilus ?
Hi all !
Beagle is really great and work like a charm on my machine.
I have heard that nautilus has a beagle integration. It does not work apparently : nautilus's searches are not as exaustive as beagle's one for the same query
Also there is something stange :
ldd /usr/bin/nautilus | grep beagle
gives nothing, whereas
ldd /usr/bin/yelp | grep beagle
gives
libbeagle.so.1 => /usr/lib/libbeagle.so.1
Is there something wrong with nautilus's package ?
Any body managed to use beagle inside nautilus ?
Thank you for your help !
Last edited by chicha (2007-12-08 19:13:17)I respond to myself for any people interested :
There was a bug in arch's patch to activate beagle into nautilus.
I wrote a new patch.
See this bug report for more details.
Cheers,
Chicha -
Nautilus freezes when move from some folder with SVG inside
When I move to folder with SVG-file inside and then move to any other folder (for example move up) nautilus
When I try to open such svg in Eye Of Gnome it is opened properly without errors.
I didn't catch any error in /var/log/*.logs and in ~/.xsession-errors.
I have a Intel HD3000 integrated in my Intel i7.

It's better to contact the maintainer so that he updates his copy. -
Hi
Nautilus calculates thumbnails for images (if you want this) and saves them under ~/.thumbnails to improve the performance the next time you view the folder.
Nautilus is clever enough to get the ExIF thumbnails of JPEGs taken by a »modern« digital camera. Unfortunately it also copies these thumbnails to ~/.thumbnails which leads to a very poor performance (compared to just displaying the thumbs) and wasted free disk space. Is there a way to prevent nautilus from »extracting« the thumbs? Any gconf-switches? Any ideas (except of don't use Nautilus I like the way it's integrated in the GNOME-Environment)?
HannesFor movies I use the imdb-thumbnailer tool (it's in AUR). If I look in the source for the code that registers the thumbnailer, I find this:
for i in $video_extensions; do
gconftool-2 -s "/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/$i"/command -t string '$THUMBNAIL_COMMAND
gconftool-2 -s "/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/$i"/enable -t boolean 'true'
done
Search google for the thumbnail command and google for the list of extensions.
Good luck! -
Nautilus Crashes File Browsing 100% CPU [SOLVED]
Arch Linux 64-bit Gnome desktop
kernel 2.6.36.2-1
libgnome 2.32.0-3
nautilus 2.32.2.1-1
nautilus-actions 3.0.3-1
nautilus settings tree view, icons
gconfig setting /apps/nautilus/preferences/always_use_location_entry [checked]
To reproduce:
1) open nautilus computer location
2) browse to /user/share directory
3) click to expand and show directory contents.
Nautilus will lock up and utilize 100% of one CPU for about 5 min.
This behavior is the same logged in as user or using gksu nautilus command as user.
Logging in as root results in normal nautilus operation.
Since root user has a normal functioning nautilus, Im suspecting a setting or config issue.
I have tried to uninstall nautilus, remove all my user ( .nautilus) files, etc. then reinstall.

During my search for a solution to this, I find very similar nautilus issues going back several years, but with no similar or clear fix.
Last edited by jeff story (2011-01-22 22:07:45)Thanks wonder,
But I just manually downgraded this package yesterday to resolve a different nautilus issue......
My above issue has been present for weeks.
Edit:
Ok I did system upgrade.
The nautilus-actions issue is fixed in the new version, but my nautilus hanging for 5 min is still present.

Refresh System Data in Integration Directory PI 7.11
Hey,
I have setup a new technical system and a business system in SLD, but now I still can't find it in Integration Directory.
I knew from the later PI Version, that there was an option to transfer SLD data to integration directory, but now I can't find it
anymore.
Can anybody help?
Thanks!

Nautilus is not working in gnome3
Hello everyone, I'm trying to open a nautilus window in gnome3 but it's not working and I don't know what's going on. I've some folders in Desktop and I can open nautilus there but in Activities --> Files nothing happens.
In the terminal I run nautilus and still is not working, no error, nothing...
I don't know what it's happening because it was working in gnome3, I don't know whether a recent upgrade broke something.
Thanks in advanceWell I really didn't know it was a compatibility issue. You're right, I installed gnome-tweak-tool but I don't know what did I check to obtain this behaviour.

Import 16x9 from 4x3 camera MiniDV
I have footage shot in 16x9 on a Canon camera. I want to import with an older Sony camera that is 4x3. Will this work? Reason: Canon firewire port stopped working and causes any Mac it's connected to to freeze/crash.
